And that’s why they play the game…..
Baseball is a trip. How the hell does a team come into a game totally and completely gassed and yet win fairly easily? And your starting pitcher gets the win with a WHIP of nearly 2.00 for the game? Of course, the guy who looked most gassed in Colorado, Huff, is easily the POTG. Yesterday’s game is a good example of why betting on baseball is d-u-m-b. But what a great win….
I think Posey’s wrist is something we need to be more concerned about. They say it was nothing but I’ve dealt with wrist injuries my whole life. In fact, about 5 years ago I tore my right wrist lig playing in a softball game diving for a ball. I didn’t know the damage at the time. I ended up getting 2 more at bats in the game hitting a home run in my final at bat. Had a cast on for 6 weeks after that. That was the first thing I thought of when I saw what Posey did yesterday. Obviously totally different situations but my point is that just because he hit a bomb after the “grimace” that doesn’t mean he’s all good. He may have irritated a different spot in the wrist. Oh well, I guess we’ll see how that shakes out…..
So I’m wondering if, on an Atlanta Braves blog, they did the same kind of all star game contest we did. Which dude had Omar Infante, lol? What a joke…..
Sabes being in town seems to portend something…compare and contrast SF and Brewers. They have a young athletic SS, who is hitting .240, has 14 errors and basically cost his team the game yesterday.
Weeks at leadoff, 0-4 2 Ks, a shaky 2B.
3B McGehee who couldn’t handle Sanchez fastball and struck out in RISP situation.
Hart, having career year, couldn’t throw out Huff at plate for SF first run.
Braun, 0-5 yesterday.
Prince, 1 hit no runs scored no rbis.
Gomez in CF batting .230.
And in their own park, SF holds them to 1 run even with 6 walks from Sanchez and another from Casilla.
Remember, the Brewers are 9 games under .500 and have a losing record at home in the suckiest division in all of baseball. For all the pop in the lineup, they suck, even in their own yard. Is there anything here worth Sanchez and the bucks it would cost?
Heading out the door, but I agree Willied – I DON’T WANT ANY OF THE BREWERS ON MY TEAM, ESPECIALLY FIELDER.
Let me make it even simpler with this equation . . .
Fielder + Boras + Sabean = Disaster
No.
agree with you guys for the most part. I’d love Fielder for the right deal. No one else. Hart? Negative. He wouldn’t meet the lofty expectations we would have for him plus he’s a total hacker…..
I feel bad for Macha and Peterson, but these guys would kill for a J Sanchez.
If it isn’t Braun, Sabes should be unavailable for a call back. And any deal with Sanchez involves his (hopefully never again) personal catcher.
I agree with WillieD – the only deal I want explored with the Brewers is for Braun.
Fielder (or any full-time 1st baseman) means Huff becomes a full-time OFer. I think the team is better served in adding an OFer (as opposed to a 1st baseman).
Was looking at the ASG contest entries. Swing and a miss by me. I was ready to add Timmy to my picks but didn’t. Even with him having an “average year” by his standards, I should have known that his “rock star status” alone would land him a spot.
Del Mar and I were the only two who picked Wilson as the sole Giant, and we had the same picks for winner of the game and runs.
If Sabean is going to unload Sanchez he’s got to get something worthwhile in return. Even if that means throwing in more bodies. Which it will mean. I don’t see anyone on the Brewer’s as fitting the bill. Fielder? Not likely. Hart? No thanks. Someone mentioned SS and OF as being open slots. I agree.
Chi, I picked Lincecum only. Looking back Wilson should have been included. Having not seen him on the bump for over a week I just forgot.
Any deal for Fielder would have to entail a LT contract. Hart is locked-up only through next year, and will then be a FA. Flav – you call Hart a hack…but Fielder actually Ks more frequently than Hart.
Fielder Ks every 4.36 AB. Hart every 4.88 AB. They’re both hacks.
Again..Braun is the guy I would want from the Brewcrew.
We all know the Giants need a SS, but Escobar (Brewers) is not the answer. I’d rather roll the dice on Brandon Crawford out of ST next year.
What the hell you guys talkin’ ’bout? We have a $10.5M club option on Renteria for next year.
Done deal.
Well, you don’t make trade decisions based on what the guy did yesterday, ferchrissakes. In Hart’s case, though, he’s very unlikely to put up good power numbers at ATT, nearly 2/3 of his HRs are straight away and opposite field. As far as Fielder, it’s complicated by two factors: Ishikawa and now Belt. Not saying either one approaches Fielder but depending on what they think of Belt, there might be enough here to make them restrict the serach to an OFer.That would be my inclination. As to SS- Burris will probably be the guy next year, makng an OFer with pop even more of a priority.
Looking at the stats for Brandon Belt at San Jose and then again in his brief beginning at Richmond, i think we may be looking at an ultra fast-tracker for the first base position. Up to the point that TF noted last night that the long, tall Texan was continuing his heroics in the Eastern League i was mildly on the Fielder bandwagon. Now it does not look like a good move, at least Sabean needs to wait till the end of the month to see whether Belt continues his heroics.
If the Giants make any moves they should be in one or more of three directions. After the devastation caused over the weekend by Dexter Fowler, i’m pretty pumped over the idea of another speedy outfielder to complement Torres. Park almost demands that at least two of the three OFs be rabbits. Gonna check up on Crawford’s stats at Richmond to see if there’s much hope there in the SS position. Last i noticed he was doing okay but not particularly notable. A strong, steady setup man, probably a RHer as lefties are pretty scarce right now would be the third acquisition zone.
Though Ryan Braun would be a most welcome acquisition, he is the heart of what’s happening in Milwaukee. So if they were to be tempted to let him go it would probably entail Sanchez + Wheeler + Bond + another good prospect or maybe even two. It strikes me as pretty much a pipe-dream, though.
These next 6 games on the road will go far to determine Bochy’s future with the team and possibly Sabean’s as well. Anything less than a split with Milwaukee and Washington and some of that teetering may become tottery.
BTW, here are some of YogiFuck’s confirmed aliases, from the Splash. These are all blocked.

Does Bochy start Ishi tonight vs the lefty? Huff is getting tonight off, and deservedly so. If Bochy elects not to keep Travis in the lineup tonight, that either moves Buster to 1B and Whitey (oh joy!) behind the dish or Panda over to first and both Uribe and Rent who are a combined 3 for their last 45 or so must both play. Seems like an easy choice to me. What say you skipper?
Braves are fielding offers for their SS Yunel Escobar.I would like to see the Giants get in the discussion.Only 27,with a career .292 avg.
I’ve said all along the Giants need an OFer that can hit. They got plenty of 1B on the roster, and Huff is perfectly fine there– he’ll should hit 25 dingers this year, and sign him up for next. And they have 1B candidates in the pipeline. Fielder is a disaster waiting to happen. It’s Braun or move on…
Agree with Flav about Omar Infante. He’s a joke. The A/S game is for ALL STARS and Omar Infante is not an All star player. He’s not even a starter on his own team for crying out loud. How can any moron justify that, when Manuel does not include Joey Votto. This pick is a disgrace and a spot that could of been used for any number of worthy players.
Dennis – one of Bagg’s post from yesterday said “Also expect Travis Ishikawa to sit during this run of lefties.” If Huff sits today for a much-needed breather then either Pablo or Posey will be at 1st. I think Posey behind the dish with Pablo at 1st (Uribe 3rd and Rent SS) is their best line-up with Travis and Huff sitting.
Chi, that’s what I was harping on. Sitting Ishi just because it’s a lefty is NOT their best lineup. Pablo at first weakens the defense and having both Rent and Uribe in the lineup in their current funks respectively isn’t the way to go either. And we all know ANY lineup with Whitey’s name penciled in is just plain wrong. This is Bochy over-managing again with the left/right match up BS. Ishi should start.
Don’t know if you guys have been talking about it but it sure feels like the performance that Bochy has gotten out of Ishikawa has been pure luck. On Bochy’s part, that is. How beneficent is that to give Ishi his second start of the season against Jimenez? That’s an absolute shit sandwich Bochy handed him. Credit Ishi with a very well-timed hit that bought him some starts but what the fuck was Bochy thinking? Talk about setting a guy up for failure. I’m not that into bashing Bochy’s moves but when I heard them announce that Ishi would get the start on KNBR that morning, I was pissed at Bochy for him. Sorry, just had to vent – you guys probably talked about it over the weekend but I wasn’t around to discuss.
No to Fielder. Too fat and too slow. Giants should just depend on the farm.
Does anybody really think, with LH pitchers going the next 3 games, that Pablo hitting RH’d is much better than Ishi hitting LH’d? I’ll go Oracle here and say Ishi should get a start or two against the LHPs and just see what happens. If he craters, it shouldn’t destroy any confidence he’s got against RHsP, for Kreissakes. As for Panda, he should shelve the RH hitting for now and just hit LH excclusively. I would hope he could hit no worse, probably better LH’d than .206 or whatever it is that he’s hitting RH’d. It’s not near that bad yet, but Panda’s RH vs. LH hitting dichotomy is starting to remind of Randy Winn…
Again, I’m probably covering old ground but I just looked at Votto’s stats. I thought Huff was snubbed. Votto needing the popular vote to get in is one for the ages.
Henry just put up a new thread on Bochy’s decission to pitch run Whiteside for Posey. He posted the top two best posts from his twitter page in rebuttle to doing it. Tom was the best IMO.
Kat: Bit intrigued about Escobar. He’s been the Braves regular SS for the past 3-4 years. Bit of a dip in his BA this season from a lifetime of .292 to current .238. He sports a quite good BB-K ratio as a hitter. His fielding % lifetime is .974 which is probably close to average for a SS. No idea about his range and other key metrics.
Why would the Braves be shopping this guy right now? Do they have a hot kid in the wings who’s got all the tools and hot to trot but blocked by Escobar? I don’t think he’d be worth parting with J. Sanchez unless he’s a defensive gem. But then why would Atlanta be positing such a move?
If I would have found the time and effort to care enough to rebut Schulman, I think it would have gone something like this…
Jesus H. Christ! Bochy pitch ran Eli Whiteside for…Jesus H. Christ!
Interesting that Schulman invited his Twitterers to riposte his bootlicking of Boch, but no such direct invitation to the Splashers. I suspect Schulman is trying to drum up attention with what he knew was clearly going to be a contrarian position to most fans. That’s the usual column writer trick, but he’s the beat writer. He knows Baggarly is running rings around him in terms of scope and depth of reporting, and for whatever reason, he can’t compete…
Irish: arguing that the team’s morale was “crushed” by the PR move and led to the defeat, is nonsense. Way too much over analyzing by all. The move sucked because Eli sucks. THAt is what bit them-three times.
I don’t know that the decision was worth getting all that upset about. At the time, I didn’t think too much of it other than the fact that it seemed kind of pointless. The chances of the Giants either losing in 9 innings or taking the lead were much greater than the chance of going to extra innings and even seeing Whiteside bat once. Schulman is giving way too much credence to the second guessers on that one move.
Anyone can be a Tweeter ferchrisssakes. The splashidiots knew of the invitation. The idea that his Twitties and his Splashies are necesssarily different groups is hogwash. He probably didn’t make a DIRECT invite on the Splash because he thought he’d get the fucking morons who couldn’t figger out how to tweet and chew gum at the same time. He’d have been right. He eliminated the dumbest of the doomorons by issuing the invitation on Twiitter.
Farm boy news: Checked up on Crawford at Richmond. Again, nothing spectacular in that pitcher-dominated league, but not bad either. 42 runs on 68 hits, including a dozen doubles, three triples and 7 dingers. He has driven in 22. Walks 39 to75 K’s. OBP is okay for middle infielders at .335, with an SP of .373 and a BA struggling a bit at .237. He’s had ten Es for the season defensively.
Team has made a few moves in upper minors besides Belt, 24 Y.O RHSP Craig Westcott was dominant at San Jose so now he’s at Richmond. SJ stats: 6-0 with an ERA of 1.83, 63 hits in 68 innings with 32 BBs and 53 Ks. 1.38 WHIP for the 6’4″ 225 pounder from Chalmette, Louisiana. First start in the E.L. was okay with five hits in 6 innings, two walks and 3 S.O.’s.
Congruent with Westcott’s ascension to Richmond was the promotion of the Squirrels’ ace righthander Daryl Maday to Fresno. The nearing 25 Y.O., listed at 6’2 and 225 was 8-5 at Richmond and sported a 2.34 ERA with 90 hits in 96 innings, while walking 25 and striking out 58. E.L hitters were batting .255 against him.
Though currently sticking at San Jose, 21 Y.O. second baseman Charlie Culberson is making some waves. Toiling at Augusta in ’08 and ’09 with BAs of .234 and .246, the Giants saw something in him and promoted him to High A. for the current season. He has thrived for S.J. Currently Charlie is hitting at a .322 pace, having scored 51 runs on 98 safeties, 25 of them two-baggers, 4 triples and ten Dingers. He’s driven in 50, with a low 16 walks vs. 55 K’s for a decent OBP of .365 and a splashy SP of .530. Between Culberson and Brock Bond, I don’t see Freddy Sanchez remaining with SF beyond the 2011 season.
Here’s the E.L stats for Thomas Neal. He’s scored 31 runs on 90 hits with 21 of em doubles, one triple and 8 taters. Driving in 44 for the offensively challenged team, he has done it with a .348 OBP and a .431 SP. His BA is .283. Somewhat streaky, his power-stroke appears in bunches. He has drawn 24 walks vs. 59 S.O.’s.. Though the power numbers are down fairly considerably from last season, we are talking about the Eastern League, with its emphasis on quality pitching. If he turns it around powerwise in the second half, he may earn a cup of coffee come September.
Nice summary. Thanks stixwiz!
Thanks, Stix.
I said it was interesting. I didn’t need a thesis on why he Tweeted, and didn’t Splish, as well. Whatever. He’s just trolling for more interest in his column. Can’t blame him. Baggarly is eating his lunch…
I tend to agree with you, snarkk. The more I read Baggarly, the less impressed I am with Schulman. Baggarly writes more often on far more topics and generally out-scoops Schulman. I don’t think Hank is terrible, I just see Baggarly outworking him by a large margin.
I’m getting the feeling, and it ain’t a good one, that we’ll see an all right-handed lineup tonight vs Wolf. Uribe is scuffling enough as is, having him play 3B hasn’t been the solution this yr. (.120 .441 OPS) in 25 at-bats. Hope I’m wrong, but it’s looking like this…
Torres-RF
Sanchez-2B
Sandoval-1B
Burrell-LF
Posey-C
Uribe-3B
Rowand-CF
Renteria-SS
Bumgarner-P
If that is indeed tonight’s lineup, a plausible argument can be had for Madison batting sixth.
Agree Twin, he clearly advertises his twitter page, so there is no telling how many splasher twits twitter there.
My pussycats twitter and the tomcats think that’s pretty tweet. No fukkin dignity to the terminology. Wot? Then there’s a couple pussfolk around who’ve had the technofix.
I posted Baggarly’s take last night so that the web challenged could see it. Baggs and Henry complement each other and each has his strong points. Baggarly is more controversial but that’s to be expected- were he the Chron beat writer, he’d certainly be less that. As far as generating more interest in his “column”, nonsense. Just looking at the responses to his and Baggarly’s posts, Henry obviously trounces Baggs.
Chron vs. Merc, there’s more participation in the Chron’s blog. But FAR more fucking trolls. More participation there is to be expected – it’s the paper in the Giants’ home city. But Baggs is beating the crap out of Hank on Twitter in terms of followers.
See you after the game, I’m off to the cabin for the rest of the day.
I don’t find Baggarly more controversial. Compared to Schulman, what I do find is far more information and varying insights. He works and digs harder than Schulman, and it shows in his game pieces and blog…
At the least Baggs has forced Schulman to step up his game. I remember times last year where Schulman hadn’t even posted the LU before a game or postgame notes afterwards. I like them both but Baggs gets the nod for his smart ass wisecracks.
Swick, have you read some of the responses to Baggs? Obviously not. There are people there who could go straight to death row.
I don’t read the responses to Baggs that often – maybe once a week or so. I keep seeing people there talk about their trolls but I rarely seem to notice any. May just be a timing issue. I guess the number of trolls on the Splash is fairly small but the volume of posts is huge. I suppose I don’t follow Baggs’ posters enough to state with any authority that there are fewer trolls there.
Some wizard at MLBtraderumors concludes that if the G’s were to acquire BJ Upton,
it would ‘probably’ mean less playing time for Nate Schierholtz and Aaron Rowand”.
Chuckling a bit regarding John Kerry sending me a “Vote for Kevin Youkilis in the All Star Game” email. I appreciate his frequent emails regarding the disaster in the Gulf and how all Republicans are trying to “hose” us, but vote a Red Sox player into the AS game? Umm . . . I’ll pass
Good one Max . . . Now, that IS funny.
Tell John Kerry to get back to work and do something productive instead of whoring for his favorite Red Sox players. Unbelievable.
RF Torres
2B Sanchez
C Posey
LF Burrell
3B Sandoval
SS Renteria
CF Rowand
1B Ishikawa
P Bumgarner
Well I’ll be damned…Ishi is getting the start against a lefty (contrary to what Baggs blogged). That’s cool. Posey in the 3 hole…don’t recall specifically when, but I can think of only one other time this year he has batted in the 3 hole. Go Giants!
Max, Blade: The other side of the coin in that MLBTR piece on Upton would flip to a possible opening if the Rays do NOT trade him. Seems Tampax Bay has a fleet outfielder in the wings in Triple A Durham name of Desmond Jennings. Decent BA, good OPS, but no power. Ton of SB’s. Might make a worthy trade target if BJ stays, as he is under control for the next couple years.
If the Phils phade they may think it Werth their while to trade Jayson of the many doubles and fair quantity of taters. Free agency looms for him and the price would be high, so the only sensible approach if he were targeted would be an ‘illegal’ agreement with his agent before the deal went down. Not that such things have not happened in the game.
Chi: Man, i was calling for Buster to bat third within ten days of his being called up. Caught a lot of flack for that at the time. Whether he sticks in that role for now is not particularly material, because by the end of the season or starting the next that’s quite likely where he will land. Almost obvious.
With RentMan and RowRow in the same lineup, what amazes me about Ishi playing today is that they are batting him 8th. In the “what have you done for me lately” sweepstakes, he should be slotted 6th. But its nice to see him in there and with Bumgarner batting behind him, the 8-hole may not be pure perdition.
Better hope Bum tosses a beaut tonight, Bochy saddled him with the Room B lineup. Then again, do we even have a Room A lineup? Time for Madison’s first ML win tonight. Plunk Fielder just because…
Stix, just this phrase deserves POTD . . . “If the Phils phade they may think it Werth their while to trade Jayson.”
You and Pawlie have a way with the written word.
Great job!
wsw, I’ve been meaning to ask you something in regard to the Justin TV site. I have always had it bookmarked, but it never allows me to get as far as watching the game. However, the URL address you provided did allow viewing (the two times you’ve provided it here). My question – do you have a daily code or am I doing something wrong when I access the site? Thanks . . .
Great comedy teams: Burns and Allen. Laurel and Hardy. Martin and Lewis. Rowan and Martin. Rohand and Rent…
Too bad we can’t have Ruth Buzzi beat the living shit outta ’em with her purse.
Screw that. Have her hit FOR THEM with her purse…
The Giants should be thankful we haven’t lost our sense of humor or patience yet.
But if they fall any further out of the race, it’ll be time to work on some new Alex Smith jokes.
Agreed, DMD. Maybe the Giants could get Artie Johnson to take over for Bonehead. Upon seeing Rohand’s umpteenth grounder to 3rd: “Veddy Interestink: but Schtooopid!. Rohand — Rauss! Schierholtz, kom her, I like zat name. Get in zair und schtart hittink zoze baaalls!!…”
blade…Most of the Justin channels regarding MLB are ads for other sites…Kostaz is an avid G fan and broadcasts alot to fellow fans…chances are, if your going to catch the G’s play on Justin, it’s Kostaz….Atdhe.net is another place you can catch them play sometimes…A 3rd option is a program called stream torrent. My2P2.eu broadcasts the games after you download stream torrent. That stream is usually about 2 minutes behind “live” action tho…
FYI on the all star game contest. I missed this email but here it is. I’ll add him to the list.
********* to me

Flav-
I’m going with just two allstars, Wilson and Lincecum. The AL will win yet again and 14 runs will be scored.
-3bagger
Thanks Flav.
Yes, I usually watch on My2P2 (when it is available). I also have Atdhe.net, but for whatever reason, I only get the ads when on Justin . . . except the two times you gave me the link to Kostaz justin sites. I will try again this evening and see what happens. Again, thank you for the info . . .
After Rowand blindly swings away at the first pitch he sees maybe Bochy can call a timeout, come out to the box and ask him if he’s okay. If he is okay he can tell him to quite fucking around and hit the ball. Not to 3rd either.
I swear to god, if sabean trades dirrrrty or bumgarner for Corey hart I’ll unleash a flurry of fury that the blog world has never seen before..
Good one, DMD. I could barely believe it when Bochy went out there yesterday and got in Dirrty’s grill to throw strikes. And it worked. Maybe he does that a lot when he’s in the clubhouse, out of view of that sleuth Schulman, so we just don’t know. On second thought, nah, pretty bloody unlikely….
BF, get your Fury Flurry ready. It could happen. Or worse…
Craig, don’t be right this summer about that one like you were last summer about Franchez for Alderson…Neither of those LHP are Alderson…
Randy Wolf tied for the most walks (Dirty) allowed in the NL thus far.
Take a goddamn pitch!
Now, if he were to trade dirrrrrrty or bumgarner for fielder I’d send a gaggle of hookers to his too
his room at the next road trip. So, basically, I’m all over the place on this issue 🙂
Bum better plunk that fat fucker Fielder for sure now.
Two flyouts to deep right. Wolf’s pitches must look pretty appetizing.
K&K are insinuating, very strongly I might add, that Wolf nailed Buster on purpose.
Fuck this shit, “There Will be Blood.” I’m tired of the Giants taking shit lying down. Drill somebody!
What was the alleged motivation?
Didn’t mention motivation, but noticed a pronounced change of delivery for that one pitch only.
Should add, K&K said Wolf didn’t use his normal “sling” motion. Insinuating for that one pitch, he changed his delivery for more velocity.
22 pitches for Wolf in two innings. He’s getting off easy so far. Mostly fly-outs, so they must look tasty, but not connecting right.
The beaning of Fielder by Zito in ST.
Prompted by the bowling pin deal last year . . .
wsw . . . It works – I bookmarked it (the one you provided) over the one I had previously. Again, thanks . . .
Randy Wolf is making us look downright silly. Truly shameful.
K and K just figured out that Rent isn’t playing with confidence . . . duh!
