A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Biggest Win of the Year….

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on June 5, 2010

I could be wrong about this, but by my count that was our 13th comeback win of the year. And when you come back from 4 down on the road that’s not worth one win that’s worth like 5 or 6. When you PROVE to your collective self that you can do something it’s likely that you will end up doing it again. Last year, d0wn 4 was a death sentence. Now? Hey, from here on out if if they get 4 down they’ll just strap those gloves on a little tighter and go to work……

And to think, the Giants pulled off this win without one of Krukow’s keys to the game coming to fruition: “Stay HOT Rowand”–baha, that *key* had me chuckling all night…….

Two teams intersecting . . . and then going in opposite directions, i.e., the Giants won their sixth in eight games; the Pirates dropped their sixth in eight.

    Go Giants!

With the Giants picking up Burrell’s contract from Fresno, what do “inquiring minds” (or Flappers . . . LOL) think will happen to Bowker, now that he has been optioned to Fresno following Wednesday’s game?

Choices – End of his baseball career, but catalyst for new career in used car sales; Temporary setback, where after extensive exercise regimen and tearing up Triple A pitching, he is called back to the “big show” (chime in Rocky soundtrack); or . . . (fill in blank).

They’ll trade him, and he’ll do well, just like Fred…

Bowker will eventually end up with another team and go the way of Lewis or Frandsen – players that did not meet their potential here but found it elsewhere.

  4. willied's avatar willied said, on June 5, 2010 at 8:51 am

Blade, if he shows some pop in AAA like before, he could be part of a trade to another team willing to take a flyer on the guy. He’s probably no worse than the corner guys Pirates have right now With Nate only getting D replacement PT these days, he could still come back up if the guy needs to go on the DL for whatever is bothering him. The guys we liked out of ST aren’t lighting up Richmond either; at least this way he gets to play.

Whiteside…at .293 there is no way SF can dump the guy, and now with 4 HRs that’s more than Molina, in a handful of ABs. Hard to fucking believe. Is this enough to shove Benjie further down the bench, or out the door (with Posey at C)?
As the “Prez”, he shares a nickname with the great tenor sax man Lester Young, sweet toned player out of the Basie era, who reportedly is responsible for giving Billie Holliday the nickname “Lady Day”. I cannot think of two more divergent individuals that share the same moniker.

It’s a mite early to be saying anybody “met their potential” elsewhere, PGFuck. As to Bowker, I wouldn’t think he’ll be going to another team unless he was part of a package in trade. He does have some pop and could be in the picture next year at least in a reserve role. He’s a victim this year in that, as Bochy said, this isn’t a test year-they are going for the post season. Burrell gves them the added dimenson of a power RH bat late and in selected starts.

  6. willied's avatar willied said, on June 5, 2010 at 9:02 am

Pit started Bobby Crosby at 1B yesterday, batting 5th in the order (sign of a team that has already given up)…and people complain about bochy’s lineups. Bowker can hit better than that, and he could probably plant one where Huff did once in a while.
I couldn’t get over the one Uribe hit to dead CF.
AZ with a nice comeback W last night vs. Rox. Their pen threw 3 shutout innings at home, Rox gave up 8 hits and 4 runs in 4, final two in the ninth off Corpas. And the Rox remain 4th.

It sure would be nice to get hot on this road trip with some badly needed power. Last night showed how a little pop can pickup everyone. What a difference!

    Is Aaron Rowand still hot?

  9. Michael's avatar Michael said, on June 5, 2010 at 9:34 am

Henry talked about this the other day. Great win, half a dozen heroes, and his mailbox is all about Aaron Fucking Rowand. I’m imagining Sanchez getting 26 of 27 outs toward a perfect game, Ump blows the call… finishes with a one hitter. The fans go crazy. At the ump? Nah, Rowand was 0 for 4…

  10. Del Mar Dennis's avatar delmardennis said, on June 5, 2010 at 9:40 am

I’ll take the lack of responses as a “no.” Speaking of others who aren’t “hot,” how ’bout the entire NL as a whole. Here we sit on June 5th, and its leading hitter (Prado) is only at .321 Is the NL pitching that more dominant over its counterpart?

  11. Michael's avatar Michael said, on June 5, 2010 at 9:49 am

Wouldn’t be the worst night to give Burrell a start. It’s another lefty and he’s 4 for 13 with a HR against Maholm. Question is: for who? Kinda scary to have him and Huff in the OF, and Aubrey has to be in. If Huff is at first, would they sit Molina another game and put Buster back there? I doubt it. So it’s a toughie.

Mea Culpa. Mea Culpa Mea Ultime Maxima Culpa. I didn’t believe. I didn’t believe. Okay, so it was the bottom of the 2nd and i had switched over from “mail” to the Yahoo game posting and the Pirates had plated three with a runner on 2nd and one out; this after Pablo and Huff had gone GDP in the first two SF plate appearances. So being a bit beat from the day, i shut down the computer and hit the bed with a book.

Little did i know that Drrrrty is a grown-up ML pitcher now and he didn’t let a little thing like a four-run deficit after two prevent him from shutting down the Pirates for the rest of his stint. Not like last season.

Little did i know that Posey would atone for his two-base, ultimately 4-run error and score on Rowand’s GDP in the fifth and later as the rally-point for one of the 2-run Taters.

Little did i know that Secret Weapon El Presidente would double up Molina’s HR total with a 12-pitch AB shocker of his own into the seats.

Little did i know that Huff the Magic Dragon would seat a two-run shot for his first road HR of the year and

Little did i know that Huff’s magic would promptly get echoed with a second double-run moonshot by OOOOO ree Bay.

Little did i know, that though held hitless for the night, like Pablo and Rowand, Andres Torres would make a highlight-reel catch on Doumit’s drive in the 9th.

Little did I know that Santiago Casilla would stifle a Buc’s rally and that Guillermo Mota would once more smother an opponent.

Little did i know that once again Brian Wilson would close out the game in style.

Goes to show a couple things: This team, with its sparkplugging Buster Posey and Freddy Sanchez, are not the “can’t come back from behind” guys of last year and: Even as an Uber-Polly i knew very little about the winning character that this team is developing ~ even in one of those previously lethal road-games where they were down four-zip by the second inning.

Well, during the rare summer days on Mars, the surface temperature can reach 80 F. Kruk must think Rowand uses his timeshare rental during those few brief moments in time. 🙂

Bengie’s gonna play tonight, so the question is do we sacrifice defense with an OF Burrell, Torres and Huff for more offense, or go with the status of Huff, Rowand and Torres. I say with Wellemeyer on the mound, we need all the offense we can get. So, tell “Mr. Mars” he can visit Uranus for the evening.

  17. stumillersgust's avatar stumillersgust said, on June 5, 2010 at 11:18 am

Molina will play tonight and I expect Posey will get his first start behind the dish tomorrow. Even though Wellemeyer is a GB pitcher, you can’t play Huff and Burrell in the OF together … Torres isn’t that fast.
Huff might get the night off, but I don’t see how Rowand sits. Bochy use the remake of the A-Team on Sunday: Torres(CF), Sanchez(2B), Sandoval(3B), Huff(1B), Uribe(SS), Posey(C), Burrell(LF), Schierholtz(RF), Lincecum(P)

  18. macdog's avatar macdog said, on June 5, 2010 at 11:39 am

Well, Rowand did get the first run in last night, so it was a productive 2 outs.

  19. Michael's avatar Michael said, on June 5, 2010 at 11:47 am

I don’t see Molina sitting 2 of the 3 games. I think he’ll play both. And how do you sit Huff? We could just see the same LU we have been seeing. And why the fuck not? They’ve won 7 of 10. So it’s Posey, Sanchez, Uribe, Panda in the infield. Huff, Rowand, Torres L-R in the OF. Bengie in the squat. Same tomorrow and we see Burrell a couple games in Cincy where he’s hit way better than he has in Pittsburgh. The squeeze comes when Rent is back, and/or DeRosa… I think the end for Molina as the regular catcher is then.

  20. stumillersgust's avatar stumillersgust said, on June 5, 2010 at 12:16 pm

I hope Molina doesn’t catch tomorrow, especially if there are any rain delays tonight. You don’t sit Huff, you play him everyday in left, unless Posey is catching or getting a day off. Burrell is going to be a PH mostly and a Grizzly if DeRosa returns.

Anyway, Bengie will catch both games unless the move to Posey begins tomorrow. I don’t have a problem with that, it needs to start happening. But he won’t be sitting for Eli tomorrow.
As to Burrell, it is not possible to say he’s be sent down if DeRosa returns. For one, he would be released, not optioned. He ain’t going back to Fresno. He’s in up here or he’s out looking for another team. Book that, Stu.
But he may not go regardless. Ishikawa, Whitey, and Molina are all guys who could go. Downs will go when Rent is back.

I still remember the play that caused Bochy to yank Bonds. It was a routine fly to left center, almost directly at Bonds. He saw it but never made a move to the ball. Roberts raced over from centerfield and dropped it after a diving effort… as Barry watched.

Burrell is not as slow as Bengie but it might be close. It’s kinda bizarre with Pat, though, because he looks like he should have at least decent speed. So while Bengie is the slowest player in the game, Burrell might be the slowest “fit” guy. Good day for Buster to get his first HR- with those 2 on…

When they double switch, insert pitcher into Molina’s spot, Huff moves to first, Posey behind the dish, Schierholtz to right…. when they do all that in the 6th inning, Pablo will be effectively in the cleanup spot.

I’ve looked for Pablo to get moved, maybe to 5th spot and let Huff and Uribe hit 3rd and 4th. If it’s a message, it’s a loud one.

I noted couple of days ago how the lineup look like it has taken good shape, everyone seems to be in the right place in the order. Panda struggling ass, so push him down maybe to 6th in the lineup, but 8th? That is really a slap in the face to really still the best hitter on the team.

But if you are going to put a good contact hitter in 3rd instead, how do you not go with Posey? Uribe should be hitting cleanup like last night with Huff in that 5 slot and then Panda. Posey should also be catching and then stick Nate hitting 8th behind Burrell 7th…

Driving to Chieftown, 40 miles away today, i got the notion that Pablo should be dropped in the lineup because of the way he has been GDPing in particular and not hitting well in general. Eighth is a heavy shot across the bow, but maybe deserved at this point. GH: You and i are completely on the same page with batting Posey third. Uribe just proved that out with his GDP after Sanchez’ single. As long as Burrell is spelling Rowand he would be a logical cleanup man, even if new to the team.

Still a lot of sorting to do.

Question on fifth starter goes into third gear tonight. Wellemeyer again proves he cannot start on the road, even though he has been pretty good at China Basin. So the question boils down to two possibilities. His next start is against the Reds at their bandbox. If they don’t hit him as well as Pittsburgh has through 3 i’ll promise to chew my own shorts. So does Bumgarner get the call to dive right in at the deep end of the pool and chance a severious ego-bruise ~ or do the Giants sacrifice game 4 in Cinci, for all practical purposes and wait to give MadBum the call on the 15th against Baltimore?

Posey would be an ideal 3 hole hitter ala Edgar Martinez – a high average doubles hitter with occasional power. Follow him up with the ‘power guys’ like Huff, Pablo, etc and I think pretty solid.

Dropping Pablo to 8th while also keeping Molina 4th sends a completely hypocritical message. And the point of dropping Posey in the3 order is what?

  62. gianthead's avatar gianthead said, on June 5, 2010 at 5:34 pm

Well Twin, they got Molina the fuck out of there pretty darn quick…they could have pulled Huff instead. Uribe hitting 3rd simply does not make sense and given you dont want Molina hitting 8th, you hit Panda 8th instead????

Posey should be catching and Huff at first and I think you can agree with that…

  63. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on June 5, 2010 at 5:35 pm

  64. gianthead's avatar gianthead said, on June 5, 2010 at 5:36 pm

I would go with Bumgarner in Cincy and then see if Wellemeyer has a good start back at home. If he fails at home then Bum is the new starter unless he lays an egg in Cincy…

  65. Flavor's avatar bigflavor said, on June 5, 2010 at 5:37 pm

i don’t have a problem with the LU at all, Pablo isn’t even our 5th best hitter these days. Burrell in the 4 would make sense if it was down the road a ways, certainly not his first game here. Again, as awful as Wellemeyer was, that’s to be expected since apparently he can only pitch in one single ballpark in the entire world. But if we can’t hit Maholm we were fucked from the end of the national Anthem…..

  66. Flavor's avatar bigflavor said, on June 5, 2010 at 5:38 pm

i mean come on, when you’ve got 0 runs in the 5th vs Maholm does it really fucking matter where you’re hitting in the LU?

  67. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on June 5, 2010 at 5:43 pm

BF: Lineup positioning does matter a bunch when you have a team which leads the majors in GDPs. There are two primary contact-hitter/ rally-starter/ sparkplugs on the squad right now: Franchez and Posey. How many times have they singled to be erased on a GDP just over the past week? Question kinda answers itself, doesn’t it?

  68. Michael's avatar Michael said, on June 5, 2010 at 5:46 pm

  71. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on June 5, 2010 at 5:54 pm

Michael; of course Sandoval in the 8-hole is not permanent. I doubt whether many Flappers had that notion. I sure didn’t. Some hitters are more apt to GDP than others. I’m all for checking the stats and playing the odds. Doesn’t matter how odd a lineup looks at a given portion of the season so long as it works. Right now, Bruce Bochy, for all his conservatism, does not stick to a set lineup. Like i said earlier in the posting, there’s a bunch of sorting to do before this thing jells again. I think we both agree that a set lineup is probably likely before the A.S. Break.

Tonight’s lineup might have gone Torres, Sanchez, Posey, Huff, Burrell, with the first four not being strong GDP candidates, though Huff has done so more than the others if my memory glands are still intact. At least those four are a good combination of contact hitters and count workers.

After that GR double, Bautista did an admirable job once again. I think Casilla has more fireman potential, but down by five, Bautista was the right choice to cauterize the blood flow.

How bout boch ph for Molina in that spot? Surprising. I like all bochys moves tonight. Pablo in the 8 is a fine spot for him he’s smoked pole for weeks now. Rowands on the bench, Molina is getting ph for in the 6th in an easy RBI slot…. It shows me bochy isn’t asleep at the wheel these days

There is no way in hell any manager would have batted burrell in the 4 spot in his first gm back from weeks away from MLB ball including it being his debut for a new team. No chance.

Twin, Posey is almost hitting .500, but he is a ground ball machine???? What are you watching? I will take that hitting all day long. he is not a gorund ball machine but a contact hitter who hits ’em where they aint.

You have had primarily negaitive comments about Posey since he has been here, while the kid keeps producing, your criticism makes no sense.
