Happy Birthday DAD!
Well, the dream may have been to beat them 3-0 and move on to the NLCS but that wasn’t too realistic. Some questionable moves by Kap last night starting with bringing in Leone for Gausman who was still pitching effectively. I could see it MAYBE if he replaced him with a lock down reliever with post season experience but Leone is just a rando guy pitching in his first playoff game. Whatever, LA seemed pretty locked in last night so maybe they would have done the same thing to Gasman but letting the game get away there was inexcusable.
I’d like to see The Grave Duggar in there tomorrow.
Nine years ago yesterday I got this text from Kokonuts

Well right at the start of the wedding speeches the father of the bride and my boss calls me out in front of about 200 wedding guests for the current score when the Flodgers went up 6-1. My response was Giants up 1-0 in the series. At least at that moment. Good game to miss for a wedding. Now Game 3 first pitch about two hours after takeoff:(
Missed all but first 3 innings. Gaus was rolling, he had retired 10 in a row I think Miller said on radio. At b-ball practice I checked score during water breaks which soon got ugly. Less than sharp before that at start.
Leone isn’t some random guy, he’d been one of the 6 guys in over 50 innings/under 3.00 ERA group. There were guys here calling for him to be 8th or 9th inning guy over Rogers and McGee, before emergence of Doval. That early in game Kap went with who he liked best in that situation, which didn’t work out. Nor did Littell, obviously.
Baserunning gaffe as Giants had rallied off Kelly ended comeback hopes.
Looking at box, Giants RHs not named Posey went 1-17 (Slater double), plus sac fly rbi from Barrels.
But pitching did them in Round 2 to Roberts.
Doesn’t matter what team you are, if you get all 3 elements of low run production, less than stellar starting pitching, and poor relief pitching, you’re probably not going to win the game. All teams suffer that from time to time, it was the Giants’ day for that. Here’s hoping they do what they’ve done all year: bounce back by reversing those 3 elements and take at least 1 of 2 in LA.
To say Gausman was pitching effectively is just not true. He was at 84 pitches and had walked 3 already and gave up a ringing double and some other hard-hit shit. He’s nearly always throwing way too many pitches and usually hits the 100 mark in the 5th inning. He was well on his pace for that.
Batters simply do not swing at the slider in the dirt anymore. They wait for the mistake and whack it, or simply take the walk. Would he have done better than Spaghetti-fuck? Probably, but then again, if he gave up 2-3 runs, the cry would have been to remove him. Frankly I was surprised, just a little, that Kappy didn’t pinch hit for him in the top of the 5th. Sure he had settled down, but again, the pitch count was high, and he was his usual nibbling self.
Plus the inexcusable mistake of letting the pitcher beat you.
Gausman has basically lost whatever it is he had during the first half. Nowhere near as effective. I have little confidence in the outcome when he takes the mound.
We don’t get hammered like that very often. This series is probably going down to the wire and hopefully our bats come alive cause the Stinkin Dogs are gonna be out for blood. We just have to make them STFU and put em to sleep.
We’ll be lucky if it goes down to the wire. The greater likelihood is that the Dodgers run the Giants out of town in 4. They basically have one effective starting pitcher, and he wouldn’t pitch again until a game 5. The Giants needed to win both games at home. As I said yesterday, all LA wanted from the first two games is a split and they got that.
I got no beef with Kap. The Dodgers are the most talented team in baseball and can drop a 9-2 (or worse) on anyone at anytime. We got our hands full with them, which is why I was pulling hard for the Cards in the WC game. Are we in a bad spot now? Hell yes we are, but this team has overcome the odds from day one, so BRING IT ON.
Pen guys haven’t worked in a week either. McGee did have shutdown inning. Wood has been good after an L too.
It’s sad to think that some athletes Are considered elite, pitchers especially. I don’t know what happened from generation to generation, but Juan Marichal 14 years with the Giants, 6 season with 20+ wins. And no pitch count. So most of you are well versed in baseball compared to me. So what happened to baseball pitchers that they can no longer pitch complete games.
For every pitcher going 300 innings back in the day, there were 50 that got used up and tossed away with injuries. The only reason we don’t have 20 game winners much anymore is the advent of the 5 man rotation. Guys used to get 40+ starts a year. Now they only get 30+.
Toughness? I don’t know. There were a lot less teams back in the day as well, so the best and strongest were out there. Nowadays there are better doctors, better nutrition, better drugs, but back in the day these players came off farms. A lot of them were doing hard physical labor and they were strong as fuck. Baseball was a picnic compared to what they were usually doing.
And kids today are taught to focus on one sport. This seems to put undue stress on arms, esp for pitchers. Kids even back to the 70s were playing all kinds of sports and it seemed to help out in keeping players healthier.
Or not. Fuck, I don’t know. Why are 3 49ers out with calf injuries?
That makes some sense about the pitching to me. There are so many [specialized relief pitchers] that I doubt many SP feel the necessity of going the distance.
About the Niners I don’t have a clue but this shit has been happening 4 out of 5 years.
some of those kid pitchers of today are having TJ surgery in high school too. No one knows how to solve problem of pitcher endurance or how to keep them healthy in the pitch count era.
Hahahahaha. That’s pure platinum gold sapphire silver. How the ef did you find that? The glorious subtext to all that is “nine years ago.” It’s a tribute to the longevity and endurance of this blog, for which we bow in gratitude to Magnus collectively like Tibetan monks in saffron robes.
Speaking of religious rites: Bless me, Father, for I have sinned. I packed it in last night in the top of the sixth inning. I was tired and not optimistic. I had had a grand day, though: I sold a bunch of my books, a good sampling of my EIGHTEEN titles, at Octane Social House in Auburn, New York. I was surrounded by friends and love and profits.
Speaking of fathers, happy birthday to Magnus’s dad. It’s like we know you. Well, we do.
Find it? Shit I re-read that text every night before bedtime. Lqtm. It popped up on my Facebook memories
As a few folks here know (by private back-channel communications), the coolest thing happened to me on Friday. I woke up from a nap only to find a text, an email, and a voicemail from Kurt Streeter of the New York Times. What?! He’s a Times sports columnist based in Seattle. It turns out he’s working on a piece about Willie Mays (one not apt to be published soon; figure it out). He somehow learned about CHASING WILLIE MAYS and other digital evidence strewn across cyberspace showing my love for the Say Hey Kid. We talked for about 15 or 20 minutes. It was great. By the oddest of coincidences, he worked earlier in his career at The Advocate, the paper in my hometown, Stamford, Connecticut, the afternoon paper for which my brother and I awaited my father dropping the sports section on a stool; we bolted across the room to grab it. (I am seeing coincidences more as providences, now that I’ve reconnected with Faith after FIFTY years.) Anyway, it was exciting. (I alerted Mr. Streeter to the existence of this venue, this playground.)
Just win one in LA and then they will face Logan.
Now if anyone thinks Roberts isn’t having nightmares about that, you would be wrong….IMO
I wonder if he could go on 3 days if we end up losing tomorrow. For some unknown reason I think we take this series.
I was waiting for that suggestion, Winder.
Surprised it took so long.
I’d say no chance of that happening…
wow. Lance’s second pass is a high hard one miles over receiver’s head and picked off. Accuracy appears to be major issue.
Once again we make way to many mistakes.
There will be a big learning curve for Trey. He’ll be fine. Just a matter of when.
My dad turned 84 today for those who are wondering. Just got off the ph with him, he’s still sharp as a tack even if he can’t play golf anymore
That is good news about your pops. Most of the people i know that age are in the beginning stages of going batshit crazy.
Shanahan is a fucking idiot.
Give pops happy b-day wishes from flap nation!!
Yessiree
I want to be a gif…
nice, i hope he sees this. He always reads the main thread but only gets into the comments some of the time
Bardball put this up immediately today:

Credit is due to Macdog and DJLoo, who gave me permission to steal for the sake of poetic license.
Nice drive, inches short at goal line.
Lance’s receivers sure aren’t helping him out, but what’s with all the wobbly passes?
That’s just how he throws it. Very concerning. Accuracy might be the single most important quality an NFL QB can have. There was reports of this coming out of college.
Being at the game was a blast, until it wasn’t. I hate walking 8 hitter to get to the pitcher. Always have. Go after Pollack, Urias leads off the next inning.
Lance was not D-1 for a reason. I’m not a scout for college, but if 50 D-1 power 5 coaches passed on him they must have seen something. I hope I am very wrong, but 2 guys have similar styles, and one plays at an élite level school playing the best coaches and players D! has to offer. Excels in college championship semi finals against the 2nd best team in college (clemson), you pick THAT guy. Fields may be a bust, Lance may be a star, but I would bet Shanahan got this one wrong. Every pass I saw in preseason was slightly off target. Worse than Jimmy.
Well said.
i wouldn’t be so harsh on him, he needs to develop to play at this level. Totally different game. But he does seem to have all the tools
The NFL is not the place to develop accuracy or good throwing mechanics, you need to have it when you come into the league. His tools consist of exceptional athleticism, which is great, but the NFL is and will always be a pocket passing league. You have to be able to deliver the ball accurately and on time into tight windows from the pocket to win championships. NFL defenses will chew up one dimensional players.
You want to see a good example of such a player, watch Justin Herbert. Big, mobile, accurate, tight mechanics and football savvy. How he was overlooked by so many teams is beyond me.
I don’t pay much attention to NFL anymore.
But, I did listen off/on to this game today on radio, and I see articles on the Niners.
Kittle is out? What’s the deal with all these injuries? Every year, seems like half the main players are hurt for extended periods. The old bromide “next man up” is BS. You can’t win if your big players aren’t playing, that’s why they make the big bucks.
Chuck, what’s the deal?
Also, the Niners are supposed to have such an offense. They seem totally challenged to score…
these dudes are just too fast, too big and too strong. They’re blasting into people, nobody can withstand these impacts over and over. Fucking dudes in the 60s, 70s, 80s even 90s they were small pussies compared to the shit flexing on the field these days.
Kittle is building a reputation for being fragile. Fine player but constantly hurt.
Kittle Brittle is his new nickname for me…
Maybe he can promote a new peanut brittle at the concession stands..
Nice poem pawlie!
Came out great!
“Kingdom of Doubt”
I know it well…
Thanks. We have all been emperors in that kingdom. Empresses? What was the name of the woman here who was a regular circa 2010?
Ferrethead!
Nothing against athletes of today, but game was much more physical many years ago. And more fun to watch without endless delay of replay and a penalty on every punt.
Deacon Jones sig move was to take one step forward and then throw wind up head slap on helmet of O lineman in front of him–totally legal at the time. D Backs could play physically and contest passes without PI and tackling was very physical. It was a rough game with fewer penalties and the physical toll on players very harsh.
Roughing the passer penalty (like lot of others) meant serious foul, not grabbing a guy by the legs.
I feel that it was a way better game between the 60’s- 90’s. Over all it was a little slower than today’s but rarely did you see guys blowing ACL’s and Achilles without getting hammered. It happens all the time now. And today’s refs and commercials pretty much make it impossible to truly enjoy a game.
still was room for plenty of offense and scoring ala Air Coryell and other tremendous offensive skill players and coaches.
What I liked about it was a lot of the players stayed with the same team. The money was not so crazy as it is today. When I was a kid most if not all of the 49er players had jobs when the season ended. A lot of em stayed local and you got to know em pretty good year after year.
John, look at Josh Allen. He came into the league throwing picks all over the place and not being very accurate. He’s now one of the best in the league in 3 years. One game does not define a career. Or a season. The tipped passes are a bit concerning, but some of that goes to the line and not keeping the D linemen busy. Shanahan seems to think he can run Lance 25 times. Ludicrous. Just like dad killed RG IIIs career.
Our O line has become really poor this season. 6 holding calls. 2 famously on one play, on both tackles. Penalties everywhere. Mistakes. This team is sloppy as fuck for being this far in Shanny’s tenure
One of these decades they will figure out how to call PI correctly.
I’m fine with Lance. What else do we have to look forward to? And wtf is up with this weird doghouse Aiyuk is in? We don’t have enough good receivers to be freezing this guy out right now…..
Weird play in the Rays-Sox game.
Like Smoltz, I’ve never seen that in all my years of watching. They need to change the rules.
That ain’t right. The Rays got robbed.
Agree.
And then of course the Red Sox win.
that red sox game was absolutely bonkers
MLB and the networks are sure pleased.
Yankees fans and Red Sox fans tied for first place in the Insufferable League.
they’re both equally the worst.
Insufferable fans are probably ones that never suffered…
Umps have the ability to place the runner home but never do. Afraid of being second guessed. They shold take it away if they will never use it. Rays got hosed.
The shine is off the rose with me on Shanahan. I think we lost SB because of his play calling. I think sometimes it is more about him looking smart then calling a winning game. Rushing Jusczcyk in on 4 & 1 blew that play. A key moment. They are a frustrating team to watch. The aiyuk thing is a mystery.
Shanahan still doesn’t know how to finish a game. I was screaming at the walls to run the ball late in the GB game. He left too much time, and Ryans, of course left the middle of the field open. 2 passes in the middle of the field, no pressure, instant FG. Of course Crosby misses 3 FGs today. And they STILL win. Fuck me.
We are squarely back to the fucking Harbaugh Kappy offense of read-option everyone crowded in the box football. We STILL never go deep until it is late in the 4th and are fighting for our lives. Aiyuk was behind Sanu and Benjamin (WTAF???) today. He made the toughest catch to keep a drive going.
Shanahan is really going south on me. Lynch and the sketchy injury-riddled picks is also fading a bit in my eyes.
It seems like half the players in the White Sox-Astros game are named Garcia.
I think about 20 some years ago, there was a Martinez everywhere…
Now a bizarre play in the Astros-Sox game!
that was just utter bullshit he was running in the grass!
