A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

More Farhan Nonsense

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on January 6, 2024

Just checking in on this Robbie Ray stuff. Mid move. I’ve got no problem ditching the Horrible Haniger and Disco. And we definitely need starting pitching (although you could argue Disco could at least give us something in the first half of the season, something Ray cannot do).

To me, this feels like Farhan is selling us a shiny bauble. “Hey Giants fans! Look over here! A Cy Young winner!!!!!” Bottom line: Ray has had 2 very good full seasons in his career. A bunch of other average years. He’s 32. Oh, and he’s got that thing Farhan LOVES: he’s got an opt out after the 2024 season. So here we go again, if he sucks he stays if he’s good he bails. Although we might have a little insurance on that one since he’s already making so much maybe he doesn’t leave even if he has a good season because no team would be dumb enough to give him more than he’s making now.

Anyway, he’s not even going to be available till mid season so I can already hear Farhan now: “When we get Ray back this will be just like the big trade deadline move that I would fail to make otherwise.”

Whatever, we stink and LA is a million times better than we are. I couldn’t be looking any less forward to this upcoming baseball season…….

Only possible silver lining is that moving Haniger means they are expecting to add an OF and I will keep my hopes up it will be Bellinger. Then adding one more starter would make things more encouraging heading into the season but why do I expect that starter will be a dumpster dive reclamation project…I’m back home here in the Bay for a few with my daughter.

Further reinforcement of the value of SF Giants Flapper blog. It’s always real, grounded and factual.

My initial reaction to trade yesterday was more positive, primarily for what we unloaded from payroll. Haniger was injury prone and outfield already populated with similar type mediocre talent: Yaz, Slater & Conforto.

Disco also injury riddled and only had one solid year – 2021. Robbie Ray strikes me as lesser version of Blake Snell. Early 30’s, couple great seasons not too distant past and certain upgrade from Disco, Stripling, et. al.

I’m not as concerned with Ray’s opt-out option after next year. He’d really need to excel 2nd half of year to attract interest from other teams. However, unless they’re orher additions through free agency or trades, we’re probably back to one or two openers first half of year until Ray and Cobb healthy.

As for Farhan, the comments accompanying each free agent signing or trade are sadly getting old and stale. I admit I was big advocate of Farhan’s hiring in 2019 but five years later SF Giants management seems strangely content with being semi-competitive and accepting marginally talented roster while LA & SD spend without limits and AZ with more restricted payroll spends wisely focused on athleticism, speed and defense.

What’s Giants’ blueprint for success? Beats me. But with first measurable snowfall in two years predicted in northeast today, it’s reaffirming to be talking baseball.

well, if Ray sucks or is stil hurt, either could happen, then we are stuck for another 50 mil after the 2024 season. But whatever, that isn’t the financial hit it once was.

Glad to get rid of those two mediocrities and their contracts. I agree, though. As is, the roster wont be much fun to follow. About as exciting as this:

Wacky to the Max.. Love it when the guy in the lead with nobody around oversteers anyway and flips. Awesome…

    “More Farhan Nonsense” – Agreed.

As Baggs said “Giants’ trade for Robbie Ray looks smart — but it has to be the beginning, not the end.”

don’t think i’ve forgotten that you called out Farhan as a mistake first my man. You are wise.

I took some shit for that.

I still hope I get proven completely wrong about the guy, and I hope it’s soon.

I thought I’d read awhile back that Z said they were going to stop doing those opt-outs, which truly are stoopid and don’t much help the team. Whatever. Disco and Hangover were Z’s signings, so now he’s got me somewhat interested to see how many others of his can be shed via trade instead of trading *the youngsters*. Maybe that was his plan all along…. Getting Lee for CF made me hopeful, but if no one else follows or Z goes back to his old MO, then this team is so screwed. But other than that: Happy new year, Flappers!

One turd for two. I guess that counts as a win. If we’re lucky, he’ll pitch this year.

If he pitches well, hey, he opts out. These deals are laughable. Same shit, different offseason.

Must be the fog. I hear Bellinger doesn’t like driving over bridges, so he really appreciated the offer but couldn’t pull the trigger on the Giants.

    According to Farhan.

I don’t like driving over bridges either.
      Especially if traffic isn’t moving.
I once left my car on the Verrazano Bridge and ran back to Brooklyn…

He might as well offer Bellinger a billion dollars. Deferred to 2080.

    From the article:

Anyway, the latest on the race to land him comes from Mark Feinsand, who writes that it’s looking like the San Francisco Giants at the moment:

“The Giants, Red Sox, Cubs and Angels have been tabbed by sources as the finalists for Imanaga, but according to one source, San Francisco might be emerging as the favorite.

‘It’s all pointing to the Giants,’ the source said. ‘They missed out on [Shohei] Ohtani and [Yoshinobu] Yamamoto, and although Imanaga isn’t on the same level as those guys, they don’t want to miss out again.’”

Haniger was a bad move from the get go. Slow OFer, injury prone. He proved out both during the season. Mariners are hoping he’ll be back healthy and they get lucky. -Descalopini — whatever. The fact that SF had to pay Seattle $6 million, too, is pretty telling. Robbie Ray is a complete shot in the dark, and I’m not feelin’ it. So far, this hot stove season is a nothingburger for the Giants. Dodgers seem to be signing anybody that’s available and deferring all the salary. Giants are so far in the Doghairs rear view that you need the Webb telescope to see them…

    • Paul Sorensen's avatar Paul Sorensen said, on January 9, 2024 at 6:52 am

Webb telescope, good one… Agree on both who are gone. Giants are still in need of 2 good starting pitchers and at least one better position player than Wade Davis Conforto etc. There’s still time and maybe the stove will finally get hot.

        It ain’t a stove this year, it’s a hibachi…

  17. Locojuan's avatar Locojuan said, on January 9, 2024 at 11:27 am

Per NBC Sports Bay Area- Giants not a finalist to land Imanaga in free agency.

    How quickly things change.

  18. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on January 9, 2024 at 2:25 pm

Yep. Must be the wind. Or the fog.

This is reminiscent of Reggie White, when he was a free agent, said “I’ll go where God thinks I can do the most good.”

So, naturally he picked Green Bay over the 49ers. Key word there being green.

Wonder if there’s anything to Posey’s remarks about the SF mess.

He’s got a lot of credibility.

Although the burnt out ghetto slums of Fort Apache (the South Bronx) along with the Son of Sam didn’t stop Reggie Jackson from coming to NY in ’77…

  20. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on January 9, 2024 at 3:44 pm

it could be something. It could be everything. It could be them cheaping out and Farhan & Co simply going through the motions for appearance’s sake. But if crime/homelessness was a real issue, who would go to Houston? Or Pittsburgh? Or St Louis? The main reason it seems like BS is because Posey moved back here from GA to raise his family. The players aren’t gonna be exposed to any of the seedy sides of ANY city, be it SF, LA, Boston, or NYWe never hear the conversations so who knows? But really, Barry Bonds is the ONLY top FA signing done in the history of the team. And we all know why he came.

  21. Paul Sorensen's avatar Paul Sorensen said, on January 9, 2024 at 5:45 pm

I’m going to guess that one of the biggest factors causing free agents to avoid SF — probably bigger than all the “the city sucks” stuff — is that they look at this team perhaps similarly to how many of us fans look at it: It’s a mess. Real starting position players don’t want to platoon or get pinch-hit for in the 4th inning; real starting pitchers don’t want to deal with openers. Caveat: maybe with Kapler gone, those things won’t be big issues this year. Z still has a month or so to get 1 or 2 frontline pitchers and another bat or two, and maybe it’ll have to be by trades. I’m hopeful, but realistic, as in, I’ll believe it when I see it….

It’s the money, Paul. Kris Bryant went to a horrible Colo team for a payday. Most players take the money when offered.

We are simply playing the game and giving lip service to signing impact players.
