WOW
If you are going to lose 21 games in a row, that 21st has got to be lost in comedic, historic style. And if you want to give the D-backs credit for anything they accomplished that goal last night in spades.
My favorite part of that grand salami was the moment leading up to it. The camera panned to the crowd, everyone was on their feet, excitement was building, After all the shit we went through this last year and a half it was dramatic and emotional to watch them prepare for a possible celebration and then….the release of pure joy when that damn ball hit the water. So fucking great.
This is no joke, I went to change the POTD to Kat’s call of the grand slam and I can’t even figure out how to do it. The back end of wordpress has changed (again) and it’s not letting me change it. LOL. I’ll fiddle around with it at work later today.
This.
I just watched the 8th again and I agree. The crowd on their feet beforehand is great. What an inning!
it’s nice that we can agree on this and crypto, it makes being so far apart on Star Wars a little easier to tolerate.
Don’t know whose side this puts me on but I’ve never seen a single minute of any Star Wars movie…
May the Force be with you, Loo.
i got the POTD changed out–of course wordpress has made the back end of their website more complicated. Why does this always have to happen? Now I’m worried that killing the aged POTD might be bad luck for the rest of our season. I pray I’m wrong.
When you believe in things
That you don’t understand,
Then you suffer,
Superstition ain’t the way,
No, no, no
Well, that’s one for the ages, no doubt about it. What a comeback with Yaz doing his grandpa and the family proud. Does anyone know the last time the Giants overcame a 7 run deficit?
Wow is right. What a crazy fucking win. I was following on LameDay (while working) and it was 7-3 end of 2. Gail started making some noise a few innings later. I finished work and went and caught the final four innings. I knew at 7-3 that they could rally and even texted some friends and said they were due for a big comeback win. Damn! Win today and win the series (and send the snakes to being tied for worst road loss record).
I hope Gail made it safely to sunrise after last night’s celebration
LOL…she went to bed before the 8th inning. How you can do that when you have such a game escapes me. She got her beauty rest last night. 😉
Let’s get greedy now and take them all Chi,só the D-backs can set the alltime record at 23 straight road losses and it will be the SF Giants who gave them their final snake bite in history. After completely blowing a gasket and a 7-0 lead, their is no way last night’s game will not effect them in tonight’s game.
Losing is a contagious disease and the D-backs have it, the whole organization should be quarantined like in Outbreak, but just after this series ends..
I had the same thought Kat. Sweep their asses AND set the ALL TIME record for road losses at the same time. Make it so!
I’ve listened to all the Salami calls and Flem had the best one….
Yeah, Chi, they were due. This one kinda sorta makes up for the recent heartbreakers. This team definitely has something going on. I’m not sure how much I’ve bought into the idea of chemistry being part of a baseball team’s success, but this team sure seems to have it. I’ve always viewed baseball as a series of individual performances, versus something like basketball or football where precise teamwork is critical. I mean how did those late ’70’s Yankees teams dominate if chemistry is a thing in baseball? Those fuckers hated each other. Sheer talent made them the best team in baseball.
But this Giants’ squad, I don’t know, it seems like a thing, and with Zaidi pulling the strings, Kap is developing into a pretty good manager.
GO GIANTS! SWEEP THE SNAKES!
Yeah LJ..Same goes for the Swinging A’s in 72-74 who really were swinging at each other but on the field chemistry are not they were lethal winning 3 straight W/S titles, till cheap wad Charles Finley starting dismantling a dynasty..
Lurker-Not so sure about chemistry and baseball either but I am a believer in philosophy of the team. We obviously have a team full of fighters. Once again missed a classic game but I did see the highlights and what a shot in the arm for the team. An amazing win.
I don’t think there is one cookie-cutter answer, LJ. Yanks probably did not have it. Giants in 2010, 2012, and 2014, and this year do. I think it is more in believing in each other, believing in the coaches and process, and subsequently picking each other up, AND genuinely liking each other. I believe chemistry can make a difference…
And let’s not forget that it was the splash bomb off the shovel of the resurgent Grave Duggar that breathed life into a team facing certain death. Hitting Dubon for GD in the 8th with 2 on, nobody out and ANOTHER lefty (Wade) on deck was a boneheaded move…
Kap has plenty of room for improvement, but he’s getting better, IMO.
Early fave for MOY?
Yes.
Duggar fucking crushed that ball. The dude has some serious pop, he just needs consistency. He’s definitely improved this year and his defense will always make him valuable.
Agree.
2 huge screwups by Arizona in the 9th, the Solano chopper to 3rd ruled a hit, which was a joke as the 3rd sacker totally butchered it.And Casali the last guy off the bench and the least likely to do anything coaxes out a huge walk! Just had that feeling it was liftoff time for Yaz as it was setup so perfectly..
Maybe chance to sell high on Casali. 3 hits and all important BB in 2 days vs. D Bax. He might add vet presence to their sorry excuse for pitching staff.
Long and pen held them off, but Littell has a role he’s done well in–leave him there.
Mac nailed it at 8:12 last night, calling for comeback to match what Durant did.
Sports, man, what a trip. Two of the teams I root for made epic comebacks last night. Keeps me coming back for more.
2 NBA coaches hit the chopping block …Stan Van Gundy out after just one season with the Pelicans .Scott Brooks out after 5 years in Washington..
Looking to get back in the NBA possibility is Kentucky Wild Cats coach John Calaprini ( sp?)
Scott Brooks’ basketball career is kind of a cool story.
He played high school ball in Manteca, Calif., a relatively small Central Valley city that used to be famous for how much it stank. The city had a Spreckles Sugar factory that provided many jobs, and a lot of very stinky air pollution. (Eventually the factory left after many years.)
Brooks was a high school star, who played college ball somewhere, and somehow ended up in the NBA minor league, whatever it was called in those days. He was the point guard on the minor league championship team one season, but still didn’t seem destined to sniff the NBA.
But then a huge break happened. His minor league head coach got hired to be an NBA head coach! And….that NBA team was on the look for a solid back-up point guard. Someone who would be happy to just come off the bench, play decent point guard on offense, and play good defense. (Point guard was different in those days. On offense, you had to call plays and run things. You didn’t have to be a big scorer.)
That coach told his NBA team’s executives: “I know someone that can do that!”
And Brooks became an NBA player, and was a bench player for many years, and from there got into coaching. And eventually became an NBA head coach for a couple of different teams.
Not bad for a kid from stinky Manteca.
They also had the only waterslides in Nor Cal.
Yes, the waterslides were very popular!
According to Wikipedia, Brooks’ college playing career was:
“He played point guard at San Joaquin Delta College (a junior college) and Texas Christian University before playing his last two years at the University of California, Irvine.”
One of my old supervisors, really good mgr. and very funny guy from Buffalo (and butt of endless sports barbs), lived in Manteca for long time.
He’s was kind of short and stocky, so…I used to bug him by asking what the word “manteca” referred to Spanish—which is “lard.”
Yeah, in those days that city was joked about a lot. People driving on the 99 Freeway always knew when they were going through Manteca. They would frantically roll up the windows in their cars. That factory really fouled the air.
Fun facts about Brooks from Wikipedia:
He bounced around the NBA as a player, and won a championship in the mid-1990s with the Rockets, in one of those two championship seasons that the Rockets had while Jordan was playing baseball.
Also Brooks won NBA Coach of the Year in 2010 when he was the head coach of the Thunder.
One of the keys to success for the Manteca Waterslides is that it was upwind of the sugar factory.
TMI, Pedro . . .
Good stuff.
So does Pedro want his balls to be slippery, sticky, rough, maybe textured balls?
Pedro cracks me up with that statement..
Always thought Scott Brooks was pretty good coach.
As long as we’re riffing on Manteca, that is also the name of one of the most famous tunes of all time in latin jazz. Originally written in 1947 by Dizzy Gillespie, arranger Gil Fuller and Cuban born percussionist Chano Pozo, i have a short version played by Dizzy Pozo and the big band from late 1947 from Ken Burns Best of Gillespie cd. A year later Mr. Pozo would be shot dead in Harlem NYC.
Manteca gonna be melting this week. I posted a version of the tune, but changed my mind. There are some really good ones on Youtube, Hard to choose one.
Definitely. Think I liked one by Mongo Santamaria the best and it comes with cool vid. The band chant out a lric during theme, Chano Pozo oye Manteca. Nice sax solo too from band.
ah they took down the vid of Mongo I liked. the 5 minute one of his band taken from Greatest Hits red cover is good and it’s same tune with vocal chant.
The 3 minute Dizzy big band one is just iconic; the rhythm of the song is so infectious and his opening blast is just fantastic.
Years ago when I was a kid, you always knew you were passing by Manteca on Hwy 99 because of the heavy stink like steer manure when you passed by a facility there — I think it was producing sugar out of sugar beets, but I could be wrong. I always associate Manteca with that stench to this day, though that has been gone for a long long time. Also, I just learned Manteca means “butter” in Espanol. I knew “mantequilla” was butter, I never associated Manteca with it, after all these years. Learn something new every day…
The Spreckles Sugar factory was the culprit. The factory did relocate eventually, maybe to another country for all I know.
The word manteca means butter in some Hispanic cultures and it means lard in some others.
Yeah, that was the culprit.
Stinky. There used to be all number of semi-trucks/trailers around that area carrying the sugar beets from the fields, generally they were to the west, I think, of the plant. I seem to remember that those sugar beets were huge, maybe cantaloupe sized or bigger. Must have taken a lot of water for those. IDK if the farmers still grow much of those anymore. I found a CA sugar beet website that says there’s only one sugar beet plant left in CA, in the Imperial Valley. There’s still a C&H sugar plant in Crockett, right near the Carquinez bridge. It uses sugar cane, though, per it’s website. Don’t know if any of the cane is from Hawaii anymore. Pineapples have gone the way of the Dodo bird in Hawaii — nothing left. Too expensive. Thailand and Costa Rica and Phillipines now, I think. First time I visited Oahu in the ’80s I went to the Dole pineapple plant, at the end of the tour they had a pineapple juice spigot — just pour and drink as much as you want, self service. I should have brought some rum with me…
There’s a town named Spreckles just south of Salinas (another interesting name) that was still home to a huge sugar factory back in the eighties. Local I worked out of Watsonville took long hopper trains to the place, late at night. Sea breezes dispersed the production stench, I guess, because when I think of that job now I remember the pleasant earthy smell of the many thousand tons of recently harvested beets we delivered.
That area is a big spinach area, too, and I think maybe strawberries, also.
I just ate some really good watermelon. This state is an agricultural marvel (as long as it has water readily available.)
The water issue is a whole other big issue.
In the summer, the long perishable train comprising nothing but refrigerated boxcars used to speed out of the Salinas Valley every night, headed east. Great train to get either from Watsonville going home or out of Oakland to Roseville because it had to move fast, no stops. I used to enjoy reading the train lists showing reefers full of broccoli, cauliflower, strawberries, etc., headed to places like Toronto and NYC.
Used to be, I think still are, thousands of acres planted to strawberries along 156 from Prunedale to Castroville. South side of road. Strawberries, though, are always ranked in top Dirty Dozen of fruit/veggies with pesticides. If you’re not into organic, OK, but think about it a little when you get strawberries. Definitely give non-organics a good rinse, though that won’t get the stuff inside…

New Jersey used to stink like rotten eggs depending where you entered from.
Mac may or may not agree.
I think they’ve cleaned it up a lot over the years.
One common line was: “New Jersey, where a fart is refreshing”
Joe Piscopo used to do that annoying character on Saturday Night Live that was not a flattering representation of New Jersey.
This is pretty brutal.
Piscopo disappeared from the entertainment world relatively quickly.
He and Carrot Top seemed to think steroids would help their comedy careers.
Karen Black on the other hand was outstanding.
Not even funny . . . Plus, it’s a rip off of a classic movie scene which Karen Black was also in (she “disappeared from the entertainment world relatively quickly” too).
Karen Black was pretty good in Nashville. The Tammy Wynette-ish character, again related to her great FEP role. In the middle of her big Nashville performance, a middling country weeper, iirc, she pauses for an instrumental break and says, “Here’s Vassar.” Then Vassar Clements takes over the screen and plays his astonishing fiddle for a while — Robert Altman’s way to say that his satire was not attacking good country music or culture, rather just the crap.
I leave you with this . . .
That was scary stuff when I saw it on TV all those many years ago.
“Phoenix Suns — superstar point guard Chris Paul has been sidelined for an indefinite period of time … as part of the NBA’s COVID-19 health and safety protocols”
Oooops. CP had been vaccinated as well. How long were those Yankee guys out?
I need to watch FEP again. it has been a long time.
walk off single for Charlie Blackmon in 9th and Rox beat padres again in sherpville. yikes think they are 2-9 slump.
Yesssss!!!! Now we need the Dogs to falter.
1. LaMonte Wade Jr (L) LF

3. Buster Posey (R) C
4. Brandon Belt (L) 1B
5. B. Crawford (L) SS
6. Donovan Solano (R) 2B

Go Giants!
DeScaffoling stands tall!!
He’s going to T-Bone that Arizona LU!!
Dude always brings on his attitude face when it’s his start..
Saw twitter stuff from Crowley etc. saying both Dickerson and Ruf should return off IL by weekend. Means couple guys have to leave or be shuffled back onto IL.
Blogger on another site said he hoped Long took Cueto’s spot in rotation. Webb is still ways away.
That’s 8 OFs counting Dubon, and they still have Vosler and Flores on IF.
Another RBI hit for deGrom, and the crowd goes nuts. But yeah, let’s bring the DH to the NL.
And exits with sore shoulder after striking out 8 of 9…
Time for gimme shelter to inspire Desclafani.
The new crowd noise detracts from the effect. D Backs probably didn’t FEEL those piercing guitar notes or fully hear the screams.
Looks more like he went with “As Tears Go By”…
Starfucker?
“In the summer, the long perishable train comprising nothing but refrigerated boxcars used to speed out of the Salinas Valley every night, headed east.” Dam, Xoot, sounds like something right out of “East of Eden”… Nice imagery. And yes, Loo, that stretch of the NJ Turnpike from around Linden up past Newark airport etc., past all the refineries, man… driving up that way, had to roll up the windows but even that didn’t do any good. Cancer Alley, it was referred to often. Obviously not like that anymore. I think.
Right Paul.
Many football Giants got cancer…
Unbelievable!
Busting one ☝️ for the lead!!!
When Donnie B just walked up to the box did he use the knob of his bat to tap the ump’s steel toed shoe? Swear he did. Saying hola, maybe.
I took a quick look. He tapped the shin guard under the umps pant leg.
Wild ass inning one.
76 combined pitches in the first inning that took 45 freaking minutes !
Atleast the Giants came out of that craziness with a 4-2 lead..
I don’t get these inane wind diagrams they’ve been using.
I really think it’s just some kind of prank on the viewers…
Krukow’s ump scouting reports are a prank. Total nonsense.
A shutdown inning would be nice.
Buster looking like a lock for his second COTY award.
I looked it up and it’s been done a bunch of times.
Liriano, of all people the only one to do it in both leagues…
Yaz! He’s healthy. Finally.
And Belt’s finally heathy too
Another triple for Belt!
And stays put at third.
Damm wasted leadoff triple by Belt..
Should’ve called the Wizard of Oz to get him home in a balloon…
Don’t fuck with the Duggar v
Grave Duggar Bombs Away!
That’s the Spring Training oppo-Duggar we were hearing about!
Grave bomb!
Dug in and Duggar’s it out!
Wade jr going yard!!
Wade getting in on the action! Bombs away bitches!
Wade oppo-bomb!
Bust this bitch wide open!
Barrels of runs!
Bigtime Barreling up for 2 more runs and picking up Crawdaddy..
Giants really abused their former farmhand pitcher..
Best line ever by Jeff Kent:”The money lies with the RBI’s”
First thing out of his mouth I bet sitting down at the Arbitration table..
Still can’t believe he’s not in the HOFespecially if you hold the record for most HR’s by a second base men..
Wiiiilbuuurrr Bomb!
A horse is a horse of course of course, unless it’s the Famous Mr.Ed!!
Belt on 🔥 my god this team is rolling!!
5 Bombs 💣 💣💣💣💣
Mr. Wilmet!
Wilmer!!!Giants just thrive in these PH roles with Bombs!
Shit it seemed like just a few years back u couldn’t count on anybody coming off the bench and coming thru..
Who goes if Dick and Ruf get activated this weekend?
Tough calls…
Tough call for sure. Vosler? Wade?
Sockman? A reliever?
No, Kruk, Posey was the play. He’s not gonna beat that out.
This is ridiculous.
Good God!!!! Blammo!! Belt blast!! That was a missile.
Manteca mia, the D Bags do screw up a lot.
Belted! Giants tearing it up….
Since 7-0 last night, Giants have outscored the D-Backs 22-3.
Make it 22-4.
Bums down 2-0 bottom of the 5th, but runners on 1st and 2nd, one out. Kershaw and Wheeler. Go Phillies!
Just pull the goddamn ball in this park and you’ll hit as many HRs as anywhere else…
On the rare eighty degree Fahrenheit night.
Well that was a wasted pitch. Krukow’s only semi coherent these days and the solicitude Flemm and Miller offer him may last all year.
ZZ Slop.
ZZ Top’s beard got in the way.Just a ridiculous error now just cost him 2 runs..
Kruk looking for a lame excuse for him..
Tonight’s game is not a clinic on playing defense from either team.
ZZ Flop. WTF? I’ve seen better throws from my grandpa. And he’s been dead for 20 years.
I guess this lead isn’t safe.
Ahhh, beat me to it Mac!
Flop is better, but Wille already used it yesterday for Littell.
Huh. Missed that one as well.
I bet there aren’t 5 guys in baseball faster than the Grave Duggar from home to first…
Please STFU, Miller with these endless fuckin stats…
Beatles song on a Google commercial.
Winner Winner Chicken Dinner!
