A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Hopefully All the Bad Luck and Dumb Play Gets Left in Yesterday

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on June 19, 2010

As I said last night, I didn’t see much of the game. I feel bad for Zito, from what I’ve read he pitched much better than his line. Still can’t get over Flannery sending Huff with no outs. You CANNOT send a guy in that situation when the runner has almost no chance to score. “Shut Down Matt” goes today……

It was one of those days. Every team has them. Some have them all too often. Don’t think that’s the case with the Giants. When your two leading RBI men, Huff and Uribe, each have goat-horns attached for bad baserunning and unselective hitting and the bottom third of the lineup goes zero for forever (under AL dink-hitter rules, no less) you know it was just one of those days. Weird thing right now is that both Posey and Molina need to be sat for a game and Whiteside’s turn to catch doesn’t happen till tomorrow.

Matt the Horse has been the stopper this season. Solid performance after solid performance. His mound opponent is a callup with a sky-high ERA. Giants have picked themselves up after both letdowns and disasters this year. No need to fret. I would plop Rowand on the pine, though and let RentMan DH. Burrell doesn’t like to do that and it showed in his AL stats. Or maybe Edgar could play SS and Uribe DHs. No need to bench the Juan and only. He and Huff both have some atonement to do and might as well do some of it today ~ with the stick and on the basepaths.

Dennis: Though logged in 5 minutes later than you, i hadn’t seen that lineup. Pretty close to what i called for and what we all (mostly) were hoping to see. Whether or not he plays every day, a healthy Renteria on the roster gives this squad a bunch more punch.

Sure looks like one we should win on paper, stix. Horse vs Litsch I like that match up. But shit, Litsch can’t be as bad as those horrific one-game numbers can he? Maybe he didn’t like the Rocky Mountain air. Lots of pitchers don’t care for it. Blue Jays tough at home vs right-handed starters this year, 20-5. Roof is closed today. Let’s get the big horse a few early runs today and ride him all the way to the wire.

  5. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on June 19, 2010 at 9:20 am

Quiet morning on the blog. Must be a lot of hungover, pissed off Flappers. Gametime in less than an hour. Rouse yourselves up, gang. We gotta bring this one home. Time to jolt the Jays.

  6. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on June 19, 2010 at 9:22 am

Of course Litsch can’t be that bad or they would not have called him up. Giants hitters need to convince him otherwise and nail that game in the first inning, contrary to yesterday’s aborted uprising resulting in one mere walked-in run.

  7. delmardennis's avatar delmardennis said, on June 19, 2010 at 9:24 am

June 19 a good day for the horse. Matty carried a no-no his rookie season (2006) into the 8th in a 2-1 win over the Halos.

  8. 3bagger's avatar 3bagger said, on June 19, 2010 at 9:30 am

Flav, The question isn’t why did Flan send Huff, the question is, how in the hell didn’t he score from second on an easy double??? It looked like he went back to tag up from second. That ball was so far out of reach there was no way it was going to be caught. I don’t know if it was Flan or Huff that misjudged it, but Huff should have been rounding third when that ball hit the turf.

Dennis, That’s the LU I called for yesterday. It’s been obvious over the last couple weeks that Uribe is getting tired and it’s showing in his defense. Last night was the perfect time for him to DH and get a second consecutive day of not playing in the field. It also would have put the well-rested Rent at SS which he is better at defensively to begin with. And third, it gets the never productive Rowand back on the bench where he belongs. Had this been the case, I’m almost 100% positive that Rent makes the tough play in the 5th and Zito continues the no-no. Maybe he only gives up the one bomb and the Giants win 2-1.

  9. 3bagger's avatar 3bagger said, on June 19, 2010 at 9:45 am

CSN just confirmed the 5th starter spot will be skipped Tues vs Houston

  10. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on June 19, 2010 at 9:49 am

JB: That rotation slot would then come up in game two against the Beantown Blasters. They would probably pound the piss outa Ironhead Joe. But it also would mean a baptism in fire for MadBum. Think he would be up to the challenge?

  11. Max808's avatar Max808 said, on June 19, 2010 at 9:53 am

“I’m almost 100% positive that Rent makes the tough play in the 5th and Zito continues the no-no.”

    Pure conjecture 3 Bagger.

I would agree Uribe was due a day off. But was it fatigue or the turf? Or just one of those days?

On Huff: I thought it was the 2nd runner being thrown out. But ultimately, seeing that Huff was badly fooled, Flimflam has to hold him up.

It was good to see Zito shut down Lewis.

Getting a little anxious about Jesus. Just 2 dinky singles in his last 25 ab’s.

  12. 3bagger's avatar 3bagger said, on June 19, 2010 at 10:00 am

Couldn’t it have been the turf and fatigue? I’m just saying Uribe hasn’t looked as sharp the last couple weeks. No question it was a hit, not an error, but it’s a ball he should of had.

Not sure when MadBum pitches again after his return from suspension, or if he already has for that matter, but how he looks in that game might determine his call up. If he looks good, I don’t think they can hold out any longer. There’s been speculation that part of his blowup was out of frustration of being stuck in Fresno.

  13. alleykat's avatar alleykat said, on June 19, 2010 at 10:14 am

Couldn’t agree more 3 bags. That was all on Huff not reading the play. And yes he was going back to tag on Burrell’s shot was tailing away from the RFielder all the way and his back was turned to the play..He has to at least play it half way on the base paths.Would have scored easily if he done that.No way i blame Flannery on this one.Shit it’s a double off the wall right down the line, fucking Molina might have scored.

  14. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on June 19, 2010 at 10:14 am

  17. zumarust's avatar zumarust said, on June 19, 2010 at 10:21 am

I’ve conjured up a half-baked theory that Flannery is still coaching third like it’s ’08 and ’09, where you couldn’t have faith the Giants could get a run in from third with no out. The ’10 Giants are not that kind of team anymore, and Flannery needs to have a little more faith in the Giants situational hitting.

  18. delmardennis's avatar delmardennis said, on June 19, 2010 at 10:21 am

FWIW, Bochy said Huff apologized to him and the team about cadillacing the ball he thought was a homer. Said it was a bad example to the young guys and he knows better.

  19. 3bagger's avatar 3bagger said, on June 19, 2010 at 10:24 am

I don’t think he would have gotten more than a double anyway, but I like the apology. Standup guy.

It was a stand up triple if he hustles and the Flannery issue never arises…
Bumgarner pitched Tuesday and should go again tomorrow…

  21. twinfan's avatar twinfan said, on June 19, 2010 at 10:36 am

Bumgarner went 6, 8 hits, 2 runs 0 BB 1 K… I think they’d like to see more dominance, he’s giving up a little more than a hit per inning. On the other hand, he’s given up 2 earned runs or less in 9 of his last 10 starts. Regardless, it’s time.

  22. 3bagger's avatar 3bagger said, on June 19, 2010 at 10:37 am

8 hits over 6 innings with 2 earned. Not bad. If he pitches well tomorrow, I could see him getting the call for the Red Sox.

  23. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on June 19, 2010 at 10:37 am

Whatch think TF ~ should Bumgarner get the call vs Boston?

  24. twinfan's avatar twinfan said, on June 19, 2010 at 10:49 am

Stix and 3Bag: on the one hand, I’d say yes but on the other, what did Joe do to lose the 5 spot? I was against Martinez getting the call for that reason. If Bumgarner is to be the 5 guy and the Baltimore start was a one time deal, they should have had a guy like Kinney take the start. Anyway, they have a few days to decide and Runzler could impact that. The dude has to throw strikes or relearn how: in Fresno. I could see Madison being at the ready first time Joe falters and using him against lefties as well…

  25. 3bagger's avatar 3bagger said, on June 19, 2010 at 10:51 am

    Nice DB ball.

TF, you’re right on that one. I was against the Martinez call too. They did, he pitched well enough to keep the spot. Now what do you do with him?

  26. zumarust's avatar zumarust said, on June 19, 2010 at 10:52 am

I have to admit I’m not impartial on that issue. I’m going to next Saturday’s game. I’d rather see Bum than Martinez.

He would put the ball way behind his head and sort of catapult the shot into the air. Always a fan favorite.
