A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Washington, Padres, Tampa

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on August 8, 2025

Honestly, this homestand scares me. Forget for a min we lost 6 straight in the last one. Washington has one of the worst pitching staffs in the league. Why do they scare me? We should smash those arms all over the yard. But still……Padres are obviously going to be tough. And Tampa is just one of those teams that always plays hard as fuck no matter what their record is.

Pads are hot. All about them at this point.

The Giants will just Jeckyll and Hyde their way through the rest of the season I’m afraid.

Hot and cold running .500 ball.

Beginning today, the 3 NL WC teams are:

    Cubs: 48 Losses

    Padres: 51 Losses

    Mets: 52 Losses

    _______________________

Still in the hunt, I guess:

    Reds: 56 Losses

    Giants: 57 Losses

    Cards: 58 Losses

    Marlins: 58 Losses

    DBacks: 61 Losses

You mean, if the season ended today, the Cubs, Padres, and Mets would be in the playoffs?

I think Blade summarized it perfectly yesterday. Regardless of what transpires the next two months, Posey has righted a floundering ship and given it direction and purpose. Posey has built a foundation and now needs to deftly acquire more pieces to fill holes in the roster. I am optimistic about the Giants future but believe it will take time.

I also agree with Chuck this morning who said the Giants will likely Jekyl & Hyde their way to a .500 season. But if the Giants want to prove their future is now, then go out and deliver a 6-3 homestand and stay within striking distance of Mets and/or Padres. But if their future is 2026/2027/2028 I’m OK as long as Posey and Minisian stick to plan and strengthen roster.

Thanks Dean . . . Quite impressed with Buster. When he was hired, I did NOT think he would be as independent (or perhaps, I should say “true to himself”) as he has shown himself to be. A head nod to ownership for recognizing that Buster is no less competitive in the board room as he was on the field. His authenticity really stands out!

Devers has played in 116 games. Giants have played in 115. Adames and Ramos are near at 114 and 113. I think they need the occasional rest day.

  7. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 8, 2025 at 10:53 am

Is 14 games over .500 too high a hill? 88 wins looks like it might be the path into the playoffs.

    That’s a 30-17 clip.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on August 8, 2025 at 11:21 am

Yep. I said days ago that the Giants had to play .630 ball at that time to get to 88-89, which would put them likely in a WC, probably the last berth. There is no way in hell without a very weird convergence of events in their favor, that they can play that level of ball the rest of the season. Another way to put it, MLB.com has Giants at under 10% shot at the WC. My hope for that the rest of the season is they find out more about their AAA/AAAA players so they can use that info for definitive off season moves. With Encarnacion out, I really want to see that ex-Met Gilbert fellow come up and try the OF. We’ve seen Matos, why let him flail more with the big club. Gilbert is left-handed hitter, so what? Bring him up…

25-22 .532 gets the Mets to 88. Definitely want to see the guys they heisted for Tyler up here ASAP. I have high hopes for that trade…

Buster Posey WAR watch: 2.8 through 115 games

Gage, Lucchesi, and Butto account for nearly half of that total. Devers and Verlander have added nothing, and Adames is on pace for a modest 2.3 total, the lowest mark of his career playing a full season.

Eldridge 0-4 with 4 Ks last night in Sacramento. Gilbert 1-2 double 2 BBs and steal, playing RF.

Mets, losers of 8 of last 10, at Brewers this weekend. Any luck and Giants could pick up couple more games in all important L column.

  13. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 said, on August 8, 2025 at 3:06 pm

Agree on that James, but I don’t see why that 26 man roster can’t be improved.

Rocket Man Seymour 5Bombs in 10 innings sucks bigtime, same with Beck he’s constantly getting hammered.McCray’s been terrible as well.

Figuring that Jerar is heading to DL ( hammy) I’m hoping they bring up Gilbert. Also the catcher Rodriguez who hits .300 every level, definitely an upgrade over Kinzer but we all know the Giants probably won’t do that.

Also RH Reliever Braxton Roxby who they got for Taylor Rodgers in the Giants/Reds trade has been lights out for Sac, and K’sa ton of hitters ( 30 IP 56 K’d) and gives zip homers compared to Seymour launch shots..

What’s weird is Gilbert,Rodriguez &Roxby are all a no on the 40 man roster? So moves would have to be made to call these players up?

McDonald has been hit pretty hard more hits than IP, high whip? but who knows? Just no more rejects of Hjelle,Black,Beck, some outfielders as well, Meckler,Johnson, etc..

Though in his final hurrah possible may be Luciano gets a final look with his 20 HR’s in AAA leading the minor league team even over Eldridge..

  14. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck said, on August 8, 2025 at 3:55 pm

Yeah, it’s hard to justify rolling Seymour Bombsaway out there when we can bring up one of the new guys. As for anyone else with a pulse, do it.

    • willedav's avatar willedav said, on August 8, 2025 at 4:04 pm

Yes he is per mlb.com lineup. In RF batting 9th (aka second leadoff). Smith DH at cleanup btw Adames and Chapman. Lee 6th ahead of Schmitt and Bailey.

I wonder what he’s doing these days. He just had the wrong gaff at the wrong time. Another broadcaster did the same thing a few years later, and survived it. Timing is very important

Like you said Loco – “CF fence, no prob for Devers.”

Olney said this BS (albeit, he did say “too early to draw conclusions”) . . . “When Rafael Devers was at his best with the Red Sox, his swing was perfect for Fenway Park, where line drives and fly balls to left and left-center field would often find the Green Monster, or clear it. Oracle Park is very different, with its vast space in that part of the park. While it’s way too soon to draw conclusions, Devers is slashing .160/.289/.280 in his new home park.”
