Swept Out of LA
I’m disgusted with this team, their manager and the GM. So it’s probably best to just let Stix take this one today….

Flav: Couldn’t sleep, so here’s my take. -Stix
How Low Can they Go?
Getting swept by the LaBumbos in a four-gamer hadn’t happened in over two decades. THAT was an abortion. Complete collapse. Plenty of blame to go around: Atrocious defense. Flailing offense. BBIP from somewhere in the twilight zone. RISP even worse. Team spirit flatlined.
Couple days ago the MLB site featured a photo of a couple of the Dodgers stars gleaming and gloating. Message of the picture? “Ain’t we great?” My take was $$$$$. The Googenheimers are willing to shell out the Shekels like picking up Mookie Betts from a hapless Boston organization (shades of one George Herman Ruth getting sold off by the Boston owner back in the early 20’s because he needed money to fund an opera). Then the free-agent acquisition of Freddy Freeman who had starred for Atlanta. Meanwhile, the Johnson consortium has Zaidi up to his elbows sifting and sorting through the garbage, dumpster-diving on steroids. Baseball’s #1 problem is systemic. Ownership. Half or more of them simply do not care. Giants are front and center in that category. “Money doesn’t talk, it swears”…Dylan.
Looked like Zaidi, Harris, the scouts and evaluators were building up a credible farm system. Well yeah. Richmond, Everett and San Jose are fielding winning teams and with a fair amount of genuine prospects. But when it comes to Sacramento…Ramos and Hjelle. Previous upper management sure got them some doozies. Logan Webb and Austin Slater look to be the only diamonds in a heap of coal. Maybe Duval. Bart even showing signs of life.
Helluva season last year. Led by the brilliant Buster, the Bore Core played out its last hurrah with those up from nowhere 107 wins. Right now my pre-season projection of a 78-82 win-loss projection looked as airy faerie as this year’s supposition. Team spirit is flatlining. Longoria looks like toast and both the infield Brandons are looking somewhat similar to that other “Brandon” in the District of Corruption. No there, there, quoting Gertrude Stein. As for that city’s once vaunted team, now their superstar is up for grabs to the highest bidder. They want a ton and then some…like Harrison, Luciano and +++.
Fuggidaboudit.
A certain #1 curmudgeon here on the Flap would have loudly grumbled “stoopid”. That silly notion must have him spinning like a whirligig from six feet under.
So where do we go from here? Start with our could have had been Dusty Rhodes from the ’54 champs, Darin Ruf. Some contender could sure the hell use an absolutely primo pinch-hitter and occasional DH and even a rare performance on the field. It could require a three team deal if SF is seeking a high-quality reliever. But I think he might just fetch an intriguing second-tier low minors prospect, at least a good contact hitter and defender.
YaZmaTazz: Would Boston like to run out the red carpet for a piece of family nostalgia for a competent right-fielder? Unless the original Evil Empire quickly picks up Benintendi, the Sox might like to sock it to them by bringing home the grandson. Nostalgia still has street-cred in baseball…particularly if the guy has a decent track-record.
There are a lot of Post-Season contenders out there. Surely one of them lusts for a proven product, even if an upcoming free-agent. Rodon could bring in a haul, let’s say a AA starter with considerable promise, plus maybe a high-A reliever who has some chops. If Zaidi and Harris are good bazaar bargainers, maybe they could do even better, should there be a team which has a “win now” philosophy and figures they can spare the cash before F.A. status kicks in.
Would Atlanta experience a considerable eJoculation to get their storied Post-Season slugger back? There would be an offer, perhaps one SF couldn’t refuse.
Yeah, it’s re-build time. Gather up some replacements. Bring in a few of the kids from off the farm. R.J. Dabovich looks to be one helluva reliever. Doing just fine in Richmond after starring in Eugene. He’s young, but could be ready to at least get his feet wet by exposure to The Show. A few quality appearances and he could turn into a fixture. Our bullpen has turned into shit. But that shit is well dried. Maybe needs a spark.
Now as for management on the field. We sure could use a Casey Stengel, who committed a lot of magic from bursts of intuition. Or John J. McGraw, much more of a Giants heritage than Stengel. Seems like almost all the Flappers are getting pretty leerry of Kap on the head. Too much mix and match on the basis of L-R stats. I’m sure both Pederson and Belt are seething about the disrespect. Would appear that juggled lineups and a mishmash of relief roles has got the whole squad in a tailspin. Giants should have won at least one of those four in LaLaLand. Some of that flailing and failing on the field could be resultant from a vibe of uncertainty. Ballplayers are conservative types when it comes to roles and positioning in the lineup. This season there’s been waaay too much of that.
My expectation is walking papers handed out by October…if not sooner, should upper management be well attuned to the attitudes of not only the guys on the team, but also to the fan-base.

Reading around other blogs etc., natives are sure restless, and Kap and Z come in for lot of heat. If things didn’t get any better and SF wound up around .500 at end of season, would heads roll? Can’t see them selling while 2 games out (1 in loss column) of WC with 67 to go, but youneverknow.
they don’t really have anything to sell. Maybe Yaz to the Red Sox? That’s about the only one I can see happening.
Yaz, Rodon, Joc, Wilbur, maybe even Ruf like Stix said. But all we’ll get are mid-level prospects. Maybe a pen arm or 2.
Point is they are sticking to the plan they had before last season’s improbability. Build the farm, wait for their prospects.
So, we are not gonna do much next year and we will likely field a 95 loss team.
Yeah, I don’t see any quick fixes here. Usually play like this starts at the top and my guess is that is exactly what’s happening. I don’t understand what Kap has been doing but he has to take a lot of responsibility for it. Last years spark is gone and doesn’t look like it’s coming back. Once again it’s get rid of the dead weight but if we do that and start to bring up the kids now it will start their professional clock and means we will have to pay em sooner than we wanted to with probably disastrous results. We have a real conundrum.
Didn’t they change that start clock bs with the new labor agreement???
IDK
Here is one reliever I loved with the Cubs that should be available. Carl Edwards now with the Gnats. I always loved his east motion and he has a good season and not over pitched. I am done with Rogers. Edwards better set-up guy for the 8th.
I really have a hard time seeing us in the mix for Soto and frankly will be surprised Gnats will move him while they are likely selling the team. If I were an incoming owner and know that Soto will not sign an extension (or course maybe new ownership goes hog wild), I would want my guys new team execs in control of that potential trade while Soto has two guaranteed years left. Oh this Giants team is so depressing.
while Giants may not have lot to sell beside Rodon, this is where Z does his best work–picking up guys on cheap that help the team. Solano Flores Yaz Estrada Gonzalez all above average players he got for nothing, and some pitching too. Last year he traded AA prospect pitcher for Bryant which seemed good move at time.
SF is week removed from winning 7 of 9 and taking 3 of 4 from Brewers. Sure Dogs whipped them but they whip everyone lately, and Giants were in all of those games, most of them decided by pen and D meltdowns in 7th 8th 9th.
Even though I hate Johnson, I’m still not convinced that ownership is stopping Zaidi from signing big dollar contracts, maybe long-term contracts but I still think Zaidi has been under their budget $s. I think the tell will be what Zaidi does now, and in the offseason as he heads into the final year of his contract. Fill holes with big dollar free agents and I’d say that Zaidi has been the thrifty one all these years, but if he continues to collect prospects and waiver wire projects, then I guess that would suggest it has been ownership’s plan to mimic the A’s.
I agree, it’s not clear Zaidi’s being limited. I just don’t think there was a player available last year who didn’t play SS or 1B whom he felt would make the team significantly better and be worth the risk.
We talked about this shit before last season ever started. They are waiting for Farhan’s picks to come up through the system. Then they make moves. Next year will be worse. But at least Belt and Longo, and maybe even Crawdad retires, And La Stella either recovers or gets cut. Last year’s anomaly was just that. An anomaly of epic proportions. All the sore core is back to 2019 numbers. 2023 will be all about the last hurrah of the Sabevans draft picks. The OF will be a patchwork quilt of turds and castoffs, much like this year.
Crawfish was out of shape in 2019, and he sure looks a little porky this season. Last year? His contract year? He was in better shape. Belt and Longo are Belt and Longo. 10 seconds away from a pulled hammy, broken eyelid, or torn oblique.
Hindsight being what it is, sure we could have gone after Freeman last year. But the outcry around Belt and the past, something Larry REALLY sells hard with this team, would have been huge. Now? Now that he’s hurt again, the non-casual fans are back to bitching about his Crystal Todd-ness. He’s gonna have another season with 12 home runs, and 120 days on the IR. Longo prolly doesn’t make it to mid- August before he retires. Wasn’t it Marquis Grissom who simply walked off the field one hot August day and hung up his cleats?
Anyhow, send Joc back to the Braves. Yaz likely stays. Boston is on the edge of contending, much like us, they might take a shot. Too bad he’s not a rightie. Rodon can go to Toronto with Gasman. Wilmet can go back to his namesake. Either get picks or beef up the relief corps.
No chance Crawford walks away from $15M.
He could be a good leader for the kiddie corps I’d like to see…
He’s got a flock of kids. Maybe he wants to send time with them. Posey walked away from his $20 mill or whatever it was.
I’m not sure which Zaidi pick I’m supposed to be holding my breath for? Bishop’s numbers at high A Eugene look good, Patrick Bailey and Vaun Brown, not so much. I’m not sold that the $12.7 million dollar pick (we ate Cozart’s salary to get him), Will Wilson, will be anything more than a guy off the bench.
So far it seems to me that Zaidi’s best asset has been at trading for under the radar guys, but I’m not sold that gets us another trophy. It’s time to pay to play.
No way on earth would Feeeman ever sign with us over SmelLA…
With Duvall going down for the year I wonder if the Braves would be interested in Ruf?
How about a slightly used Mercedes?
I kid, I kid.
I don’t know. We all know none of this shit is gonna happen and we will be low-level buyers. Maybe we dump Ramos for a reliever. He’s treading water at this point.
I’ll give up when they are under 500 and more than 4 games behind in the WC. They have a very good rotation. The distaste for Kapler among most here doesn’t change the fact that the platooning has generated pretty good offensive production, especially considering how little Belt, Longoria, Crawford, LaStella, and Wade have contributed, the huge drop off from Posey to Bart, and Yaz’s subpar performance against lefties. If they don’t drop out of it in the next week or two, still hope they can pick up a couple of useful players for this year and next.
Repeating myself, but that’s what we do ….
Baggs brought up loss of Posey again…clubhouse leader, capable of being fiery when needed, and positive influence on pitching staff as opposed to inexperienced Bart as Giants continue to be without Casali. Giants losses to LA mostly revolved around late game rallies by Dogs off SF pen guys Leone Long Garcia and Rogers. could a vet C have gotten more out of the guys on mound that were struggling? I think it’s a fair point.
Yaz btw was unavailable yesterday and last I heard questionable for AZ games too, after pulling up when he ran into wall chasing foul ball Friday.
I think James is right in 12:10, that Z didn’t see long term value or roster fit in big money FAs this past off season, other than maybe Suzuki. Not too many of the ones that did sign big deals have stood out this year. Lot of long term/big $$ commitments–wasn’t this what SF was trying to get out of?
I think everyone – fans, management, ownership – is fine with long term deals for top flight players who are likely to give the team several productive years and complement other talent that’s good enough to make the team a contender.
The winter of ’92 looks real good right now.
Yeah, that was an ok move.
Chuck have a right re Farhan. When he first got here he was not that gung ho about either Stanton or Ohtani and those were moves Baer was pushing. Same with Bryce Harper the following year. Farhan wants to do it his way re Moneyball analytic versus old school baseball front offices trying to bring in big names. Big names do put butts in seats. But he has to prove his way works and last year’s his over-performances still raises some suspicions in my mind about some performance enhancers. If this is what we get next year, then I will be half out half in in spending my time on the Gigantes…
Word from Rosenthal is we are going for Ramon Lauerano of the A’s to shore up the OF defense.
For La Stella!!! Do it now!!
do you think the a’s would pay LaStella’s $11.5 million salary next year? All but one of the players on their team makes less than that — substantially less. (Elvis is the exception.) Dumping LaStella would be a masterstroke, though — toss in Longo, maybe get an ace, huh?
Offer to pay some of the salary?
pulled up list from MLBTR 21-22 FAs. Hindsight being 20 20, who on this list stands out now? Not even including Corey Seager and Marcus Semien or other SS Trevor Story Carlos Correa:
Kris Bryant
Nick Castellanos
Starling Marte* only one imo that might have been a miss
Eddie Rosario
Kyle Schwarber
Jorge Soler
There is no way in hell the A’s would trade Laureano for a cripple in LaStella it has to be a April Fools joke..
Besides the A’s don’t trade with the Giants as everyone here has said. But yeah Laureano would be a great add, great arm, true CF, and RH power desperately needed.
Still would like another RH bat in play anywhere infielder, corner outfielder, Brandon Drury from the Reds and kick the tires and find out about their reliever Mahle and SP Castillo as well..
James just curious if you know how many runs has Rodgers given up in the 30 innings so called he wasn’t scored upon because the runs were charged to other relievers after he gave up the hits??
Kat, he’s allowed 6 of 11 inherited runners to score. Five of those runs came in three games where he was also charged with a run. So, he’s allowed an inherited runner to score in only one of those 30 games. He has been very efficient with his shittiness.
He’s allowed 6 of 11. The fact that he was charged with a run as well doesn’t take away from that 6 total. It means he allowed his own runners to score as well after the inherited runner scored.
If he inherits a 2-on situation and gives up a home run, 2 inherited runners score. He gives up 1 run of his own. Why would that take away from the inherited runners? More than half his inherited runners scored. And that number of inherited runners seems very very low. But I can’t find the stats anyway so fuck it.
What am I missing here?
https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/gl.fcgi?id=rogerty01&t=p&year=2022
Basically, when he’s been scored on, he’s mixed in a few very bad and one ridiculously bad inning, which has destroyed his stat line. But he hasn’t had nearly as many lousy outings as you and others perceive.
Paul Sorvino joins Ray Liotta and James Caan in movie gangster heaven…
I was wondering what was taking you so long.
Ok I’ll try a trade with the A’s Giants acquire Catcher Murphy& Pitcher Montas
for Bart ( needs a fresh start)Ramos&Rodgers thoughts?
We ain’t trading Bart. Ludicrous as the La Stella for Laureano trade sounds, it came from Rosenthal.
Would the A’s want La Stella even if the Giants paid all his salary? The guy can’t get out of the trainer’s room…
No they don’t want him do they even have a trainers room anymore?
Pee wee Herman Rosenthal is far from a reliable rumor source imo he should be put in a straight jacket and gagged like most supposed experts, just throwing out shit hoping something sticks on the wall..
until I see the A’s trade with the Giants i will be 100% certain that the A’s will never trade with the Giants.
Last one on the ML level was Ernie Riles for Darren Lewis in 1990…
and that was back before we got our staduim and when they didn’t hate us. Kaval hates the Giants. Beane does too. Assuming Fisher does as well. No chance we trade with them with those idiots in charge
Yaz dealing with a calf strain! Figures they can’t even keep possible trade candidates healthy before the deadline..
Slush said LaStella is in clubhouse and ready to be activated and play 2b. Crawford needs another day or two and won’t be back on roster when he is eligible Tuesday according to Kap. Said Yaz “will do some pregame work today to test his sore calf.”
I’ve been reading a book about Churchill and Orwell. Fun fact: during WWII, Orwell lived in an apartment that was about three blocks away from the Abbey Road studio where the Beatles would later record so many things.
Orwell wasn’t able to serve as a soldier in WWII because he had very serious health issues with his lungs. He had a desk job serving the military.
He had mixed feelings about the U.S. Especially during WWII and afterwards, when it became clear the British were going to lose their worldwide empire, and not be a top world-power anymore.
I can read his quotes all day…
Few books in the English language open as brilliantly as Homage to Catalonia.
I’m planning to read that eventually.
No collision at homeplate. Does anyone really miss those? Bart’s season, and possibly career, could have been ended right there, in the old days.
By rule, there are times when the runner can still run into the catcher. That situation right there was a little in the gray area. Bart didn’t quite have the ball yet, but the throw was taking him into the baseline. It was close to a situation where the D-Backs could have complained about illegal blocking of the plate. You can’t block the plate without the ball, unless the throw is taking the catcher into the runner’s path. But the catchers are good now about using their footwork to make the throw take them into the runner’s path.
If the catcher is blocking the plate, and has the ball, the runner can slam into the catcher. It’s still allowed, although some of the players don’t seem to know that, possibly. Or they’d just rather not. And why should they? Hey get that run, but put yourself out for a couple of months.
Nice!! Junis looking good.
Flemming got pretty excited when the Giants turned a routine double-play. Hey, we don’t take that for granted.
Carstie hit it out of the park with exception of Betts reference. Bosox over .500 in 2019, and only 1 year removed from a WS title. They moved him because they didn’t want to pay him. Guessing in hindsight they regret that, but moribund they were not:) Go Giants!
I could have done without his “Brandon” reference.
lol, that was pretty tame for a Stix comment
Hah! Yep.
Bernie’s still kicking it.
Rosenthal works out? Maybe Edwards. Dump Rogers. Trade for Soler.
E – 8 but he won’t get it. Come on Slater. WTF? Jumping at shadows out there.
I really hope we don’t get no-hit.
Or no-hitted, if that’s the correct form of the word.
No-hittered. . .
No-hitterized.
No shittered.
So the good news tonight is that through 4, defensive fuckups haven’t cost us runs.
Heading that way Zumie. Kelly is on tonight..
Oh yay, another four-game series with the Dodgers coming up next week.
We swept ’em before, we can sweep them again.
I like the positivity.
Well, every time i think they are gonna shit the bed, they come back. Did Junis reinjure himself or are they just being cautious?
Cautious. Working his pitch count up.
I’ve always liked Kelly but this is embarrassing. At what point does someone stand up in the clubhouse and say “Fuck this shit.” It certainly isn’t going to be Gabe and his shaven forearms. The shaven forearms didn’t really bother me till we started playing like shit but right now they’ve got me doing a slow ass burn…..
Then again . . . Garcia is looking horrible these days.
I don’t understand why they took out Junis, was he on a pitch count?
Yes
Damn, he looked like he was in control and cruising along.
Jesus. BP sliders for all!!!
Garcia and Rogers need to catch the bus to Palookaville. This pen is is a clusterfuck nightmare.
It was automatic that Kapler would screw that move up.
Junis still was pitching well, and should of continued, screw whatever pitch count he was supposed to be on, it was low still. And of course Garcia blows up not getting any of his 3 guys out..
They should have let Junis finish the inning, ffs.
Next to the defense, the bullpen has been such a disappointment.
Trace Thompson just cranked out a bomb in case anyone thought he’s just doing this shit to the Giants these days.
It’s a problem how the Dodgers have a knack for improving their players.
Klay Thompson could hit a HR vs the Nats.
Churchill once said: “When you’re going through hell, keep going.”
and Hunter Thompson said, “When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro!”
We need more weirdos
Mr. Churchill, you are drunk! And you, madam, are ugly, but in the morning I shall be sober. Only good thing Churchill ever said, and it’s probably apocryphal.
But Hunter. Endless supply. “On some nights I still believe that a car with the gas needle on empty can run about fifty more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio.”
Slater and Bart 2 more errors not given. Are scorekeeper just showing sympathy for this sorry bunch?
Hey! A hit! Gonzo looking like Reuben Sierra out there.
Streameast is working though. Only have the AZ feed tho.
Gonzo on Gonzo. Bart out already?
Wow. That didn’t work out well.
I think we’ve fully established that Villar is really slow.
Nothing changes that fhats for sure as Gonzalez gets doubled off..
Hmm getting streameast with ads. That’s never happened before.
A TOOTBLAN.
Defined as “Thrown Out On The Bases Like A Nincompoop.”
TANSTAAFL
Ballgame!!!
For you Heinlein fans . . .
Ballgame! Yeah are lefty BP guys suck! And Kap sticks with Long wtf?
I said at the all star break that these 13 games would determine buying or selling. If we go 0-13 well, we’ll be way out.
This pen is fucking God awful horseshit monkeypox garbage.
As golden as all the moves were last year, this year is the polar opposite.
I’ve asked 4 Met fans if they’d like to have Wilmet back and they all get very excited about the idea…
The ones I’ve asked shrugged their shoulders.
What’s wrong with them?
Slater is a fucking glue head all of a sudden. No chance to get the run at home so he air mails the cut off man.
Baggs said, “someone needs to introduce Austin Slater to the cutoff man.”
Why is Wynns suddenly in the game? And Wynns threw to the wrong base. LULZ!!!!
Yaz pinch hit for Bart and hit into a double play.
Ah, the ol’ early PH.
Yep. The worm is turning on me for Kapler. I think he gets one more year as the team shits the bed next year and they can him for the majors first Robo-manager.
The Hal Lanier 9000.
Kap got off to a bad start for me this season when he defended a Giants player stealing when the team was ahead 9-0 or something like that. It was cheeseball.
Wow. Wynns under replacement with the doof of his own.
What in the wide world of sports was he thinking?
Pederson watching the grass grow.
And the bunt!!!
Guess I’ll stay up a little longer to see some of Santos.
This entire team has brain fog, but no Covid to blame for it …
Giants have become the Wordle pre-game show…
This is our PED guy? Santos?
We may be slow afoot but at least we are losing fast.
Oh boy. 3 hits and 2 of them bunts. If this was the 70s, there’d be some action happening soon.
Good idea to get picked off first when you’re down 5 in the 8th.
Hit the hotel sooner, extend the hooker visit…
Another TOOTBLAN.
OK, it’s pretty embarrassing for a team with this many coaches to be playing so badly.
absolutely. We got completely bamboozled by that shit last year. We got sold, as they say, a bill of goods.
Kind of shit that gets guys fired.
not talking about the hitting coach either.
short term, they’ll hire more coaches. And coders.
What a shit show. It’s embarrassing enough down 5 and bunt, which I’m sure pissed Kelly off.And good for him to pickoff Gonzalez to bring more embarrassing moment for him and dipshit 1st base coach Richardson..
What’s all that whistling in the crowd there?
99 pitches through 8 and they won’t let Kelly finish off this sadsack Giants squad for a shutout ?
Unless he’s hurt, that is lame-ass, and another example of why baseball is sliding towards suckage…
Nothing surprises me anymore.
When will MLB come to San Francisco?
When LA comes into town in the next homestand…
