Forgettable Loss
Outside of Webb’s solidification of his general studness that was just kind of a “meh” game. The bats don’t have the magic they had in them last year. Losing Posey and Bryant will tend to have that affect. I see a lot of low batting averages up and down the line up. And the bombs we hit with such regularity last season, they are fewer and farer between.
Still, on pace to win 90 and that should be fine to get us into the dance. Another deft mid season pick up by Z (hopefully a bat or two) will have us singing “a song, a real song”, deep into the post season.
Story in MLBTR says Dodgers looking for replacement rental platoon type RH OF while Betts is out.
Um, Giants could use RH OF themselves. Yaz Joc Gonzalez cover LH, with Wade Jr. (and GD) waiting in Sac.
Kap is short RH stick with only Slater out there, which hurts with regression from Ruf and Longoria, among others.
Even with DH he still winds up batting LHs vs. LHP.
Stephen Piscotty’s name bandied about in comments section.
Like the Robert Cray song, Giants need some “New Blood.” Gonzalez and Estrada have been welcome additions–need couple like them up.
Not having Wade has hurt more than losing Bryant.
They miss Barrels too, although he’s yet to play this season for Cincinnati due to a hamstring injury I think I read…
In Ruf’s 2 years with SF the slugging was at .500 and OPS at .900
This year slugging is at .340 and OPS under .700.
He’s not the only one but yikes, what a drop off. 2021 he had an XBH every 8 AB, this year 1 XBH per 15.
As a team Giants are 8th in league for slugging. Just don’t have same pop as last year. And yes Late Night LaMonte was fun part of that.
Not that they have a better option, but sometimes I wonder if they’re trying to hammer Doval into the closer slot.
He hasn’t really taken a step forward this season – maybe even regressed a little…
They have nothing to lose to bring up the RH power bat of Yermin Mercedes I will nickname him Yerminator for now.It worked out pretty damm good with the other Whitesox’s dude Gonzalez so why not? C/1B /DH and why there at it more depth with an always injured infielder in David Villar who just continues to rake in Sac leading the league in bombs&RBI’s damm good player that deserves a shot in the option rotation.
Posey, Wade, Bryant, Barrels….in that order of most missed bats.
In an otherwise frustrating and yucky game last night, the Atlanta ballpark organ player played some “name that tune” for us. I recognized the Beatles’ “The Long and Winding Road” when Longoria came to bat.
Dave Brubeck’s “Take 5” for Yaz, #5. didn’t hear it but one of Ms. Slusser’s twitter buddies noticed it.
Ruf got “How much is that doggie in the window?”
Wilmet got the theme to Mr. Ed.
Gonzalez got “Louie Louie”
That AB at the end, of Craw vs. Jansen, was sad and even pitiful. The first pitch was a fastball down the middle and Craw took it for strike one. What the heck?! And you just knew, and Craw probably knew it, too, the AB was over now. He had taken the best pitch he was going to see, and now it was going to be a bunch of cutters and other junk on the edges of the strike zone.
It was that kind of night for the Giants hitters. Take a good pitch in the middle of the strike zone, and then swing at junk at the edges or even out of the strike zone. Several Giants hitters did that.
Wilmer swinging on a 3-2 slider in the dirt that didn’t even make it to his back foot , *after* taking a 2-2 slider that was perfectly placed down and in by Smith … inexplicable. He had just resisted a far better version of the same pitch … why, why, why???
In the moment even a veteran hitter can’t help themselves being over aggressive, it can certainly be frustrating.Like Craw taking one straight down broadway, then feebly swinging at Jansen’s garbage a foot out side? Only Pederson of the lefties off the bench came thru as both Belt&Craw failed miserably as the matchups were there ,..
Hey Zum: The other day I was listening to song by Cream, “Badge” with some nonsensical lyrics. Convo on you tube, 6 minute Live version performed year or 2 ago at tribute to Ginger Baker with Clapton and Ronnie Wood, centered around George Harrison providing “..our kid now he’s married to Mabel” when song was being worked on. Mabel being nickname for Yoko. Supposedly from a memoir written by George.
also that Ringo was present at time but too drunk to contribute.
?
good article about Yoko Ono in 6/20 issue of the New Yorker by Louis Menand.
Familiar with Ben McGrath? Just read interesting book he wrote “Riverman An American Odyssey” about a man he met just outside of NYC who planned to canoe from there to Florida. He’d traveled from Bozeman Montana to Missouri R and traversed most of Mississippi and parts of Tennessee R as well, mostly on his own.
yeah. I remember enjoying pieces McGrath published about Conant in the NYer.
Disco’s back…
1. Luis Gonzalez (L) RF
2. Mike Yastrzemski (L) CF
3. Evan Longoria (R) 3B
4. Joc Pederson (L) LF
5. Brandon Belt (L) 1B
6. Thairo Estrada (R) 2B
7. Tommy La Stella (L) DH
8. Brandon Crawford (L) SS
9. Austin Wynns (R) C
P: Anthony DeSclafani (R)
I recall Disco getting lit up in Atlanta last season.
As of today Joc Pederson holds down the 3rd outfield spot(over 630,000 votes)for the A/S game trailing only Betts and Acuna jr who are locks. Pederson does have a following, no doubt in baseball ⚾️
The pearls may help, if he stays hot. On opening day, I was surprised to see a family decked out in Giants gear with the very young son also wearing pearls. Joc hadn’t even played a game for us yet.
Guess so since a Pearl was embedded in all the Atlanta Braves W/S massive diamond rings and he only played there a half the season. He has a cult following throughout baseball with fans and players..
yeah, I heard all that on the broadcast last night. I’m just musing about the timing for the Return of the Pearls. First series in Atlanta, well, ok. But . . . .
“The other day I was listening to song by Cream, “Badge” with some nonsensical lyrics.”
I don’t know much about the lyrics, Willie, but I do know the story about the title of the song. The word “badge” is not in the lyrics.
Whenever George would write the word ‘Bridge” on a handwritten lyric sheet, meaning the musical bridge of a song, a change in the music, it looked like the word “Badge.” And Eric Clapton thought it was the word “Badge,” and thought that would be a great title for the song.
In George’s book “I Me Mine,” which has some photos of his handwritten lyrics, when you see the word “Bridge,” it DOES look like “Badge.” It was an easy mistake for Clapton to make.
yeah thanks
The Atlanta pitcher’s moustache doesn’t look real, IMO. I’m sure it’s all real; it just doesn’t look real.
Great first inning for D/S. 7 pitches, K on 94 fastball after GIDP. Gotta be on pitch count so innings like that all to the good.
I couldn’t figure out the music for Estrada or La Stella. It seems like something from the Who’s Tommy would be a natural for La Stella.
Wynns!!!!
THATS A WYNNS Special a 3Run Bomb!!!First as a Giant good time for it!!
LaSpitty soon back to the DL with broken foot the MRI will find.
Room for Villar are Mercedes Benz for a callup?Yerminator is on the 40 man and is yes for an activation roster spot, just sayin.., sadly Villar isn’t for now..
Geez that was a perfect fastball to take by Disco to give up that long bomb 💣
Rake
And DeSclafani hell-bent on squandering his cushion.
in 2nd inning took him 25 pitches to get 2 outs and lead cut in half.
Jocko Homo for Pederson?
One IFer on the left side, 111 mph. That will probably happen a handful times this season across MLB.
DeShaun Watson settles 20 of the 24 cases against him. All 24 cases are repp’ed by the same guy.
I have no idea of his guilt or innocence, but really? Sure seems like some kind of money grab.
Wow. That sucks.
There was like zero chance Disco was going to be any good today.
I was typing that before the bomb, FWIW.
Pull the plug…
meatball.
Did Flem just say “Giants need to get bullpen going?” NOW? yeow
Disco sucks.
Well, he’s gonna get 3 more innings regardless.
3 innings if that even happens should be the end for Disco!
If Kapler let’s him go out for the 4th, he’s beyond a moron..
you look at the Braves LU top to bottom and then ours….it’s just no comparison. Braves started a little slow but this LU is just dominant
These games are important.
The NL WC battle is crazy…
The Disco magic seems to have run it’s course. I was really hoping Matt Boyd could show up mid year and take the baton from one of our shitty starting P’s but that’s not going to happen any time soon. Brad Penny Year?
Boyd had another setback, he might not even pitch this year..
I can’t wait for the return of Junis to this rotation, anybody have a update on him?
He’s been on the 15 day since the 11th. So, hopefully next week. I doubt it though as they said it was a grade 2 hammy strain.
Austin Powers for Austin Wynns.
They blew their load. I suspect zeros to close out the night.
Does the organist play Nowhere Man for La Stella (as he rakes a single to RF)?
Grooovy, baby!
Fuckin Wynns! WTF!
This team is a traveling circus…
that braves organist should play gimme shelter if t-bone disco takes the mound again
Wynnes ties it!
Wynns has something to say about that Chuck. 2 hits towards the cycle( HR&Double)and 4 RBI’s
This name that tune thing is pretty dumb. I Can’t Tell You Why for LaStella? I think. But I hate the fuckin eagles, man.
Safe by a mile…
bad slide, tho. Don’t these guys have photos on the clubhouse walls of Willie Mays and Jackie Robinson sliding into home?
He looks safe.
Umpire standing on the wrong side of the plate, no?
He’s safe. Why didn’t he slide?
Yeah, just like that play at 2nd in Pittsburgh.
Terrible slide but I think Craw made it.Could-of jammed that right shoulder though?
Get a SS ready, Will Wilson anyone?
why the late slide? Throw landed on hop and C had to reach up to get it–go in low and he has to go down to put the tag on. He hardly even slid at all
Crawford playing like something else going on in his head.
Yeah like do I have to play every inning cause we have no reliable SS to back me up?
Crawford made 9 errors all last year.
He already has 9 this year in less than half as many games after ball he threw into dugout couple games ago.
Yeah, what’s the deal? Crawfish seems to be kinda out there on the bases. And now he’s out.
Fuck, Littel.
Fuck you Littel. Everyone knows Acuna is a first pitch hitter. All these guys are.
Bring back Chief Noc-A-Homa…
oh I remember that.
Gad, watching Braves during TBS Superstation era was really hard. Cox lost 106 one year iirc.
93 and 94 first 2 yrs, 1978 and 79. Braves had lost 101 year before that.
I can remember Cox playing 3rd for lousy Yankees in 60’s…
1988 Braves lost 106 under Chuck Tanner and lost 97 couple years in a row under Russ Nixon before Cox came back in 91. went 94-68 and lost WS to Twins.
Flav is right about LU in his 5:22.
Giants are not gonna outslug these guys.
They couldn’t win the low-scoring game either.
lulz
Pitchers giving up a ton of HRs the last few days.
We did get a Who “Tommy” song finally for La Stella from the organist. Pinball Wizard.
“We’re Not Gonna Take It?”
Giants fans would approve of that one for La Stella.
Thairo got “Row, row, row, your boat.” Big stretch on that one.
Pittsburgh sports guy on local news Sunday mangled his name, something like Thah-Irer-Oh.
With the national baseball media right now, MLB is the Yankees, a little bit of Mets, and 28 other teams.
Ok. With Wilmer up the organist played So What, Miles Davis, KoB. So what?
oh, I see, that’s his usual mid AB bs.
I’ve never heard of E-40, which surprises nobody, so I went online to read some of his lyrics.
I’m kind of surprised the team is giving him a bobblehead. If any fans actually protested the bobblehead give-away based on his lyrics, they could probably actually get that bobblehead give-away shut down.
I shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die.
Ice T played a vid clip of himself singing and playing bass on that part of that song after one of his nat’l tv shows. I gained respect for him. My kids like E-40 — the hyphy stuff. But they grew up in Oakland.
There are a dozen guys on this blog more deserving of a bobblehead than E-40 (the big Giant fan).
I’d love to see how he would do on a Giant trivia quiz…
Giants Jeopardy! what a concept. For a million laughs, here’s the final answer.
Final Jeopardy:
According to Jon Miller he was responsible for “the worst baserunning in the history of the game”
I and my family were gathered around in the big bedroom listening to Jon Miller’s RADIO call of that game. My sons still well remember the moment. The usual replays of the gaffe place Miller’s audio call over the video. “He dropped his fastball speed from mid-90s to 92-93 to gain command, and became one of the best Giants post-season pitchers of all time.”
How about that piece of hitting by Wynns!
Now wtf swing from the heels and go after that triple next AB..
Flemming sounded unsure why the Sesame Street theme was being played for Gonzalez. There’s a character named Gonzo on Sesame Street, of course.
Luis got Sesame Street.
Second time I’ve heard Green Onions for a pitching change.
Braves keep trying to give this back.
Gonzo out at plate though.
Bring back Wotus.
Jesus bring back Wotus…
Yaz with a big hit. But we still manage to fuck it up somehow.
Shorto comes up small.
