A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Can’t Win Anymore

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on May 6, 2024

Well, on the plus side we broke a 9 game streak of scoring less than four runs. Think about how pathetic that is for a moment.

Still 4 games left on this terrible road trip. Say, I wonder if we’ll be able to score 4 runs a game in Colorado?

Flav somehow I am not getting the auto notice of new daily posts via email. I must have changed something if you have any obvious suggestions but my least favorite Giants topic is Farhan. How many years has he been in charge and this where we are as a team with our batting lineup??? There are no more excuses. He has had years to develop a farm system and there is no one else to blame. Our potential every day players are all still mired at AAA.

I said last off season I am fine if this is a year we determine what we have in the system with our hitters give them their shots at playing every day and if they can’t make it at this of their careers then make a decision on their long term viability as a Giant. If that means we are 20 games out by July, who cares? This team is not playoff capable so why pretend??? Ramos needs to be up and playing and if he can’t play this level they need to move on. Matos Soriano are the future so let’s make it happen. Ahmed Yaz Slater are not the future…time to move on…

Agree with all your points and Flavor’s frustration. 6 weeks of uninspired, listless, error-prone baseball. Giants lead league in three categories: runners left in scoring position, base running gaffes and defensive miscues. Farhan’s 5+ years symbolized by free agent signings and trades for marginal journeyman players many of whom wouldn’t start for other teams. And if the growth and development of farm system since 2019 has been that successful, wouldn’t we have seen more youth up from Sacramento making meaningful contribution to big league roster?

Baseball’s long season and there’s plenty of time to turn things around. But returns to date don’t portend long-term success. Perhaps Mason Black gives us shot in arm literally and figuratively today.

True, true, WP certainly does suck the big one!

It wasn’t like this 4+ years ago — an occasional glitch back then was acceptable .. now? .. almost daily WTFs?

I also agree about Farhan, hard to believe we are just as boring as last year.

Saw on X Acacia said Japanese jockey had legit claim of getting moved up to 2nd due to bumping in stretch, but no objection filed. New blood from Reetz helped last night, maybe Black making hometown start does today.

    • Flavor said, on May 6, 2024 at 10:18 am

not only did the stewards not lodge on objection but the jockey didn’t either.

    Yeah, WordPress.

Looks like my Edit function is back on, for some reason. Also, like it used to be, today I suddenly don’t have to log in every time I make a post, which has been the case the past few months. I gave up trying to figure that out, but now today, it just self-fixed. No clue what’s in store tomorrow…

Years ago, my wife surprised the heck out of me with a birthday gift of tickets for us to a Giants game that were really close to the field. To this day the closest seat we’ve ever had at an MLB game: the sixth row, behind the visitors dugout. That would have been awesome enough, but by sheer chance, it turned out to be a Lincecum start. This was when Timmy was in his prime. I got to see up close what the batters had to deal with. A similar experience to what James wrote about the other day when he had a close view of Tyler Roger’s pitching.

Lincecum basically threw two pitches in those days. An electric fastball and an electric change-up. The opposing hitters were just guessing, and even when they guessed right they couldn’t square him up. The Giants won a low-scoring game, and I think Rowand, of all people, hit an HR.

  9. zumiee said, on May 6, 2024 at 9:11 am

    Sneaky day game today.

  10. xoot said, on May 6, 2024 at 9:16 am

I watched Lincecum throw his regular side BP session at the E Coli before a day game with the A’s. We were so close we could hear some of the conversation he was having with Righetti. The FBs hit the mitt like gunshots.

  11. snarkk said, on May 6, 2024 at 9:38 am

I saw a Zito start and a Timmy start the same season. Can’t remember which one. At ATT.

Zito came out about 45 min to an hour before game time. He did a bunch of different stretches on the ground and on foot, then a little jogging. Then he did about 15 minutes of seemingly laborious long toss in the outfield, gradually increasing the distance of the tosses until the last ones were well more than half the outfield long. Then he came to the Pen mound and threw deliberately for maybe 15 minutes, IDK how many tosses, but quite a few, seeming to work on a few things. Then into the dugout to wait for the game to start.

Timmy came out from the dugout about 15 minutes before the game started. Maybe before coming onto the field, he warmed up or stretched some under the stadium, maybe not, IDK. But, when he came out, he did a few perfunctory stretches around the Pen mound, then threw very deliberately, almost nonchalantly, maybe 15-18 warmup pitches, yet all at seeming full speed from the get go. Then back into the dugout waiting for the game to start.

The two on-field, pre-game approaches at warm up could not have been more starkly different…

    • xoot said, on May 6, 2024 at 10:25 am

I saw Zito’s routine a few times. To be fair, even when his long toss partner was hundreds of feet away his throws reached the guy right at the chest. Good show. Too bad he always returned to pitch the game while he was with the Giants.

      Because Farhan deferred to Melvin.

If they were going to retain Farhan, which was the right decision, Vogt would have been a savvier appointment.

  13. alleykat69 said, on May 6, 2024 at 10:26 am

Obnoxious Mad Dog Russo in NY said Farhan would of been fired as a GM in NY are most any franchises with his lack of success. 6 years and the one year in 2021 which was a fluke. He points that the Giants don’t have any star power and no HOF players(Posey a decent chance) with a roster 2nd rate talent.Teams like the Yanks,Dodgers,Astros have those players especially LA who dominate the West for over a decade.

    • Yogi Barrister said, on May 6, 2024 at 11:29 am

2021 was NOT a fluke, just the opposite. After signing the best FA starting pitcher and a hitter with an 874 OPS (currently 933), a better case can be made that 2022 was a fluke year. Buster’s retirement and the loss of their batting coach, injuries to Cobb, Belt, and others are why they fell to 500.

      • willedav said, on May 6, 2024 at 1:40 pm

Don’t forget Posey sat out 2020 and was about as rested and healthy as could be. Plus other old ones had only played 2 months of ball instead of 6, and had one good year left in them

      • djloo27 said, on May 6, 2024 at 3:34 pm

        Respectfully disagree, SOAD.

2021 was the greatest fluke since Mathis beat Tyson…

      • Yogi Barrister said, on May 6, 2024 at 11:56 pm

“an unlikely chance occurrence, especially a surprising piece of luck.”

A boxing match is different than winning 107 games out of 162.

The Dodgers and the Giants were within a few games of each other for 6 months. The Giants went 21-6 in September.

  14. Yogi Barrister said, on May 6, 2024 at 11:41 am

Farhan’s biggest shortcoming is drafting and developing talent. That’s the only way to sustain success year to year. Here’s hoping Mason Black turns that around today.

Farhan is a day trader. Look at some of the “mistakes” he made: Dubon, Tauchman, and Joe.

OTOH consider it a franchise saving blessing he didn’t sign Judge and Correa, or trade away Harrison, Black, Doval, and Luciano for a year and third with Soto.

Great documentary last night on PBS about the all-woman rock band Fanny. The film told its story very well.

    • zumiee said, on May 6, 2024 at 12:55 pm

They were a great band that just never had that one breakthrough hit song. The band X was like that. X were great, but just never had that one song that introduced them to a bigger audience.

      • xoot said, on May 6, 2024 at 1:45 pm

In the early 80s Bay Area fans seemed to split into two sides of LA music preference: Black Flag and Henry Rollins on one side; The Blasters and X on the other. X had a long well developed run. The Knitters were great, too. Saw them their second time around at GAMH.

      • unca_chuck said, on May 6, 2024 at 2:19 pm

just saw X open for Adrian Belew and Jerry Harrison. Great show.

      • xoot said, on May 6, 2024 at 3:50 pm

Belew? Well, if you like that sort of thing. Way back went to hear Syd Straw open for Belew. We left halfway through his first song.

I guess Harrison and John Doe are old friends or something.

      • Locojuan said, on May 6, 2024 at 7:01 pm

The first show that I saw X was at the Berkeley Square, with the all-girl band the Castration Squad opening. I’ve seen X a bunch of times, there was one at the Concord Pavilion where Ray Manzarek played organ with them (he and the organ came up on a stage elevator), the Gun Club was an opener. At a show at the Old Waldorf, it was my birthday and I got to hang with DJ some and John Doe yelled out happy birthday. I still go see em when I get a chance.

      • xoot said, on May 6, 2024 at 7:10 pm

I lived one block from the Berkeley Square in the 80s, back when hookers graced the evening sidewalks around there. Went to many shows at the BSq.

I don’t see how fans in SF are going to continue to go out in large numbers and pay heavy costs to see a game with the team performing like this. Giants currently 11th in average attendance in MLB at 32K per game.

    Philly at 3rd.

    Doghairs #1 at 46K…

  31. alleykat69 said, on May 6, 2024 at 2:37 pm

Snarkk..Melvin still upset he couldn’t start Jeffries for one more shit start, so he took it out on Black. It was really stupid to shake his confidence by keeping him in there.

  32. snarkk said, on May 6, 2024 at 2:48 pm

I heard on KNBR from the River Cats announcer that Black had not thrown more than 71 pitches in a game so far this season at Sac. He threw 84 today. Melvin could have taken him out with a good feeling after 4 frames, but instead let him get hammered in the 5th, including facing Harper with 2 guys on. Not impressed with that management…

    • snarkk said, on May 6, 2024 at 3:48 pm

The Slater insanity continues. Waiting for how long for him to breakout and go on a 10 for 18 streak, I guess. His history with the Giants does not generate the respect, I guess that is what this is, that he’s getting. This shows how the talent level in the organization, especially in the OF, blows…

  36. alleykat69 said, on May 6, 2024 at 3:28 pm

Only highlight reel was the Giants stopped Alec Bohm hitting streak at 17 yeehaw 🤠

  37. snarkk said, on May 6, 2024 at 3:45 pm

Flemming just confirmed what I said about Black’s 71 pitch max at Sac so far, and said BoMel had to push him past that into the 5th to save arms in the Pen for the Rockies. Seriously? I call absolute BS on that rationale. You’re risking one of your top starter prospects to save, at most, one extra inning on the arm of some yahoo in the Pen who MIGHT be used in Denver? …

  38. unca_chuck said, on May 6, 2024 at 3:54 pm

my A’s fan friend was telling me not to expect too much. But the same old error prone shit and stupid decisions like stretch g Black to save the pen is flat dumb.

    looks like we are fucked.

but please God let me see Slater lead off one more time.

  39. Flavor said, on May 6, 2024 at 4:03 pm

We scored one run. As usual this loss had nothing to do with the pitching.

  40. Dean said, on May 6, 2024 at 4:39 pm

Farhan insulated himself last Sept with firing of Kapler. “Earned” himself extension thru 2026 to have tenure coterminous with Melvin contract. Charles Johnson strikes me as more fiscally conscious than preoccupied with won-loss record. It would take precipitous collapse for ownership to restructure front office at end of 2024 let alone during season.

Current version of Giants unwatchable. Pat the Bat likely to take fall if hitting remains on life support. Sooner rather than later message needs to be delivered that status quo unacceptable. DFA of Slater and benching of Yaz and Ahmed in favor of Ramos and Luciano would be good start.

    • Flavor said, on May 6, 2024 at 5:18 pm

what were The Bat’s qualifications any way? That he banged a lot of chicks on road trips?

  41. snarkk said, on May 6, 2024 at 4:46 pm

IF this horrible play continues into a real free fall, including more losses at home, the only thing that will generate real, material moves is a significant reduction in the turn of the turnstiles at Oracle. THAT moves the management needle…

    • Dean said, on May 6, 2024 at 5:03 pm

      Astute observation.

  42. alleykat69 said, on May 6, 2024 at 5:39 pm

Giants will definitely take a hit at the Gates coming up.

Reds first team in big deal for the weekend, then the Dodgers 3 straight weeknight games? So forget big crowds, followed by Rockies again lol 😂 I’m expecting small crowds especially how this team is just going through the motions…

  43. Paul Sorensen said, on May 6, 2024 at 5:58 pm

At the start of the offseason, Z pretty much promised the team would get younger, stronger, and faster. He got Lee, but other than that, we’re all still looking at Matos, Ramos, and Luciano as “the promised” younger stronger faster ones sitting in Sacto instead of seeing what they can do in SF. My biggest fear is, they’re not in SF because management doesn’t think they’re ready, in which case, we’re screwed. Fans would, I think, tolerate the current level of play by the younger ones, accepting the growing pains as part of their future development, with loads of possible upside. To watch the current level of play by players with no upside, and no future with the team, no, fans won’t tolerate that.
