A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Game 1 Was Great

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on October 28, 2023

I don’t understand why people say things like “oh man the network must be so bummed about this match up.” This is a fantastic match up. Both teams have exciting players. Arizona is incredible with their speed and athleticism. And Texas can just bomb the shit out of the ball.

Any baseball fan would appreciate this World Series.

Golf in Davis today. Wild Horse. This was the trip we were supposed to do with my man Gary. So it will be bittersweet but I’m excited to play and toast my friend over a fire pit party later tonight……

Stupid people saying stupid shit. I dreaded a Houston Philly matchup just because I dislike both those teams. That was a great game. Do want to see AZ pull it out.

media is so east coast focused so anything not east coast or LA is thought if as not worthy of attention or hype. After beating the Flodgers and losing the first two in Philly, I figured this would be a spent team in AZ and they came back. Blowing the game last night with Seward giving up the tying home run for his first post-season earned runs I would expect AZ to be a bit drained and probably tonight would be a must-win to even up the Series, but AZ has continued to surprise and be resilient. TX has never won so I’d rather see and Boch win as I rooted for Dusty last year.

You’re right about this matchup, Craig. I have found reasons to *root* for either team, but watching that game, I found myself *rooting* for both teams when they were batting. Just good fun baseball with no real horse in this race. Have a good day out at Wildhorse, I’m sure you will feel some moments there about your friend.

Texas pen only allowed 2 baserunners in 6 innings of shutdown work after AZ scored 5 off Eovaldi and stole 4 bags.

    • PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on October 28, 2023 at 9:00 am

Yeah, that was the difference, as Dbacks’ pen couldn’t hold ’em off. Let’s see if that trend continues. Could be the better ‘pen wins this thing.

AZ walked 10 guys last night. Gallen walked in a run, then in 9th Sewald walked #9 hitter Taveras before Seager bomb By contrast DBax inability to get on base negated speed advantage.

    A toast to Gary . . .

Read a piece on the dodgersway.com site titled “Giants extending Zaidi shows refusal to admit Dodgers bamboozled them”. Pretty scathing opinion piece (right, obviously not fact, just someone’s opinion). Subtitled “Another 3 years! Rejoice, Dodger fans”…. Overall gist of it is that the Giants thought they’d be a closer version of LA blending big money with “forward thinking analytics”, but instead, Z has treated the Giants less like LA and more like the A’s… Let’s see if Z puts his money where his mouth is this off season.

Well, wake me when the Dodgers win a full season World Series. You know. Like the rest of the teams.

Shit, even their 1981 world series was a 100 game season. They have ONE legit World Series since 1965!!

  8. willedav said, on October 28, 2023 at 11:00 am

Eff LA and their idiotic fans opinions. they have enough things to worry about after upstart AZ took them to woodshed 3 straight. Genius GM added in Lance Lynn and nothing at deadline to help beleaguered pitching staff–how did that work out? Opie melted down in playoffs–another surprise to no one.
AZ outscored them 19-6 as even superstars Betts and Freeman helpless. Pitching staff ERA 6.58.

Agree that this latest Dodger choke was probably the worst of them all. Pathetic performance against AZ. Win 100 games, then lose all post-season games. #1 AL seed Orioles as well.

Thinking back on all of Bochy’s WS appearances, including with SD, I don’t think he’s ever lost a WS game 1. Maybe he did in SD. Sure came close last night.

I think the Pads got swept by the Yanks.

  9. alleykat69 said, on October 28, 2023 at 3:15 pm

Why does The Dogpile continue to keep Roberts? He’s proven over and over he can’t get the job done in the playoffs ( and no COVID year doesn’t count!! a useless half year of baseball)

    • unca_chuck said, on October 28, 2023 at 3:46 pm

They lost 4/5 of their rotation and a couple relievers to injury and suspension.

That being said, I”m GLAD they are keeping him. He’s done less with more than just about any other manager in baseball history. Only the Braves and their 15 years of winning the East and only getting one WS is pretty epically bad.

  10. unca_chuck said, on October 28, 2023 at 4:42 pm

Cal fumbles a punt on their own 12 and blows their 14 point lead.

  11. unca_chuck said, on October 28, 2023 at 4:48 pm

    And another fumble!!!

  12. unca_chuck said, on October 28, 2023 at 4:48 pm

And USC fumbles the next play!

  13. unca_chuck said, on October 28, 2023 at 6:22 pm

Hell of a ot of crazxy defensive plays so far. Make me think we are pretty far behind teams like this,

  14. unca_chuck said, on October 28, 2023 at 6:48 pm

    Longo with the RBI.

  15. unca_chuck said, on October 28, 2023 at 6:53 pm

    4-1 dbacks!

  16. snarkk said, on October 28, 2023 at 7:09 pm

Longoria seemed to always be hurt for the Giants. Now he’s getting an RBI single in the WS. He hit it hard, but looked to me like the 3rd baseman could have made a play on that ball, just whiffed it…

  17. unca_chuck said, on October 28, 2023 at 7:12 pm

Longo’s playing good D as well.

Didn’t we have this guy Stratton? Did we draft him? Name sounds familiar.

    • xoot said, on October 28, 2023 at 7:34 pm

He was the kid who stopped a nasty line drive with his head.

  18. snarkk said, on October 28, 2023 at 7:14 pm

I listened to most of the Cal/SC game. Cal should have won it. But, even when they were ahead 43-29, not for a second did I believe they’d win. Cal always fumbles, gives up pick 6s, stupid penalties, etc., to give away a game. They just don’t have a ton of talent, so they make mistakes. Too bad, they outplayed SC, but gave it away on killer turnovers. Oregon will crush the Bears next week in Eugene…

  19. unca_chuck said, on October 28, 2023 at 7:15 pm

Pham is lighting it up. Yeah, watched the game whe I saw the score was 43-29. Then the hilarity ensued. At least they nutted up and went for 2. Really though the smart play is to go OT at home.

      Death of Marat it’s not.

  21. unca_chuck said, on October 28, 2023 at 7:41 pm

Oh shit! He’s been going through a ton of shit over the years.

    Damn.

The defense in this game is nuts. Play after play on the infield.

  22. PaulinAsia Banh Bao said, on October 28, 2023 at 9:13 pm

Yeah Charlie, you’re right about Bochy’s Pads being swept by NY. Here’s how muddled my brain can be, I was remember SD winning game 1 against Detroit in ’84 and then losing all the rest… How ’bout those Dbacks. I’m in Phoenix. Wonder if I could scalp a ticket next week…

    • unca_chuck said, on October 29, 2023 at 8:14 am

That would be cool! Yeah, I’m pulling for the D-Backs. Just think they are a fun team. Shit, they bunt runners over, steal, and drive them in. What a concept. They went all-in on the rule changes.

AZ acquired Ketel Marte back in 2016 in deal with Seattle for Jean Segura who’d hit .319 for DBax and Mitch Haniger. He was good player in 2019 when we saw him at Flap game.
Merrill Kelly was let go by Tampa and signed as FA 2018. Last 2 years have been his best seasons ever, at age 35.
Gallen (age 28) was traded by Miami to AZ for then 20 year old Jazz Chisholm July 2019. Gallen made 34 starts this year but ERA rose almost a full run from 2.54 to 3.47.

  24. willedav said, on October 29, 2023 at 8:57 am

AZ also traded valuable Daulton Varsho to Jays in December of last year and got C Gabe Moreno (4 WAR player) and 24 year old LF Lourdes Gurriel, who hit 24 HRs for them, 3rd most on team.

In book I read by NYT writer Tyler Kepner on World Series (Grandest Stage), Mike Fontenot is answer to an amazing trivia question. He was on winning team and listed as getting in 1 game but not getting an AB–because he was announced as PH, then when Rangers changed pitchers to LHP Bochy pulled him back and Font never ever got into another game.
I can’t remember exactly how author phrased it But Font is only guy in history it ever happened to on winning team.

  26. Winder said, on October 29, 2023 at 12:21 pm

This is a far better series than the Phillies and Astros would have been imo. Still rooting for Bosh but hope that it goes 7. All pro sports are copycat leagues so hopefully we can try and copy AZ’s solid moves.

Wasn’t there a Flapper who lived in Houston? Wilco? Haven’t seen him here in awhile.

Touchdown Mac the Colts great Lenny Moore is still alive too, age 89.

He might be able to score on Niners D right now.

    • xoot said, on October 29, 2023 at 3:53 pm

      Penalties 5 for 54 SF, 0 for 0 Cin

  31. mrsprtdude said, on October 29, 2023 at 4:51 pm

Purdy will get the attention, but the 1st int, while bad, took a great play by the lineman. A tough blow at the time. Aiyuk and Kittle had key drops that cost us, even though they both played very well. Our D line was supposed to be a strength, and so porous right now it defies explanation.
Had a great weekend in Az visiting my daughter. ASU won there 1st game against a real team so a fine time! Go Rangers!

  32. unca_chuck said, on October 29, 2023 at 6:01 pm

Fuck that shit. Once again the defense was soft and very ineffective. This shit is on Wilks. He has to go. NOW. And Purdy needs to figure out when to just give up on a play rather than force shit. Bad bad play for that pick. WEe were close, and he needs to understand there;s another play to be had.

Once again, we were out-coached and out-played.

    • Flavor said, on October 29, 2023 at 6:36 pm

agreed. Rip the band aid off now. I don’t give a shit who gets the reigns just someone who knew what Ryan was doing. Fire him today, get right during the bye week. It’ll never happen because of too much pussification but it should.

  33. Locojuan said, on October 29, 2023 at 6:54 pm

Man that sucked, the D is getting worse each week and the offense starts pressing when they get behind.
They need to get their shit together during the bye week.

  34. xoot said, on October 29, 2023 at 7:29 pm

Brock’s not perfect but he’s a thousand times better than panic dancer Jimmy g. And yeah Deebo’s out. But they have the players. The brilliant offensive coaching has just vanished. As to the D, does that DC ever adjust?

Anyway, a dozen predictable handoffs and short passes to cmc early and a dozen desperate throws to Kittle late won’t cut it.

  35. unca_chuck said, on October 29, 2023 at 7:51 pm

Well, the last three games our o line and d lines were dominated by teams that aren’t that hardcore.

Well, I’ll give Cleveland their due. Their D line is for real, Even though they just lost to Seattle.

But Minnesota and Cincy are not known for being defensive stalwarts or having high-powered offenses. Till they played us.

Whatever is going on, teams have found that quick passes in our underneath zone is money money money. We once again can’t stop screens. Our high-pursuit defense is not pursuing very well.

But all that leads to the pass rush. The wide 9 that DeMeco and Saleh used, I haven’t seen. We are awful at pressure now, and just get picked apart. We did a little better this game, but it wasn’t enough.

Brock certainly isn’t gona go out and score 21 points in the 4th, but the defense is simply doing nothing to keep games close.

  36. unca_chuck said, on October 29, 2023 at 7:53 pm

In other words we should be running the ball better than we are. Cincy’s run defense is dogshit and our O line did nothing against them. I just don’t fucking get it.

Those Acura ads are killing me.

Janie Hendrix? Whatevs. Sitting on 10,00o miles of tape and selling shit like this.

  38. unca_chuck said, on October 29, 2023 at 9:59 pm

Shanahan is going down as the Dave Roberts of the NFL. A guy doing very little with a fucking stacked lineup.

Yet another disappointing loss to a team that has been struggling to do anything all fucking season.
