A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Second Half Sucking

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 20, 2024

Had a great time hanging with San Dawg. I see the Giants lost again. Worried there won’t be much to look forward to (baseball wise) when I get back from vacation on the 30th.

Some of you guys might remember this great Cody Ross story from the magical 2010 season.

My buddy bigdog sent this photo to me yesterday, he and his fam went to the game last night. That’s Clayton on the right, all grown up.

And/or today too at Del Mar, Loo.

Missed last night due to basketball, but watching lowlights btw umps and general haunting of Giants at Coors by ghosts of baseball gods confirmed It was time better spent.

Great story from 2010 Flav, pics included, and great read of posts from those around at that time. Cool your buddies got to go see another ballgame so many years later.

Ray last night in Sac: 5.1 innings 1 hit 2 BBs 7 Ks 0 runs 78 pitches. Luciano 2-4 drove in 2 in 5-1 W. Weather listed at 102, for night game in Sacramento.

btw thanks to Mac for mentioning Nats AAA minor leaguer Darren Baker. Looked up IL stats…BA .278 OPS .678 but almost no power (0 HRs/327 ABs) in second year there. Does have 30 SBs though.

Caught some of Bill Laskey on postgame KNBR…hmmnn? Hasn’t pitched since mid 80s and ended career in pen.

Great post. 2010 was such a magical year for the Giants and every time I think about it I am still grateful that I was able to observe pretty much the whole thing. Best year for SF Giants baseball ever.

An overweight ump cost the Giants two runs by not being able to get out of the way of the ball. It should have been a run-scoring double, but became an out instead. Kind of sums up the Giants’ season so far.

      • zumiee's avatar zumiee said, on July 20, 2024 at 5:01 pm

It would have been 5-0, with one out and a runner on second. The game could have played out completely differently.

These last couple months become Z’s biggest test. Or, test results. I’ve not much agreed with his moves or approaches over the years, but suddenly all those Cy-like pitchers who’ve been missing in a season-long mist will be appearing. Maybe. And if it actually goes as Z saw it, maybe even just half of it – Snell finally on track, Ray coming out guns a-blazin’, maybe Cobb (would rather see Birdsong, kid looks good) – big ‘if’ but if that unfolds as Z saw it, combined with a resurgent consistent Harrison and of course Webb will be fine, that would be a fun pitching rotation to watch the rest of the way. Might be more effective and realistic than hoping the offense improves much…

Not a stretch a la Flavor “prediction,” but I GUARANTEE THAT THE GIANTS WILL WIN TODAY, as they are going against Rockies LHP Ryan Feltner (1-9, 5.36 ERA) whom will be looking to snap an eight-game losing streak when he takes the mound in Sunday’s series finale against the Giants, who are scheduled to start RHP Birdsong (1-0, 3.72 ERA).

    ‘Nuff said.

5 shutout innings for Cobb in Sac last night. 2 hits 1 BB 60 pitches. Luciano Schmitt and McCray (2) all homered last night in 6-3 W.

Hasn’t played much but getting harder to see potential of Matos. He’s been up 140 times with 4 doubles 4 HRs and 4 walks, 0 SBs. He doesn’t get on base (OB .241), or run or hit for power…I get Yaz doesn’t pass “boring” mark for lot of fans, but I don’t find much exciting about watching Matos hit and OF play isn’t so great either.

  29. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 21, 2024 at 9:52 am

Agree somewhat with what you’re saying Willie. Me? I would stick with Matos until the end of the season and then dump the SOB if he doesn’t get it, and I don’t mean a return to the minors. Trade him – if someone will take him; or, put him on waivers, after we’re assured we have a decent back up to call up whom can play the fucking game.

Regarding Yaz, get rid of him too, either by the close of the mid-season trade deadline or in the off season. This shit where Slater and other mediocre players are able to “hang on” and create an 8 year career has to stop.

Hmmnn, that’s interesting (Snell). Not sure I understand how his option for next year works but wondering if Hal would spring for him, or what return would be. Snell will pitch vs. LA, right?

As for Yaz…he’s having an above average year at plate (.764 OPS) in down season for hitters all around. I find it hard to believe Giants would get that kind of production out of any other OF not named Ramos. But to each his own.

  31. willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 21, 2024 at 11:28 am

I don’t think anyone here wanted Joc back, but look at what he has put up this season: .274/,375/.496 for .871 OPS, similar to 2022 with Giants. Hasn’t played OF at all for AZ.

with more WC teams now above .500–NY STL AZ SD PIT, if Giants can’t get back near there and Z is unable to survive after this year, one of big reasons has to be Soler debacle as DH. He’s same age as Joc (32) but he’s become so mind numbingly awful to watch at plate. Makes about same $$ ($14 mil) but he’s got 3 year deal. If Giants were able to trade him they’d surely have to take on equally bad contract or help pay him off.

as full time DH it limits chance for Melvin to move different position players in/out of there to get them some ABs or PH for them late game. Unless things pick up for him in last 60 games, just a move that didn’t pan out.

  32. djloo27's avatar djloo27 said, on July 21, 2024 at 11:43 am

I think Posey is guaranteed to get into the HOF after Joe Mauer got in. Same for Munson. Particularly since WAR was essentially the same for Posey and Mauer playing catcher (i.e., the latter played only 10 years as catcher, with the rest of his WAR accumulated while playing 1st base and DH).

  50. willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 21, 2024 at 5:18 pm

Leyland spent 11 years with Pirates yet first season with Marlins in 1997 was when he won only World Series. Moises Alou was on that team…was that the only time any of the Alous ever won WS? Just asking.

If Farhan sends Birdie down, that will be crazy.

Birdie is killin’ it. His hook is devastating. The kid looks like he’s 16, but doesn’t pitch like he’s in high school. Giants look like they’ve got something here…

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 21, 2024 at 5:59 pm

I don’t know snarkk . . . Giants starting pitching had the fewest innings in baseball last year and have done so again this year (up to this point). Again, what you said a couple of weeks ago still stands, we are wearing out our relievers. For example, look at Hicks who is transitioning to a starter, but already has 95 innings pitched and sporting a 10.38 ERA over the last couple of games.

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 21, 2024 at 6:01 pm

My point is that Cobb, Ray and Snell better be the real deal in the last 1/3 of the season (nod of the head to Loo pointing out that we are way beyond the 1/2 point).

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on July 21, 2024 at 6:41 pm

It’s not about sending him down, it’s how many more innings they allow him to work at all. With 60 games left that’s 12 more starts through rotation and if he started them all that would be big increase over workload from 2023.

Same with Harrison. Last season he pitched 67 innings minors/34 with Giants. Right now he’s already at 91. Typically in recent past Giants did not have their minor league pitchers increase innings pitched more than 10% from one season to next. Under Putila as GM they have been more aggressive at promoting players quickly from one level to another.

Maybe with both these guys they will be more aggressive given their success.

  52. Paul Sorensen's avatar Paul Sorensen said, on July 21, 2024 at 6:11 pm

The main thing of interest for me for August/September is Snell/Webb/Ray/Harrison/Birdie. That could be a very fun rotation to watch the rest of the way.

  53. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on July 21, 2024 at 6:37 pm

Yep that’s my starting 5 P/A., If you can talk to your baseball and yourself aka Fydrich and it responds to you your in the Giants rotation would be foolish to pull him and waste starts with Cobb ( who’s done, don’t waste the starts for sure).Hicks can work in pen and get his velo up he could still produce good results in that role..

So starting 5 without blow up at trade deadline..

Webb,Snell,Birdsong,Harrison &Ray and roll with it.And if you needs an opener Hicks on the cornhold duo ,Miller, Highway to Hjelle can do that.
