A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

They Got No Wood

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on October 13, 2021

The cause of our problems has reared it’s ugly head. We have a team OPS of .524. Our gents have niggled out 6 measly walks in 4 games. LA has 15. Yaz, Wade, Ruf and Flores are a combined 1 for 36. Solano, Dick and Duggar can’t even boast better than that, they have zero hits between them. We are back to the “We Score We Win” days without The Reverend to guide us home.

And yet, somehow, we are tied at two games with a chance to knock this terrible group all the way into a deep Winter slumber.

Think about it, we have hit like absolute crap and they still have their backs against the wall.

Just find a way to get this done.

They have their backs against the wall? Sure doesn’t feel like it.

  2. chipower9 said, on October 13, 2021 at 6:44 am

To me, the things you mention about OPS and walks is a prime indicator of why a five game series can be problematic. If your team, or a couple of your key guys scuffle a bit, given the shortness of the series, there is not a lot of time for course correction.

And not sure the bums have their backs against the wall. They probably came out of last nights win feeling pretty damned confident.

We have won 12 against them this year and they 11 (including this series). Both teams know it is an elimination game. I suspect both clubs will leave everything on the field come Thursday.

I do know that we had the resilience to keep them at bay all year, and hope like hell they can do it one more time.

    Go Giants!

  4. willedav said, on October 13, 2021 at 7:25 am

The more things change the more they stay the same….story as always is pitching. Giants had twice shut out LA and only needed 3 hits/1 run to win game before and they shut them out in game 1 too.
Last night, yuk pitching was awful all night.

  5. djloo27 said, on October 13, 2021 at 7:34 am

Well, one game in our home park with our best pitcher to decide the series is still a good spot to be in.
Probably would’ve signed for this going in…

  6. Flavor said, on October 13, 2021 at 7:40 am

more precisely, both teams have their backs against the wall.

  7. Winder said, on October 13, 2021 at 7:56 am

We are either gonna be really happy or really sad. I just hope Webb is young enough to not understand the whole Giants/Dodgers dynamic and just goes out and pitches his game. I think we take these shitheads down.

  8. willedav said, on October 13, 2021 at 8:23 am

Round 4 to Roberts. His “panic move” paid off as Buehler was fine enough for 4+. He inserts the annoying Lux into the lineup for Pollock and he was on base a lot and some of his struggling hitters got going. Kap has lot of struggling hitters that aren’t doing much and got nothing out of pen guys he brought in after Disco had to be removed early.

  9. Flavor said, on October 13, 2021 at 8:45 am

of course this shit was destined to go 5 games……

  10. unca_chuck said, on October 13, 2021 at 8:59 am

Yep. Roberts does get a nod for going with Buehler. I didn’t think it would work.

  11. alleykat69 said, on October 13, 2021 at 9:06 am

I’m sure Robert’s will have a different game plan with his hitters fishing a lot at pitches against Webb, but still he walked “NO ONE “with his 10 K’s so if he stays dialed in like that I like are chances. And ferchrissakes stretch him out he’s the freshest Starter going in the series!!
Gausman probably second man up let’s hope he’s not needed right away with everyone but Disco available. Atleast Doval gets another day off so he will be ready to close this bitch out!!! Giants torturous and resilient!!

  12. sandog said, on October 13, 2021 at 9:28 am

Yeah, our bats are limp, but they are like a freaking all star team that trots out one guy after another with absolutely filthy stuff. Now, we are asking Webb to throw the team on his back for the 3rd start in a row.
He becomes an SF Giant legend in my book if he pulls this off.

    • unca_chuck said, on October 13, 2021 at 9:47 am

Yep. Right up there with Bummie/Cain/Timmy if he pulls this off.

  13. Macdog said, on October 13, 2021 at 10:20 am

The big winner from last night might be the Braves.

    • chipower9 said, on October 13, 2021 at 10:36 am

The Braves look tough. Hope we get to see how tough they are.

Bring the bums head on a platter. Let’s Roll!

    • willedav said, on October 13, 2021 at 10:58 am

And note that hard throwing Hader and Brewers got beat with slider up in zone that Freeman knocked out the yard bottom 8th.

  14. chipower9 said, on October 13, 2021 at 10:38 am

If Webb throws anything like he did in Game 1, and we can get some production from our bats, I like our chances.

Agree if Webb brings us a W, he will be up there with Timmy and Bum with one for the ages.

  15. snarkk said, on October 13, 2021 at 11:25 am

Giants gonna need to score more than 2 to win.
LA has now seen the latest version of Webby, so they are unlikely to swing so much at his slider and changeup. They will work the count more.
Which as BF says in the lede and I’ve been saying, SF in the past weeks has left its MO of taking tons of pitches, drawing walks, then pouncing on the pitch in their target zone. Belt is missed, he got on base and started things…

  16. snarkk said, on October 13, 2021 at 12:01 pm

I’m hearing radio talk of subbing in Gausman early if Webby falters.
    Totally don’t like that.
Gausman has been really wobbly right out of the gate, why put him into that position?…

    • Macdog said, on October 13, 2021 at 12:29 pm

I’d rather see Wood if it comes to that, not the least of which he’s got plenty of experience as a reliever.

      • chipower9 said, on October 13, 2021 at 12:49 pm

Me too, but he would be on some seriously short rest. But that seemed to work for the bums and Buehler.

    • alleykat69 said, on October 13, 2021 at 12:56 pm

Next man up Gausman with the most rest,Kapler used every pitcher but Doval and it won’t be him till the 9th hopefully. Yeah maybe Wood depending on the matchups it’s just Kotter’s belief in Wood over Gausman.
In a perfect world for the Giants, Webb just has another game for the ages to expand his legacy as other Giants greats have done in the playoffs/W/S..

  17. unca_chuck said, on October 13, 2021 at 12:54 pm

Funny, the teams I feared the most in the playoffs, assuming we get past the Dodgers, were the Brewers in the NL and the Rays in the AL. Both are gone.

    Shocked by that.

    • snarkk said, on October 13, 2021 at 2:24 pm

Brewers can’t score much, and their pitching couldn’t hold the Braves bats.
I saw the MLB replay on Freeman’s 8th inning -series winning HR yesterday. Hader threw him a pitch at 84 mph that looked like a cookie slider, thigh high, with a “hit me” sign on it. Terrible pitch…

  18. alleykat69 said, on October 13, 2021 at 1:00 pm

Yeah and to think I have to be aggravated by the completely stupid tomahawk fans in Atlanta. But still well worth it meaning the Giants moved on..

Hate the Braves and their racist chant. Fuck them…hope we get to see them and kick their asses.

I can’t stand it at Arrowhead either, but I don’t hold it against my team…

Multi reed player Pharoah Sanders is 81 today. Really enjoyed early LPs with likes of Leon Thomas Cecil McBee and Roy Haynes. Always an innovator playing with both John and wife Alice Coltrane. 1994 CD tribute to Coltrane of mostly ballads was very well done.

Question–who did the singing first, Florida St or Braves and Chiefs?
Are all of them still doing it–I heard it in ATL. Seminoles are so awful haven’t seen them play this season. Cool unis though, garnet with gold.

    • unca_chuck said, on October 13, 2021 at 2:14 pm

Fla St at least went to the Seminole tribe and got permission to use the warpaint and garb for the mascot.

      • Winder said, on October 13, 2021 at 2:34 pm

      • unca_chuck said, on October 13, 2021 at 2:45 pm

Yeah, don’t remember seeing that either the few games I saw them as the Indians. Plunkett was there when they were still the Indians, right?

      • chipower9 said, on October 13, 2021 at 3:06 pm

I think they had become the Cardinal when Plunkett was there.

      • Winder said, on October 13, 2021 at 4:23 pm

I think it was around the mid 1970’s that they changed.

      • Winder said, on October 13, 2021 at 4:26 pm

I just looked it up. They got rid of the Indian mascot in 1972 but not sure when the name change happened there was some conflicting stuff on that page and my attention span is the shits.

No Chi is was still The Stanford Indians with Jim Plunkett leading the way under a great coach John Ralston!
Plunkett never thought twice about the Indians name being racist as most folks did back then.He took pride in the name.Hell nowadays I wonder if they thought they’re defense named “The Thundering Chickens” was a knock on the poultry industry?

  23. unca_chuck said, on October 13, 2021 at 3:58 pm

Saw a couple games during that 1970 season. Saw Lynn Swann playing for USC as well. Dude was killing it even then.

Another Serra Padre. Class of 1969? His mom was my dentist’s receptionist. She had all kinds of Steeler stuff in the office.

    • Winder said, on October 13, 2021 at 4:31 pm

If I had a smart phone I would download a picture of a Stanford Indian emblem from the 30’s. Maybe when my niece comes over. My dad had a scrapbook with all the Pac 8 team emblems.

  25. alleykat69 said, on October 13, 2021 at 5:00 pm

Stanford Indians and USC Trojans sure had great teams in the Pac 8 in the 70’s
Plunkett winning a Rose Bowl over a heavily favored OSU team 27-17..QB Don Bunce did the same against Michigan 13-12 …While USC QB Pat Haden and Lynn Swann won a National Championship..in 72?
Yeah Winder a PAC 8 emblem would be cool to see!

    • Winder said, on October 13, 2021 at 5:07 pm

The grade school I went to in Menlo Park had discounts for anyone who wanted to go to a home games. It was 25 cents to get into the stadium so from 61-63 I saw a lot of Indian games it was only a 10 minute bike ride to the stadium.

      • alleykat69 said, on October 13, 2021 at 5:27 pm

        Nice Winder good for you!
See a game for a quarter lol 😂

I use to remember this place called Henry’s Hamburgers in the late 60’s

Who knows the burger was probably made out of horse meat but as a kid none of knew the difference..

Key to the game will likely come down to how both teams adjust their approaches to the 2 starters, especially LA adjusting to Webb. As Kat alluded in his 9:06, most of Webb’s “out pitches” in game 1 got the LA hitters to chase his tailing slider. From what I could tell, many of those pitches weren’t strikes, so if LA lays off that pitch, Webb will be forced to come over the plate more often, unless he maintains his ability to disguise that pitch so well that the batters can’t help themselves. Giants hitters also must adjust to Urias, who’s always tough. The coaches seem to have done very well preparing the batters, all season. I’m guessing they were cranking the video machine today…

    • alleykat69 said, on October 13, 2021 at 7:47 pm

      Yes that’s the key P/A,
LA hitters were chasing to many pitches off the plate getting themselves out, but when Webb is pounding the bottom of the strike zone just below the knees it’s hard to layoff when it starts at the belt and just drops dramatically. His pitches dart like crazy,Fastball, cutter, changeup, sinker he’s got them all going, just calm the nerves ( maybe one less Red Bull?) and do what your doing it working!

  31. alleykat69 said, on October 13, 2021 at 7:24 pm
