A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

What a Game

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 4, 2010

Last night’s game felt like about 4 games, didn’t it? Easily one of the most gut punching, entertaining games of the year. I can’t say enough about how our guys came into the 7th inning. I made Ishikawa the POTG but it could have easily been a tie between Torres/Franchez/Huff for what those guys did at the plate after we lost the lead…..

Anyone who thinks Tracy is a great manager, I’d think again if I were you. DUMB idea to let Beimel pitch to Panda. JT was looking at Panda’s splits this year (.218 vs lefties) but last year he hit .379 against them. And even if you are going to go with just this year you don’t do it with freaking Beimel, a confirmed specialist who does much better work just facing lefties.  And I agree with you WILLIEd, what does Seth Smith have to do to get into that Rockie line up everyday???? Tracy’s commitment to “Spilly” is hilarious, Smith’s rocking the world with an .874 OPS when he’s allowed to play. I also think he bungled the handling of Iannetta. But I digress, this is a Giants blog and I’m blathering on about the Rockies…..

Anyway, fabulous, gutty win……

Had to happen sooner or later. Both Huff the Magic Dragon and our own Blade were prescient about the team picking it up facing Ubaldo. Ishi socking a Salami in a road game against the reigning ERA and W. king. Now THAT is news. Maybe it will convince the PTBs that this guy should get more starts.

Wonderful thing about Huff is that he’s versatile and level-headed enough to shift from 1B to the OF without a quibble. Travis getting more starts at first with Panda at 3B and Sanchez at 2B makes for a much better infield. Okay, so Ishi was only 1 for 4 yesterday, but that was a big ONE. Sanchez made up for it going 3 for 5. Who could possibly not like Torres, saving runs, stealing bases. He’s a true playmaker.

It was a messy win but we’ll take a W. anyday, particularly when those hitters go on a tear. Game must have been fun to watch for Giants fans, frustrating, though, with Zito giving up that huge lead; but then exciting as hell when they went and got it right back. Even Nate chipped in for the fun. They will need to keep it up today. Cain NEEDS a laugher. Team needs to go on a winning streak. Bochy’s job is on the line.

Just read the recap and box. Ishikawa getting some daylight and cashing in? Schierholtz actually doing something?? The Giants enemic offense coming to life against the best arm in The Show??? The W was almost predictable in a sick and disgusting way.

    Whew, ain’t baseball great?

    Go Giants!!

listening to that idiot Marty Lurie on the way home this am. He was interviewing Bam Bam and when he asked if the Giants preach hitting patience in the minor leagues he said emphatically “no” and went on to say that they don’t even have a take sign in triple A. That is mind blowing to me…..

Those two statements by Bam Bam are disheartening to say the least. Yet, when one looks at our offensive production these past few years, can’t say it’s totally surprising. Sad, but not surprising.

“only” 54 dogs for Joey today. Must of got wind Rowand was in today’s lineup and knew he’d be puking soon.

Didn’t want to hex them last night, but I am reading a book that is a dialogue by Bob gibson and Reggie Jax called “60 feet 6 inches”. One of the things both disparage is the idea of seeing more pitches, particularly if it puts you behind in the count early by taking strikes. Sando and Kruk both talked about taking a good whack at the first strike you see. Sando said Ubaldo has too many ways to get you out if you let him get 2 strikes, and that was Gibson’s point as well. If you allow the pitcher to get ahead, you make it harder on yourself, and obviously Gibson at his prime was hard enough to begin with.

Ishi’s slam was on first fastball. He did the same first time up and smacked a line drive caught by 1B. Giants did a lot of hacking early in the count last night, and while it didn’t always work out, they had a great offensive night, got 7 off Ubaldo and 4 more off the pen, and overcame Zito suckitude.

The daily agony is over. The long term lingering pain remains of course. But the acute crisis is over, and there’s some relief in that.Travis Ishikawa Denny’s Grandslam should have been the big blow, and when the Rox’s retook the lead i was despondent.7 runs off of Ulbado Jiminez, and all for naught! But the lads rallied impressively with Olympic Nate getting a huge triple and Torres driving him in to tie it.Then Freddy with his 3rd hit,a huge steal of 3rd for Torres, and yes a Panda AB that showed discipline in getting a Sac-fly that put us up.A sweet sequence ,indeed.Aubrey Huff’s 2 run shot in the ninth was sure a sigh of relief,to take any added stress off of Wilson who nailed down the save.

A desperately- needed win comes from the unlikely source– the offense. Our starter(Zito) gives up 6 runs and we win by pounding on one of the best pitchers in the game.Giants Baseball: not just torture, but a bizarre and inscrutable torture!

Matt Cain today, and his last 2 starts have been ugly.If he can right the ship grind out a quality start we could leave Denver with a split, which would be huge.Maybe the bats will stay hot against Jason Hammel, every little bit helps, you know?

    Have a Great 4th everyone,Happy Independence Day!!!

Happy Independence Day, all. I do not take it for granted. (Curiously, the date to celebrate could’ve easily been July 3 or a couple days in August, but ended up July 4. Learned that at a tour of Independence Hall in February and for research on a book I did a few months ago.)

    Stranger Than Fiction . . .

*Johnnie LeMaster hit the only inside-the-park home run to be recorded in a first career MLB at-bat on September 2, 1975 off of future Hall of Famer Don Sutton.
*Jimmy Sheckard hit inside-the-park grand slams in consecutive games on consecutive days in 1901 with the Brooklyn Superbas (later the Brooklyn Dodgers), the only person in Major League Baseball history to do so.
*Ed Delahanty of the Philadelphia Phillies, on July 13, 1896, hit four home runs in one game (itself a rare feat), two of which were inside-the-park home runs. This event is the only time any homers in a four-homer game have been inside-the-park.
*Kyle Blanks of the San Diego Padres on August 18, 2009 against the Cubs became the heaviest player to hit an inside-the-park home run at 285 pounds.
*Emilio Bonifacio, Florida Marlins third baseman, in 2009 became the first person in 41 years to hit an inside the park home run on Opening Day. [1]
*Pete Milne hit an inside-the-park grand slam for his only career home run on April 27, 1949.
*Adam Jones of the Baltimore Orioles hit a two-run inside-the-park homer against the Washington Nationals May 22, 2010 after Nationals center fielder Nyjer Morgan threw down his hat and glove in disgust upon believing the ball cleared the wall on a failed jumping attempt to catch it. It was the first time since Kansas City in 1983 that two inside-the-park home runs occurred in the same ballpark in the same week, the first being Angel Pagan’s just a few days before.
*There have been 40 inside-the-park grand slams in Major League Baseball since 1950 and only eight since 1990 (as of 2007[update]). Honus Wagner had the most in MLB history with five.

Colorado announcers aren’t getting paid by Bow Tie . . . This is what they said about El Presidente coming in for Buster . . . “Unless Posey had a medical reason for leaving the game, there is no reason for Bochy to have brought in Whiteside.” One announcer said something about Whiteside possibly having more speed than Buster, but the other guy shot it down, saying that Posey played shortstop (along with all of the other positions during his college career) and is the far better athlete.

Anybody figure Whiteside wouldn’t strike out there? Thought not. We’ll see, maybe SF can get through it. On the PR of Whiteside for Posey, agree here totally. Bonehead rarely would PR for Molina with Whiteside in a close game, as I’ve yelled for many X, but he PRs for Posey when the game is clearly in play? When I feel like I’m bashing Bonehead too much and maybe should throttle back, here he comes with that kind of move. Should the Giants win this one, it will be despite their manager…

But the whole sequence to Fowler I don’t get. He’s a lean and lanky speed guy…so you go up with everything, either away or better yet in tight and under his hands. He’s not going to pull wilsnn, and if he does it’s a dribbler to right side. If you get him out, the kid Herrera is up there with two outs and has to get a hit to beat you. And you save all the wear and tear of pitching to Cargo and Helton.
