Great Start To This Homey
https://x.com/JonHeyman/status/1953972088777375940
that one caught me off guard a bit. I even looked it up. Sure enough, it’s true.
What a refreshing game to watch. We win at home against a terrible team. I’m sorry I ever took it for granted.
Well when you come home and have lost 8 straight games there it’s easy to be a little pessimistic!Hey nice work by the openers Gage for 1 but especially the Tenginator 5 strong on 64 pitches, definitely a different pitcher then last years callup, he’s throwing strikes seems to be in better shape and the the rest of the pen kept the shutout going.
Devers&Schmitt big HR’s, Good Defense,Especially Gilbert&Devers( who knew?) Real nice catch by Gilbert on a ball down the line which would of been fair, and for his 1st game in that canyon in RF he looked very comfortable, and he’s fast, hopefully gets some steals coming up..
Heyman is a doofus. Marlins BA is 2 points lower than Dodgers. OPS (where LA MIL and CHI also lead) has lot more to do with how many runs a team scores than BA. Other factors do go into what makes a winning team. DBax hit the F out of the ball, and suck.
MLB.com says it was 65 degrees at O last night, and Bay Area experiencing heat wave this week. O plays lot different in daytime especially in unusually warm temps like today/tomorrow will be.
Reds Mets Padres all lost yesterday–great day for baseball!
The Marlins are 13-7 in the second half. In July alone they were 15-10. They have some very good hitters. You should follow more than just 1 team to keep up with what’s going on in the rest of the league.
They are really good and fun team to watch, like when I was at game with SD. They pounded Giants that day and whipped Yanks 3 straight right? But they’re not on dodgers level despite nice BA is all I’m saying. I’m about oldest fart here, but BA isn’t my thing anymore.
Agree. one of Heyman’s hired hands noticed the coincidence and he decided to make a “story” out of it.
Gilbert covered RF easily, recognized one drive over his head on the fly and backpedaled to play it high off the wall beautifully, made one very tough diving catch down the line and bounced up confidently, unscathed. (That diving play reminded me of the one on which Jerar broke his hand in ST.) His throws to the IF were good. The kid can play the OF.
His ABs weren’t terrible. Last one, he swung at, and missed, a 3-0 pitch. And then he smiled at the dugout. He certainly believes he’s ready.
Kruk and kuip initially said that Gilbert misplayed the ball off the wall. Kuip thought he could’ve had it. Kruk agreed, saying that it hit the bottom of the wall. Replay showed that it hit more than halfway up the wall, way out of reach. “It was a good play,” mumbled Kuip.
I think they’re both half blind now.
Kuip has been phoning it in for a couple of years now. Regularly messes up names of players, searches for descriptions even more than Miller…
Fun facts: JHLee leads the team in doubles and triples, and his slugging percentage of 410 is a tick higher than Adames’. His extra base hits come from pulling the ball. He’ll be worth his contract if a few more of those low velocity opposite field groundballs and flares start falling in, and he starts taking greater advantage of his ability to make contact by getting to deeper counts and drawing more walks. But a big percentage of his value comes from those pull side XBHs.
Miracle stat of the season: Schmitt’s K % is at 22%, around league average.
Well if the season ended today it would be🤬😡🤬
I’ll bet there will be less volatility in Casey’s K% stats over the rest of the year than there is in the WC standings 🙂
Looking at the standings just now, I should probably change that to a wimpier “hope” . . . .
It’s easy to lose context when team isn’t going well. One cool thing about Athletic is you can check in on beat writers and read through comments from every other team, in any sport. Looking at stories from Yanks and Mets lately after trades was very interesting. Padres too. I don’t think I saw one good comment about Boone at all. Mets, for all the $$ spent on FAs and with lineup of Soto Alonso Lindor, have dropped 9 of 10.
If you divided ABs by XBHs, Lee and Chapman top SF, about 1 XBH per 10 ABs. Devers Schmitt 1 per 11.
Wood is now 1 per every 9 ABs. Alonso 1 per 8.
Whisenhunt needs to add a couple mph in the off season, like Teng did. This 92 with precision shit isn’t going to cut it.
Schmidt might be adjusting well and be a decent to good player. Athletic article says his pitches per AB have risen every month from 3.1 to now 4.1. He is laying off more bad pitches.
Hopefully Devers will get back to his level of AB’s for Xtras. 1/8.5
national writers from Athletic Re which sellers make the playoffs. 2/4 said giants. “Devers finally starting to hit, SF has a combo of easiest schedule with 7 games left with the Pads. Relievers are weird and possible if not likely the relievers will pitch as well as Rogers / Doval down the stretch..
The curse of Flavor’s faves coming back to hurt SF continues.
CW catching up with CS.
they’ve pulled the curtain back on the Wiz.
A beautiful Yaz liner foul into the corner before the K.
Augh. need some hits!!!
Finally touch the worst pitching staff in the league. This offense can be so infuriating
This game looks like about what — 50 others this season with Giants doing nothing at the plate, with a good number of K’s and guys swinging for the fences instead of contact with RISP…
Devers got tired of being walked.
Belt liked ball down low like Devers does and could hit them out to CF too. 29 HRs in 2021.
Giants today experiencing the downside of young pitchers. Whisenhunt definitely needs ASAP to get a third pitch he can reliably use, and get better control. His slider isn’t there yet. The fastball+changeup combo isn’t going to work well with every team clued in on the changeup. Nats teed off on him with 7-8 balls 105+ today, overall so far 11 Nats batters hitting shots 103+ on Wiz and Seymour…
Apparently Doval blew a lead again for the Yanks today, although they ended up winning. May the Yanks and their fans thoroughly enjoy Doval’s meltdowns and brain farts. Maybe Buster DID get over on Cashman in that trade…
Getting anything for Doval was a win. Much like the Mellonhead deal.
Anybody know if Knizner or whatever his name is catching for the Giants — is he calling pitches himself or is he getting help from the bench? I’m wondering if some of these pitch calls for advantageous 0-2 or 1-2 counts that get clobbered are not all the young pitchers’ fault…
According to Fleming, fwiw, the Nats have clobbered the ball so hard today into the top of the 8th, their “expected batting average” so far in today’s game is .360, whereas the Giants is .206…
SF has had 4 PAs with RISP today. Devers walked. Adames K’d on a change up. Lee grounded out sharply to the opposite field. Schmitt hit a drive to RF.
Gilbert may not get many more chances to show that he can hit.
If he can’t hit, he’ll fit right in to the Giants roster…
If he can’t hit, he’ll fit right in to the Giants roster. At least it looks like he brings a good glove…
I think it’s already established that he doesn’t do much against lefties.
Chapman 0-4 today with 2 Ks. Season BA now .229.
If this dude didn’t have a great glove, I’d be down with blade and say get rid of him. Put Schmitt at 3rd, his glove there could develop into something like Chapman, and he looks to be a Chapman type hitting clone, at about 1/50 the cost over the next few years. Yeah, Chapman is a career .240 or whatever, but he’s way to streaky and just swings away all the time, doesn’t seem to often try to just make contact situationally…
Good Lord — Giants genuflected to that guy like the second coming of Seaver or something. Kuip, fwiw, just admitted he never heard of him before today. 3-6 against the league, but hell, shut down the Giants ? –no problem. Giants now 29-28 at home, dismal. Baseball reference had them projected at 82 wins before today’s loss. Hope is all that’s left for more than 2 runs tomorrow…
Mariano Rivera tore an achilles in Yankees Old Timers game…
Chappie has no clue. For a guy who has played as long as he has is pretty terrible. Pretty infuriating so many guys idea of what to do is just swing wildly at everything.
Burrell isn’t making things better so he should be let go. If only to hear a different point of view.
Might go down as worst contract in team history. At least we got one good season and PS out of Zito…
Chapman struggles against fastballs, particularly high velocity ones. Consequently, it will get worse, as he’s no spring chicken (33 next season).
He’s had 4000 plate appearances in his career. He is what he is and there’s not a hitting coach on the planet that can help him. Might sound funny, but he’s actually striking out at lower pct (24) and walking more (13) than at almost any point in his career, including 2019 in Oakland when he hit 36 HRs.
2024-5 are his best seasons for OPS (.790 and .776) since 2019 and 2020, during juiced ball era-better than 2021 final year with A’s (.716) and 2 following with Toronto (.750s). The leopard is not changing his spots.
That .790 OPS by Chapman and .792 from Ramos led Giants last year except for .800 one by Fitz in smaller sample size of 340 ABs. We all know where Fitz is now.
Ramos this year has seen HR numbers go down (4.1 % to 2.8) but is striking out less often (23% vs. 26) and walking slightly more (8% vs. 7) than last season. He’s picked up OBP but slugging is down 50 points. He’ll turn 26 first week of September and hopefully has one more hot streak left in him this season.
Addendum to Chapman . . . Matt is a smart player. If he’s is able to resolve his issues against upstairs fastballs (particularly 4 seamers with a lot of movement); and, regain his ability to pull the ball in the air, then he’ll once again be the best third baseman in MLB. That being said, it’s not like I am the only one whom is frustrated with his play. This is what I found on the internet, insofar as him versus other 3rd baseman in the MLB for this season:
He’s also about 100 ABs shy of a full season because of the injury. He’d undoubtedly lead the Giants in that category if he’d played as much as Adames.
What I intended to say was lead them in HRs …
That just shows how little power this team has.
I look forward to that Golden Age when we have a 3rd baseman who regularly hits more than 25 bombs a year at Oracle.
Doesn’t chase? This is bullshit. Chapman regularly strikes out about 150-180 times a year. And he sure ain’t hitting enough bombs or driving in runs to justify these middling to poor numbers.
Yeah, Loo this deal looks bad.
One season over .250 and 2 over .240. I could give a shit if he gets walks. Like Belt and 1st base, 3rd base you are supposed to be driving in runs not taking walks.
I thought Belt was supposed to be bunting for hits to get on base like, you know, when you take a walk.
James, I think most of that talk was during the shift craze…
Actually, Chuck and I had an exchange about it here recently.
Bunting moves runners and can actually drive them in.
But bunting for a hit with RISP isn’t usually recommended, right? With no one on or a runner on first, the walk has the same effect almost every time.
Here’s Chapman’s chart against 96+ mph pitches:

Select PA result to see how he does.
So much for visuals. I couldn’t find a fucking dot that was a hit.
I’m color blind, so it’s a struggle. He’s got a few in there.
His contract fuckin sucks and so does he!!!
hehehe . . . 🙂
The contract really sucks because of the no trade clause. Who negotiated that? Chapman’s a good player who’s incredibly frustrating to watch when he’s missing fastballs – not just the high velocity stuff, which he actually does ok against overall. He’s not different from a lot of other good players in that regard.
Turns 32 in April.
Here’s a few things he’s done exactly once in his career:
Batted over .249
Drove in over 80 runs
Hit over 30 HRs
Had over 150 hits
Hit more than 3 triples
Stole over 4 bases
Made an All-Star team
Here’s something he’s done every year:
Had a K to BB ratio over 2:1
Eventual Flap nickname: Crappy
that RBI stat is wild…..
But Chapman is not the problem. Not now anyway. And he’s won a bunch of games for us this year by himself with his bat and his glove.
He’s our fucking cleanup hitter.
If the ’71 Giants were the 2025 Giants, McCovey would be leading off and Speier would hit cleanup…
Bingo!
Chapman’s averaged 500 ABs a year, and 70 RBI, 80 runs scored. His career OPS is 789, not 889.
Wait, I thought we signed an RBI guy in Adames, someone whose nose for driving in runs means way more than the fact he’s basically in the same class of hitter as Chapman. What happened to Mr. 112 RBI?
Willie Mays only drove in 61 runs in 1971, despite a 957 OPS and 280 BA w RISP! How the hell did he manage that?
112 walks was a factor. That was an amazing amount of walks for the older Mays.
Shouldn’t be looking for walks in RBI situations. Shameful.
There were so few games on TV in those days, it’s hard for me to remember anything from that season. The playoff loss to the Pirates sticks in the memory.
The clincher against the Pads was the first Giants game I ever listened to. AFN.
OPS is a bs stat.
Getting tired picking cherries?
OK, I’ll bite, Chapman is better than Mays. You got me.
The Mariners catcher hit his 44th HR tonight. That’s prime-years Johnny Bench stuff.
I was shocked at the news of Sandberg’s passing. I didn’t know he had been ill.
