Snakes Paying Us Back For Last Year

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 12, 2022

I was hanging in there till LLovera Boy took the stage. That band got tired in the 80s

At least Cobb made it through 6 for the second game in a row.

That’s something I guess.

yeah the insurance run that eventually did them in. Last year maybe Ruf walks off Melancon (!) with 2 run bomb. Instead he whiffs on 91 cutter.
Didn’t realize it, but that’s 5 straight losses at home. SF actually closer to AZ in standings than SD.
Bart 0-3 1 K. 2-13 since he returned. Still hitting .155 but maybe making more contact, idk.
Gonzalez has made 16 starts in OF but has more errors (4) than Slater and Yaz combined (3). these guys have 48 starts btw them. He’s a good enough hitter but makes his share of fielding gaffes out there.

Cobb has been mostly good all season. Third killed him, with the 4 hits, 1 walk, and of course, the error. Pfffttt!

Also, 3 hours and 46 minute game . . . Hats off to all who watched.

and K n K et al need to stop whining about a ball would have been HR yada yada like one Belt hit.
How many times in 20 yrs have Giants fans laughed at guys who crushed one into wrong part of the yard and wound up getting ATT’d? Happened to Adam Dunn all the time and pitchers were thankful for it.

Yeah, and next inning Marte blasted ground-rule to C-R that’s probably HR in most parks. Maybe AZ announcers were whining.

Two game winning streak showing some offensive life to back to reality of fairly inept lineup. With Longoria down what is there to lose pursuing Andujar. Add Josh Bell and have the makings of a new offense for next season if you can resign Josh Bell.

huh one year out of long career with dodgers going back to Brooklyn days, then 1963 with Mets/64 with SF.
saw something in NYT yesterday about Red Hook area of Brooklyn, pic of Columbia St. from late 1930s, in story about Italian named Panto (?) who worked on docks there and became labor organizer. Ran afoul of union, at that time led by Albert Anastasia, with predictable results.

HBD to Oakland’s own Paul Silas who turns 79 today. Saw him live during 70s when he came to town with Connie Hawkins and Suns, show not to be missed. Rugged power forward in days when game was lot more physical. Averaged double digit boards 7 years in a row.
At age 35, played all 82 games for Champ Sonics 1978-79 plus 17 more in playoffs. No he didn’t need designated rest day and his team won it all for only time in their history.

“ Didn’t realize it, but that’s 5 straight losses at home.”

Read something from J Stark (Athletic and NYT) about new experiment with shift in Florida State League. No IF allowed in pie shaped diagonal line outward from 2b to edge OF grass in both directions. Minor leagues found just limiting 2 IFs on each side of base did not affect amount of ground balls turned into outs. So they are limiting how close to 2b the IFs can be depending on LH or RH hitter.

Further there is in place a committee of players an ump and owners to go over things. Includes Slater, and Giants Chas. Johnson.

James, that end of series Giants sweep of Dodgers Sunday game my mom, dad, uncle, and 4 cousins went to, cost $600 per seat (3rd row back of home plate). My uncle’s son, whom is quite rich (running shoe warehouses), purchased all the tickets. The only freebies were food and drink – as much as they wanted, although limited to the “regular” park fare, e.g., hot dogs, sausages, hamburgers, garlic fries, beer, etc. No crab sandwiches in other words . . . lol. Anyway, that game by all accounts was a fun one to go to, but it does seem like most of the games are bore fests, particularly the ones that last upwards of 3 hours plus and where, the Giants lose.

Talk this morning on KNBR about this position player as pitcher topic.
It’s going on all over the league on a regular basis.
They’ve gone to DH in both leagues now supposedly because pitchers can’t hit. So, now they make a position player pitch who can’t pitch?
The alleged rationale is that despite 13-14 pitcher pens, they are using the pens so much because starters don’t go more than 5-6 now, any use of a pen pitcher in a blowout in either direction is considered a waste of a pen arm.
This makes absolutely no sense to me for all the reasons we’ve noted above.
It’s just further evidence of the continuing degradation of the game…

  56. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 13, 2022 at 12:10 pm

It gets worse snarkk, as the same article says this is a trend confined to one division (AL East I think) and it is going to encompass all MLB soon. Prepare for the 4 man outfield in the NL West. lmao.

Related to what I posted earlier about starting pitchers going the way of the Dodo bird, this is the definitive article on relief specialists and WHY MLB (owners and GMs) are doing it – MONEY. Specifically, it is much, much cheaper to pay for a relief corps versus starting pitchers. That’s why Atlanta has 13 of them . . . Excerpt:

“The Braves are committed to that model again this year, with 13 relievers making a combined $47.3 million. The Dodgers have also dedicated a substantial percentage of their ridiculous payroll to the bullpen with five relievers making at least $6 million. Seven relievers making at least $3 million each are among the biggest reasons why the Padres have been able to stay afloat with Fernando Tatis Jr., Blake Snell and Mike Clevinger all injured.”

This is what happens when you get a mouthpiece for a commissioner. Nothing but the bottom line is a concern for the owners OR the league.

Teams wonder why attendance is down, and you have shit like this. In 10 years, these huge TV deal will be gone and the game will shrink accordingly.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 13, 2022 at 1:27 pm

Well, from a $ perspective, the “opener” + relievers makes sense. Just remember the Zito contract and you get the idea. Why pay Zito that much to crater for most of those 6 years, when that $126 million could have been spread out among a double digit number of relief pitchers? And, when a relief guy’s arm blows up or he just turns into an ineffective turd and you DFA him (McGoo), the guaranteed money you end up eating is very limited (unless you pay him $64MM for 4, like Melancon). But, IMO this pitching paradigm shift away from starters is just horrible for the game…

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 13, 2022 at 1:33 pm

If they’re going to turn baseball into essentially a 9 or 7 inning parade of relievers, they have to stop the shifts and everything else geared to stopping hits. 7 innings of a parade of 98 mph flamethrowers will result in just more pathetic games of 20+ total Ks, occasional HRs, and putouts at first from mid right field…

Apropos of Flav’s lead, AZ is obviously much improved plus according to fangraphs they have 2nd best farm ranking in NL.

Wow. We can’t beat out 3rd to 2nd to 1st DP and they beat out grounders to 2nd.

    We are sloooooow

      Slow and OLD.
Desperately need an infusion of younger, good, athletic players with futures.
Villar and Gonzales are examples of more needed.
Not AAAA retread placeholders with a hard ceiling…

Well, Villar is 25 and couldn’t run out that DP.

He looks like he can hit, and has a decent glove, so far. Hard to find a big third baseman who can run much. They need somebody to take over for Longo the Invisible, he gone next year. I’ll take a glove and thumper at third over in-line speed…

I guess Long gets to wear this one. Jesus. Get him out..

Is Brebbia next on the DFA list in the pen?
I don’t see what premium, if any, he adds to the equation…

hey man, Kap must be listening though because that’s twice now he’s brought Rogers in early and he’s done fine. This time it was in 3rd inning to bail out Long and he had 2 1/3 hitless innings.

  66. willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 13, 2022 at 2:26 pm

Not that this game is unwinnable, but it is third time in a week where SF is coming off feel good W and they just fall flat, with 1 hit in 5 innings. Just doesn’t feel like team that can run off 6-8 game winning streak.
    and another GIDP.
