A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

And That’s Another Wrap

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on November 2, 2023

Bochy has cemented himself as one of the greatest managers of all time. What a wonderful ending to this *mid baseball season. *Mid if you’re a Giants fan. I do have some hope going forward. Despite Farhan’s pathetic attempt to save his own skin by shitcanning Gabe 3 days before the season ended, it is reasonable to put our faith in Bob Melvin—a true baseball man who understands how the game is supposed to be played.

The Flap is now shutting down for the foreseeable future. Thanks for coming back this year, this place is for you guys and you definitely make the most of it. If Farhan does anything interesting I’ll fire it back up for a week to give everyone a chance to chime in. Aside from that, I’ll catch you guys on or around April 5th…….

Have a great Winter.

You too Flav hit ‘em straight or straightish…we may need a week in Dec bantering about free agents but may be another cold free agent winter…

Manfred has to be in full Saran Wrap mode.
Free spending big market Rangers with new stadium and high priced talent dispatch plucky upstart Giant slaying DBax to win it all for likeable old school Bochy and everyone is happy. Rangers have some young talent and the draw of power hitter like Garcia (whom they didn’t even need to send AZ packing). Boch could grab couple more before he rides off into sunset.

Meanwhile success of AZ shows his new expanded playoffs give even teams that barely get a WC berth can get to WS. Therefore hope prevails for rest of the 80+ win teams in all baseball. Fact that AZ best offensive stat was the SB (10th HRs and 8th NL for OPS) only adds another feather to his cap. Changing rules (and juicing the baseball for HR crazed) works!
Face it, we’re stuck with this guy.

Thanks again and always, Craig. You have a good winter too. If we don’t see you here before April, I guess that will mean no big moves in the off-season, so here’s hoping for a pop-up Flap now and then….

7 different Al teams and 4 NL teams won more games than AZ did, and Marlins also won 84. The mgr. starts Evan Longoria at 3b in WS…
As Flav and Paul said, not enough pitching/lack of even 4 SPs and trying to win critical game with opener. Bottom of lineup Thomas Longo/Rivera Perdomo all below average hitters though fine enough defensively. Game 3 they scored 1 run, Game 4 they fell behind 10-0 early and Game 5 they get shut out, as Longo has only XBH. ATL would have made better NL representative in Series but randomness of 12 team playoffs is what it is.

Not holding my breath but this should be an interesting offseason. Flavor, glad you’re going to keep it open during the season. Enjoy the off-time.

Hopefully winter good for everyone. Haven’t heard from Stix in awhile, hope he’s OK .

Bochy is now the fourth former Giants manager to win the World Series after leaving SF, joining Alvin Dark (’74 A’s), Joe Altobelli (’83 O’s) and Dusty with Astros last year. And with Dusty and Bochy the last two, maybe someone should hire Kapler for 2024.

  9. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on November 2, 2023 at 2:38 pm

Way surprised to see Kapler interviewed for the Boston GM job. I guess eve he thinks his managing days are over.

Flav, once again, thanks for this. What a different world we would all be living in if this never came to be. Boggles the mind.

I’m sure I’ll see you at my blog should anything interesting happen with the Niners.

Yes, truly amazing. Over years I think I’ve been fortunate to meet 10 different guys from here at games or gatherings.

Well, we’ve got Curry and the Dubs looking, yes it’s early, like they have some potential mojo going this season. So, that’s a good reason to look forward to the next 6 months of Bay Area sports. We’ll see about the Niners, they may have looked better early than they really are. Giants? Melvin is the obvious hire, but he’s no miracle worker. He needs players. Major league quality players. Farhan needs to get him a handful this offseason. Happy Fall, Happy Winter, Flappers…

getting that idiot Poole out of here who was always at risk of dribbling the ball off his foot and replacing him with the nearly mistake free Chris Paul has really done wonders for them early on.

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on November 3, 2023 at 8:22 am

Oh yeah adding Paul is huge upgrade in knowlege and experience. Plus moody and kuminga finally ready to play with vets. And Dunleavy added in Saric (best since OPJ and big improvement over Lamb and JMG) and couple good picks. Myers I think didn’t want to hear about tough decisions coming up from Lacob, who had to be pissed he spent all that lux tax $$ and got bounced out in second round. The contracts (Poole certainly among others) and bad drafts meant changes had to be made.

Flavor, I join others in thanking you for a platform all season to rant, rave and applaud our beloved Giants. A healthy and prosperous offseason to fellow Flavor bloggers.

Congrats to Boch. Great accomplishment from a genuine class act. Ironic that 14 years ago Boch won his first World Series also in early November in five games with the clincher on the road…against the Rangers. Four World Series titles all won on enemy turf.

Agree with consensus opinion of others that Giants offseason will rise or fall on Zaidi and Putila’s ability to make meaningful acquisitions – perhaps Yamamoto from Japan, Jung-Hoo Lee from South Korea, Ohtani or other MLB marquee players available through free agency or trade option. Giants have multiple deficiencies which need to be addressed: defense, speed, long-ball presence in everyday lineup, starting rotation pitching depth.

Zaidi and Putila won’t be able to resolve all issues but they need to make two or three substantive moves in offseason to give Giants reason for optimism in 2024. If Giants brass replicates past offseasons with only marginal Conforto-esque, Haniger-esque, Stripling-esque acquisitions, it will be another lost opportunity where the rich teams get richer (Dodgers, Yankees et al.) and the fiscally conservative teams spend wisely (D-Backs, Rays et al.).

During end-of-year press conference, Zaidi referenced need to reassess roster construction. I was big fan of Zaidi’s hiring in 2018 but after five years on job time has come for Zaidi and Putila to (1) settle upon long-term winning strategy and (2) show tangible offseason results with substantive improvements to roster. It’s tall order but Zaidi’s been Head of Baseball Operations for five years, not one.

Regardless of 2024 results, it’s overdue for Zaidi tenure to have clearly defined blueprint to challenge for title each year. I wish I had more confidence in future path for Giants.

And it gets worse! A hold on the screen gets turned into offensive foul.

  18. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on November 3, 2023 at 7:29 pm

Can it get even more stupid? Dray gets a flagrant for trying to shoot?

  19. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on November 3, 2023 at 7:54 pm

In the end they disavow a goaltending on Dray!!!!!!! He touched the rim as Steph’s layup went through with 0.02 left.

    Nutzo.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on November 3, 2023 at 9:18 pm

Giddey touched the net first, therefore goaltending Steph’s shot. Incredible shooting by both teams.

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on November 3, 2023 at 9:19 pm

Gary Payton2 makes such a difference.

  20. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on November 4, 2023 at 9:30 am

Yeah Giddey grabbing the net saved Dray first from being a numbskull.
Has to be a NBA record maybe? Warriors winning 2 games this year with .02 on the clock meaning only a tip play could happen, no grab and shoot..

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on November 4, 2023 at 2:00 pm

      2 in a row.

      Hoosier Philly at 20-1.
