A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Imposing Games Ahead

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on May 10, 2024

Larry Baer is such a shill. He was on KNBR yesterday celebrating “winning a series on the road”. I had to turn him off he’s such a joke.

Now we start a legit home stand. A critical home stand. The Reds are playing like shit but unlike us they have good young players. And then we get LA, lol.

Oh well, can’t hide all season in Colorado. Time to man up.

Baer is a salesperson, which is a necessary profession, I guess. I tend to be leery of salespeople. I would be a terrible salesperson, myself. I’d last about half an hour at the job. I’d likely tell the customer: “You should probably buy less stuff.”

    • zumiee said, on May 10, 2024 at 8:27 am

Baer got his start with the Giants in the sales dept., selling season tickets or advertising or both.

A classic stereotype of an annoying salesperson is Herb on the TV show WKRP in Cincinnati.

      • zumiee said, on May 10, 2024 at 8:29 am

Herb is one of those names that faded out. Probably no parents anymore are naming their sons Herbert.

Other than Elly, rest of Reds hitters haven’t done much. Dead last NL for BA at .211 and in other areas beside SBs worse on offense than Giants despite playing in small yard at home. They do K a lot as well so hoping Giants SPs Webb Black Harrison can keep them down.

Giants do get 2 of Reds better SPs, Abbott and Lodolo, both lefties Friday and Saturday, plus former A’s SP Frankie Montas Sunday. Maybe more run for Ramos while Soler out and Bailey can return Saturday if he’s OK.

  3. willedav said, on May 10, 2024 at 8:44 am

per B/R, beside De La Cruz not one Reds hitter has OPS above .750 range and none of them have more than 4 HRs. Weather heating up locally, so see what happens. Tomorrow is late start TV game 4:15 in afternoon.

  4. willedav said, on May 10, 2024 at 10:21 am

Last year Reds got hot in June and July, going 33-20 and were in first place NL Central at 59-51 by Aug 2. Finished out of playoffs at 82-80. Last year they were 5th best for runs and OB Slugging and OPS; this year they are no better than 12th for slugging and OPS and 14th OB. 5 different hitters in 2023 had OPS over .800 and had 11 different hitters w double figure HRs. so far only Elly is hitting that well.

Play the kids worked great in second half for them last year. This year not so much.

    • xoot said, on May 10, 2024 at 1:01 pm

Their young 1B was a good jolt for them last year, in the wake of Votto’s departure. That kid is out for a month or more. I’m not sure who else my reds fan friend had in mind when he said they’re dinged up.

      • willedav said, on May 10, 2024 at 1:41 pm

Yeah the local kid, right? Encarnacion-Strand, played HS ball at College Park in Pleasant Hill over by Concord. Used to make deliveries to store company owned in Pleasant Hill across street from big Sunvalley Mall.

Hoping Bailey makes it back Saturday cause tipping hitters catcher Jaxon Reetz needs to be shipped back to Sac.It’s a real dicey situation at Catcher but u don’t need one who’s helping the other team.He clearly was putting his right hand on top of his glove before every pitch, then later in the game after Winn was gone his right hand stayed behind him, somebody made him change that for sure Winn’s to blame as well he needed to be more assertive , but he’s just as green as Reetz is.Whatever he never bothered once to go to the mound to talk with Winn after all those hits in a row which Bailey would of done.Of course Bailey does a great job hiding his signals and Posey was the best, staring at every hitter in the box making sure they never picked up a sign before a pitch was thrown..

That’s great Xoot good riddance ,2 More wasted failure pickups by Farhan sent packing.Such a haul a single A player for Jeffries from Pirates about all you could expect, and nothing but a bucket full of washers/ plugged nickels for White from Brewers!

BTW does Farhan only makes deals with Pittsburgh, Milwaukee &Seattle??

    • willedav said, on May 10, 2024 at 2:49 pm

Looked up few current guys. Thairo came from Yankees, Wade Jr. from Twins, Yaz from Orioles.

Cobb was FA after Angels cut him loose.

    Schmitt is up for Ahmed.

  10. willedav said, on May 10, 2024 at 5:16 pm

Schmitt Fitz and Ramos all in starting lineup.
lee out with “foot contusion” what I read. hmmnn

Melvin said Ahmed could be out longer than 10. fwiw Luciano hitting .280 at Sac. Less power (only 1 HR) but making more contact and getting OB, and hitting ball hard.

    • xoot said, on May 10, 2024 at 5:27 pm

Lee fouled a pitch off the foot. Youd think if it’s not a broken bone he should be back soon.

      • Macdog said, on May 10, 2024 at 7:24 pm

Four batters in and he’s already missed.

      • willedav said, on May 10, 2024 at 7:28 pm

        yes, Mac.

  11. alleykat69 said, on May 10, 2024 at 6:16 pm

Ahmed got hit in the wrist in Phillies series then got his bat sawed off on an inside pitch in Colorado so I expect atleast 10 days maybe longer.Well next man up Schmitt at SS over Luciano for now he’s showing more power we shall see..

Grandson and Bailey can’t get back soon enough. Reetz has no chance.

  21. unca_chuck said, on May 10, 2024 at 7:59 pm

Fuck. It’s the gang that can’t play defense.

Dr. Strageglove in CF. Shut down innings are a thing of the past.

  22. unca_chuck said, on May 10, 2024 at 8:01 pm

So, half the team got hurt on the flight from Colo? WTF did I miss?

  23. alleykat69 said, on May 10, 2024 at 8:05 pm

Fitzgerald is such a butcher, stupid he couldn’t pick up that easy hit ball, Elly says I’ll take that base and add a SB off of overmatched Reetz. Both teams pretty comical right now.

  24. unca_chuck said, on May 10, 2024 at 8:09 pm

THey take advantage of the errors. We don;t.

  25. zumiee said, on May 10, 2024 at 8:10 pm

The game’s a bit sloppy, but it’s real baseball. Balls put in play, aggressive base-running. Not a million guys striking out. Entertaining game.

Looks like Slater hurt on that crash into the wall.

About time he checks in with an injury, that’s his history. I’m not wishing the guy injury, but maybe this is Ramos’ shot at finding a place in the LU for more than a cup of espresso…

  29. zumiee said, on May 10, 2024 at 8:30 pm

Giants/Reds are a Fox game of the week tomorrow.

  30. unca_chuck said, on May 10, 2024 at 8:34 pm

  31. alleykat69 said, on May 10, 2024 at 8:35 pm

Ramos 2 hard hits , double &single that will probably put him back on the bench tomorrow..

Toni Tenille 84 wtf? Muskrat Love the epitome of a squirrelly song🐿️🐿️🐿️🐿️ u play that song on a jukebox at a bar for a joke and Hope know one knows who played it..

    • xoot said, on May 10, 2024 at 8:41 pm

the great Willis Alan Ramsey wrote that song. I’m sure he was inspired by a short story popular around 1969 in which a woman dumps a guy because he doesn’t know what she means when she asks for muskrat love.

  32. unca_chuck said, on May 10, 2024 at 8:41 pm

I musta missed all the hard hit balls. All I’ve seen is 15 popups.

  33. zumiee said, on May 10, 2024 at 8:41 pm

    • unca_chuck said, on May 10, 2024 at 8:52 pm

But a major contributor to my headaches.

    • zumiee said, on May 10, 2024 at 8:59 pm

Webb gonna wear another desultory loss.

  36. zumiee said, on May 10, 2024 at 8:56 pm

I like hearing “25 or 6 to 4” in that commercial. I like those hit singles Chicago had in the ’70s.

    • unca_chuck said, on May 10, 2024 at 9:03 pm

Yeah, Chicago was one of my first favorite bands. One of my first concerts was the OD on the Green Chicago/Beach Boys in 1975. Terry Kath was such a great guitar player. Eddie Van Halen ripped off Eruption from Terry. Listen to Free Form Guitar if you dare.

      • xoot said, on May 10, 2024 at 9:08 pm

I always liked 25 or 6 to 4. The anguished lyrics. The hard driving beat. Then I learned it was about a rock star sitting in his Hollywood hills home a little past 3:30 am looking out at the city and whining about not being able to finish the song he was trying to write.

      • unca_chuck said, on May 10, 2024 at 9:17 pm

How long did it take you figure that out?

      • xoot said, on May 10, 2024 at 9:23 pm

the Hollywood hills part got filled in when I was a freshman in college, 69 70 ish. by a guy who despised Chicago. He had a point.

  37. unca_chuck said, on May 10, 2024 at 8:59 pm

    Hey now!

  38. zumiee said, on May 10, 2024 at 9:17 pm

Yeah, Terry Kath’s death was a huge loss. He got drunk and tried Russian roulette for some crazy reason. Great guitar player but also a great singer.

    • unca_chuck said, on May 10, 2024 at 9:18 pm

Yeah, I lost interest in the Peter Cetera version of Chicago. Story was Kath thought the gun was empty when he took out the clip. There was one in the chamber.

    • Lurker John said, on May 10, 2024 at 9:59 pm

It wasn’t Russian roulette. Like Chuck said, he accidentally shot himself with a semi-automatic pistol he thought was unloaded. The one in the pipe got him. Sad ending to a great talent. Russian roulette is done with a revolver.

  39. zumiee said, on May 10, 2024 at 9:21 pm

I’m a Giants fan, but the Reds have kind of a fun team.

    • unca_chuck said, on May 10, 2024 at 9:22 pm

We are the antithesis of fun. At least the games end faster now.

  40. unca_chuck said, on May 10, 2024 at 9:21 pm

    Lee woulda made that play.

  41. Macdog said, on May 10, 2024 at 9:26 pm

  42. Locojuan said, on May 10, 2024 at 9:28 pm

I’m not sure if I just don’t like Fitzgerald or if I just don’t like the Giants trying to have the kid learn 5 or 6 positions at the MLB level.

    • Lurker John said, on May 10, 2024 at 10:00 pm

  47. unca_chuck said, on May 10, 2024 at 9:48 pm

yay we ended the Reds 8 game losing streak!

  48. willedav said, on May 11, 2024 at 7:46 am

Yes the team that went 0-6 on homestand and scored 11 runs total at Small park got 9 hits and 4 BBs off Giants. Webb’s line looks good but in the first 4 innings he gave up 9 baserunners, 7 hits and 2 BBs and 3 runs.

It’s like he turned into late career Tom glavine, throwing soft stuff on outside corner fishing for strikes. Too in love w changeup and Reds figured him out just like Phils and Boston did. Maybe having Bailey behind plate makes a difference, but he’s the one w ball in his hand.

  49. Macdog said, on May 11, 2024 at 7:49 am

Webb describes Giants’ recent play as “dogshit.” As numerous fans on Twitter pointed out, Kap got fired after Webb’s brutal comments late last year.

    • willedav said, on May 11, 2024 at 8:00 am

Yes Mac, and he was yapping about clubhouse then too.

Time to look in the mirror and stfu. 2 outings before last night he gave up 8 earned in 7.2 and 16 hits/5 BBs.

  50. willedav said, on May 11, 2024 at 7:54 am

Advanced stats off Webb: Last year BA .248 this year .284. OB .280/.332. OPS .653/.702. Time to readjust.

  51. Winder said, on May 11, 2024 at 8:15 am

All my hopes from ST are totally dashed and I don’t see how this team is gonna get better as is. I don’t have that many fingers to point.

  52. unca_chuck said, on May 11, 2024 at 9:31 am

Webb ain’t the problem here. I’d be pissed if I was him as well. These guys can’t hit their way out of a fog bank. They wasted time with Jeffries and are still wasting time with Slater. Lee is the only player on a long-term deal that is even remotely exciting. The rest are middling guys who might be something as complementary role players, but can’t drive the bus.

Farhan has drafted nothing but shit for 6 years running. When he said ‘reset’ last year after jettisoning Kapler, even he admitted he had done little to improve the team.

So here we are in the throes of another bland season of unexciting baseball. Chapman and Soler have proven to be washed up just at the wrong time. Conforto is at least doing something. Fucking Mitch Haniger would be one of our top guys with his 5 HRs and 20 RBI. And of course half the team gets hurt between Colo and SF. Ramos should be playing every day. Slater should be relegated to late inning defensive replacement once he unscrambles his head. Fitzgerald is an amazingly bad defender no matter where they put him. The Wilbur train seems to have run out of steam as well. Oh well. At least we’ll stay ahead of Colo.
