Derby Day!
If you’re looking for something to take your mind off the Giants sucking I have just the thing for you. I’m going to let my main man The Boney One handle today’s thread because he breaks these plays down as good or better than me:

to me, Chris![]() |
I feel exceptionally confident this year
- Messier, 8-1 ML; If he actually goes off at 8-1 or higher he’s a great bet
- Zandon, 3-1 ML; Heart and wallet want him to win ($16.8k in Derby Future Wager), and he figures to run great, but doesn’t have much early speed and that’s been a huge problem last 12 years
- Cyberknife, 20-1ML; He probably will be 20-1+ and therefore my best longshot pick for underneath in trifecta and Superfecta
- Smile Happy, 20-1 ML; I seriously doubt he will be 20-1, probably more like 14-1, but that’s still great value on a horse with a real chance of winning
- White Abarrio, 10-1 ML; might get 12-1 on him, and if he reproduces his race in Florida Derby here he can definitely win
- Epicenter, 7-2 ML; I think he’ll actually end up as the favorite. Nice horse, but had everything his own way and his wins aren’t as impressive as they might appear. Not a fan, but won’t let him beat me
- Crown Pride, 20-1ML; Japanese horse, would be a massive upset, but Japanese horses are now as good as any in the world, dirt or turf, and it’s inevitable one of them will win the Derby someday at long odds. When they do, I’ll have some $ on them
- __________________________________________________________
For my money the 2 best longshots to hit the board today are Cyberknife and Crown Pride…..
this is the most wide open Derby I can remember in quite some time.

And very wet in KY
it’ll be fine for the big races. That track drains exceptionally well
No love for inexperienced Taiba? Would be cool if 56 yr old Mike Smith could get into money. Prat too.
If Messier and john velasquez win, that does bring the banned elephant back into the room, no?
Not a huge racing guy but love the derby!
My kid just informed me about Hjelle call up. Looked like he had a clean inning.
watching replay looked like Doval left a pitch up where Carlson could handle it. What happened when Yepez doubled–was that off slider or fastball? Well pitched game from both sides and Kap PH with Ruf paid off with 2 rbi single to RF.
Taiba has run 2 races. If he can pull this off he’ll be a super horse
ex-girlfriend Rebecca is ALL OVER the 5 Smile Happy and I’ve watched her score huge in Derby before so he’s on ticket, too
Never in the history of my life have me, the boney one and Rebecca all been on the same long shot
Track is dry. We are good to go, gents!
The Buster tribute is very good. The Giants always do this kind of thing very well.
I would like to see the Giants go ahead and retire his number today.
I like this Messier…
Paul, I’ve seen all of Breaking Bad and all the previous seasons of Better Call Saul, but I’ve never been totally clear on all the details of the plotline involving the rivalry of the Mexican crime lords. But I’m not real good at following complex plot details in those types of TV shows or films. It’s why I never became a fan of the mystery book genre. I know there are a lot of great mystery and detective authors, but I don’t do well keeping straight all that goes on in those kinds of stories. Clues and false clues and all that.
Love Saul…basically inner cartel rivalry all trying to take control from their internal rivals.
One of the speakers was Benji Molina, and he was great. He talked about his friendship with Buster. He was wearing a Giants jersey, and he said “Thanks for the ring” which got a big reaction from the crowd, and asked Buster for a Buster hug, which he got, because “everyone else got one.” And then he pulled out a Sharpie pen and asked Buster to sign his jersey, and of course Buster signed it. It was hilarious and awesome. Benji was a good sport in being there and speaking. It could have been kind of an awkward moment.
Just saw the tail-end. That’s pretty special of Big Titty. He was definitely gracious in his dealing with the upcoming Buster. Plus the Giants got an extra year of contract by bringing Buster up in late May.
Messier is my pick to win besides I have a dog named Meister kind of close..🐴🐶
Wow, Rich Strike strikes it rich!
Buster sure looks healthy and relaxed.
Ok is this Rich Strike totally roided up????? I’ve never seen a winner in a triple crown race so amped up it is biting the shit out of the guide pony…
Holy freaking cow RICH STRIKE a 80/1 shot longest in the race and Biggest upset in Kentucky 🐎 Derby, ever wins the brass ring on an incredible inside burst run to the finish!!
Wow ran down 2 leaders
Saw the race, which was worth watching, heard that fucking old Kentucky sell the slave down the river song too. My Lexington lawyer friends attended — photo of her in her high sprig of flowers hat was ok. Beats the wide brimmers.
2$ across pays out $266.
Former players at the tribute: Molina, Pence, Cain, Torres, Affeldt, Gearrin, Wilson, and probably a couple of others I can’t remember. No Lincecum, unfortunately.
Bochy was there.
Molina, Cain, Affeldt, and Bochy gave nice speeches.
There was a funny tribute to Buster’s acting ability in those Spanish language Giants TV commercials, from director Chris Columbus. which included video clips.
Kruk and Kuip were the MCs of the whole pregame tribute. Some nice video highlights of Buster’s career were shown.
Number 28 was not retired…..yet.
Buster gave a nice, gracious speech.
I hope Gearrin didn’t speak.
Lulz. Yeah, that would have delayed the game beyond belief.
80 to 1 Xoot… Rich Strike gets the last spot in the Derby late Friday after a scratch the story keeps growing..
Claimed for 30K I love the underdog story.Jockey did a great move surging from the inside moving right at the perfect moment and like Willied said
outrunning the 2 top contenders!! Congrats 🎊🎉🍾 to the Underdog!!🐎
thanks. I removed my confused question. I don’t know how Rich Strike (and jockey) moved off the rail and went up between those other two — at that pace.
Already down 1-0. An 80-1 shot has a better chance of winning than the Giants these days.
Rich Strike!
Wilmet!
I don’t think a bot selected this one just now.
Wilmet slam!
That’s for Buster!!!
Mr.ED not horsing around GRANDSLAM!!!!
After Flores whiffed on that slider didn’t think he’d see another fastball.
Wow. Wilmer! how many pitches will this guy have to throw this inning?
Teams throw that high inside pitch to Flores at their own risk.
The incredible run on the rail was something when the Jockey turned Rich Strike’s head to the right and the horse never lost speed as he found that opening, and then Rich Strike just before the end, looked to his right and like his was mocking the favorites that he has this no problem..
Shit. Webby needs to tighten up.
It’s like we don’t know what to do with a lead.
Webb . . . no zip, just one meatball after another.
You get a nice Slam to go up 4-1 and with Webb your thinking looking good, but he hasn’t been looking good and there hitting seeds! Now 4-3 could be a wild one hoping to hold on, cause damm they need this win badly..
I generally don’t like when guests come into the broadcast booth, but Buster did a real good job.
Scoobie doobie Dubon! About time. Maybe the bats are waking up with the return of the big boys. Really not digging Bader’s antics out there in CF.
Dubey lights it up!
Ruf. Ruf. Ruf Ruf. Wake up time.
Ruf, finally!
Doobie’s making his case. OF/IF backup is pretty compelling. Hope he’s studied baserunning.
How many years does it take for Doobie to make a case? He’s out of options but considering he adds value when he’s not braindead he will stick. The obvious was getting rid of Beede on why they took so long to dump him. Still the carousel of changes will be plentiful going forward..
Meanwhile in Pittsburgh, Loo’s Rangers have rallied from 4-1 down after the 1st period to tie it at 4 in the 2nd.
pop ups in the late sun and shadows and wind can be hard to track. Early games, the sun can be a problem, too . . . . And let’s not get into the lights late at night.
Damn, only a sac fly this time from Wilmer.
Maybe Rangers could go in 3 OT’s again and win this one!
Just can’t stand slimy Larry Baer still allowed to chum up with anyone! Especially sitting with Buster who I’m sure would rather be sitting with anyone but him..
Kuminga start didn’t work out so well. Jump stop!
Like group they have in there now. Loon Porter and 3 guards.
These fouls are absolutely bullshit on the Warriors. Bane dives into Poole’s knees and that’s a foul on Poole. Morant trips and falls and that’s a fouls on Wiggins. Kuminga gets hacked on his 1st drive, no call.
Kuminga seemed to attack the rim better early in the season. Hwe has been struggling for a while.
Half court 3 from Ja at buzzer. Fun game both teams can score in spectacular fashion.
Fuck, these relievers suck.
10 days covid off for Littell
The officiating in just about every sport has become ridiculous. Most screens in the NBA are moving screens. But not tonight. Dray gets 2 called on him in the space of 15 seconds that cost the Warriors 5 points.
13 hits allowed and still 2 innings left. Anyone not named Rodon on this staff throws BP, it’ll be a fucking miracle if they hold off the Cards.
Warriors carving them up when they don’t turn ball over. Up 15 now.
And there goes Belt, couldn’t make it through one game.
Yep Belt the injury king of alltime that no player can ever threaten..
Victory!
Yeah it’s been along time , just need Clint to make things right!
All in all a good day for Giants baseball.
Finally a win. Glad it came on Buster day. My son’s friend with him at a bar bet $10 on Rich for fun!. Drinks all around!
Go Dubs. Love the change in strategy avoiding the 3’s and dominating on the inside game!
Exactly. With some patience they can get good shots. Like Van Gundy said, highlight reel of defensive breakdowns for Griz tonight. Mid 3rd GS was shooting 70% from floor, mostly 2s/points in paint. Old School!
Good to see Clint again! When the Flap finally comes to an end Clint will be one of the flaps lasting legacies!
Not a horse racing expert although I went to the track a lot in younger days; that was a whacky race in that as far as I could tell, the guy calling the race didn’t even mention Rich Strike’s name until he bolted past the leaders. It was a big field to keep his eye on all of them, but still, thought that was a bit strange. I guess they thought they didn’t need to watch an 80-1 horse. Fun to figuratively watch his eyes light up when the inside opened up and away he went.
Didn’t watch much after early explosion–what happened to Belt?
“Neck stiffness”?
Crazy. Announcer doesn’t even see him coming.
thanks, saw similar overhead view earlier. Horse was way behind, then lane opened up on rail and he just took off. Check out where he is at 26 second mark and then 31 seconds–still behind lot of horses.
um isn’t today’s Giants game supposed to be another pen game?
Was still behind about 10 horses when he just exploded and eventually ran down Zandon and Epicenter. Joel Rosario and Flavien Prat had 2 horses all set for stretch duel, and then had to settle for 2nd and 3rd.
Yeah, that overhead view is amazing, what a run by that horse.
Belt with yet another injury. Insane.
Yeah Rich Strike proved to be quite the finisher, unlike Belt who doesn’t and comes up lame again..
Looks like Junis is SP today, no Belt vs. RHP Dakota Hudson with Ruf at 1b Dubon at 2b.
Noticed yesterday while SF scored 13, Bart was 0-4 with 2 Ks.
Gonna check how many times he has K’d twice in game so far. Seems to be right over/under number.
Bart is 0 for May, 0-13.
April 30 game Nats won 14-4 he went 3-4.
Before that April 16-26, 0-20.
High OB .533, after first 4 games of season when he 4 hits and 4 BBs.
Now OB is .313 and he has added 5 hits in 44 ABs and 6 BBs.
9 games with 2 Ks, 3 with 3 Ks out of 18 total games played.
He’s just been completely awful and still has that annoying habit of lowering his glove and removing the target during the pitcher’s wind-up. I don’t know how the PS puts up with that. Anyone whose pitched at any level from the gutter on up knows that a good target is important.
From now on I’m calling him Bark.
His name should end with a K like most of his ABs…
WAR, for what it’s worth, shows Bart this season currently at 0.0, and Will Smith of the Dodgers at 0.5.
According to WAR, Smith has been worth half of a win more than Bart so far.
Cards’ Molina is currently at 0.1.
Isn’t WAR cumulative? If Smith continues his level of play, he should be a 3 at season end; Bart, a 0.
Fangraphs:
For position players and starting pitchers, here is a good rule-of-thumb chart:
Scrub 0-1 WAR
Role Player 1-2 WAR
Solid Starter 2-3 WAR
Good Player 3-4 WAR
All-Star 4-5 WAR
Superstar 5-6 WAR
MVP 6+ WAR
Crawford ended with 6.1 last year (bbref WAR).
The question is how long can the Giants stick with a player striking out in fully 50% of his ABs? Not much longer. He has a hitch in his swing that even I can see, and that’s saying a lot. They are saying the right things out of necessity, but maybe it is coming to light why they used another 1st rounder on a catcher!
