A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Tough Assignment

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on October 11, 2021

This feels like an upcoming….loss. We don’t hit Scherzer well (besides Craw and Stelly) and everyone of their guys hits Wood well. Whatever, that’s why they play the game though, right?

http://dailybaseballdata.com/cgi-bin/dailyhit.pl

I’d like to hope that Wood might rise up to the challenge and Max might finally start to be slowed a bit by his 37th year on this planet but that might just be wishful thinking.

Slush said Giants record in Wood start after a loss is 12-2. At one point I think they had won 10 in a row.

Just saw the ground rule double play in Sox Tampa game. Unfortunate, but umps didn’t burn them, the ball did. Story on MLB.com had the ump saying it’s in rulebook and there isn’t any “discretion” at all.
Funny that Hunter Refroe, guy Rays acquired in trade from Padres and then let go to free agency, homered in that game, and had 31 this year for Boston. And Christian Arroyo had 3 hits batting 9th and playing 2b.

  3. willedav's avatar willedav said, on October 11, 2021 at 7:41 am

Rays used what 9 pitchers? Boston had the guy who finished go last 4 innings…Giants have someone like that available? I know he has had rough time last couple years but it would be cool if Cueto could have another series to get on mound again for them.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on October 11, 2021 at 7:43 am

Nick Pivetta, who went 4 shutout innings in relief, allowed 3 hits 0 runs with 7 Ks for Boston, and got the W.

I get the feeling Wood is like the sacrificial lamb. Kapler thinks we are going to lose so save DeSclafani for Game 4. So will make missing Game 3 while flying back a little easier to swallow.

That is pretty cool. Funny it was off Luis Patino, one of three players Padres gave up for Blake Snell. Pads fans routinely pan this deal as another example of how Preller trades have decimated their farm system. Thing is he didn’t pitch very well for Rays after struggling for Pads last season. He had ERA of 4.31 and he gave up 12 bombs in 77 innings, and walked over 3 hitters per 9. And now takes the L on walk off to give Sox series lead.

Didn’t Tampa Bay hitters Strikeout 20 times in the game?

Wood has been pretty sharp since he returned from Covid as Kapler was building up
his pitch counts and he’s now at the point to go farther and stretch it out which obviously could
be needed after the BP fell apart Sat night.

As great as Scherzer has been, he has struggled down the stretch with his mechanics so if he’s
off there’s a good chance the Giants can get to him with a good approach and quality AB’s they have
    shown all year.

This is the swing game in the series so it would be great to get this one
and have a chance to rub it in the Dodgers faces with a chance to clinch it
In there house, but even getting one guarantees the trip back to the crazy fan
base of Oracle Park with Webb going game 5 I would like are chances for sure,
and something Roberts definitely wants to avoid! So let’s kick some Dogpile asses tonight Giants!!

  11. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on October 11, 2021 at 9:28 am

I think the Giants have gotten somewhat off their at bat approach to take a ton of pitches in the last few weeks. Can’t say if the stats bear that out. Something has reduced their usual number of HRs…

Well, the peerless Vin Scully too. If the neighborhood kids didn’t pick me as they were choosing sides, I sat on a huge rock with a stick in my hand and “announced” the game.

Cain had the ball in his glove, then his body bounced back off the fence onto the ground. When his glove hand whipped back and hit the dirt, that’s when the ball popped out. Why isn’t that a catch? He wasn’t juggling it in his glove on the way down, it was in control in his glove. The ground can’t cause a fumble in the NFL, but it can in baseball?…

Defense I’d guess, especially with Wood the lefty vs. Dogs RH hitters. I used to think you needed strong LHP to beat them, but without Muncy in there the RHs are more dangerous. Kap hit him 8th Saturday didn’t he? Wonder how many times that has happened to him before.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on October 11, 2021 at 3:42 pm

Exactly. MLBTR has a list of FA CFs, and while Marte is tops of the list, Bryant is up there at 3rd (I think behind A’s Mark Canha). Which as one guy said, tells you how weak the list is.

He just cannot seem to layoff anything around the letters.
Pitchers know not to give him anything around or just below the knees.
If it’s above his belt, he just should have a shock collar that Kap can push the button to stop him from swinging…

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on October 11, 2021 at 5:02 pm

that’s wrong–Cory Seager will be at SS and bat third.
Dodgers btw hit most HRs all year in NL off LHP and were 4th in OPS.

  28. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on October 11, 2021 at 4:57 pm

Longoria at 3rd for the D, though I think Estrada (on roster instead of Dick) would have been about as good there with the glove, and he’d have a few knocks probably. Longo is due for a jack over the next two games — he’s smoked a couple of really long flies lately, just missed the sweet spot…

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on October 11, 2021 at 5:11 pm

Um, Thairo played a total of 4 games there this year for SF, with 5 total chances. He played 3b 6 times for Yankees 2020.
Given all the Dodgers RHs, and the fact that Wood is good at inducing ground balls, there is zero chance Kap is starting anyone beside Longoria at 3b,
and as you say, he’s “due.”.

  29. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on October 11, 2021 at 4:58 pm

Incredible 17 pitch at bat by Austin Meadows of Rays, but end the end the pitcher was even tougher on the full count and struck him out! Kinda cool to watch a battle like that go on, just like Belt’s epic AB (21?)both dugouts and the fans really get into it..

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on October 11, 2021 at 5:16 pm

That violates my proposal that anybody with 2 strikes on them gets 3 more foul strikes, and on the 4th one, you’re out. It would save game time, and stop some of these hitters just spoiling strike after strike after strike. I don’t see much lost to stop an interminable AB, I don’t enjoy them whether it’s Belt or somebody else…

      • djloo27's avatar djloo27 said, on October 11, 2021 at 6:12 pm

        I love that idea.

  30. willedav's avatar willedav said, on October 11, 2021 at 5:33 pm

Longoria seems to have taken place of Denard Span here as most disparaged every day player though Bryant is close second I guess. and yet he’s in Kap’s lineups as long as he’s healthy and those lineups definitely have input from FO. There’s another year left on contract so he’s not going anywhere and it seems that FO and his manager are totally fine with that.
