A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Late Inning Meltdown

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on March 29, 2024

I thought a surprising number of people were fretting about our bullpen going into the season. I wasn’t one of those people. Then of course the bullpen chokes the game away. I only listened to that inning on the radio but it didn’t sound like too many of those balls were hard him. I shall continue to not worry about the bullpen.

Exciting Friday evening matchup in San Diego tonight…..

Alex Wood goes 3.1 innings and gives up 7 hits/6 earned runs for A’s against Guardians, who were one of worst hitting teams in AL last season.

Starting C for Cle was Austin Hedges. Remember him as highly touted prospect who began career with SD but hasn’t ever hit much. One total season over .700 OPS, and none in last 5 years over .600. Dunno what d metrics say about Joey Bart, but Hedges is now in his 10th year, so if he can get a ML job somewhere, still hope for career.

cbs story said announced crowd there was 13,500, half of last year opening day and that “many who bought tickets did not actually enter the stadium with fan groups organizing a boycott in the parking lot.” Sad state of affairs there.

J D Davis couldn’t find anywhere else to play? yikes

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on March 29, 2024 at 8:11 am

yeah i don’t get the JD Davis thing. Why did we bail on him? Why couldn’t he do better than the A’s? I like him

    • xoot's avatar xoot said, on March 29, 2024 at 11:52 am

the rival LF and RF bleacher gangs have banded together for the SELL! boycott. Please sell to another billionaire who can screw us over again! Please!

I sat in the RF bleachers for a PS game in 2013. Ticket cost $44. The incessant drumming was as bad up close as you’d imagine and the drunks with big flags were happy to block views.

one sign I saw on the news last night was kind of cool. A Latino guy had turned the team’s official yellow gothic A upside down and made it the first letter of Vende!

  2. xoot's avatar xoot said, on March 29, 2024 at 8:37 am

Agree on JD. That nagging injury (foot?) dogged him most of last year and he was still good. Just dfa him? And Joey’s plight is odd, too. Z man looks like a piss poor salesman.

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on March 29, 2024 at 11:34 am

is it the woeful defense or the anemic batting average that is a major selling point for Bart?

Not sure why you think Davis or JD are much more that end of the bench guys. The league is littered with 25-30 HR / 80 RBI guys who don’t hit for average. These guys don’t hit for either.

      • Lurker John's avatar Lurker John said, on March 29, 2024 at 11:56 am

Agree. With Chapman coming in, there was zero need to keep the constantly injured JD around, and Bart has needed to go far, far away for a long time. He is not a big league player, IMO, certainly not a catcher. Buster set the bar way too high to tolerate that kind of defensive mediocrity behind the plate, let alone the crappy bat. My guess is he won’t be around for long. Maybe they’ll try to sneak him through waivers now with all the rosters pretty much set. If he goes, he goes.

      • xoot's avatar xoot said, on March 29, 2024 at 2:36 pm

littered? lol. First half last year, JD Davis hit 11HRs, 14 2Bs, w .800 ops. But he got hurt. Still played, lame , becz his D mediocre as it could be was better than Wilmer’s. I much prefer Chapman.
        https://bleacherreport.com/articles/10098191-ranking-the-top-25-third-basemen-of-2023-mlb-season

Joey had brief bursts of power in 2022. His arm is good. Always has been good. I don’t remember much about him last year. He’s pretty much useless on a team with two good catchers. But there he is.

Jackson walked 2 guys, gave up a single, and Walker promptly gave up a smoked double by Cronenworth.

JD Is the Freddie Electric of the current team. The more he plays the less he hits. I’ll take Chapman’s D over Davis’.

  5. Lurker John's avatar Lurker John said, on March 29, 2024 at 11:58 am

Jackson looked like crap in his first outing. Any update on his injury?

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on March 29, 2024 at 3:20 pm

  7. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on March 29, 2024 at 4:41 pm

Like I said last night Jackson would be heading to IR and he is the Giants recalled another bum to take his spot Pitcher Kai-Weng Teng hopefully just to mop up until they activate Mason Black to pitch after Snell home opener I’m guessing they still have Winn to pitch against the Doghairs..

  8. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on March 29, 2024 at 4:52 pm

I’m sure they have Brebbia on speed dial.

  9. Lurker John's avatar Lurker John said, on March 29, 2024 at 5:07 pm

Jackson was pretty good for stretches last year, so hopefully yesterday was an outlier and he’ll get his shit together. He has good stuff. The Giants almost always seem to start slowly. Interested to see what Harrison does tonight.

  10. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on March 29, 2024 at 5:22 pm

    The A’s suck.

Probably the worst team in MLB. And, they’ve gobbled up several Giants from last year’s team. What does that tell you about last year’s Giants’ talent? Kappler is probably wondering what got into Farhan and his spending spree on real talent this spring…

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on March 29, 2024 at 5:54 pm

yeah how hilarious is it that the A’s first two SPs this season are Wood and Strip.

  13. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on March 29, 2024 at 5:52 pm

JD can hit. He wasn’t going to cost shit and he could have been a solid bench player and a great clubhouse guy. Maybe they thought he couldn’t pinch hit? Bart always should have been sold off a couple of years ago. I’m telling you, Z’s inability to sell off any of our blue chip guys is going to be his downfall. None of them seem to be amounting to shit……

Greetings. Catching up on some of the earlier discourse here: Magnus’s winter of discontent (Shakespeare cofuses me on this: does he mean the discontent is in hibernation, atrophied, hidden? Or that it is diminished, not growing? Most likely, either or both); Bart’s presence (great spring; I’m still not sold, tho’ he’ll go elsewhere and be the return of Johnny Bench); the Ohtani mess (I don’t believe him either; I tend to think MLB will whitewash it, as it likes to do, but I dunno; the feds are also investigating).

Gentlemen question mark. That was TedSpe’s signature closing. We’re still in touch.
