LOL!
Swept by the A’s. THE AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA’SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It’s both outrageous and hilarious.
It’s clear now that Farhan was and is counting on his existing players to ride out the rest of the season and hope for a miracle. He probably viewed getting Estrada back as some sort of trade-like move. Supposedly Harrison will get called up at some point. And Haniger…..oh god it’s just all so positively boring to even think about.
I am of the opinion that we all only have so many baseball seasons left to root for in our lives. That’s hard to argue against, right? So why not try your best in every one of them?
He just punted this season for no reason and I’m never going to forgive him for that.
And it is not like he is not sitting on a pile of cash for the next few years to take a couple of gambles. Must take the series in Anaheim to get back on track. Shohei is supposed to pitch Wed so let’s take the first two…
With all the Pac 12 chatter, I never thought about until Snarkk’s post about what happens to Cal and Stanford. This may be the path for the Spartans to finally move to an elevated status in athletics with a potential revised what I will call a new Pac West Conference. 16 teams 2 divisions with the Spartans, Cal, Stanford, Fresno State, San Diego State, Hawaii, Nevada and UNLV rounding out the Pacific Division. Oregon State, Wash State (splitting the four PAC 10 teams into the two new divisions), Boise State, Colo State, Utah State (or can they get Utah into the new conference???), Air Force, Wyoming and New Mexico in the West Division…
i totally support this. I really want Cal and Stanford to stay in the same conference.
My thoughts pretty much exactly. It could be hugely successful.
Sounds like making lemonade out of lemons. Probably the best of a bad situation, preserves at least regional travel sanity. Utah has already moved to the Big 12. Agree with BF that the Cal-Stanfurd situation must be preserved in any scenario. The TV money in this proposed conference will be crap, BTW, but beggars can’t be choosers. Cal athletics overall will take a huge money hit, with likely serious consequences to the scope of the sports offered. You can’t go from $20+ million from TV to $4-5 million and nothing bad happens.
Agree 100%.
Keep Pacific in the name. The California teams that left have lost their identities.
If additional funding for travel expenses is required, let the boosters pay, not CA tax payers.
Zaidi was Friedman’s Scott Harris in LA. They didn’t miss him at all when he left.
I believe our offense in 2020 and 2021 had more to do with Donnie Ecker as a hitting coach than Zaidi or Kapler in their positions. Should have given him the position that Texas did, they seem to be doing pretty well with him.
The thing about Zaidi is, he’s done exactly what he said he would do, build around the vets, strengthen the farm system and play meaningful baseball as late into the season as possible. I don’t recall him ever saying he was trying to build a championship team.
Maybe if he was living in the now and trying to win championships and not just meaningful games, he would have made some trades to try and strengthen the team for the stretch.
I agree completely that there are only so many baseball seasons left to root for in our lives, I want to win now. I could give a shit about the Giants 5 year plan.
And if he publicly declared “I’m going to build a championship ball club!” how would that change what he’s doing?
I find it strange that his stated goal is only to play meaningful games late in the season and yes, I realize October ball is late in the season but to me it comes off sounding like he means just the regular season.
Making way too much out of 2 Ls,. Bad as they are the A’s win 30% of their games. If SF and Oaktown played 10 times, pct wise Giants wound not win all 10 as fans would hope or expect, only 7. A’s took 2 of 3 vs. ATL (!) end of May and won 7 in a row mid June. 5 of those 7 were vs. Brewers (3) and Rays (2). One L doesn’t mean any more than another in standings, all that matters.
Giants are fortunate AZ Reds and Marlins are also slumping, and still lead WC with Phils. The Angels now sit below .500 themselves and have lost 6 in a row.
Not many soft spots left in schedule — H/A vs. Rox, that’s it. Giants still have H/A vs. Braves & Dodgers, H vs. Rangers, at Philly, at AZ, plus series vs. bunch of teams around .500. Not even getting a split with the god-awful A’s could well be a major setback in trying to get a WC.
True Mac but Baggs said in TA today Giants have .577 win pct vs. teams above .500, 3rd best in all baseball. And of course one of worst vs. not so good teams.
Yeah, this team is maddening.
Harrison has 48 BB in 58 IP. I suppose some of that relates to the periodic use of the robo ump (still not clear to me how often they use it in PCL — 1/2 the games?). Still…. Maybe he can handle a couple of innings in opener games, but he’s not going to be a second horse. Z has clearly implied that he’s coming up though.
Otoh, it is great to have Thairo back. I hope he’s not occasionally forced to spell Crawford, with brother Mathias manning 2B. But that LU does look possible.
I don’t get all the negatives here. Giants are outperforming most of the teams with the “shiny baubles,” whom spent millions and millions of dollars in the off season; or already had high flying “name brand” players – most of whom have face planted. Equally important, per ESPN, “. . . there weren’t that many high-impact players available, and many of the others would not have represented clear upgrades. The Giants don’t have much in the way of high-end talent, but they sure are deep.”
You can boo hoo the aforementioned, but the FACT remains that the Giants are in the highest Wild Card position in the National League and it will NOT be a “miracle” for them to make the post season. Go Giants!
Marlins were one of the more aggressive teams at deadline, adding reliever David Robertson, slugging IF Jake Burger and pitcher Ryan Weathers. And have lost 4 in a row since, 5 of 6 and 7 of last 10. so much for momentum lol. Fire Kim Ng!
Something to said for team chemistry. Baseball players are notoriously habitual, routinized people. Bring in several new bodies, take others away, hard to predict how team vibe is impacted.
It isn’t about shooting for the moon It’s about a mid-level deal that would have netted us a starting pitcher for a couple throw-away picks. I mean StL took low-level picks for Flaherty.
Maybe this 2 starters-4 long guys-6 late guys and 1 closer works. Weirder things have happened, but Farhan for the 2nd year in a row said he would be aggressive at the trade deadline, and did nothing.
Yeah, the rookies have been exciting, but these lulls, and the injuries to Wade, Yaz, Conforto, Haniger, Estrada, will slow the team down. As it did last year. Banking on these guys to stay on the field is a fool’s errand. Hence the scoring droughts.
Pitching staff sounds like something Buddy Ryan came up with…
“Looking at the National League, I don’t really see a seismic shift based on the trades,” Giants President Farhan Zaidi said. “A lot of it’s going to just come down to who plays the best down the stretch.” Again, from ESPN . . . “Though they (Giants) didn’t acquire anybody who would necessarily put them over the top, preserving that depth should serve them well over the next two months.”
Preserving depth? Luis and his .053 BA? Ice-cold Schitt? The depth we have has all been called up. Short of Harrison, who has yet to go 5 innings.
The point being, with Flaherty we wouldn’t be depending so much on all these long guy-bullpen games. Which is likely how Kapler uses Harrison when he gets called up. Which piuts a premium on scoring. Which we aren’t doing in droves.
Yes I’m impressed how the Giants have hung tough and have the top W/C spot sitting at #4 just behind all the division Leaders in the NL (and better record then division leading Brewers) and the Giants pitching staff 1-13 are far superior to LA imo .The hitting isn’t obviously superior to Dogpile but it’s the Giants way always torture and they have closed the gap significantly in the overall talent between the 2.I believe they can still win the division, call me crazy but this certainly would of helped..
At the deadline their was 2 players with which I would of liked to have Z just focused on hard with would of been that bulldog attitude pitcher Jack Flaherty just to help save arm usage going into the dog days and Outfielder Lane Thomas from Nationals RH slugger with speed who is coming into his own and I feel a real star in his mojo! Both Flaherty&Thomas are 27 hitting their prime years.Yeah trades can be head spinning for these GM at the deadline I don’t envy them, but it’s their JOB’S.I’m not always in that BS mode “the best trade is the one you never do’”
if you add 2Studs for the stretch run what’s wrong with that?Yeah even if Z made a courtesy call it wasn’t going to happen he’s just set in his ways but overall it’s both working and frustrating for fans.
Flaherty? First, I love the guy. Bob Gibson loves his intensity. But Flaherty has dealt with numerous injuries dating back to 2021, including shoulder, hip, hand and oblique issues. He has not been the same pitcher as he used to be given these injuries.
With the Cards, Flaherty made 20 starts this year, recording a 7-6 record, 4.43 ERA and 1.55 WHIP. Not exactly awe inspiring. Equally important, if he’s recovered from all these injuries and is on the upswing, why did St. Louis let him go? It can’t be to save $$$ on his salary, as he is only on a 1 year contract for $5.4 million. Big deal. If he’s so great, why didn’t the Bums, Snakes, Pads, or another NL team trade for him?
To me, he’s a non-issue, except for folks to just pile on Z, whom it’s well established that most Flappers hate.
Exactly. He’s more like Junis or Stripling–allows lot of baserunners hits and walks. League is hitting .273 off him with OPS of .777. Has a good month then back to reality. Cy flaherty he’s not.
Giants have much more effective pitchers in the pen that could cover 5 innings of his rented starts for 2 months.
Actually, my hate is for Charles Johnson and his politics, Farhan I just find mediocre, what you’d expect from an economics dude who was inspired by Moneyball. I do dislike Kapler as manager though.
Also, I think you’d find that most Flappers like Zaidi, but for whatever reason it seems you don’t think he should be criticized.
Agree, I hate Johnson too, as I think he is elitist, as well as being a racist MOFO. I don’t see “. . . that most Flappers like Zaidi.” Perhaps not hate as you said, but certainly he gets a lot of criticism here. Me? Umm, I just haven’t seen anything egregious that he’s done since being hired.
Like the Cardinals, Zaidi probably wasn’t sold on Flaherty. That’s a reasonable judgement, based on how he’s performed this year and last. Maybe Flaherty does turn it around with the Orioles, but there’s no solid evidence that he’d offer a lot more than what they’ve seen in house.
Last year, they lost 8 of 11 leading up to the deadline, at which point they were at 500 and 17.5 out. There were two teams ahead of SF for the last WC. It might have dampened his enthusiasm. Wasn’t the mood here more like “he should sell, but nobody would want to buy our players anyway”?
This years Giants have still exceeded what I thought we would do. I did expect more from our pitching but so did teams like the Dodgers and Cardinals.
The pitching is ranked 2nd in the NL.
I should have clarified. Starting pitching other than Webb, and Cobb but injuries will do that. I am sincerely grateful for having Doval and much of the pen.
the only good news is that the teams behind us are also losing
The pitching overall has been exceptional 1-13 strongest in the lead, well #2 as James points out.
Sitting at the top of the NL W/C spot shows their doing something right and they have a far superior 1-13 pitching then the Dogpile even if course the Dogpile has a much superior starting LU the gap between these 2 teams is closing fast!
I really think the Giants could still win this division the power in this division is shifting and winning the division and a 1st rd bye while the Dogpile would have to face Atlanta? on the road would be a major victory!
2 players I really wanted were Jack Flaherty&Lane Thomas (both 27 in their prime years)u get the Starter& a slugging RH outfielder with speed, but I’m sure the price would of been steep.
One thing the Giants org has always has is the overstated “Team Chemistry” they have it in volumes,Respect, Great clubhouse,Hell smoke bombs, blazing tecno music, used car air steamer this team is loose,Players busting hard for each other which a lot of teams don’t have and their PLAYERS want to be traded bigtime cause their stuck in a miserable organization
Test..
Lucas Giolito will start for Angels this series. Here’s last 5 starts:
LAA at ATL: 3.2 innings 8 hits 9 runs 3 bombs
LAA at TOR: 5.1 innings 6 hits 3 runs 2 bombs
CHI at MIN: 5.0 innings 6 hits 0 runs
CHI at NYM:3.2 innings 6 hits 8 runs 3 bombs 5 BBs
STL at CHI: 7.0 innings 3 hits 2 runs 1 bomb
Nice . . . Potentially, the Gmen could feast on this guy.
Great I guess I can say Test? but everything else ends up in spam folder?
“He just punted this season for no reason and I’m never going to forgive him for that.”
It’s more like he’s going for it on 4th and ten.
He SHOULD have gotten starter or two, IF he didn’t have to trade anyone who can help them win THIS YEAR. We don’t know if that was an option.
The game and the economy have changed radically in just the past three years. A successful team needs to rely on its farm system to produce a large quantity of above average replacement players. A successful ownership can’t rely on commercial real estate values. Can’t really blame them for going the Tampa Bay route, although we’d all prefer they went the Texas Rangers way. Farhan was positioned properly and got a bad hop.
The greatest change this year is the schedule. We’ll get to watch both the Rays and Rangers. One is an image Farhan sees in the mirror, the other is a photograph from the ‘60s, Giants fans see in their imagination.
XOOT and Kat–not sure why you guys have so many posts going to spam. Send me an email and I will respond by inviting you guys to be *authors* and that might fix that problem
my email is bigflavor77@gmail.com
thanks, Flavor. I think I already have that designation. Everything works ok from my computer. I suspect that I’m screwing up the log in on my phone from time to time. I’ll try more care.
Do you use the WordPress app? On my iPhone, I access the site via a link in the app instead of the web browser. Once you’re logged into the WordPress app, tapping the link to oneflapdown77.com passes on any additional credentials in the background. The app also provides quick access to comment editing, which I rely on heavily because I screw up at least half of my posts with missing words, etc. (Thank you, Flavor!) I’ve never had any problems with the app.
I’ll try the app. Thanks. I often edit my own comments when I log in via computer — typos, mainly. Very convenient, I agree.
I should add that once you’re logged into the app, you usually don’t have to log in again unless you’ve purposely logged yourself out.
The Giants start today tied with the Phillies for the top wild card spot in the NL. Behind them are the hard-charging Cubs. The Cubs (?!)
In yesterday’s Padres/Dodgers ESPN game, the broadcasters were doing one of their stupid on-field interviews, this one with Tatis. The Padres were behind 6-0, Tatis was playing in the outfield, and the broadcasters were cracking jokes. Tatis was laughing, joking around with them. Not a good look when your team is behind 6-0 in a big game in a big series, as you’re trying to get over .500 and into a playoff spot.
As if the Dodgers need more ways to be annoying, now when their batters get a hit, they’re doing a stupid dance that seems like over-celebrating to me.
Bumgarner would have an issue with it, and he wouldn’t be wrong.
Their dance looks like something from “I Dream of Jeannie,” but the world would rather see Jeannie dance instead of the Dodgers.

It’s cool when Jeannie does it; it’s stupid when the Dodgers do it.
I like those straw hats the Padres are giving out today. Good give-away item!
The game is on now on the MLB Network.
Yeah thanks Flav’s it’s probably me I just use my phone and probably need to wipe out old stuff before I post.
Got to love Jeannie she could do it all, besides dancing she would blow her Master! Like Greg Norman..oops that was probably inappropriate and might end up in spam again…🤣
The Padres starting pitcher, Tomato Can Jones, gave up 8 runs.
Yeah. Too bad beside gear they’re giving game away too.
Adios, Isan Diaz (Tigers claimed him, apparently), welcome Mathias and AJ Palooka.
With Webb, the stopper, tonight. Let’s check this app.
Excellent. Thanks, James.
Cool, you’re welcome!
Isan was a good Giant…
No surprise Carlos Rodon back to IL ,Giants sure were wise cutting ties!
no shit. They dodged many bullets last winter.
Another expression that they can’t seem to improve upon.
Like “no brainer”…
Willie, looks like the LHP Patrick Sandoval is starting against the Gmen tonight, not Lucas Giolito (or I misunderstood your earlier post).
Giolito tomorrow. Yeah you’re right P Sandoval tonight.
Ohtani starts Wed as SP.
another reason you have to log back in here is if you clear out your cache–that’s actually something Stix should do anyway, try to log back in, he’d probably be good to go here.

Can’t believe Wilmer’s batting .303 like Cookie Rojas did in 1965, when he regularly ate at my Uncle Teddy’s midtown luncheonette when in town with the Phillies.
Is luncheonette a NY word?
303 has a good ring.
Rojas is still alive too. couple of his cuban buddies on that team, Tony Taylor and Tony Gonzalez (cool player) passed within last 2-3 years.
1964 was epic collapse year, right?
And I thought we were the walking wounded . . .
INJURIES: Angels: Zach Neto: 10-Day IL (back), Sam Bachman: 60-Day IL (shoulder), Griffin Canning: 15-Day IL (calf), Jo Adell: 60-Day IL (oblique), Taylor Ward: 60-Day IL (face), Ben Joyce: 60-Day IL (arm), Chris Devenski: 15-Day IL (hamstring), Anthony Rendon: 10-Day IL (shin), Mike Trout: 10-Day IL (hand), Gio Urshela: 60-Day IL (pelvis), Jose Suarez: 60-Day IL (shoulder), Max Stassi: 60-Day IL (hip ), Austin Warren: 60-Day IL (elbow), Jose Quijada: 60-Day IL (elbow), Logan O’Hoppe: 60-Day IL (shoulder), Chris Rodriguez: 60-Day IL (shoulder), Jose Marte: 60-Day IL (elbow), Davis Daniel: 60-Day IL (shoulder)

“Is luncheonette a NY word?”
Yeah, it’s not used out here. One of those East/West differences.
No one says “have a catch” out here.
We say tuna instead of tuna fish, and pizza instead of pizza pie.
At some point someone introduced cheesesteak out here. I’m not a fan.
All the wonders of bagels got introduced out here. I’m a big fan.
Yeah that’s one hell of a list by Angels Blade 18 players? That’s 2 full LU cards..
Technically not on the list for Giants is Pitcher Keaton Winn who the Giants got good news on Saturday with no structural damage on his right elbow and could pitch by September ..
I’m morbidly fascinated by the lack of power from Matos. Almost 160 ABs, one HR, a .636 OPS.
This guy Sandoval is the JYD. He’s only thrown couple fastballs to the 3 hitters he’s faced so far.
per cbs site 2 fastballs out of 16 pitches.
Next batter up, Moustakas, I actually thought was out of baseball. Having a very good season to date. Always liked him in KC.
Not to many Giants players have faced Sandoval much, but Slater,Flores,Pollock& Davis have all hit HR’s off of him and Davis with his single is 3-4 so .750 that’s good own age .
It’s the curse of Donovan Walton. All of these guys are supposed to be at least sorta ok hitters, but the 2B scrubs, one after another, have been abysmal at the plate. They’ve played good D, at least.
whatever gave you an idea that guys like Wisely and Mathias are “sorta ok hitters”? I’d love to see the stats you look at that say those 2 guys are major league hitters you’d want on your team
??? Look up Mathias. He’s got a 725 OPS. 6 bombs in 160 ABs. He’s a back up. Those are ok numbers. Wisely had no ML track record. He had stats in AAA that suggest he could produce a little more than he did while here.
Mathias had 919 OPS for Texas last year, 824 overall.
Wisely’s OPS in Sacramento is 924
Estrada offers 2B stability — except there’s no such thing now. Gotta get Crawford’s LH bat out of the line up. Gotta get Slater’s ineffectual RH bat in. Reminds me of last year at its worst.
Strike outs R Us.
Yeah Bailey comes through. Much more productive RH.
Donovan Walton geez I still can’t believe Z traded Perlander Berroa for that stiff!
That’s one trade Z I bet regrets, Mariners fleeced him in that lopsided trade..
Nice catch Slater.
Wilmer!
Damm 2 great leather plays by Slater&Mr.ED saving Webb right there!
Yeah surprised he got out of that unscathed.
Always liked Renfrow, decent OF RH power. 26 doubles/17 HRs this year.
A’s up 3-2 on Boch’s boys in 6th…a team they currently trail by 34 games in AL West.
Just go Worrell, Felix, Nen.
What could go wrong?
lulz
How did that happen? what was Matos doing out there?
Wow. Matos responsible for all those runs with his shit fielding.
Bailey holds on runner is out, right?
I thought so. Ump did too.
Bailey was given an error. I don’t agree with that. He’s making a bang/bang play.
He dropped it.
Not every drop on a tag gets an error. I just disagree with that ruling.
He had a pretty good throw, true hop on the money ahead of the runner. He grabbed the ball while swiping down on the runner. Clearly out. Ump was convinced. Then the ball trickled up the third baseline. He stared at his empty mitt. Bang/bust play.
We’ve all seen many plays like that without the catcher getting an error.
Old time collisions maybe.
Not just those.
Can’t believe Bailey dropped that ball Cron was dead meat. Matos having a terrible inning as well, as K&K rip into him..
What a fuck up by Matos.
Matos fucked up that play two times over.
Heliot on another hot streak btw. Last 2 weeks 17-52 2 HRs 3 doubles 2 triples. OPS up to .905.
He and Luciano both topping exit velocities down there.
Fitzgerald though is not. 1-20 in august with 8 Ks. Luciano and Schmitt down there to cover IF, so he’s probably an OF for now.
JD on the rocks.
Took the weight off of the rook’s back with that swing. The crowd must be mostly Giants fans.
Like I mentioned earlier JD Davis has own age on Sandoval now 4-6 with 2 bombs!!! As he ties it up while K&K still continue ripping Matos a new asshole!
Our big trade acquisition.
Good
God. It’s the field of clowns
Pollack looked liked a spinning top on that play..
AJ got rusty up there in Seattle.
Now the LHs. Huh. Joc! The AI almost called that one.
Closeclose close fuck
Kuiper’s “high drive” has reached full jinx status…
Maybe their are Angels in the Outfield blowing Joc’s ball back??
I hate when the division just collapses and gives it to the Dodgers.
Another knock for Wilmer.
Pinch runner?
You got it!
Yeah Bailey!
Wow!!
Did they trade Pollack to the Angels between innings?
Yeah new guy!
Angels be Angeling.
