Raized In Arizona
Giants took “a lazy Sunday afternoon” too literally yesterday. That was boring. They are now a half game off…..last place. I know he just returned but Crawford can only tote around this .162 BA for so long.
Is not being good enough worse than boring? Or is that the exact same thing?
I think this AZ series confirmed the Giants are exactly who we thought they would be…no Dubs to keep us engaged Niners months away will make this a king summer, but we got golf this week.
Long summer
Sucked they couldn’t touch the kid SP with his ERA of 12 something coming in yesterday. Only hit he gave up in 5 innings was Conforto HR. 0-4 with 3 Ks from Schmitt but looked good at 3b. Webb deserved better fate after escaping the first. Gurriel got his revenge for bases loaded GIDP.
View from LA (good overview and he offers some sharp rivalry-rousing jabs, too):
https://www.latimes.com/sports/story/2023-05-11/san-francisco-giants-attendance-bay-area-oakland-as-vegas
thanks and at least he does mention the 3 rings from last decade, triple what LA has since 1988. At least he’s not the super annoying Bill Plaschke. Dogs fans of course feeling good after sweeping Padres this weekend.
81 and 2020 weren’t ring worthy
Thanks for sharing Xoot. As you indicated, the writer described the situation accurately, but the Dodger BS or jabs were unnecessary (but expected I guess).
Great link thanks.
Declining attendance is natural when the product is in decline.
Who wants to continue paying thousands for a full or part season ticket when you can’t even remember who the outfielders are from week to week? Farhan eventually will have to pay the piper with his job if butts are not in the seats. His plan better start working soon, and draft picks start making themselves known as real MLB players. Oh, and continual .500 seasons isn’t going to cut it, even with Giants fans. The bloom of the ballpark is well off the rose, 20+ years in. The product on the field has to improve…
Yeah, the Rivercats will outdraw the Giants and A’s combined.
woo hoo-zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
. . . moved to Babylonia . . .
King Tut.
I nearly died laughing seeing this on SNL.
Another link worth a look. I forgot the River Cats are playing with the computer umps.
If they bring computer ball/strikes to MLB, that takes away a good % of Kruk’s bullshit schtick about every umpire’s “zone” before and during the game, and also Flemm’s regular rips of the plate umps. I could do with less talk about ball/strike calls. Whatever the computer “zone” is, at least the idea is that it will be consistent from game to game. Overall, I think that is better for the game that one guy calling a strike 4 inches below the knees, and the other guy won’t calling one as low as the knee — or the same ump doing that at different times of the same game and for different pitchers…
I get the daily Twitter feed from this site, all of the previous day’s games in an east to scroll column. I often pause to check the Giants game I watched. “Perfect” and near perfect games have occurred. But it’s rare. Most look more like this, although at least this guy was fairly consistently wrong.
I remember that ninth inning pitch to Sabol. Not what you want that late in a close game.
That was a good 8″ wide. Terrible call.
Ha! That chart shows it 6, 7 inches wide, at most.
K or K said it missed by like 8 inches, which looked like an exaggeration to me.
But that CF camera ain’t dead center either…
Well one thing for sure, the computer ump would’ve ordered Eddings to call it a ball.
I read somewhere that they ditched the tech that tried to create a virtual 3D prism of the zone hovering over home plate for something more simple, flatter. I hope that’s wrong. One of the most beautiful things in baseball is the pitch, whether an 80 mph curve or a 100 mph two seamer, that breaks late enough to catch the very back of the corner.
I think in Harrison’s case at Sac they play 6 games a week, and 3 are with regular umps and 3 aren’t. From what I read robo ones have tighter zone especially for high pitches. Still, Harrison has walked lot of batters so far, 24 in 23 innings with WHIP of 1.59. Only given up 13 hits, average against .160.
WTF is with these 6:40 start times?
They want everybody out by 9:00?
Hey, I’m not complaining.
lqtm
Joc to IL, Yaz back from IL.
Oh cool they showed Frank Robinson of 1961 Reds (and later O’s) as 2 time MVP winner.
That Reds team, with him and Vada Pinson in OF one of my favorites of all time. Robby had slash line of .323/.406/.611 with 37 HRs/124 rbis in 153 games. And more walks than Ks.
He was even better in 1962…
Conforto reaches the Mendoza line…
There are surface coatings, paints, sputtered plastics, fucking oxides, that can neutralize glare. Wtf don’t the Giants use some matte version of such a thing on the hitter’s backdrop in CF?
The game is somehow blacked out on my MLB.TV account even though I’m in New York market, but I did get to see Belt make the final out in the Jays’ loss to Yanks.
frozen by heat
on the black
again ?
Nope, groundout to first.
Well, good for him.
Crawford falters.
Do any of you think the vendor guys that sell the plastic covered cotton Candy even sell any? Plus Cotton candy can last up to 2-3 weeks wrapped. So are you getting your kid some that someone might be packing around that long before replacing it?Yes I’m bored 🥱 waiting for some Giants offense..
Any other Mets on the block?
Could be Loo. Nats drubbed them today, scoring in every inning except 2nd for 10-3 W and split of series.
Confort-oppo!
Man cool inning. Hits with RISP!
That’s the offense I’m looking for, lots of big hits and a sweet 3 run bomb for Conforto!
Just catching up here. WTF?? 2 drops in a row by the phucked up Phils??
Philly did get a forceout at 2nd on the second one, Miller kinda ripped Estrada’s baserunning on the play.
Huh? You can’t play that like it’ll get dropped. It was a can of corn.
Miller said Estrada went back to 1st to tag. I dunno, didn’t see it.
The bases were loaded. Estrada had nowhere to go.
Hoooooo doggies!!! Confortofied!
Look at these fuckers going oppo.
This Schmitt kid looks like a dude.
Giants have hit 20 more HRs than Phils 63-43.
3rd NL behind LA and Atl.
saw on MLBTR Braves signed Dereck Rodriguez to minor league deal. Oy one season wonder.
Kinda of BS Kapler wouldn’t let Wood get a chance for a win..
Well, Wood’s coming off injury so I can see why they don’t push it. 6 more pitches though . . .
A normal start by someone other than Webb, Disco, or Cobb. Not great, but ok. Amazing.
Hit the ball where it’s pitched.
The mantra of my LL coach…
Schmitt is on it.
Yikes that was a rookie mistake by Schmitt right there..
I think fundamentals went out with huckapoo shirts…
Schmitt wisely avoiding a potential injury at third.
Ha! The kid has such great instincts.
How does Krukow know that Schmitt will never make that mistake again?
Exactly,Krukow just rambles on with no rhyme are reason a lot..
Junis is the next shit reliever. He’s going down the tube.
Poor Kuip.
0 for 2 on pronouncing Sosa…
I’m worry about him pronouncing Haniger.
Funny!!!
Had Lourdes Gurriel Jr. name wrong all weekend.
Kept saying, “Lour-dees” and put accent on second syllable.
Is the d nearly a th? I’ve known latinas with that name.
Rogers, Manaea, and Stripling have each averaged under 3 BBs per 9 innings over their careers. They have 35 in 67 innings this year.
So what’s that 5 1/2? I’m guesstimating.
Wow. That was 8″ wide.
Bart is 3 for his last 29…
Bryce Johnson has hologram written all over him…
This reliever corps is sooooooo shakey.
Bart makes Belt look like Superman instead of gumby.
Kody Clemens…. sheesh, I remember when he was born. That was my last year in Boston before moving to SF. I feel old enough as it is, that doesn’t help… .
Great grab!
Phuck yeah! Still in 4th!
Love the door close! Go Giants!
“He was even better in 1962…” said Loo of Frank Robinson. Yes Loo is on it, as he upped slash line to .342/.421/.624 with 51 doubles 39 HRs 136 rbis. Reds won 98 games and finished 3rd behind LA and SF, and Wills got MVP with his 104 steals .720 OPS and 36 errors at SS over Mays and Tommy Davis with Robby 4th.
Kudos to BF for the clever pun in the title of the main post.
Raising Arizona is one of many great Coen Brother movies.
I just watched that movie a month ago. Forgot all about Tex Cobb’s role. Great great stuff.
After taking 3 in a row from Giants, AZ in town to clean up on the A’s.
Props to Conforto but that HR to opposite field corner smacks of puro Manfred juiced ball bomb. Lot of runs scored in other games too yesterday (96 in 8 games), including 18 by Cards, Atl with 12, Mets and Seattle with 10 each and 2 different 9-8 games.
Giants are 4th in all baseball in HRs. Still hard to believe.
There have been other teams like the 2023 Giants over the years, as you’ve noted before. Lots of HRs, but average OPS. Unless a team’s very lucky, middle of the pack OPS = similar rank in runs scored. https://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/MIN/2021.shtml
It’s not complicated. HRs are great, but if you don’t get on base with singles and walks at a sufficient clip, you’re not going to be a top run scoring team.
Yes. Great thing about 2021–Giants led league in HRs but also 2nd NL for BA BB Hits and Runs, 3rd OB.
that Twins team you linked too, oy. Hit 228 bombs, gave up 239 with team ERA 4.83, 14th AL.
Where is Flav?
I think the pen is a bigger issue. So many blown leads.
Bullpen the worst in NL. A’s territory
Wasn’t apportioning blame. The team ERA is also middle of the pack, so it’s been a few really rotten apples on both sides of the ball that have so far dragged the collective stats down and ruined what might otherwise be a competitive season (injuries have been a bigger factor on the offensive side). The bullpen has not been good, but Stripling and Manaea have made themselves unplayable. Between the two of them, they’re 2-8 with 17 bombs and 25 walks in 55 innings. Mediocre, below average play is one thing ….
One bad apple don’t spoil the whole bunch…
-Michael Jackson
They’ve both been shit from the get-go. Which is infuriating when they get trotted out like 2 days ago and Stripshit coughs up an early 3 run lead.
Your bluntness is awesome.
Visit me!
Giants promoted 21 yr old CF Luis Matos to Sac from Richmond. In 115 ABs slash line .304/.398/.443 for .841 OPS with 9 SBs and more walks than Ks.
Primarily CF this year, over 200 innings so far, 1 error.
Tonight was the Belt caught looking K in key late AB.
frozen by heat / on the black / again ?
About Belt-high inside near middle of plate.
Sinker.
Oh. Well. Maybe he’s getting old.
The MLB app now allows you to go back and review the pitch locations for each AB. A long overdue improvement.
You mean the data may show that Belt didn’t repeatedly lose challenges with umps over called strike three pitches on the outside edge?
They no longer serve Bud Light in my neighborhood saloon…
Fucking bigots.
Probably just an economic decision.
Isn’t everything?
No.
First, wtf drinks bud light? Who really cares? I’ve never had a bud light.
But you may be right. I’m old enough to recall Jim Crow. Those No Coloreds signs at restaurants probably did enhance business revenue overall.
Xoot, shitty beer dominates in the local dives here.
I’m positive they stopped selling it cause people stopped buying it for whatever reason.
Just people running their business.
The customers? Some bigots, some sheep but mostly guys who could give a fuck what’s
in the bottle on a beautiful Tuesday afternoon…
Bullshit. (You happen to catch that tv show Poker Face? Delightful.)
Probably more sheep than true bigots, but the bar won’t stock something that ain’t selling and that’s strictly about money.
Never saw Poker Face…
Cobb’s throwing a shit ton of pitches this inning.
As soon as i say that Kruk does. Jesus. 0-2 to walk. Was that twice?
hooooooooo
I like the promotion of Luis Matos to AAA.He’s still young just turned 21., but he was tearing it up at Richmond AA batting.304 and great defense in CF even winning a defensive GG last year.
This year the cool stat with the Squirrels was in 138 AB’s only had 12K’s with 17 walks so it shows he has a good eye with a good approach at the plate.Let’s see how he can handle AAA,and with the Giants continue injuries in the OF he’s one call away now to the show..
Yeah, this lineup needs to start filling up with prospects.
Needed that one. Nice-o for Conforto.
All 4 hits this inning on first or second pitch.
Did this last night during big inning, being ready to hit and doing damage early in count.
Cobb is in flail mode. Wasting a ton of pitches. If he gets out of thisI’ll be very happy
Kuip before inning mentions Phils are 0 for last 27 with RISP, so of course …
There’s a bullshit call. Every pitch Cobb throws is a balk then based on what he just got dinged with.
Fuck. This is a comedy of errors.
Speedy oil change. Your tire brake oil experts
Bud Light sales/stock have plummeted since the transgender controversy.I can see why pubs like the one Loo goes to just said screw it and pulled it and I’m sure they’re plenty more doing it as well..
And they’re bigots.
Time for Taylor to earn his $$$. I’m not hopeful.
It worked!!
that went well, K and ground out. Great slider to K Harper.
Baseball rubs up 17 boxes(12 per box =204 of baseballs per game? Hell I have a hard time rubbing my 2 balls!
Ditto!
Schmitt is the smartest guy on the team.
The importance of making contact!!
Hysterical!
