Rough Night For Giants, Ex-Giant
We all know Bumgarner saves his best performances for the post season but, uh, he’s starting to let himself go a little in the regular season. WOW. He’s pitched 55.1 innings for the D-backs and he’s given up 47 earned runs. He’s turned into the Dodgers version of Jason Schmidt. Can you imagine what those fans must think of him? Does Arizona have fans that would care enough to be mad about this? Boston certainly did when it came to our beloved Panda.
Not much to say about last night’s game except the team batting average is down to .192. I continue to stare at the aged, ominous POTD and worry that maybe it was more predictive of ALL of our 2021 bats…..
Solano did have line drive single. But Miley was in command all night. Giants kept swinging at calf high pitches, so he kept throwing them. Outside of couple warning track drives by Longoria, too many ground ball outs.
Didn’t do much better off pen guy either. RH lineup didn’t work too well…funny thing is Sunday the LHs were the ones who tore it up–Belt Dickerson Yaz. Less than sold full platooney lineup always best idea but maybe not Kap’s call.
Watched an inning or so of Bum vs. A’s. Walked a guy (pissed at ump) then 3b messed up potential DP for an error ruled a hit, followed by ringing double into corner. Fastball topped out at 90, cutter was mid 80s.
There’s an “Airplane” joke in here somewhere but poor Blade picked wrong night to go all in with Giants on his fantasy teams. Like to see Wilmet get going too
It’s rare, but you can still win with 2 duds on your team (e.g., Longo, Flores) and a mediocre effort by 2 others (Posey and Solano . . . Actually, Solano was decent). What helped me was Canha and Loreano beating Bum like a drum; good performance by Andrus in support of his A’s teammates; a great effort by Soto; and, a lights out pitching duo (Peralta and especially, Glasnow).
That being said, if the Giants hitters had performed decently, it would have been a lot more money.
Miley recorded 10 groundouts to 1 fly out in 5 innings. Antone got 4 more to 1 flyout in 3 2/3 relief.
Hey, they made me money in DK . . . umm, ehh, uhh, well Bum did anyway giving up all those runs. If you want to see the ticket Willie – give me your email. lol
Tough to win a game with 2 singles, 2 walks and 9 Ks.
Well, better to get that outta the way with the 5th starter. I bailed in the 6th, as it was pretty apparent how the game would play out. I kept sneeking peeks via LameDay, but it played as expected.
Bats need to come alive for the Mendoza gang. Hopefully Gausman tosses a gem today, AND has something (a W) to show for it.
Anybody see story about Cowboy West winning $500 K defamation suit vs. Paul LoDuca? The backstory is wild.
LoDuca said publicly during a game he was catching that Billy Wagner told him West would give him calls on inside of plate b/c Wagner let him use his ’57 Chevy when he was in town to ump Mets games. Which according to LoDuca is exactly what happened– Wagner struck guys out who were yelling and screaming and throwing bats in disgust, after previously not giving same calls to Mets pitchers earlier in game.
Any of this believable?
Well, Joe W won a default judgment, I think. LoDuca last I heard just ignored the lawsuit, refused to appear. 500K plus interest is probably less than it would’ve cost to defend. Wagner will chip in under the table I bet. You know he didn’t want to take an oath and repeat the story. The 57 Chevy loaner element is hilarious. That’s about the right price for West.
Flores had 2 doubles in first game of season @Seattle, and a single next day.
Since then he’s 0-14 with 4 BBs.
RHPs going today and tomorrow for Reds before road trip to Miami and Philly.
Giants are fortunate to have pad their record where they are above .500, but Flav’s line is ominous, “Not much to say about last night’s game except the team batting average is down to .192.”
Luis Castillo’s 1st start of the season was a disaster when he allowed 10 runs (eight earned) across 3.1 innings against the Cardinals. Good news for the Giants. He didn’t record a single strikeout while allowing 13 batters to reach base. More good news for the Giants.
However, the aforementioned dud performance was unusual for Castillo, though, given that he’s never finished a season with a WHIP over 1.23. He quickly righted the ship in his next start, shutting out the Pirates across seven innings. Consequently, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him provide another quality performance against a Giants team that entered Monday having scored four or fewer runs in seven of their nine games. See what’s what tonight.
If Giants hitters had a tough time vs Wade Miley, one can only imagine their consternation facing Luis Castillo, who’s ERA since appearing on the scene a few years back has generally been around 3.30. Nasty-assed 3-1 ratio of strikes to balls and his HRs given up seem close to league average until you realize that half his starts have been in that graveyard of pitchers, the Great American Bandstand. With Gausman on the hill for SF, the run total for both teams may well be no higher than the three scored last night.
Kapler’s best move last night was to go on with Garcia after his HR to Votto when he entered the game, followed by a double. He’d not been used much in previous games and as noted last night, he came in being pretty rusty. The extras he threw after that initial blast were solid. Perhaps K. will go to him before Alvarez, who has shown very little in his first outings.
Some games an offense is simply flat. The attack last night reminded me of a tire with a couple of nails in it.
Gee, Blade, without me having seen your 8:52, we sure were on the same page vs. Castillo.
I’m laughing because this quote comes to mind, “Great minds think alike.”
However, the complete quote or idiom is “Great minds think alike, though fools seldom differ.” Most people forget that part. This suggests that the people that reached the same conclusion as you may not be as smart as you think! Although I have Castillo on one of my DFS teams, I always want the Giants to win . . . So, let’s hope both of us are wrong. 🙂
I haven’t checked Castillo’s career record vs us but assuming there’s some revenge factor there to consider as well.
Three starts, 2-0 with one ND (Giants won), 2.29 ERA, 29 Ks in 19.2 IP, last game vs. SF was in 2019.
there ya go, revenge games are a real factor sometimes. I might have to play a few Castillo’s tonight as well.in fact a Castillo/Gausman isn’t the worst idea because even if you have to sacrifice 4 points on the win the K totals they should pile up should more than make up for that.
The NL’s worst team OPS was 673 in 2019, suggesting the kind of productivity we’ve seen so far is not completely outside of the realm of possibility.
On the bright side, they are currently at 644, 12th in the league. The Reds ranked 12th in 2019, finishing at 736.
Or, the 14th ranked 2019 Giants finished at 694. To equal that number would require a pace over 700 the rest of the way. Cheer up!
Hey on the bright side the Giants continue to play outstanding defense.Crawford 2 great plays on balls hit away from the shift with all in one side motion throw to gun a runners out by a eyelash.Dubon nice stretch out dive toward right center that prevented a double. Then there’s freaking Slater’s all out hustle outstanding catch falling over the railing on everyone’s thinking what a play,to be denied by this mysterious netting that grazed the baseball,so the out didn’t count because of some people in the Giants organization have there heads up they’re asses and extended netting all the down, to the foul poles and they don’t even have fans down there?Just ridiculous! Just constantly finding new ways to ruin this great game..
There’s something to be said about beating teams like the Rockies, and there are a lot of middling teams, but if this offense keeps scuffling we won’t see any more of these 4-5 game winning streaks.
Those non-contact drills are paying off…
1. Tommy La Stella (L) 2B
2. Mike Yastrzemski (L) RF
3. Alex Dickerson (L) LF
4. Brandon Belt (L) 1B
5. Evan Longoria (R) 3B
6. Brandon Crawford (L) SS
7. Buster Posey (R) C
8. LaMonte Wade Jr (L) CF
9. Kevin Gausman (L) P
My excitement for grave duggar may have blinded me to Lamonte Wade. Heard an interview with him and he sounds outstanding Plus we could use more brothers on the team.
What excitement would that be?
GD has reached his peak, and now only will be
used in a emergency callup due to an injury..
I’m now open to the idea of the Wade-duggar surprising me. That’s all I was saying and I’m rooting for him to get there.
I think Wade had a couple hits in his first game as a Gigante….
At some point in the latter half of last nights game, it occurred to me that a small infusion of fresh blood might be needed to inject a bit of energy to the lineup—Wade. We’ll see, of course, but 7 LH batters in the array sure looks different from last night’s somnolence.
On that @Rivercats twitter thread, they are playing right now. Ramos #80 whacked a double and they led 3-0 in first but A’s got 2 back off Wood #57 I think in 2nd. They open AAA season May 6 and first home game May 20.
We have not had enough flappers praise God in thanks for how we dodged the bumgarner bullet. Can you imagine how bummed out we’d be if we gave that guy a hundred million dollars and he was pitching to a double digit ERA?
I was having the same thought recently, Craig. Management definitely got that one right.
I’m with you Craig. After seeing the overpay of the bore core, and Mad Bum I’m converted to the Bill Walsh school of better to get rid of a guy a year too early than an year too late!
works fine if you’ve got a Steve Young ready to take Montana’s place. Not sure that’s exactly where Zaidi sits.
Got that right Willied..
it is more complicated than that. Yes, if you have a Steve Young backing up it’s an easy call. But if you pay a guy top dollar for something THEY DID in their career and then they immediately start sucking that contract affects what you can do with the rest of your roster. Bill Walsh was right, get rid of a guy a year too early rather than hold on to them a year too late.
Zaidi inherited a train wreck in a bunch of shitty contracts and an abysmal farm system. He’s just trying to get the train back on the tracks.
i have always been from this school. I think it stems from my horse racing life, horses go down sometimes and their careers are over instantly. Can’t get too attached. I take the same approach with players on my favorite teams. And I’d rather they go away healthy and get overpaid by someone else than have us overpay for them and have them turn into bgad contracts.
i will also say, Will Clark had a lot to do with this take. When he left, I was devastated. I vowed never again to get attached to an SF Giant (or any player from any team I follow)
dude is raking in triple A. If we can’t have of’s who hit how about one who does and who plays outstanding defense?
#graveduggar
There’s no keeping him down…
Four? hits by Duggar. For real?
Big deal,Does playing against each other at an alternate site count as baseball?
Am I missing something cause there not playing AAA ball yet are they?
No and no.
Sacto starts playing real games in early May.
you guys are a crack up. I love The Grave Duggar name and will till I die (when he buries me). I guess I have been to vociforious in my support of him because of that. I am not an idiot I know who The Grave Duggar is: he’s a guy with a fantastic nickname who isn’t probably going to make a dent in the major leagues. I’m sorry so many of these jokes flew over you and I had to type all this out……
thanks to San Dawg and Loo for keeping the jokes flowing…..
I still think a dent is not out of the question.
Truthfully, the nickname was originally intended as a putdown…
it may have been a putdown but it became one of the most glorious nicknames in Flap history. It put Count Chocula and even The Bowker Gang to shame. I’m wearing the jersey you sent to me as I type this, by the way.
we should have a thread that ranks best Flap nicknames. That Doughy Fuck was up there, too
A few that come to mind:
El Presidente
McGiggles
Ort-Rod
The Undertaker
Big Sweaty
Mac the Oaf
TFLR/The Fresh Wince
I wondered to SD if you were, as Brits say, “taking the piss.”
Kind of like his career, it’s run its course.
Walsh ness is fine given the context. If Zaidi were allowed to release the entire BC on waivers tomorrow by ownership, where would he find adequate (key word, not inexperienced kids who didn’t even play last year) to replace them? He doesn’t have Steve Young types ready to roll, yet. Coming perhaps in few years but not now.
To cop something from a meme I cannot attribute regarding a little girl. “When the BCs are good they’re very, very good and when they are bad, they’re horrid.?
Moosetakas looks like his name. Never noticed that before.
Well past couple of games the ball seems to be carrying pretty well to RF.
Not the start the Giants needed when you can’t hit lick.
Gausman really got lit up giving up 2 run Bombs twice..
That’s away to get back in it! Yazzer that was sweet!
Could be HR derby tonight!
YazMaTaz! We’re in the ballgame. Sorta. Kinda. Just tuned in with him at bat with LaStella on base. They did the same things as the Reds did twice. My pre-game prediction of a major-league pitcher’s duel appears to be in tatters. Baseball. Ya gotta love it.
I’m digging the start of this ballgame!!
Unbefriggenreal. Dueling 2-run bombs. Oppo field for the Craw. We are back in the game and not yet outta the first. Nobody could have predicted this pitcher predicament.
Wow. Boom boom. Out go the lights,
time out to enjoy some fucking solid gold
winker, wanker, wonker, honker. He’s been a royal pain for SF so far in this series. He scored that 5th run by getting on with two out. Need to get back at Castillo. Gausman is gascan tonight.
Castellanos was one player I wished the Giants were aggressive at going after before he landed with the Reds. Just a damm good player that rakes the ball, a good outfielder, and a run producer with power & speed..
Watching a game on ESPN is a trying experience. Their focus is on just about anything except the actual game.
Did they replay the long interview with Ken Burns yet? That sort of dominated the Mets Phillies game. That guy has too much influence. He’s a hack.
No, or not yet, but there was an interview with an SI writer re Jackie Robinson, complete with split screen.
Yeah the burns interview was mainly about 42 too. Or burns’s version of 42. There also during the game on the side was an amusing interview with Jim Brown, who could not decipher most of the inane leading questions tossed his way.
57 pitches through 3 IP. Can Gausman go five tonight? Battle of the bullies looms.
After 3: Castillo 58, Gausman 57. 115 pitches thrown in the game and we’re just entering the 4th inning.
the archways being closed are really affecting tonight. We have 20 mph winds. The Giants should never open them again
It’s still colder then a well diggers ass tonight…
New cars have front grills that stay closed for aerodynamic purposes until the engine needs some air. Giants could do the same. Open the knothole cavern occasionally, give the free fans a thrill. Or they could put a really exclusive club in the space.
Castillo does a great job of patterning his pitches to set up out situations. In the process, though, he has thrown a lot of balls and several have been fouled-off. Result: 78 pitches through 4 IP. He’s gonna hafta crunch down to go more than six tonight….if that.
Hit for Gausman here/leave him in for couple more innings now he’s settled down?
I like this move even if he is practically an automatic out.
Nice work by Gausman. He’s good for 2 more innings max.Time to get him a lead and a victory for a change..
LaStella singles on the 8th pitch. Three hits tonight. What a pest. Glad he’s ours.
LaStella the left handed Barrels..
Wonder if his grand pappy ever did that…
Dick is a Jarrett Parker-like twitchy fuck in the box…
They sure did Dick them selves out of that potential inning..
Castillo Dicked himself outta that promising inning with a down n out changeup. Sucker pitch.
The ridiculous outside strike against lefthanded batters is reason enough to … kill the ump. It is well past time.
Xoot, now there’s an interview with Jimmy Rollins.
Tie game!
LongoBombo against a nasty-assed reliever.
Fuck yeah!
Told some friends I am texting with at 4-2 that I felt a comeback game tonight. Make it so, boys!
Longo ties it up with a blast!!
Doolittle sucks anyway, he should go back and play with his animals!!
Slatered!
Austin triple alley!
First 3-bagger of the season for the Giants. Perfect time for it and good on Kapler pinching Slater for LaMonte.
Giants look well rested after yesterday’s day off…
Lulz…
Bench is just about emptied now, but we do have that slender lead. Are the bullies up to the 3 inning exposure?
Trade rumor:
Seattle offering France straight up for India…
Looks like a second offer is in there. Felix? German for India.
Was Mark Portugal consulted on this?
Its all Greek to me.
I think Craw was pissed off. He had a shot at that pop up.
No magic Wandy tonight…unhinged by a squib infield hit, Peralta promptly balks and then a wild-pitch, capped by giving up a single to tie the game. Bottom of Reds lineup and a pair of pinch-hitters at that.
I assume you are not watching, Stix. It was more bad luck than a loss of composure.
Man that was about as cheap a run to tie it up that you will ever see..
Strange move by Kapler in switching Solano for LaStella. Depletes the bench in the 7th.
Now Mauricio pinch-hits. Last bench bat is Casali, our reserve catcher. Kap’s pulling out all the stops.
mm good D in OF with Dubon in CF and Slater in LF.
Dubon hit that pretty hard, good AB and it did move runner to 3b.
Up to Wilmet to break the 0-15
Perfect!
That’ll work…
Nice, back in front without a hit.
That’s how you draw up a perfect run to take the lead!
I reallly like how the pro’s pro Longoria talked with Flores to give him some advice on that AB,just to be patient and get a ball up to get the run home..
That AB by Yaz was a good sign on top of the earlier bomb. Hard throwing lefty couldn’t put him away.
Maybe this one is the wake-up game for the offense.
Don’t like this match up…
for the Reds, that is…
Neither did the Moose.
Wow, 3 Ks for Rogers!
Welcome back to the Neighborhood Mr.Rodgers..
Only with a submariner. Gets Moustakas on a curve which runs up and in. Obviously el Greco hasn’t seen many upside-down yakkers.
A vision troubles my mind: Rogers comes in again tomorrow, Krukow uses the word magical ten times, and Rogers then hangs up half a dozen XBHs before he gets through his three.
