i’m not one to say I told you so but….
I found this yesterday looking for pictures from 1988 lol. I can’t remember who gave it to me. Pat the Bat wishing the Flap well.

Today is probably my favorite day of the year. I hope you guys have a good one.

Dubon btw in his first 3 games playing SS for Sac, playing A’s farm team in Vegas:
9-15 with double 2 BBs 2 Ks.
Vosler is playing 1b, continues to rake. But even McCarthy has .900 OPS.
Wonder if Z is experimenting for next year when they’ll probably be sans a Belt.
Sure hope they pick up Wilmet’s $ 3.5M option ($250k buyout).
Would they rotate 2-3 guys (Wade) at the initial sack?
Z has big decisions to make, but the upcoming buyer/seller one shouldn’t be one of them…
Meanwhile, Heliot Ramos. 1-11 for Richmond in July. BA .222 OPS .671 for season
June he went 15-97 with 2 bombs 32 Ks.
Slater is platoon (not everyday) OF, used primarily by Kap vs. LHP, where he is around league average hitter. Crushed game winner last night, blessed relief for him I’m sure. As James said, lotta bad months btw. 2020/21 around highlights.
Slater splits 2021:
Vs. LHP .202/.316/.429 .745 OPS
vs. RHP, OPS in .500s and 33 Ks in 85 PAs.
Interesting enough, he is better hitter at home (.167 on road), but has 5 of 8 bombs on road.
Paid off for Kap last night though.
Maybe they should send Heliot to Sactown to find his swing…
With the number of good winning Giants teams in the last 30 plus years, I dont think we ever had a team that beat up on the bad teams so easily, given last night was a solid come from behind team. I fully expect we win today and take 3 of 4 but have we ever had a team that so consistently won on the road??? And again for a team that I would not put in the Top 10 Giants teams in the the last 45 years, it is really hard to fathom how well they play and especially on the road….
Great points!
There was a flaky old Yankee fan on our block 7 billion years ago whose baseball mantra was “You gotta beat the patsies”
In his day, the Yanks would go like 18-4, 19-3, etc in the season series vs awful Washington…
Happy Independence Day, Flappers.
still my fav fireworks show of all time
LHP Caleb Smith goes for AZ today. ERA at just over 3.00, but has only made 7 starts in 25 appearances.
AZ pitching as you might guess from team already 30 games out of first, is dead last in NL for:
ERA runs hits and HRs allowed.
back in 70s, buddy of mine and his neighbor across street in quiet Cupertino hood used to spend lot of time and effort on fireworks. Great America one after dark used to be fun.
These days, with local fire danger and neighbors blasting stuff repeatedly at 1 AM, just not so into it.
The 4th of July was invented for rotten, school-hating kids to blow off steam and celebrate the beginning of summer…
For some reason I remember the Giants sweeping the Marlins in ’98, so looked it up and sure enough they went 9-0 vs. the Fish. I might look into what other one-sided season series wins they’ve had.
The year after they wiped us out of the playoffs, then sold off the whole team including Nen.
Hollow revenge…
I’m not big into 4th of July and New Year’s Eve because they’re big drinking “events.” An excuse for a lot of people to drink too much. Good to stay off the roads those nights.
The one thing used to be sitting on the front lawn watching a big community fireworks show off in the distance, but those shows have been cancelled nowadays because of the fire danger in California.
I don’t think anyone really enjoys fireworks on TV…
Unless it’s the start of The Honeymooners.
You’re right again, Mac…
Frankly, Jan. 6 has completely sapped any interest I have in the 4th of July as a remembrance this year. On Jan. 6 there were some people using flagpoles with U.S. flags on them to beat police officers.
Today I’m reflecting on where we’re at as a nation, and I feel very concerned.
And I try not to be a Debbie Downer. I look for the good going on, too.
The Giants’ season has been a wonderful lift. Every game has been very important so far. Different Giants heroes each victory. It’s very cool.
Something I’ve always enjoyed about baseball is the everyday-ness of it during the season.
Chi loves that Giamatti verse about that very thing…
As it will be today when Jaylin Davis gets the start hopefully against the Lefty.
Davis will quote Wyatt Earp: “You tell em I’m coming and Hell’s coming with me! “
Are you enjoying the “Forget the Alamo” story? A prof friend at UT San Antonio has been writing pieces on the Alamo for a few years now. Happy 4th!!
https://sanantonioreport.org/remember-the-alamo-for-what-it-really-represents/
Very good article; thanks!
In Brooklyn, we had Tony & Susan Alamo over on Cortelyou Road…
Phil Collins has bought Alamo artifacts over the years from various places and people, and has now donated them to the Alamo museum.
“includes a bronze cannon likely used by the Mexican Army during the Battle of the Alamo, the original battle orders from General Antonio López de Santa Anna ordering the attack on the Alamo, and more precious historic artifacts from the 1836 Battle of the Alamo carefully selected and added to the Phil Collins Collection over the years.”
It’s certainly better than having Dachau for a last name.
great article
Yogi Berra once said: “If you ain’t got pitching, you ain’t got nothin.’”
A great truism about baseball.
The D-Backs are kind of in that boat, especially when Bum got injured.
Nats and Dodgers playing early Fourth of July game in D.C. I remember maybe 10 years ago the Giants playing the 4th in DC on a ridiculously hot day and not putting up much of a fight.
I was at all those games 9 years ago, Mac. Hot day doesn’t even come close to describing it. We did take home a ring that year thou.
Best 4ths when we were living in Arlington was would drive kids over to the Pentagon right when the fireworks started and the police would let you just pull up. And then right before it ended we would then drive off to beat the crowd and the main hwy that cuts through Arlington we would pull up to a neighboring town Falls Church and the town would begin their fireworks show literally off the hwy. Again the police would let us pull right on the side of the hwy and we would be not more than 75 yards from where these fireworks would be launched. Nothing like that. Shocked they would allow the public to get that close. Very fun for the kids.
Big family barbeque here. Many haven’t seen in a year thanks to the pandemic. A bunch of Dodger fans among them. I’ll walk them to the Giant flag, enjoy my shot of whiskey for the victory and then remind them who’s still in FIRST👍
The one Giants 4th of July game that we attended was 2012. This massive wind storm dericho hit on a Friday night and we were out of electricity for four days in massive 100 degree heat and my oldest son and I were at the Tuesday night Giants gane when we got word that finally the electricity was back on.
Started to rain at the game and we just sat in it out in the center field seats finally feeling a wave of cool relief and knowing we were coming as a whole family to the 11 am 4th of July game the next day. Think Giants lost that Tuesday bight game we got home about 10 pm and another tstorm struck and there went the electricity again.
We get to Nats Park for the 11 am game and have seats in right in the shade. By 1 pm the seats were now in the sun and unbearable. Got the fuck out of there and headed to Rhode Island the next day for some sanity…of course I fly back and we had construction started and was a mess for a couple of months.
Happy 4th Flappers! Got out for 9 holes this morning. Taking it easy today and getting ready to take Harvey the RV to the beach tomorrow for 10 days of camping in Carlsbad. I get the first 5 nights and my buddy gets the second 5.
We took him out for a test run to the local VFW the other night and he ran like a champ. Not bad for a ‘78 Dodge!
Have fun SD!
Gausman scheduled for tomorrow vs. Cards, right? that would mean he would be set up for next Sunday at home vs. Nats I think.
I hope the Nats lay down for the Giants like they have for the Dodgers this weekend.
Yeah but that would not make him eligible to pitch in the A/S game.If he pitched Saturday he would be, tough call, but since the game is in Colorado his home state, I think he could still pitch Saturday I’d bet he wants to pitch in this A/S game u never know if it’s his last chance..
Happy 4th of July Flappers, heading out later to a pool party for my daughters best friend who happens to turn 30 today.Always thought the 4th is a kickass birthday 🎉 day!
D- backs were once 15-13 since then 8-49 ouch 😣
And in other news the King of Hotdog 🌭 eating( out at Coney Island sponsored by Nathan’s hotdogs)
Joey Chestnut woofs down a new record 76 hotdogs how does the stomach and bowels get thru that and the major blow that follows…🌭💩🌭💩🌭💩🌭💩
Loo re: 8:06, 1b next year “sansabelt” will be interesting. I think Wade Jr. is more in mix there than in OF, and Wilmet would be great platoon guy there. Not sure Wade makes the grab Davis did, though it would be easier reaching out for LH guy going toward the line than trying to backhand it like JD did.
That whole rant from Krukow on popup was weird–I’ve never heard that before ever, that the pitcher is the one who calls it. Isn’t his first job supposed to be getting out of the way?
Yeah, I mean if anyone should be directing the infielders, it’s the catcher who faces the field all game and is used to pop-ups. WTF does a CLOSER know about any of that???
He can yell not mine not mine.
I used to take my kids to Giants day games on the 4th (fireworks were usually on the night before). One year we saw Lincecum shut down the Astros. Poor Russ Ortiz started for Houston. Their young RF Pence looked dangerous. But Timmy was magnificent. I recall 4th games vs the bums, too. Then suddenly the Giants went on the road for the fourth. Our loss.
It’s a stupid holiday. Have you read the Decl? Among the long list of gripes about the British monarchy is, implicitly, that it interfered with the colonists’ efforts to wipe out the indigenous people. Bunch a fuckin rich white capitalist men declaring their right to exploit.
Happy fourth! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
We’ve certainly progressed in the last 60 years, during all of which I’ve been alive.
On a cold January day, one former president told us to ask not what the country could do for us, but what we could do for the country (each other, really). The crowd cheered. And, so, many went off to something called the Peace Corps, and spread the US gospel of freedom, democracy, and how to set up real things like running water and sewer systems that improved and saved lives, here and abroad. Others worked for civil and voters rights, resulting in the momentous 1964 Civil Rights Act.
Another former president, last night, essentially admitted committing tax evasion and said “so what ?”
The crowd cheered.
Happy 4th to all, and Go Giants ! …
There are six right wing justices on the SCt. Four of them were appointed by presidents who soundly lost the popular vote. Democracy? Plutocracy. And let’s not be distracted by the war mongering. Peace Corps indeed.
wait a sec Harvey is hitting the public roads?
Hell yes! First time in a year.
what’s the CA DMV know about good ol Harv?
Pat the Bat…that is so bad ass Craig! Great find.
Fucking bums won again. 9 in a row.
Let’s take the series from the snakes today…
1. Austin Slater (R) CF
2. Thairo Estrada (R) SS
3. M. Yastrzemski (L) RF
4. Buster Posey (R) C
5. Darin Ruf (R) 1B
6. Wilmer Flores (R) 3B
7. Donovan Solano (R) 2B
8. Jaylin Davis (R) LF
9. A. DeSclafani (R) P
8 out of 9 RH hitters.
Wonder when the last time they did that was – or if they ever fielded an all RH lineup.
A lot of big name regulars would have had to sit…
Happy Independence Day Flap Universe. Hope you all have a wonderful day!
Took Carolyne 3 out for a nice spin through the foothills this morn. Stopped at the river, pulled off the boots, and took a wade. Having a cold one in town and then heading home.
The great Aimee Mann:
“4th of July”
Today’s the fourth of July
Another June has gone by
And when they light up our town I just think
What a waste of gunpowder and sky
I’m certain I am alone
In harboring thoughts of our home
It’s one of my faults that I can’t quell my past
I ought to have gotten it gone
I ought to have gotten it…
Oh, baby, I wonder if when you are older
Someday
You’ll wake up
And say, ‘My God, I should have told her
What would it take
But, now here I am and the world’s gotten colder
And she’s got the river down which I sold her’
I’ve seen Aimee in concert in a number of different Bay Area venues:
Slim’s
Fillmore
Bimbo’s
Warfield
Mountain Winery
Montalvo Winery
Hardly Strictly Bluegrass in Golden Gate Park
And another park I’m forgetting the name of. They have a series of free concerts there every year.
Stern Grove, in SF. That’s the park I couldn’t think of.
Schwarber was the hottest-hitting player in MLB and I think he got injured in the first inning of their first game vs. the Dodgers, and missed the rest of the series.
The great John Doe:
“What ever happened, I apologize
So dry your tears and baby,
Walk outside— it’s the Fourth of July”
That’s a Dave Alvin song. John’s friend.
Yes, great song. The saddest of all 4th of July songs.
Here with Flaco! And los lobos y otros!
wow that was great. helluva of group
San Antonio link to James’s 9 a.m. too
Crawford and Gausman are in.
Mets and Yankees, haven’t seen that much of either team. Yanks currently sit 4th and only ahead of Orioles in their own division. For WC, as of now they trail A’s and Tampa, and they also are behind Blue Jays Tribe and rebuilding Mariners, yikes. Hal says heads won’t roll, but wonder how long patience will hold out.
I think it was Joel Sherman who said “It’s surprising how boring the Yankees are to watch.”
They have been for some time, IMO.
Their announcers only make it worse.
Total snooze-fest…
like a team out of 50s.
Flavor’s ASG bet is looking safe. deGrom only Met chosen and doesn’t want to pitch in it anyway.
Good chance he steps aside for deserving teammate, Taijuan Walker…
i’d love nothing more than to take $500 from the Boney One and his oakland loving ass
i’ve never understood why people hate on the Ortiz brothers. As far as I can tell they are cool as hell. This is a great story, too
perfect bunt, right past mound.
followed by 3 run bomb.
New York has always been a jockey hating town.
Although Cordero was a god to the Puerto Rican and West Indian brigade.
I haven’t seen any special hatred of the Ortiz brothers. Everyone knows
they help each other out and NBC actually showed flagrant video evidence of
that yesterday before the Suburban. I think I told you that I’ve heard Irad is the
better dude of the two. Johnny V is the most respected here…
good to know. I like JV, too.
6.17 seconds 2nd to home. Imagine being able to do that……
Only in my rocket 🚀 powered wheelchair!
Cutting the corner could be a challenge though.
Probably Take out Wotus in the 3rd base coaching box..
60 yards with a turn – that’s NFL WR caliber, I’d think…
We would definitely prefer the Giants win the division, and hopefully they will; but if not, then hopefully the first Wild Card spot. But just for the heck of it, I looked at how much of a lead the Giants have for the 2nd Wild Card spot, and it looks like 9 1/2 games to me.
There are currently only 6 teams in the NL with winning records.
Hey Loo–is that closing shot you show from twilight zone with struggling ventriloquist and Caesar? episode is on right now, Decades channel
he gets talked into breaking into a Deli to pay the rent. Landlady is nice and niece taunts him and listens at door…and turns him in.
Caesar and Me from 1964
I think Mac knows that for sure.
I just bumbled into it…
Wille, ha, forgot TZ was on. I sent Loo a clip of the closing door scene a while back when the episode was on another channel.
Few things better than watching a ballgame on 7/4
What kind of name is “Pavin” come on what are we doing here
Davis overmatched there. He looked like a minor leaguer there
Lmao DO NOT doubt a good Stanford man
Austin Tater!
Another Slater tater!
Ain’t no Slater haters here, right? (WillieD’s clear eyed view this a.m. was good. Slater stays but basically platoons. But he stays dammit!)
Are you kidding me? Flappers been giving this guy shit for weeks. He wins games. He stays
Possibly a strict platoon with the Grave Duggar.
Wonder why Kotter usually bats Slater first and GD way down.
I don’t get the logic…
As long as you got a good Stanford man in the LU with a guy who wields a fucking shovel it doesn’t matter where they.hit. twin would back me on that too
Slater saved his spot on the roster. He was probably pretty close to getting the Sac-town express.
Does have options. I think James had this spot on–since Kap era he’s had 3 good months and 3 very bad ones, including September last year and june this year. Miller said before bomb last night he was 4-41–90% of the time he came up he made an out, and had zero 0 HRs entire month. Raking the DBax fwiw.
Platoon guy, not supposed to see RHPs. Davis does need to show he can hit LHP and get himself firmly into Kap’s OF platoon.
After A/S break bunch of Giants hitters might come off IL and someone will pay price for that.
Some one may get traded.
Jay-Kat needs to show something soon.
He’s walking the same tightrope as the Grave Duggar was earlier this season.
Him and the Sock Man are very vulnerable…
yep
Sac-town weather forecast for next Saturday is 109. I kid you not.
Back in the late 80s I worked a summer in Sac. Most days over 100 in one month ever! bragged the local rag. Not so funny these days. That records probably long gone.
Jaylin Davis has a weird body. I’m not trying to be a dick about this. His upper body is short and squatty it doesn’t even look like it should go on top of his lower body. His body doesn’t make sense to me
He looks strong but soft at the same time.
Seems to have a gut, no?
Good description. Does look strong also looks soft. And that upper body looks like it belongs on top of a non athletic man
One thing about Slater when he connects the ball flies forever, he has hit some of the longest HR’s uncoiled in that slim body. His hips and the torque he creates is impressive when he’s on..
Belt should hit 500′ HRs. 6’4″ 230 lb yet the 5’10 185 Yaz out powers him.
Does krukow’s term “specialty pitch” mean anything? Does he mean secondary, or off speed? He throws it around freely, as if he has a back load of expired pine meat he needs to repurpose.
I can’t wait to use to use that somewhere and I never even heard of pine meat…
Grab some pine meat? Anyway, I don’t see no (c) claims around here. Now, if money starts falling…
Weekend 83 of working on the house and man, am I getting burned out. Hitting the Brother Thelonious, my favorite beer.
Kids are all in Montana though. Funny story, my daughter Allison got a job offer in Big Sky Montana. Her boyfriend has been wanting to move to the mountains for a while, and a property mgmt company literally threw a bunch of money at Al to go, so they moved 3 weeks ago. She asked her brother if he wanted to join er and rent out the studio next to her place and he said sure. He hopped on Indeed and applied for a job at a place called the Yellowstone Club. They called him back 15 minutes later, and after a 20 minute convo, offered him the job as a valet and
He has been there a week, and I found out the Yellowstone Club is the most hoi polloi place in the world. Day one, he met Justin Timberlake, day 2 he met Tom Brady, day 3 Jessica Biel. The Club has its own personal 15 chairlift ski resort. And it’s own personal golf course. Aaron Rodgers has a place there, and there’s some big skins game tourney in a couple days. Mickelson and DeChambeau, Rodgers and Brady. Crazy.
And Christina is out there visiting.
Backwoods trapper hunter I worked with in Alaska in 75 left Montana because it had gotten too crowded.
Ruf Ruf!
Ruffing it
Gonna be sweatin’ out those Buster x-rays…
I can’t believe he stayed in for that last pitch, he was in some serious pain.
“I never even heard of pine meat…”
I assume you’re joking there, reader of Ball Four that you are.
Could be some (c) issues there
Strange injury. Just clipped the padded hand badly. X d fingers here. Now we get Casali and his fucking hot pink and sapphire gear.
I wonder if Duggar visits Tombstone when the Giants are in Arizona.
Tromp! WTF happened to Posey? Too much going on.
Foul tip off of his glove-hand thumb that was very painful.
https://www.mlb.com/video/posey-exits-after-hit-by-foul-tip
D-Backs run into an out. A really terrible team.
And, we appreciate that…
Reddick is always over aggressive vs the Giants. I saw Buster gun him down at 2B in exactly that same situation in 2012 when he was with Oakland.
Huh? Caught it wrong? Thumb thing? Ahhh didn’t see the foul tip.
Samantha is sending good vibes to Posey.

I’m very worried about this…
Yeah, Posey threw off his glove like it was on fire.
Vogt still reminds me of Chi…
It’s amazing how many Giants get hot as soon as we give up on them…
John, yeah, I remember that July 4th game in DC, I was visiting the family, watching the game with my Dad out in Stroudsburg PA. I want to say 2010, it was one of the series years. Giants indeed looked miserable and half-dead and got beat pretty bad, and it was on that day that I started to forever hate the Nats, from the announcers to the fans, as they were all ragging on and laughing at the Giants and acting like MLB should’ve just given them the World Series trophy right then in July because it was a foregone conclusion. Of course the Giants got the last laugh. But man, it was HOT that weekend there in the good ol’ northeast.
“We took him out for a test run to the local VFW the other night and he ran like a champ.” Great to hear Harvey is back, baby!
Harvey the RV is a really good name.
Bozo posted he was there, it was 2012, so right on, it was a Series year. Sounds like GHead was there, too. And yeah, I remember those annoying Nats announcers.
Does anyone actually watch that show that has Kuiper’s son?
huh?
You’re better off not knowing.
Got to like Mr. Kotter giving DeScafolding the rope to finish.
Damn, couldn’t get that last out. Still, great job by DeSclafani.
Hah!!!!
Desclafani has really been a stud. Yet another great pickup by Farhan.
He’s a defection or two from the ASG…
YES! BUSTER’S X-RAYS NEGATIVE!!!
Whew!
Just a contusion…
phew!
oh boy
Throw a fucking strike.
Is he afraid to throw a strike?
He’s rusty?
