A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

All Flaps Down

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on April 22, 2024

Hey guys– sorry we had a service interruption. I was responsible enough to keep the yearly payments on auto pay but not responsible enough to recognize when my card expired. Anyway, I was a big fan of seeing Melvin and Williams show a little fire yesterday. I don’t think we saw that in 4 years combined from Kapler.

And while I wish we had won the game we still split the series vs a team that was in the World Series last year. So despite our record i like where we are right now. Team is still coming together. Plenty of time left.

Yes tons of talent on the team. JH Lee and Hicks were terrific signings. Chapman close behind. Webb’s looking good, etc. DH 1B RF and SS?. Wade’s good but Wilmer needs to get more ABs (but Soler). Fitzgerald needs to relo to Sac. I’d rather watch Schmitt. Heliot could be platooning with Yaz or giving conforto a rest day now and then (but Slater). Something of a puzzle. And pen depth? Hjelle?

anyone else have trouble with wordle the other day when the solution could’ve been holly, dolly, golly, jolly, molly (a fish, not E), or folly?

    • Locojuan's avatar Locojuan said, on April 22, 2024 at 10:45 am

That one took me 6, I did get today’s wordle in 2.

I’m with ya on Fitzgerald, I like his speed but bringing in a rookie to play 6 positions at the MLB level probably isn’t the greatest idea.

Got it in 4 mainly because I used those other letters in wrong guesses.

I’ll give credit to Carroll the CF for making nice plays out there all weekend and saving his pitchers from more grief. Giants scorched a few he wound up snagging out there.

and wound up being done in by their own misplays.

credit also to Hicks for battling through 5 innings without best stuff or command and only allowing 1 run despite 4 BBs and back to back HBPs. Took him all 96 pitches but held AZ mostly off scoreboard. Guy sure is interesting and seems invested in SP role.

Once this team jells it looks like we could be dangerous. Hope we don’t damage Harrison.

Giants defense still not up to snuff. Wade is OK at first, just OK. Wilmer is a defensive liability wherever he plays, but he’s clutch at the plate.

Today, Farhan bought journeyman pitcher Mitch White today from Toronto to take the place of Cobb on the 40 man after Cobb went on the 60-day IL with his recent setbacks. White is an ex-Dodger, what a surprise. I don’t understand why somebody in Sac can’t take that spot…

    • xoot's avatar xoot said, on April 22, 2024 at 12:33 pm

1B is a problem. Wade’s OPS right now is .925. Bailey after his bobblehead game is next at .915. No one else over .800. As long as Wade’s bat is that good, he has to play. He’ll cool off. But who’ll play 1B?

  5. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on April 22, 2024 at 1:40 pm

The pickings are thin for 40 man eligible pitchers( only 4)at Sac right now.

You have Teng no thanks, Jeffries definitely sucks, White? Really? Shit so far getting hammered… But then theirs Randy Rodriguez who they have protected along time now and he’s been great in 7 innings so he’s my choice, but I’m guessing their waiting on Action Jackson to return soon with his broken down Vet body..

Nice feature of Flavor nation is platform to voice different opinions. Today’s comments mostly positive with conviction that better days are ahead for Giants.

I wish I shared that optimism. I was and remain big fan of Lee and Hicks signings and view Chapman as definite upgrade at 3rd with belief his BA and OBP will rise as spring turns to summer.

But middle infield deficiencies, black hole in RF, uncertainty about Soler, question mark on Snell, delayed return of Cobb and inconsistent middle relief corps give me doubts.

Then again I’m from Northeast Corridor where pessimism is everyday companion so likely it’s just me. My simple ask is for meaningful baseball in Aug & Sept with playoff implications and Oracle packed. But having to endure Mets propaganda all year, for today I’d settle for Giants taking 2 of 3 from Mets.

  7. willedav's avatar willedav said, on April 22, 2024 at 2:48 pm

I don’t think Fitz can afford any more gaffes, in field or on bases. Giants do need somebody to provide rest for Estrada and for Ahmed once bat starts to fade from .284 back toward mean of career .235. Wilmet at 2b isn’t great option either and he also doesn’t have HR yet in 55 ABs.

Brett Wisely is hitting .344 at Sac w .955 OPS. Not much power though, only 1 HR and 5 doubles in 64 ABs. Schmitt can certainly cover SS and 3b, but hasn’t played near as much 2b.

there is also a stretch of games next month when Giants play 16 days in a row.

  8. willedav's avatar willedav said, on April 22, 2024 at 2:56 pm

After Pirates leave town, Giants go start road trip April 30 Tuesday vs. Boston Philly (4) and Rox for 10 and then return home for 3 each vs. Reds and Dodgers. No days off in btw.

  9. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on April 22, 2024 at 4:47 pm

Yeah, Fitz the Butcher (the Barber of Seville?) is having a pretty rough go as each of his errors seems to have led to bad things. Throw in that horrendous foul tip call that was not reviewable I guess, and that fucked up yesterday’s game.

  10. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on April 22, 2024 at 4:49 pm

For all the changes, the team on the whole is still pretty old and slow. I’m mildly optimistic only because the pitching will improve if all the injured guys come to form, and Oooo that Snell stops snelling.

  11. willedav's avatar willedav said, on April 22, 2024 at 4:59 pm

Great story in Yanks game, as A’s break 8 game losing skid by shutting out NY in Yankee Stadium 2-0. Boone got tossed in first as home plate ump Hunter Wendelstedt mistook heckling comment from fan in stands behind dugout as coming from Boone, whom he had just warned after argument over whether A’s batter Esteury Ruiz had swung at pitch that him in foot. 1b ump said no swing and gave Ruiz first base, HW agreed and told Boone to shut up or he was gone.

  56. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on April 22, 2024 at 10:09 pm

I’m not convinced yet that Doval is not a million dollar arm with a one dollar brain. He needs to get his mental sheet together.

What was the rationale for Murphy? He’s better than Bart? Not that I can conclude so far.

Anyway, nice win with good pitching, timely hits and middling defense. I hope the defense gels as we go along towards mid-season. Right now, it has its ups and downs. And, so far, even with hopes from a new coaching staff, the Giants pitchers suck on defense, as usual…

    • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on April 22, 2024 at 10:43 pm

Yeah, they expected a lot more than they are getting. His defense is not very good and if he can’t hit, then WTAF?

    • James's avatar James said, on April 22, 2024 at 10:45 pm

Bailey is supposedly not as good from the right side, although I just looked up his splits, and he’s performed much better against lefties than righties. Murphy has an 820 career OPS against lefties. Bailey, like all catchers, needs regular rest. The chances of facing a left handed starter over any 4 game stretch are pretty good.

Joey Bart was subpar for several years running, and showed few signs that he was ever going to turn it around at the plate. He’s 27 years old.

At least Cardinals fans can point to Hicks’ 100+ fastball and some success ….

      • willedav's avatar willedav said, on April 23, 2024 at 6:37 am
