A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Dodgers….

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 19, 2010

Knowing we get to slide right into a series against our *supposed* greatest rival makes it a little easier to focus on that and not on yesterday. And yesterday would have been a little easier to stomach if we hadn’t already had that inspiring comeback in the 9th. Oh well, nothing you can do about that……

Krukow was on the radio this AM saying we’re catching the Dodgers at the right time— Broxton threw 43 pitchers yesterday, a bunch of their guys are hurt. I think that type of thinking is BS. It’s on US to play well for once against this team. The way we’ve been playing against them recently they could field their AAA team and still probably beat us……

I have a feeling I’m on the younger side of the flappers, but do any of you remember the umpiring being any worse than it has been recently. Cuzzi obviously blew it yesterday, but I feel like there have been so many blown calls this season. I swear every other plate ump also has a moving strikezone that is nowhere near consistent. On top of all this, I think their attitudes are getting worse all the time. A good ump is one that nobody notices. More and more, these guys want to be seen barking at players and managers, making dramatic out/safe gestures, etc. A couple months ago a plate ump followed one of the Giants back to the dugout screaming at him as he walked away. Umpires have one of the toughest, most scrutinizing jobs anywhere, but these guys need to be put in their place. More and more I’m in favor of replays AND electronic balls and strikes. Your thoughts…

It’s my understanding the Giants will call up a position player today (Burriss? Velez?) and return to 12 pitchers.

Thank Christ! I don’t have to buy a Dodger’s cap and root for those fucks. Go Giants! Beat LA!

wow, I have been away for awhile. last week celebrating 25 years of marriage. come back to read post and TF now has Sandy and Gringo that are pissing him off. Anyway was in SF on Saturday in a restaraunt at Pier 39 and a Mets fan leans over from another table and asks if the Giants could let the Mets win one. I laughed. He is living in Texas now but when he was growing up his dad was a die hard Dodger fan, I told him a Mets and a Dodger fan I could not talk to him anymore. He said his dad became a Yankee fan once the Dodgers moved out west, said his dad hated the O’malleys after that. It is so cool to hear how people became baseball fans.

Schulman also just said it was his understanding that the Brewers shot down Dirty for Hart.

3bagg, I brought up the electronic strike thing here awhile ago and everyone gave it a hell NO answer. What I would like to see is the same number of umpires they use in the AS game and the playoffs and WS in a regular game. and then like they do in football the umpires should huddle together and make the right call. Was listening to ESPN the Herd and he commented that once an official turns 40 he should be retired, his eye sight isn’t as good, right along with there reflexes.

They HAD to get rid of a pitcher, or face tough questions, and a possible late inning bench move gaffe-athon again tonite. What is it that changed overnite to cause the roster change, other than the Fanbase being PO’d? 20. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on July 19, 2010 at 4:10 pm

Because of their impatience, the Giants almost always suck against an unknown guy or a callup pitcher–like McDonald. They need to get to this guy early. And, Madbum better be pitch like an unknown to LA (tho he did pitch an inning or two at ATT against them late last season). Problem is the Dodgers are a squad of more patient hitters than the Gmen. With Loney back, this one is definitely not a gimmee tonite….

Velez for a late inning AB or pinch running. I can deal with that. No way Huggy Bear should set foot on the diamond with a glove in hand.

  22. Craig's avatar Craig said, on July 19, 2010 at 4:23 pm

None of these are gimmies. Until they prove they can beat LA or SD I could see them losing every gm vs both of those teams for the rest of the year. At thus point it’s mental and mental goes deep and can last forever…

  23. 3bagger's avatar 3bagger said, on July 19, 2010 at 4:23 pm

Huggy Bear? What happened to Count Chocula? I could handle a Velez 2-run PH bomb into the RF pavilion. But, PR at first in the 9th in a tie game, or tracking down a rope into the left field gap, yeah, that’s problematic sphincter territory…

Well said BF. When I was on my trip I read The Baseball Codes: Beanballs, Sign Stealing, and Bench-Clearing Brawls: The Unwritten Rules of America’s Pastime by JasonTurbow. A great book that all of you should read if you have the chance. There’s some nice stories about having the mental edge and being able to dominate another team because of it. It reminded me exactly of what the Giants have been going through against SD and LA. A Dodger drubbing at Chavez Ravine would be a perfect way to change the tide.

Is James McDonald any relation to Tim McDonald? A college buddy of mine grew up in Fresno with T McDonald and has some great stories about what an amazing athlete he was. He says Tim was shooting legit, pull-up jumpers from the top of the key when he was in 6th grade.

  32. 3bagger's avatar 3bagger said, on July 19, 2010 at 4:51 pm

  33. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on July 19, 2010 at 4:56 pm

Know what? I like the looks of the comparative lineups tonight. Though they have four good hitters, that LaBumbo array just does not scare me like it did last season and earlier this year. Posey batting cleanup. Shortly after his callup i got plenty of flak for suggesting he bat third. Of course Bengie was still catching at that point and Buster hadn’t relaxed into his groove yet.

Tonight’s LU does not have as many wild swingers as those earlier in the year. If Pablo is back in Panda mode, he will get a good eye on whatever he happens to swing at. Our 2-4 hitters are pretty balanced in their approach and so is Travis.

So the strategy against McDonald is twofold: Light him up and wear him down. Work that guy into long counts unless he serves up something fat and juicy.

    • swickman's avatar swickman said, on July 19, 2010 at 5:12 pm

stix, I was thinking earlier how this is pretty damn close to my favorite lineup of the year. Guys playing where they are well suited on the field but plenty of power and productivity. I like it. It doesn’t guarantee anything of course, but I think this lineup gives the Giants a good chance.

    • swickman's avatar swickman said, on July 19, 2010 at 5:15 pm

Also, I don’t want to get too ahead of myself but Panda looked comfortable last night. If he’s back and Posey and Huff stay even kind of hot, the table is set for a great second half.

  34. Flavor's avatar bigflavor said, on July 19, 2010 at 5:15 pm

    CF Torres
    2B Sanchez
    LF Huff
    C Posey
    3B Sandoval
    SS Uribe
    1B Ishikawa
    RF Schierholtz
    P Bumgarner
I love this LU– it’s probably the best one we have to field when you consider everything. I’d rather have Nate in there over Burrell right now. Pat gives you one thing basically and he’s not really giving us that right now. Nate gives you speed and defense and, like Ishikawa, the occasional power shot. And Bumgarner is a better hitter than at least 2 of our position players that we have on the team right now……

Yeah, BF, said it well- the Giants need to COMPETE tonight against LA. It just didn’t happen that last series with LA. The Giants looked like they were back on their heels that whole series; and even though some of the scores were fairly close, the games themselves didn’t feel that close. LA obviously plays with a lot of confidence against SF these days.
A victory for SF tonight would be huge for a lot of reasons. Show LA we mean business this series, get the stench of the bad umpire call out of the air, and help bury LA further in the division. And SF gets closer to a playoff spot day by day.

Bochy is the worst arguer of all time but come on, that all just theatrics. A call like that is never changed. It makes the fans feel good, that’s about it. We need instant replay, yesterday, in baseball. Selig continues to wait for no reason at all…

Why the hell didn’t Bochy have Whitey in there pinch running for Buster?
