A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Revisiting an Old Blog Post

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 2, 2010

I wrote this on June 17th.  Read the last sentence. That’s why I re-posted it today…..

“I liked Huff’s quote in the paper today:

“At this time of year, I’m used to being 20 games out,” Huff said. “I’ve never been a part of something like this.

“It’s an amazing experience. I used to be counting the days until vacation by now.”

I’m guessing Franchez is having a similar ride….

Huff’s re-birth has been one of the great sidebars of this season. He’s been like a left handed Ellis Burks lately. You know, when Barry, Kent, Alou, JT etc were on the team it was great because we were winning and who doesn’t like that? But it was never easy to like most of the players on those great teams just as *people*, you know?

This team is different. It’s EASY to like what we know about the fellas on this team. You can root for these players as “people”, not just players who play on your favorite team….

I’ll remember that when we go on a 6 game losing streak– it’ll make it a little easier to tolerate. :)

THAT was an unbelievable catch. His inability to read that ball is infuriating and could have ended in disaster, but that shouldn’t take away from that catch……

Well, except it could still cost the game.

Maybe it’s time for Black Beauty to cut his hair. It might not make a lick of difference in his performance but he’d be infinitely easier to look at if he’s going to pitch like this….

quick basketball comment: there are guys signing right now for 18m, 36m, whatever…..I have never even HEARD of some of these guys! Granted, the Warriors horrendousness over the last few years has had me paying less attention to the league but I still follow it, look at all the box scores everyday, etc….The ironic thing is that by not being able to do anything the Warriors are looking better on paper just by the ridiculous bullshit contracts getting signed right now…..

Ah, that’s where you’re wrong, Kuiper. That Rowand grounder isn’t “heading for the hole,” because, you see, there is no hole there anymore for Rowand. The shortstop is standing in that so-called hole, saying: “Come on now, bring it to Daddy.”

  16. Flavor's avatar bigflavor said, on July 2, 2010 at 7:10 pm

Yeah, that wasn’t Bochy’s best managerial inning. Letting Whitey hit, ever, is really just like playing the lottery…..

  17. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 2, 2010 at 7:10 pm

Flav, you are absolutely right. It’s that bad. For example, Joe Johnson got six years, and $119 million dollars. This is a player regarded as a second option at best for the Hawks. At best. Johnson will be 29 years of age to start this contract, 35 to end it, so Atlanta will get his one peak season (unless last year’s run of over 21 points and a combined 9.5 rebounds/assists was the best we’ve seen), and then the downfall.
At about $20 million a year.

    Fucking dumb.

I’m not sure I understand this. Affeldt has a lucky ass inning to get out of the 8th. Why send him out for the 8th if he was planning on Ray anyways? Does Ray like coming into an inning with runners on? Does any relief pitcher?

  31. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on July 2, 2010 at 7:30 pm

Bochy is starting to walk out on thin ice. It was clear he should have pulled Affeldt with the walk. Now it’s runners on first and second and nobody out. You don’t friggen do this in a one-run game even if the team hasn’t been hitting for shit.

  32. macdog's avatar macdog said, on July 2, 2010 at 7:33 pm

wow…Affeldt got two guys out, struck out the pitcher trying to bunt, and gave up 3 hits and a walk.
Let’s just say Mr. Ray is coming to a team where there are employment opportunities, opening immediately.

  38. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on July 2, 2010 at 7:38 pm

Bochy has clearly lost it. Leaving Affeldt in has made it nearly impossible for the Giants to win this game. If the team goes through the rest of the road trip losing almost continually and they dip below .500 by 5 games or so i would be all for his replacement. True, its by no means all his fault. But he has lost my confidence and this could be true with the team as well. I’m pretty certain most Giants fans, as well as the team will quickly come around to this point of view. Now, when the horse has bolted outta the barn he finally puts in Ray. Sheeeit.

  39. zumarust's avatar zumarust said, on July 2, 2010 at 7:42 pm

  43. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on July 2, 2010 at 7:50 pm

Zoom. Affeldt was kinda okay for one inning. Lately he has been improving a bit. The big problem was Bochy trotting him out there again in the eighth. Then after he walked the first guy any manager without his head up his netherparts would have yanked him. But noooo. So then he gives up extra bases to Fowler. This was a piss-poor job of managing and nobody can convince me otherwise.

  51. twinfan's avatar twinfan said, on July 2, 2010 at 8:04 pm

I’m not advocating it but I definitely can see them firing Bochy if it doesn’t turn around real fast. Self preservation for Sabean. His take right now has to be that he’s doing what he can- “Hey, I don’t do the line ups, Nuke”… I would not say they’ve quit but they don’t exactly ooze confidence. They get down and the game feels over. That was not the case a couple weeks ago..

  52. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on July 2, 2010 at 8:04 pm

JB: They might could win one, probably Cain against Hammel. Flav: When i watched my first live video last night (thanks WSW) i commented here than Uribe’s bat looked dead. Maybe a two or three game rest would do him some good. Of course his was not the only dead bat in the lineup.

The whole notion of starting Whiteside as catcher tonight after Posey’s performance last night was off from the get-go. Another of Bochy’s bright ideas? If it was a matter of Timmy’s comfort zone, well fkkkk that. Obviously Lincecum was not on top of his game tonight and is going to have to get used to Buster sooner or later. Might as well be sooner.

Anyone recall what happened about this time or so last season when Colorado dumped their manager and brought in Tracy?

  55. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on July 2, 2010 at 8:07 pm

I think quite a few of us picked those two Craig . . . May come down to the 2nd tie breaker.

I just read this article from the Santa Rosa Press Democrat and thought this part of the article about Bochy was funny:

He (Bochy) also needs to upgrade his explanations. He said it’s good the team is going on the road. It may rediscover itself on the road. Of course, when the Giants didn’t play so well on the road recently, he said it was good they were coming home. So let’s see if we understand this. The Giants needed to come home to get a break from the road. Now they need to go on the road to get a break from home. The mind reels.

Bochy also came up with this whopper. He says Pablo Sandoval is young and came to the majors from Double-A and is still learning and we should be patient with him. Now, he tells us. We thought Sandoval was a star, was the face of the Giants’ offense. No way — he’s just a beginner. Bruce, please get your stories straight.

  56. JBat's avatar JBat said, on July 2, 2010 at 8:07 pm

Lincecum might go because at least one player from each team does, but he has sucked lately. I go with Wilson because his numbers are dominant. A month ago I would have said Uribe, but I don’t think so noq with a .258 BA. Huff has been good, but probably not all star good.

    I go with BW.

  58. JBat's avatar JBat said, on July 2, 2010 at 8:09 pm

I don’t think Bochy has anything against Buster at all per se, he probably just honestly thinks Eli is a better defensive option behind the plate. That, and he has an absolute hard-on for veterans. 😀

  59. twinfan's avatar twinfan said, on July 2, 2010 at 8:11 pm

There’s still plenty on Tim for this one. 6 game losing streak, the guys give you two in the first, you look for better in your two time Cy winner than giving it back the next inning.

  60. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on July 2, 2010 at 8:14 pm

More and more l’m liking the idea of a fresh start with a new manager and maybe a couple of key ‘injuries’ which would necessitate calling up Rohlinger and/or Downs and probably Edlefsen. Get some young blood on the team and let them have the confidence of knowing they will start for something like a full week without getting pulled from the lineup if they have a bad game or two. Both those infielders have performed quite well at Fresno.

Also, perhaps a different manager would be comfortable about starting Ishikawa at first once the team gets back to China Basin. While this is happening Sabean needs to consider who he could package with Drrrty to get a decent, or at least passable, cleanup hitter. With Huff backing him up, the guy should see some pitches. Should a power guy not be available at a tolerable price, then it’s a snappy hitting speedster in the Dexter Fowler mold. One way or the other, Brian is gonna need to cover his own ass and the best way to do that may be to make a trade which will pay some dividends.

  61. twinfan's avatar twinfan said, on July 2, 2010 at 8:16 pm

“Bochy, Bochy, Bochy – I’m not out on a limb by myself anymore” You never were, “Botchy” bashing has been grand sport here win or lose. What DOES happen after awhile, somebody has to take the fall. Right now, Sabean is starting to think about HIS job… a proactive move is not out of the question at all now.

  62. Del Mar Dennis's avatar delmardennis said, on July 2, 2010 at 8:17 pm

Have any of you heard the new Giants commercial? Just caught it first time myself on KNBR. They’re playing off the Dos Equis most interesting man in the world phenomenon. They were talking about Timmy and said, “He’s the most interesting man who throws the pearl.” Or something like that. They ended with, “Stay listening, my friends.” I smell a law suit.

  63. Del Mar Dennis's avatar delmardennis said, on July 2, 2010 at 8:26 pm

Firing Bochy would be a disgrace. This is ALL Sabean’s goddamn fault. Fuck him. What’s Bochy supposed to do with the shitty hand he’s been dealt? This isn’t Texas Hold ’em where you can bluff and win with 7-2 off-suit. All the cards get turned over in baseball. Bochy is going up against wired pairs most of the times. This team needs to change dealer, not the guy playing the hand.

    Fire Sabean.

Wrong TF – I was a labeled a pariah on the first post for seeing things this way before it actually happened. The team has underachieved, played flat and uninspired baseball for years, and the way the roster/players are handled is borderline incompetent half the time. I understand having the deck stacked against you, but there are simply no other rational reasons for the way this team loses year in and out. ‘Someone’ doesn’t need to take a fall, they need to put the right guy in place for the job (he was fine to deal with Bonds on his way out, completely the wrong guy for this type of team and makeup), and my vote is for Decker.

The only problem is that Bochy is a coach in the all star game (nice insurance policy given by Manuel – thanks a bunch) so we might actually have to wait until we’re 10 back with no chance of recouping.

    Fucking Bochy.

  65. twinfan's avatar twinfan said, on July 2, 2010 at 8:32 pm

I’m usually totally behind Bochy but the Whitehead thing is the most maddening. The fucking NEXT DAY after trading Bengie for the catcher of the future, Posey is totally fucking up…. AT FIRST BASE… If I was Sabean, Bochy would be in my office right now and he’d walk out with orders to play Posey behind the plate every day or find another job….

  66. pickledgringo's avatar pickledgringo said, on July 2, 2010 at 8:32 pm

DMD – Sabean has made some bad moves, but I believe his good moves and rebuilding of the farm system outweigh the bad. Not the best GM in baseball, but he has assembled enough talent to win the division. On paper, we have the talent to win, and certainly the pitching staff to compete with the best of them. If we slip below .500, this is ALL on Bochy. As constituted, with this pitching staff, even a monkey should be able to guide this team to 81 wins.

Gringo, you been watching the pitching lately? The Kid was the shits tonite, along with Sanchez two days ago. Cain and Zito had bad starts, and the pen is jus awful. Two nights in a row it’s a one run game in the 8th, and then Sf is down 4. Different suspects, from Mota to runzler to Affeldt, plus romo and Casilla in the LA finale. The last game SF won was the Casilla-Wilson tightrope act.

You can bring up all the kids you want, hire bobby valentine or billy martin’s ghost, and have the bus leave Whitey on the side of the road naked and tied up in his gear. If they don’t get better pitching, they are going to make life pretty miserable for themselves. And us, unfortunately.
