A Win!
I know I only caught the last 4 innings of that game but man that was EXCITING. Probably more so because we won. Had we lost that game I’m not sure I could have found a single thing to be positive about the remainder of the season.
DeJong and Harrison to take us to the post season. Universe, make it so…..
I had the reverse where I missed the last couple of innings with a family dinner. I may have lost my shit with that Harper three run homer so good recovery. Looked like Doval went again heavy slider after the day before I saw one if you suggest he kept shaking off Bailey the night before and went sinker heavy. I have said in the past he relies too much on the slider and gets caught putting runners on base. He has an extraordinary fastball and ne needs to throw that high strike more. I was with you when I thought it made sense to trade for DeJong before the trade deadline but picking him up is a complete no brainer so give Farhan credit there. He came up huge and might be a nice option for 2024 mixing with Luciano, who probably both can move around to second and third.
We should have gone 3-3 on this road trip but we could have almost pulled off another win Atlanta and gone 4-2 and dont think we played well for most of the trip. We could have gone 0-6 pretty easily as well. I still think we will have a fight on our hands just staying in the wild card race, but no one is beating Atlanta in the NL regardless…
anyone can beat anyone in mlb. ATL bats go quiet for a couple of games while ours get hot and we beat them easily.
Hope they can get Doval sorted. He was fine last outing vs. ATL w 5 out save. Followed by 2 clunkers without command of hard stuff or slider.
We all complain about 3 outcomes baseball, but one part of it is on pitchers. Beck walked two guys bringing tying run to plate in 8th, and then Doval got wild as well. dunno what it is but inability or unwillingness of pitchers to throw strikes (while maxing velo) these days is maddening.
That win yesterday could turn out to be pivotal if the Giants and Phillies tied for the topWild card spot.Giants took the season series 4-2 so that would give them a home opening series while the Phillies hit the road Jack!
Nice to pin L on Kimbrel too. Doval wasn’t only closer that blew it.
Lance ain’t going anywhere. Shanny may want to cut his losses, but unless someone offers a 2 and a 3, he ain’t going.
Even if someone offered a 3, I don’t think they take it. Not sure how Lance would be a cap hit after this season if we don’t take his 5th year option, but if it comes to that the hit would be minimal as opposed to these other options.
i’ll give you credit for sticking to your guns.
Sorry for not getting back sooner snarkk regarding your 9:50am post yesterday. Putting out fires on the home front (kid has been sick the last week or so) and haven’t paid attention to baseball the last couple of days. I am conflicted . . . Specifically, not one person here on the Flap, nor any other blog, newspaper, or most fans for that matter – thought the Giants would do this well this year. So, how do you explain that? Also, I am not one to throw up my hands and panic day to day on what the Giants do. Right now they are in the hunt for a playoff spot. Who doesn’t like that?
I love all the new (rookies) guys that we have seen this season (5-6 at last count) and think most of them have promise, albeit, with growing pains. Concurrent with the aforementioned, does Z get credit for that? Does he get credit for avoiding the Correa, Judge, Rodon signings?
So, does “. . . the rubber meet the road next year?” I think so, but only so far as making the playoffs (after that, we all know it is a crap shoot and anyone can win).
Thanks, blade. I always like to hear your POV.
Yes, Zman gets credit in my book for resurrecting the minor league system from ashes to a top 15 or whatever depending on what service you look at. Also, for avoiding the stupid FA signings. I’ll admit, my patience will be tested next season. He’s got to bring in some top position player talent. You can’t seriously compete for a deep post season run with a continual carousel of scrap heap dudes and last-season injured dudes (with hopefully bounce-back seasons they can parlay into longer contracts next season with other teams). This organization makes too much money to keep filling the roster this way. The rookies brought up this year for testing and seasoning will need to step up and really play next year.
“This organization makes too much money to keep filling the roster this way.”
Good point . . . Although Z made good calls on not signing Rodon, Judge, and Correa – I absolutely get it that this organization can afford a quality free agent. Not defending him, but if I recall correctly, it was so late in the free agency signing period, that when his attempts to sign these 3 didn’t work out, the only thing left were “scraps.” Again, I don’t know this unequivocally and I am not going to research it, but if I am wrong on this – someone tell me who was left in free agency to pursue and why that would have been a good fit here???
Thank you for the kind words. Appreciate your POV too. Actually, everyone here has good takes! I come here for a dose of reality.
Didn’t we all pick somewhere around 85 wins?
You know Doval can get off his high horse and sit down with his translator/Kap and Bailey and get him to agree that if the best 2 starters Webb&Cobb believe in Bailey calling their games u need to also instead of taking your time indecisive on what 3 of my pitches do I want to throw as the clock violation is about to expire that Bailey has saved your ass numerous times.
If u get burned by a Bailey pitch selection so be it,that shit happens but u have to trust your catcher instead of short circuiting solo on the mound..
Doval has been one of if not the best closer in MLB. He doesn’t tick the ball Tuesday and it’s another save. He will be fine. We have bigger worries then that…
The pen was nails earlier this season. These last few meaningful games, they’ve been terrible. Granted, there’s been like 3 in 2 weeks so there’s that.
And Lance is at practice today.
Winning yesterday the way they did is a sign of things to come. Offense starting to wake up. We win our next 3 series imo!
Sandawg said 87 at the high end and I had .500 (81) . . . Here’s the rest Unca:
Right now they are on pace for 84 (.519) or 85 (.525) wins
I had them on an “optimistic” 86 Ws…
Not hard to adapt these numbers for the Giants. Rev sh payor, of course. But the huge real estate dev on the cove. Wtf couldn’t they have signed at least on good SP?

Blade thanks for sharing opening day thread. Not bored at all this season with low to mid 80s W total given all the injuries and uncertainty with rotation.
Other than Braves and Dodgers, and LA isn’t nearly the same group as 2021 or 22, the rest of the NL isn’t anything much better than Giants imo. Farm seems capable of adding needed every day replacements to starting lineup in near future, and their pitching is still among top 3 NL with more help on the way. Depth is important, and adding Winn Brebbia Harrison (and subtracting few lesser lights) could be even better next year.
If you’re looking for Z to go get big FA bat, bound to be disappointed this offseason. Other than Ohtani (who now profiles as DH til elbow issues resolved) and Bellinger (looking for big $$ off rebound year) not much out there beside 3b Matt Chapman.
Willie, I will ask you the question I posed to snarrk (or anyone else can chirp up too) . . .
“Not defending him (Z), but if I recall correctly, it was so late in the free agency signing period, that when his attempts to sign these 3 didn’t work out, the only thing left were “scraps.” Again, I don’t know this unequivocally and I am not going to research it, but if I am wrong on this – someone tell me who was left in free agency to pursue and why that would have been a good fit here???”
Saw this elsewhere, but Aug 24 1975 was Ed Halicki no no day.
Flavor was there!
He probably predicted it…
that’s cool, i didn’t know today was the day. I didn’t predict shit that day and I remember not understanding that it was that big of a deal. A year or two later my tee ball coach took us to a game vs the Phillies and we met Bob Boone in the parking lot. His girl was with him, didn’t look like his wife. She wasn’t wear a bra and she was short and i could see right down her tank top. First titties I ever saw live.
Tenuous sports connection at best but … I drove around on errands for couple hours today and KBLX old school station played Midnight Train to Georgia at least twice.
Ha, soft and warm the quiet storm. Still going huh?
Old joke from 70’s recession:
Things are so bad, Gladys Knight just laid off the Pips…
“a superstar, but he didn’t get far”
The Pips were great.
tough times for Giants fans in those days. 74-77 L totals were 90 81 88 and 87, 4 different managers.
Maybe our minor league system wasn’t rated that high when Zaidi came on board but having Logan Webb, Camilo Duval, Villar, Matos, Ramos and Luciano coming up, I sure wouldn’t call it bad.
No I wouldn’t either Loco they have some talented players that just need more experience and AB’s stick with the youth and start fading out the vets, and dump some more useless 40 man roster players! Why are players like that Catcher Perez,P Sapuki (sp)Randy Rodriguez etc are they protected cause they’re injured?I don’t get that cut ‘em and add better prospects to the 40 like Fritzgerald, Whisenhut, and btw dump both the useless trade acquisitions Pollock&Mathias as well..
Huh. I had 86. Still feel good about that, but I don’t know if that gets us in.
40% of the teams make the PS.
It’s not that remarkable anymore…
In the NHL for a time it was 16 of 21.
If you’re really old, you remember 4 of 6…
The Reds/D-Backs game is on the FS1 Network.
Bochy is having his first real tough stretch with the Rangers.
“Not one person … thought the Giants would do this well this year.” I know what you’re saying, Steve, considering they’re in the post-season hunt, and maybe most of us didn’t think they would be at this stage of the season. But they’re 5 games over .500; after about 5 months of playing, that’s 1 game over .500 per month. I think many people figured this team for around .500, I know I did, and that’s where they are. Just so happens that some of the competition, beyond a couple of elite teams, is also hanging around at the same level. Giants could certainly get hot and go on a tear the rest of the way, and wouldn’t that be fun?
What I do like about this team is that we’re finally getting a view of what the near future could look like. Might or might not pay dividends this year, but this 5-year mark of Z’s tenure is obviously key. I’d hoped to be a year or so further toward that sustainability – I remember Sparky Anderson taking over the Tigers in ’79 and saying they’d be at the top of the league within 5 years, which they did achieve, albeit not sustainably. Now, we Giants fans can start to see some possible sustainability moving forward. I still hate the fact that the F.O. hasn’t been able to build a decent starting rotation, but the other pieces are falling into place. Yeah, Loo, you must see it now, they must score 4.3 runs per game! Haha.
Well, Loo makes a good point too . . . “40% of the teams make the PS.
It’s not that remarkable anymore.” This is all about putting butts in those seats. Per MLB, “In a surge not seen in MLB in a quarter-century, attendance is up 9 percent this season when compared to the same number of games in 2022 — a total increase of more than 4 million fans and an average of 2,424 per game.” Giants attendance? Ranked 17 at 1,944,353 total and per game, 30,862. Four teams are averaging over 40k.
https://www.espn.com/mlb/attendance
Interesting that I am reading that there is a very serious COVID-19 strain going around that may make the others pale in comparison. No idea if it will affect attendance.
I think the games are too short now for the live attendees. For all the time, effort and money you’re spending, what’s the rush to get out of there?
It’s much better for the TV & radio crowd especially east coast fans of west coast teams…
As much as I was just fucking around with Twin on that matter,
I actually believe it’s very logical…
Yes, it is somewhat logical. This year, scoring 3 or fewer runs: 11-44. Scoring 4 or more runs: 54-17. Of course, some of the latter was needing to score well over 4 in order to win…
Anyone still interested in Ohtani sweepstakes? He has a tear in his ulnar collateral ligament.
Ohtani had a UCL sprain five years ago and underwent Tommy John surgery. “That could be the course of action again — a procedure that would keep him off the mound for all of 2024 and severely impact his free agency, which was expected to net him a contract of at least $500 million.” Wow! I bet they are wishing they had traded him a month ago.
He can still hit a ton, with a repaired elbow rehabbing.
Harper did that with the Phills…
With no Giants game today, I finally saw the movie “Oppenheimer.”
It’s very well done, and very long, and it has quite a story to tell. And causes the audience to think about something we don’t like to think about: all the nuclear weapons that exist in the world. Oppenheimer’s moral struggle over helping to invent the weapons is one of the big elements of the film.
All the actors are great in the film. Cillian Murphy is getting a lot of well-deserved attention; but Robert Downey Jr. and Emily Blunt in supporting roles are also especially terrific. I didn’t even know it was Downey Jr. in the film until the end credits, because of the way his looks are transformed in the film. I kept thinking that actor looks vaguely familiar, but can’t place him. I don’t follow the Academy Awards all that closely, but Downey Jr. is a strong contender for Best Supporting Actor. His role is crucial to the success of the film, and he knocks it out of the ballpark.
By success, I meant artistic success; but obviously the film has done outstanding box office, too.
On a side note, the theater I went to charged $13 per ticket. Ticket prices for movies ain’t cheap these days.
$13.00 IS cheap for a movie. Yeah, it was good. Good acting good writing, but it didn’t need to be 3 hours.
The A’s were eliminated from playoff contention.
Lol. Lasted longer than expected.
