Putting It All Together

Tromp with a birthday blast, Yaz filling up the stat sheet and Doobie with 2 stolen bags. A nice little Sunday, actually. I have only heard of 1 of the Dodgers pitchers (the starter) but it’s still nice to drop an L on those losers.

The Dodgers will miss Hernandez and Pederson. The challenge for the Dodgers in trying to put together a dynasty is the challenge of paying everyone.

Thanks for the correction on the last thread, Loo.
Yeah, Stan Love was a journeyman player; Bob Love was the guy who had a nice career with the Bulls.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on March 22, 2021 at 7:20 am

Bob Love was on those great Bulls teams that battled Warriors in playoffs. Norm VanLier, Jerry Sloan, Chet Walker Tom Boerwinkle. Chet Walker one of few guys I ever saw fake Nate Thurmond into a shooting foul.

Salvador Perez, Royals agree to four-year, $82 million extension. Perez helped the Royals capture a World Series title in 2015. He was named World Series MVP after slashing .364/.391/.455 with eight hits and two RBI. He is also a six-time All-Star, five-time Gold Glover and three-time Silver Slugger. During the pandemic shortened campaign, he slashed .333/.353/.633 with 11 home runs and 32 RBI.

Stupid contract in lieu of his age (31), but my take is that he outperformed his six-year, $52 million deal that began in 2016. Conversely, Posey has underperformed his contract significantly. Posey is probably the better offensive player, but defense seems to be Perez’s edge (5 GGs versus Posey’s 1), albeit, outside of the 2 World Series he played in, I don’t really know. I don’t think either one gets into the HOF, but Perez seems to have age on his side right now.

    What say you?

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on March 22, 2021 at 8:04 am

Posey’s Gold Glove total was hurt by having to compete with Yadier, who’s the more self-promoting, IMO. Yadier making all those throws behind the runner at first base were fake hustle, IMO.

I think he made the last out of the 2014 WS – the pop up to Panda.
      I could be wrong…

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on March 22, 2021 at 8:45 am

mm Posey in early years of course was highly underpaid. He was very high WAR player with multiple awards being paid less than a mil during early 3/5 days. Injuries have cost him (and team) definitely. Gold glove, idk seems like way overvalued award sometimes given to less than deserving. Looking to see what’s left in tank for Posey; hopefully he shows enough to stick around and help Kapler figure out staff til Bailey can take over.

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on March 22, 2021 at 8:56 am

Yeah, Loo, Perez hit the pop up to end the Series. Bum gave him several fastballs, up in the strike zone, in a row. Clearly pitching to a scouting report.

Last week of ST. Casali, Posey, Longo and Belt still not certain for opening day. I think Longo and Belt on IL to start would be a good thing.

    • xoot's avatar xoot said, on March 22, 2021 at 8:23 am

Susan reported Belt engaging in “some baseball activity” about three weeks ago. In the meantime, he’s probably picked up another malady and stubbed his toe.

  6. willedav's avatar willedav said, on March 22, 2021 at 8:56 am

As late as 2017 Posey was still a 4 WAR player with .861 OPS as per B/R. 2010 when he wasn’t making squat 3.9, and 2012 7.6. Wasn’t until 2013 he made as much as $8mil, and was 5 WAR player with 2 WS rings by then.

That’s why I don’t have a big problem with any of the “reward” contracts the Giants gave out, even the Cain one.

Key contributors to the 3-in-5 got paid, and that’s fine. Taking on Longoria’s contract is far more irritating to me.

I’ve posted the list of HoF catchers before, and in terms of offensive stats, they are an expectedly underwhelming lot. Posey with 3 WS rings and the 861 OPS (correction, 826) would not be out of place on it. But he’s not a Koufax like prodigy. Zumie’s slam of Cousins the other day may be accurate, unfortunately.

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on March 22, 2021 at 10:22 am

2,000 hits would have gotten Posey into the Hall, IMO, but his rapid physical decline due to lingering effects of that injury make 2,000 seem unreachable now.

      • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on March 22, 2021 at 10:23 am

Since Belt’s injuries came up again, I’ll note that the multiple beanings arguably kept him locked into his role as a figure of controversy and derision for many. He was not injury prone in his 20s and his career numbers would certainly be better now.

    From the Athletic.

    Watson is toast.

Of the 13 lawsuits that are currently viewable on the Harris County district clerk’s website, all but two of the suits involve plaintiffs who say they were contacted for massage appointments in 2020. The other two incidents, also involving massage therapists, allegedly occurred in January and March of this year.

The suits allege Watson forced two women to perform oral sex, ejaculated on one woman, ejaculated in front of two others, groped a woman’s vagina and buttocks and kissed another woman unprompted upon arrival for an appointment. Eleven of the 13 publicly available suits accuse Watson of inappropriately touching women with his penis. One alleges that at the end of a massage, after trying to direct a woman to touch his anus, Watson exposed himself and asked if she “did more” than professional work “for more money.”

News is going to always be bad, from Kraft, to the Atlanta shootings, to Watson, et al. Kinda breaks my heart. When I first was living in Asia in ’05 (in China), I started writing a collection of stories. One was called “Everything I know about China, I learned from my massage girl”. I get liking the Beatles more than the Beach Boys. But for all the genius of Brian Wilson, it’s still teenybopper music to me. The Beatles at least progressed way past the ‘I wanna hold your hand’ stuff. Although Pet Sounds has some solid stuff on it, I just can’t listen to a lot of it.

Now if they had a song called “I want you to touch my taint” I could get behind that. So to speak.

Guess I have to stick with this.

I had the supreme thrill of seeing Zappa play this at the Greek in 1988.

    • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on March 22, 2021 at 10:43 pm

The early Beach Boys lyrics are not often much, but musically a lot of the material is incredibly complex. This song uses a very complex musical chord in its hook. The chord is called G+5/F. I would need three hands to play that on guitar. Wilson just had a way of finding those kinds of things on piano. So, I choose to see The Beach Boys as a forerunner of indie pop music.
