Game 3
Big Game Mort vs Tighty Whitey. This is an enormous game for both teams and feels like more than just the $2.50 I assigned to the first two games.
27 Years ago today Joe Carter smacked the biggest home run in baseball history to give the Blue Jays back to back titles. Who remembers when Joe Carter was a Giant? We traded a dude named Darrin Blood for him. Great name that got away from us.
I know the Mazeroski homer was before our time, but that homer was WAY bigger than the one Carter hit.
Game 7 v Game 6, and an incredible underdog story.
Greatest moment in the history of sports? Maz is in the conversation as far as I’m concerned.
Fired up for the game tonight. I will be up in LA with my son Matt, who i think is being aggressively wooed by Dodger fans up there. I fear he is falling under their spell…
Agree on Mazeroski. I mean, he was a Pirate and they defeated the Evil Empire with that one big blast and that dinger coming from an unexpected source. The Yankmees ruled that era. HUUUUGE upset. Total shocker.
Just show Matt this!
Good job, Chuck!
Front page of Chron today has story on Joey Wendle, Rays 3b whom they acquired from…Oakland A’s Dec. 2017, for PTNL back up C Jonah Heim who made ML debut late August of 2020 and hit .211. yeow
this is a great question. Go!
Easy.
Ron Pruitt
Throw in Kirby’s 1991 homer…Game 6…
Ill go Nate Schierholtz…
Ha good one, endlessly debated and such odd career even after he left. Hey Mtn West football starts up this weekend. Jose st. to host Air Force; no fans allowed yet in any Santa Clara County stadiums, disgraceful.
I’ll always remember Nate as the RF with a great arm whose excellent throw to Buster skipped oddly on damp grass, making him vulnerable as Cousins decided not to slide.
Jesus Alou.
Did anyone outside of New York care about the “shot heard ’round the world”?
Don DeLillo’s novel Underworld starts with a great description of that game. J Edgar Hoover, Jackie Gleason and Frank Sinatra are in the stands. Just before Thomson’s blast, J Edgar learns that the Soviets have successfully tested an H bomb. In the LF seats, a truant Black kid fights a truant executive in a suit for the HR ball and wins. Then his father takes it away to sell. One character spends a lifetime trying to track it down. Etc.
Great stuff, Xoot!

Tony Perezchica
He worked a walk in the first spring training game I ever attended in 1991. It was the highlight of an otherwise boring game. My buddy and I still talk about it to this day. It was a helluva an at bat.
Stu Miller
Randy Kutcher
Good one
John Castino. He way overachieved for my Stratomatic team the year after he hit 300, back in a time when I was super impressed with both that number and Castino’s relative obscurity, two short years before I read my first Baseball Abstract.
Kurt Manwaring. If only for his name.
Waldis Joaquin
John Boccabella only cause his name is even cooler then Manwaring..
Jim Dwyer.
Guy Sularz is another . . .
Joe Pettini
Dan Gladden was another one…Bill Mueller….
Tom O’Malley.
Dirty Al Gallagher
Royce Clayton and Don Robinson.
Caveman was pretty well-known, wasn’t he? He had a long career with the Pirates iirc.
Yeah, you’re probably right. I left off Mitchell because of the MVP but who could ever forget the Caveman and Mitch? Loved those guys. I always thought Clayton would turn into a Barry Larkin and even though he didn’t, I can’t forget how much I rooted for that guy.
Saw story in NYT that once again a Baffert owned horse, Gamine. tested positive from race Kentucky Oaks Sept 4 and the Kentucky Racing Board is “looking into it.” Fines, return of winnings and suspension could legally follow, apparently.
Joe Strain& Dennis Liitlejohn
Ollie Brown
WHAT ABOUT BOOF BONSLER??????
At least spell his name right, needle-dick.
I called Chris Russo near the 2003 trade deadline and proposed sending Bonser and Jose Cruz to the Mets for Benitez and Burnitz. He said he didn’t love it but it was well thought out…
Just reported, no DH in NL for the 2021 season
Last year of not having it I’m sure.
Be honest, did any of you guys miss watching the pitchers bat this year? I didn’t.
I barely noticed the 3 batter rule…
For me it isn’t about the pitcher hitting, it’s more the history of the game and also I’m not a fan of a homerun contest. It seemed to me that each day this season there was multiple games where a team had a double digit score, sorry, but that to me is more boring than ABs by the pitchers.
Why doesn’t MLB just suggest not having fielders, make it a true HR derby but against ML pitching. Teams can save money by not having as many players, they could shorten the game by having 5 rounds instead of 9 innings and whatever else the Manfred type pricks can come up with. I’m sure some people would like it a lot, me not so much.
DJ LOO– what is the significance of the 1428 on the masterpiece? Your addy growing up? Or a hidden meaning
It’s the actual address of the Nightmare On Elm Street house.
1428 Elm Street.
There’s tons of Google images…
got it. Thanks.
HR and a double for Itt.
Dang mistake there. Last time up Morton wiped out Smith on like 3 pitches. walk would not have hurt him.
Fuck. Turd burglar makes a nice play at 3rd.
Mort came up ant-small tonight. Tidy Whitey looks like he could throw a no hitter…
thought that myself. he’s getting some corners from ump and when Rays have stung one it’s an at em ball.
Aroz just missed taking one out too.
we unhexed the Rays, finally.
Wow. Not going so good tonight. 67 pitches through 5?
Ji-Man’s trying.
Aroz rocket off Jansen was awesome shot. Can’t see Roberts using him in close game.
re:good pitching stops good hitting.
Before the bomb off Jansen Aroz was 1-9 in Series.
unfortunately, rest of Rays hitting is just mediocre and getting wiped out by good pitching. Last night non Aroz 3-26 with 1 BB and bunch of K’s.
Meanwhile Dodgers #9 guy Barnes drives in 2 and homers.
Game 2 was a “must win” for Rays, and now Game 4 is, too. No way Rays would come back down 2 games in this series.
Brian Johnson
So hoping Rays win today. It will put kershaw and Roberts in the spotlight again. CK for obvious reasons..Roberts for stupidly not pitching Buehler in game 2. Of course I wan’t roberts to stay on as manager:)
Roberts annoys me more than their players. did you see him yesterday smiling during the interview in dugout, like he knew the questions beforehand? He’s been lucky so far except in Game 2 when his bullpen game plan blew up on him.
Still say if Bochy had his teams from last few years, he’d have a ring or two.
…or 3 or 4
Yes, Roberts has always had a lot of talent to manage with. It would be interesting to see how he did with less talented teams.
I wouldn’t say that Bochy ever had the most talented team overall in any of his playoffs.
Even with all the talent the Dodgers have right now, could they win 3 in 5 years? Time will tell. (Spoiler alert: it ain’t easy. Just ask the Cubs and Astros.)
That Nationals team always seemed like a one and done.
The Red Sox came closest, and they did some cheating in ‘18.
Rays need a minimum of 6 runs tonight, which is asking a lot of team that struggling to hit.
Dogpile is going to score runs with that LU it’s up to the Rays to score more off of UrAnus
who’s been tough but he’s not Buehler tough.
Must game, the Rays lose this one it’s over..
This is an amazing historic first..
1971 Baltimore Orioles playing the Pittsburgh Pirates under the lights in 3 River Stadium..
What makes it unique is it’s the first W/S game ever in 397 past games that will be played at night!!
Curry ridden by Jessica Pyfer wins 2nd race at Santa Anita by about 10 lengths.
will be interesting off season for his boys who have 2nd pick in draft, lot of options to address different needs.
Buehler is lined up to pitch game 7, if needed. Roberts isn’t any smarter or dumber than most other managers. I get that the Rays are “struggling to hit” and not pitching well, because we’d like to see LA fail again and the team you’re rooting for is always simply not doing things right when they lose. But objectively the Dodgers had the best pitching in baseball this year – it wasn’t even close – and their offense is as smart as Roberts is ostensibly dumb. The SF offense got better in large part because some of the hitters were able to emulate the general approach LA and others take. Hitters do have something to do with their own success … I think Rays will still make this interesting.
Ha, Defense Wins (every coach in any sport would agree) with Abel Cedillo aboard comes from off pace to win 3rd race at Santa Anita. Trained by Doug O’Neill, coach Rick Pitino apparently is part owner.
See how well up and down and depleted Niners D can play this week; also interesting to see how Pitino will do at Iona in MAAC.
Rays win tonight and win it in 6! They lose and LA wins in 5.
With no pressure Kershaw pitches well, and team rallies around him winning. Vice versa if Rays win tonight.
Harbs U of M season not off to great start. First series of season ends with sack of QB, ensuing punt is blocked. Minnesota takes over at 17 and scores in 2 plays. 7-0 Golden Gophers.
feeling little better now–running back goes 70 yds for TD on first play of their second series. 7-7 after 2 and a half minutes of football.
Speaking of Big 10, the Penn St-Indy game was nuts.
and Rutgers won!
Yes, Wille, maybe there is a Jersey team that can actually play good football.
Great aticle in the Athletic!
https://theathletic.com/2155862/2020/10/23/giants-world-series-tim-lincecum-bruce-bochy/
Feels like forever since Timmy’s glory days…
I don’t remember Betts making play after play like that in the ’18 playoffs/World Series.
He’d have been better off hitting Seager.
This series is a mismatch.
Men against boys…
The ball is larger then a grapefruit for Seager right now!
He’s so locked in it’s ridiculous..
Covid, short “season,” runner on second to start the tenth, universal dh, WS on a neutral plastic grass field. dodger win would fit all too well. 2020. No asterisk necessary.
I hope the rays bounce back. But I’m busy hedging my bets. It ain’t dark yet but it’s gettin there.
RIP Jerry Jeff Walker. His cover of Up Against the Wall Redneck Mother was . . . . well ill stop there. Great outlaw.
Didn’t he sing Mr.Bojangles?
He wrote that one
Pissin in the Wind was another hit.
That was great timing on the Rhinestone Cowboy song for Aroz to go yard!
And Fairbanks gives it right back.
Lowe’d contact!
Yeah Baby!!!
Brandon Lowe just erased the whole deficit!!!
That was crushed!!!
This is a great exciting game at least…
Pissin in the Wind
Now we’re talking
Baez and Roberts getting lit up on twitter.
Nice bunt Kike lol 😂
yeah pitch was up around his head.
Flookie…
mm I’d walk Seager myself to get to RH Turner.
or at least not give in.
Yeah Roberts does his usual dumb thinking.
Why did it stick with Baez when u have Graterol heated up?
Yep should of walked Seager Willied..
Fortunately for Roberts, Cash suffers from similar intellectual deficiencies.
Graterol esta loco.
4 person OF will come under some scrutiny too. Never seen anybody else do it as often as Cash does.
