A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Derby Day!

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on May 4, 2024

Thorpedo Anna was very very good to me in the Oaks yesterday. The Derby is wide open. Not even tossing out a pick. There are 7 horses I think who can win.

I saw the box score that we lost again. Pfffttttt……

Hopefully things improve for Giants offense because otherwise this isn’t going to look good on Pat Burrell’s resume.

Riddle idk answer to is, what happened to Mike Tauchman? he was so bad a hitter for SF (OPS + of 56) in 2021 they sent him down to Sac, and waived him end of the year. He spent 2022 in Korea and this season has started 23 games in OF for Cubs, one of 5 teams in NL over .500.

He’s hitting .276 w OB over .400. In almost same number of PAs as Cody Bellinger, Tauchman has more XBHs and an OPS 100 points higher.

Way to go Flavor. Guy in the bar next to me needed her and was panicking at the half fraction which I thought was fine and she was doing it easily.

I can’t stand Repole and if he’s beatable it’s another dartboard derby.

    Might take a stab on Prat’s horse…

Loo’s Knicks are great story. Philly series was epic, w Josh Hart hitting the 3 that wound up being game winner, and former Warrior (arrgghh) DDV nailing 2 clutch FTS to clinch it. Nova trio were fantastic, and DDV played all 48 minutes.

Hart is on his 4th team of 7 year career and transaction page in b-ball/ref reads like something out of Tolstoy. He came to Knicks in massive 4 team deal. Credit to Knicks for big trade w Toronto earlier, and now former teammates O G and Siakam will see each other again in semis.

Knick GM has really done a job. I don’t get that crazy from them but they’re a great watch especially since the OG heist, which most Knick fans were against cause they were in love with IQ. Rangers and Knicks have completely priced me out of the playoffs…

  33. xoot's avatar xoot said, on May 4, 2024 at 5:17 pm

i don’t think rules now allow teams to “protest” a game for any reason. So: Rule 7.03(3) — they can just refuse to play further. Wonder if you could make a case for a rainout if you defaulted for demonstrably good reason before 4 1/2 innings played?

  34. zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on May 4, 2024 at 5:21 pm

      • xoot's avatar xoot said, on May 4, 2024 at 6:10 pm

No. Not even about the past. He’s done. Hjelle’s another thing tho. From the CF cameras and the guns his stuff can look pretty good. Maybe the slow, upright, motion he needs to use to command his pitches removes all deception? The batters can time and see the release real well? Randy Johnson didn’t throw like that.

      • James's avatar James said, on May 4, 2024 at 6:24 pm

Slater rakes lefties, may do it again, may not. He’s not that old.

Johnson didn’t, but Chris Young did. He had average stuff, but used his height to real advantage, deliberately coming over the top in his delivery. Hjelle is far more talented.

      • xoot's avatar xoot said, on May 4, 2024 at 6:33 pm

Slater raked a lightning bolt double down the line to walk off opening day 2022. I had a great club level view. I’ll always remember it. But I’ve seen a load of failure from him since. Raking a pedestrian out to LF sucks.

I’m not rooting against Hjelle. But I think his exaggeratedly slow, graceful, upright motion allows hitters to see his release clearly. His height doesn’t seem to give him the over the top advantage you’d expect. I’d say his numbers concur.

      • James's avatar James said, on May 4, 2024 at 6:41 pm

I’m actually not a big fan of Hjelle, he muddies the picture. Not that I’d be unhappy if he all of sudden turned it around. I just pointed out that another pitcher who had a very similar delivery with an 89 mph fastball and not much else recorded a lot of Ks and had some good seasons.

      • xoot's avatar xoot said, on May 4, 2024 at 6:53 pm

Hjelle has 8 IP this year, .0750 WHIP. 7 SOs. Hard to bitch about that. His athletic limitations seem unique. Last year’s numbers concern me.

On Wikipedia, reading about the forfeited games in MLB history is pretty entertaining.
    Here’s one:
“Ten Cent Beer Night: A promotion held by the Cleveland Indians on June 4, 1974, backfired when intoxicated Cleveland fans ran onto the field and attacked Texas Rangers outfielder Jeff Burroughs with the score tied 5–5 in the ninth inning. This led to a riot in which the drunk and rowdy fans, armed with an array of improvised weapons and various other objects, including chunks of the stadium seating, brawled with players and officials from both teams as well as with the umpires, who subsequently forfeited the game to Texas.”

My thinking about this team is that it’s a work in progress and it will continue to change and adapt (and get better). But it’s kind of hard to fathom how Melvin keeps putting a .125 hitter in the leadoff spot when the guy should probably not even be on the team. My hope has been that they are on the path toward building a rather set, sustainable lineup, to fulfill their promise of getting younger faster and stronger, and to not just appear as a concoction of players. In that light, I’d love to see Matos starting in RF and Ramos in LF, Luciano starting at SS, and Schmitt starting at 3rd. Those are potential long-timers, if they succeed. The likes of Conforto, Slater, Ahmed, and Chapman are not. Not sure what the team is waiting for, except for the fact that most of those “kids” are not exactly lighting it up in the minors. But they’re all we’ve got, and they really can’t be any worse than a handful of the current collection of mediocrity in SF. They sure as hell aren’t going to get any better hitting ML pitching as long as they’re not facing ML pitching. Bring ’em up already.

    • xoot's avatar xoot said, on May 4, 2024 at 8:11 pm

I’m with you on Ramos. Give him a shot. Dump Slater somehow. If he can field and run and rake someone will be interested. If Ramos falters give Matos another shot. But Chapman and Conforto are not problems. They’ll be good WAR players all year. I’d prefer Schmitt over Fitzgerald, but who else will pitch in forfeited games.

    • James's avatar James said, on May 4, 2024 at 8:02 pm

That was a bizarre looking play. The hitter swung extremely late and Sabol didn’t extend his glove to receive the ball. It’s like Melvin challenged because he thought there wasn’t anything Sabol did wrong, even though the bat clearly hit the glove.

  54. Paul Sorensen's avatar Paul Sorensen said, on May 4, 2024 at 9:25 pm

Xoot, agree that Chapman and Conforto are not problems, per se, but I also don’t think they are solutions. Chapman (hitting around .220) already said he plans to opt out after this year, and Conforto (hitting .250 now after a great start, sliding back to his norm), is in the final year of his contract. Just not long-term solutions. Ramos or Matos for Slater is a no-brainer immediate thing, the other changes may take more time… but they should be made, IMO.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on May 5, 2024 at 8:25 am

Wouldn’t be surprising. Ramos and Luciano should be up soon at least, maybe Schmitt too. Bottom line this team is only going as far as SPs and pitching in general. Unfortunately Webb Winn and to lesser degree Hicks haven’t been quite as good as earlier in season. Hopefully at least for first 2 recent outings were one offs and help from Sac can mitigate things.

  55. willedav's avatar willedav said, on May 5, 2024 at 8:45 am

Baseball really is a funny game, as Garagiola said ages ago.

Most hitters are streaky, as hitting is really hard. Yaz Estrada and Flores got off to bad starts that they have started to turn around. Conforto is opposite, and couple others like Soler haven’t gotten going at all.

Luis Arraez led NL in hitting at .354 last year, and yet he still made 300 outs. So you could post “arraez grounded out again” twice almost every day if all you focused on was negative, and still be right. I don’t look at baseball like that–even torture games are fun and exciting, win or lose.

and when stuff like yesterday happens players shake it off and get back at it, not getting too high or low over 6 months of season. good way to make your way through lot of things.

    • xoot's avatar xoot said, on May 5, 2024 at 9:05 am

Like chopping wood, Jack Clark in his LAD hitting coach days told a guy I know. Hit it hard, Barry Bonds said. Although guy on tv Friday said that Bonds as hitting coach with the Marlins taught swing down on the ball and let your hips and follow through give it lift. Easy enough if you’re a great athlete with eagle eyes. Just square up the ball and round the bases.

Arraez 4 hit game in debut had Padres smoking DBax 13-1 for 4th W in a row.

That was preceded by SD losing 5 in a row including getting swept at home in middle of it by red hot Phils, dropping them 4 games under .500 Now they have retaken 2nd at 18-18.

Another club that got smoked last night? Atlanta Braves, as Dogs pounded 5 HRs off them at Latrine in 11-2 rout. Dogs beat them in 10 night before on walk off single by rookie Andy Pages. Braves have lost 4 of last 5 (scoring 13 runs total) and 5 of last 7.

Just saying, stuff happens to everyone over course of season.

Have we won three in a row yet? I’ll be happy to see that stuff happen.

It amazes me the Giants continue to keep 40 man roster spots for pitching chumps like Jefferies,White,Hjelle..

You guy’s know that Hjelle drafted in the same draft as Bart(2018) has a career ERA of 6.00 in 60 big league innings? He flat out Stinks! Guess the Giants still don’t want to lose faith in him since that happened to Bart, that was a terrible draft just cut losses and improve the 40 man roster quality..Don’t even get me started on a rant about White&Jeffries!!!!

    • xoot's avatar xoot said, on May 5, 2024 at 1:13 pm

2018 was a bad draft for a lot of teams. Best pick was probably Kyler Murray by OAK at 9. We all know why he slipped down to that spot.

The Giants’ top pick in 2019 has been a sad story so far. Bishop, an outfielder, had a major shoulder injury in the low minor leagues, and a year or two later had a major elbow injury.

but they grabbed the great Tyler Fitzgerald in the fourth round.

So I’m not seeing Mason Black being added on the 40 man and especially the 26 man roster right now!Even though they were saying he’s pitching tomorrow? And yet here we go again they put Jeffries back on the team ( to implode in another start?)ferchrissakes!!
Catchers now are Blake Sabol&Jaxson Reetz who was just activated to take both Bailey ( concussion)& Murphy (knee injury) this is messed up going forward.Atleast they dumped White for now as he was DFA’d but will end up back at Sac after no teams will certainly pick him up…

ESPN announcers apparently don’t know that Sabol caught plenty of games last season and is probably familiar with Webb…

  64. willedav's avatar willedav said, on May 5, 2024 at 4:27 pm

Giants if they win will make 27 outs in 9.

Hopefully they can get 27 Phils out too and have better score by then.

Webb just made Schwarber look pretty silly, it’s what he does. gonna happen to lot of guys I imagine tonight.

What a shock, of course the error ends up costly. Fucking Ahmed.

Ahmed’s silly error cost Webb the lead and many more tosses.Guess all teams will be also able to run wild on the new Giants catchers..

Looks like the sweep is in store, barring a minor miracle.

The talent differential here is pretty wide.

Giants blow right now. Question is how long will this be allowed to continue without making some moves? As is, this doesn’t look like a wild card team to me. Getting close to 40 games in, Chapman’s bat is a huge problem. Schmitt with his .763 OPS in Sac might be a better hitter at the moment, and not too much worse as a fielder. I’m out…

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on May 5, 2024 at 5:15 pm

they spent the second most this off season (after LA of course). I doubt they’re gonna blow it up 40 games in.

    • Macdog's avatar Macdog said, on May 5, 2024 at 5:18 pm

There’s another one tomorrow, unfortunately. And yeah, the talent gap is ridiculous. 0-3 vs. Dodgers, going on 0-3 vs. Phils, the Giants are thoroughly outclassed by the NL’s elite.
