A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

The Demise of a Baseball Blog…….

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 26, 2010

I showed up at The Splash a few games into the 2007 season. It was the first blog I’d ever visited. I think it took me about 2 posts before Twinfan and I were at each other’s throats, lol. But to me, that’s really when that blog started to take off…..

The Splash was a great place back then but I’m glad they started monitoring it, it was absolutely out of hand. But back in 2007  and 2008 there was a unique community there. I miss that, actually…….

In some ways I feel responsible for the demise of The Splash. Back in the day, we would  run off trolls simply with our volume of posts. But after I started this place, THAT PLACE got fractured and splintered. Back then we could get like 300 posts a day from about 7 people…..

I’m sorry The Splash has been overtaken by fools. It’s certainly run by them, too, if banning Twinfan is their idea of thoughtful moderation. For the life of me I can’t understand why there are people out there who’s sole existence is to be disruptive and annoying– “Soph”, “BarryForever”, etc are almost hilarious in their worthlessness. I guess people like that would rather be noticed  instead of being ignored, which is probably what happens to them in their daily lives….

This post is simply a tribute to what  The Splash used to be…….

It seems every time I check out for a weekend, craziness ensues on the basepaths, here or at SF Gate (but at this point I dont see any sense of any one of us bothering with the dregs there). I might post once a month there and probably more on the Warriors.

SF Gate was fine last year when I first got engaged until Flav’s original blog got rolling…but any news on Ohman? He seems to the most likely addition at this point…we cant go 4-6 weeks without a lefty in the pen…and sounds like Hinshaw is regressing at Fresno!

    Prayers with Eugenio…

My thoughts on transiting from the Splash to the Flap were posted last night and i don’t care to rehash them except to say that switching over here when i did was the right decision.

Looking at the Giants schedule with August road trips to Colorado and Atlanta, followed by ones to St. Louis and Philadelphia, would have filled me with quiet trepidation a couple months back. Now, however, looking at that photo of Posey BF has posted to the right just about takes the words right outta my mouth. He looks like the NL’s answer to Joe Mauer. If he keeps up anything resembling his current pace he will shoo-in for ROY. Hell, he may even get some MVP votes as a rookie catcher not even having played a full season by October.

This team has a bit of swagger now, but there’s more of a quiet confidence, slowly growing but steadily building. Padres can’t seem to shake them and now they too will start to face a tough schedule ~ including the Giants.

Hopefully we can catch the Friars before that trip to Philly and St. Louis..F those Friar Fuckers. If they had lost just one game to those Pathetic Pirates, we woyul dhave been right at two games out as I predicted last week…damn!

I think the Friars do have two series against the LA Bastardos coming up though.

We need to take 3 off the Marlins…no let up Gigantes! And two from the Bastardos…we play on Sunday night, unbelievable. I was looking forward to another NY/Boston/Philly/Cubs/Cards game for the 40th time this year…

I never posted on the Slash until I moved from SF (08 I think). I would read it though (could read blogs at work but not post and didn’t really check it out when I was home). Some good, bad and really weird stuff would get posted, the off-season would get way out there. I remember reading OSF posts two or three times to try and figure out the meaning(s). There was that guy (Yogi?) who would have those late night rants talking to himself and although it was blather, I would read them because I was mesmerized by someone melting before my eyes. But all in all it was pretty good back and forth banter, kind of like buddies in a bar talking smack. If I remember right, Flav decided to start a blog that wouldn’t lock up on you, that had the posts in the right order and whatever else problems the splash was having then (thanks again Craig).
All the blogs on SFGate have trolls as I’m sure most blogs do. As someone else has mentioned, I too wonder if some of the persona posters are the work of bored Chron interns. I would say Henry might be behind one or two (maybe Baggs is SJ_News_reader) but I always thought he was to lazy in just being a beat reporter, so I don’t know.
I haven’t posted anything in awhile over there and haven’t used the Ignore button. Maybe my first post will be just to list who I’m ignoring and then go from there.

I have little doubt that I’ll get banned again today under “twinnie”. I’m actually sort of aiming for it. I’d like it if it sort of came to a head today and the moderators there looked at what a cesspool they have. We’ll see. Either way I think I’ll be finished with it, just too much bullshit.

Dontrelle Willis as the answer to the need for a lefty??? Say it aint so Joe! Just read the comment from Baggs’ column that Sabean is quoted as saying that he could be an option down the stretch…

  8. Giant Head's avatar Giant Head said, on July 26, 2010 at 8:48 am

Twin, I am not ripping Sabean for “could be,” I am just very leery of Willis coming out of the pen as a lefty reliever when he has such a high-walk count and no experience in the pen. Let’s look at other options…

Man, the Giants have been on fire for the last few weeks. They just finished a killer road trip, and are three games over on the road after a horrible start to the year away from AT&T. Buster Posey is the stud of studs and the guy all of us G fans have been waiting to come along for years. What a badass player he looks to be, with a fantastic, mature and polished approach at the plate, and the raw tools to be one of the best backstops in baseball, IMO. An 18 game hitting streak, fer cryin’ out loud! Nice draft pick, Sabes! 😀

The pen is a concern, and I think Affeldt going down almost forces Sabean to make a deal for a pen lefty, but we’ll see this week I guess. Some of you mentioned Hinshaw above, and it’s too bad he’s not the guy. I saw him pitch a few weeks ago against Tacoma and was very impressed with his arm. Just electric, something you don’t always see on TV. But the last thing the Giants need is another pitcher who walks five guys per nine IP!

BW might be the best closer in baseball right now. Just lights out and confident in his abilities. I love his warrior spirit. Exactly what you need for that role. A lo to be excited about here. Now if only the fucking Padres would cooperate and lose a few damn games. If not, we’ll just have to kick their ass head-to-head and take the fucking division lead!

    Go Giants!!

Twin – Sorry I’ve been absent from the Splash dust up. I view any ban as an honorable concession that you’re just not helping to sell newspapers … the sole function Splash was created to serve. Most Splash tools use it read their names and spank by pressing “thumbs up” for themselves.

Sure, while Twin is often just a shit-disturber (think Iago), the discourse and argument usually includes facts and the vitriol keeps the season going. Without some rivalry and history (e.g., LA v. SF, Twin v. Flavor), the day-to-day play and grind of baseball is simply too fucking monotonous to bridge the calendar to football.

To move on from the Splash controversy, I draw on the widsom of Proposition Joe in Season 1 of The Wire: “I’m like a marriage counselor. Tell the man he oughta bring the bitch some flowers every once in a while. Tell the bitch she gotta suck some cock every once in a while. That sort of shit.”

Go ahead, Henry. Please put me on the Twin blacklist. But Twin, don’t confuse my support with agreement. You’re still a stooge for Larry and Brian …

  17. Giant Head's avatar Giant Head said, on July 26, 2010 at 9:21 am

Regardless of worrying or not worrying of what might be, we certainly need another lefty reliever, dont you agree Twin? We might say an all-rightie bullpen is fine for the sake of argument, but that is not usually a winning formula for long.

I have been thrilled with how Bochy has handled the team (I am still arguing that his dropping of the chew has actually been a great positive and helped his strategic in-game thinking).

Now I will also say if the teams with lefty relievers available are trying to hose Sabean knowing we need a lefty, then fuck them and dont make a deal. If Ohman is not available for two cheap low-level prospects, then screw the Orioles…

  19. twinfan's avatar twinfan said, on July 26, 2010 at 9:44 am

Well, there just might be something to the notion that lefties are flakes, the “keek a touchdown” guys of baseball. I don’t think it’s my imagination that their ERAs fluctuate from 11.00 to 1.38 and back again year to year. Hell, Taschner could go lights out for the Bums, we could get Downs and he goes Tire Fire on us. Anyway- I absolutely do not give a shit if they have lefties there or not. Whatever else may be said of him , I’ll posit that over the years Bochy has shown himself to be one of the best pen handlers in the game. Again this year, he has not had an 8th inning guy to rely on and still we can count on one hand with fingers left over, the games they’ve lost because of it. How he’s gotten a serviceable pen at all with Bautista, Casilla, Affeldt, Mota, and Runzler ALL wallking the ballpark is an astounding feat.

Romo has dipped a little this year vs. LH batters (.260 BAA yet mere .280 SLG), but his BAA vs. LH was .083 in 2008 and .188 in 2009 – both better than his RH numbers. The frisbee ties up LH and he has enough tail away on the two-seam. So, yeah, don’t trade for another Jim Poole just for the sake of feeding the book.

Bozo: That was “Hangman”, or the “Hanger”, or one of a number of dead movie star names he called himself ( Steve McQueen was one, I think) He claimed to be a con and to have killed a prison guard. Guy was a Yankee fan, hilariously so. He said Tim’s arm was going to fall off and Darrell Rasner was going to win the Cy, and Wang was one of the greatest pitchers of all time. He also spoke disgustingly of women. The Hanger was a piece of work. He’d invent buddies to chat with in the wee hours. Hell, I just talk to Zeke…

  21. Giant Head's avatar Giant Head said, on July 26, 2010 at 9:56 am

The most ridiculous moment on SF Gate last year was when they returned from a road trip and Timmy’s back tightened up on him and he missed a start (I think that was the game they brought Bumgarner up for), the idiots on the Gate then started to say that Tim was finished, his delievery was ruining his back, he will never keep pitching, etc. Complete morons…that was when I started to tune out!

I blow hot and cold on Jenkins. He’s the best writer the Chron has left, but that ain’t saying a lot. The newspaper/internet thing is changing so fast, there may not be any real, traditional sportswriters or beat writers left in 5 years. What the internet and blog world has provided is that there is no shortage of both smart and bad commentary on sports. When you see somebody like Ann Killion pontificating about sports on CSNBA and just blowin it out of her =ss, you realize that just about anybody with decent writing skills and an expense account can do the sportswriting gig, maybe not well, but they can do it. With team access and three squares a day and a scotch or two, I swear most if not all the posters here would do at least a passable job on the Giants gig….

Eugenio Velez sat in the visitors clubhouse at Chase field after the Giants 3-2 victory Sunday, dressed in street clothes and wearing a serene look.He probably felt lucky to be alive after surviving the concussion he sustained felt when Pat Burrell ‘s foul line drive struck him on the left side of the head.

The rest of the Giants were minding their own business engaging in the hustle and bustle of preparing for a getaway day flight back to SF.Since the Giants had won,the clubhouse stereo was happily blaring some dreadful sounding music.

Suddenly Matt Cain approached Velez and asked him a question.”Is that too loud?” Cain asked, referring to the music’s volume.Velez shook his head, acknowledging things were fine. But it certainly was nice of Cain to ask, since everybody knew Velez head was still pounding from the concussion. And it was another of the often unseen demonstrations of the bond that teammates share.

Yeah, if they can get BFE and Fishhead, that would be a nice start . . .

    • swickman's avatar swickman said, on July 26, 2010 at 3:20 pm

Fishy is impotent and BFE can’t do shit as long as the Giants are winning. His whole schtick is relentless posting during losing streaks. You can’t get either one of them because their posts aren’t malicious. But they know it, too, so it makes them have to keep their posts tame.

FOX Sports had an article stating that apparently how this series turns out will have a lot of bearing on who Florida is looking to trade or get rid of. The article also stated that the Giants “solved their firstbase troubles inhouse” by letting Ishikawa start more often. Hell, I love Ishikawa starting more games but I never really thought the Giants had firstbase “troubles” with platooning Posey, Huff, Sandoval and Ishikawa.
Unless they mean it is the platooning part itself that looked like troubles

Nolasco is no chump, whatever his current numbers. Burrell has definitely cooled off but the 3-headed third OFer 9 Nate/Rowand/Burrell has been decent, almost as good as Winn has been for St. Louis 😉

Like I said, twin, that was my gift to you. I was pissed as fuck that you were blocked from that site while stan threw out insult after insult. I’m sure it won’t last but it’s actually giving me chills to see everybody talking baseball on the Splash, even if it’s just for one afternoon…

This whole thing puts barryforever and soph in perspective. They’re annoying but at least they’re not annoying AND insulting.

      • TedSpe's avatar TedSpe said, on July 26, 2010 at 3:59 pm

eh, barryforever’s been insulting. But stops when called for it. But personally, I find it insulting to the players when he writes “Reverts to form” in Spanish if it’s Sandoval, Molina or a Sanchez.
But maybe I’m being overtly PC simply because I don’t like him or his type

Really some bloggers on the Splash depend on the Giants losing games to contribute anything but with this winning streak, a wrench has fallen into their efforts to find fault with the team so they find fault with others. Fights occur and people get banned. Winning is difficult for some.

Well, we’ve all seen what’s possible at the Splash again, however briefly.

Here are the steps to get rid of trolls there:

    1. Bait them. This is the toughest part because you can’t say anything bad about them directly. If possible, don’t ever use their names in an insult. Your insults should be specific enough that the troll feels compelled to respond but general enough that the censors can’t tag you for it.

    2. Bait them some more. It’s tough to get barryforever out of his shell but it’s possible. You need to incite him to say as much insulting stuff as possible.

    3. Pounce on their insulting posts. Report the abuse. If they post more than one post in a row directed at a specific person, let SFGate know in your abuse report that you find it disconcerting that they seem obsessed with the person they’re attacking.

    4. Use magic words that create legal liability for the editors of the Chronicle. “I feel increasingly threatened by this person.” “The underlying sentiment of racism offends me as a Mexican-American.” “This person is obsessed and is using increasingly violent language.”

I know these people need attention but let them find it at their local Dunkin’ Donuts. We can really reclaim the Splash again with some effort.

    • TedSpe's avatar TedSpe said, on July 26, 2010 at 5:28 pm

I don’t know. fishwrap insulted me and African-Americans on a post. I reported it and nothing happened. Though the racism *was* veiled. He said I was obviously the result of the Oakland public school system

      • swickman's avatar swickman said, on July 26, 2010 at 5:31 pm

Yeah, you gotta play it up. They’ll only read so much into the posts but if you spell it out for them, how it makes you feel threatened or upset, sometimes they’ll take your side. I know it’s petty and all but fuck these people. They’re on a site that’s supposed to be about baseball and they’d rather try to turn it into their little soap opera stomping ground. Fuck ’em. I’m not letting anything slide any more.

      • swickman's avatar swickman said, on July 26, 2010 at 5:38 pm

Yeah, that was cool. Of course, he’s figured out that even obvious plays on names are allowed – I assume because the moderators can’t determine for sure if they were intended to be insulting.

    • TedSpe's avatar TedSpe said, on July 26, 2010 at 5:41 pm

He did a play on twinfan’s name once connotating “fag”, twin called him on it and he never did it again. Didn’t apologize. Didn’t even acknowledge twin’s post. But he never did it again. So yeah, he’s careful

      • swickman's avatar swickman said, on July 26, 2010 at 5:46 pm

That’s what I find super shitty. That the Chron allows that stuff to go on but if twin calls people idiots for being the megafucktards that they are, he gets banned. It’s all about the magic words that make SFGate feel that they must take action to protect themselves legally. I’m sure that’s the card that was probably pulled to get twin banned in the first place. Since soph is pulling that shit, it’s fucking game on as far as I’m concerned.
