A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

The Demise of a Baseball Blog…….

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on July 26, 2010

I showed up at The Splash a few games into the 2007 season. It was the first blog I’d ever visited. I think it took me about 2 posts before Twinfan and I were at each other’s throats, lol. But to me, that’s really when that blog started to take off…..

The Splash was a great place back then but I’m glad they started monitoring it, it was absolutely out of hand. But back in 2007  and 2008 there was a unique community there. I miss that, actually…….

In some ways I feel responsible for the demise of The Splash. Back in the day, we would  run off trolls simply with our volume of posts. But after I started this place, THAT PLACE got fractured and splintered. Back then we could get like 300 posts a day from about 7 people…..

I’m sorry The Splash has been overtaken by fools. It’s certainly run by them, too, if banning Twinfan is their idea of thoughtful moderation. For the life of me I can’t understand why there are people out there who’s sole existence is to be disruptive and annoying– “Soph”, “BarryForever”, etc are almost hilarious in their worthlessness. I guess people like that would rather be noticed  instead of being ignored, which is probably what happens to them in their daily lives….

This post is simply a tribute to what  The Splash used to be…….

I was reading the posts here so I went to the splash to see it. No thanks. What up with OSF? He stopped posting with us, and the team is winning and he’s bitching and kvetching about management. Hmmph.

OSF, for some reason, says he can’t find the Flap. He’s either full of shit or he’s got to be doing something screwy. I mean, how hard is it to type oneflapdown77?

  2. Flavor's avatar bigflavor said, on July 26, 2010 at 5:49 pm

Only OSF would be unable to find a website armed with the correct website address. Too funny……

I suppose I could be called Clubber-OSF naive, but a lot of this is a thin line or mysterioso to me. By that I mean: what is a troll? what is an insult? It’s okay to insult each other [within undefined limits] here but not the Splash? who cares? I don’t demonize the Splash or anyone there because it is mostly irrelevant to me. And I like it here because it is a community of smart and smartalecky Jints fans. I guess, I’m wondering out loud about a possible double standard of bloggitude. (Even I can’t explain that.) I guess I’m saying I’m too lazy to find out enough to jump on one bandwagon or another. Last year, on Union Street, in Sf, I bought a tiny gem of a book called The Underachiever’s Manifesto by Ray Bennett, M.D. So, I’m perfectly content to be a Splash or Flap underachiever. Carry on. As you were.

    • swickman's avatar swickman said, on July 26, 2010 at 6:10 pm

The point is that if you want to insult me, then you better be prepared to receive an insult in return. If you insult but run to Chronicle moderators for protection when you’re looked at funny, then you need to be fucked with. A troll is a person who persists with a false persona and posts pointless shit. It’s not really a big deal until they post 8 times in a row and make it difficult to distinguish the real posts about baseball.

I know it all comes off as petty but a lot of us got started talking about baseball online by following the Splash. It’s really annoying to see it slowly fall under the control of people who are perfectly content with causing the topics to drift to their drama instead of baseball. If you never really did much participating in the Splash or are good at ignoring trolls, I can see where reacting at all would seem to be odd behavior.

    • TedSpe's avatar TedSpe said, on July 26, 2010 at 6:10 pm

There’s a different style of insult on the Splash and the Flap. Sure, there’s jocularity here and sometimes it gets out of hand but no one comes to the Flap with the single intention of being an annoying shithead. Granted, they may end up being an annoying shithead. I can be an annoying shithead. But that wasn’t the intent. On the Splash, it’s an actual motivation. In fact, the insults there don’t even bother me. It’s the attempts to raise people’s blood pressures by either being a redundant, complete jerk, like the two kicked off today and BFE or an intentionally, uninformed, redundant twit like soph. These are personas and agendas. ANd it’s an insult to everyone else who go there.

And in full disclosure, to be honest I’ve had all these folks on “ignore” for months now. But I can tell from the comments of those who aren’t how aggravating it still is over there

I like the Rays as an organization — their players and their manager. They are young and will be good for years. Yeah, I want Crawford too. But despite the selfish reasons (no three-hour time difference and 1,800 miles closer) I’m sure glad the Giants did not move to God’s Waiting Room.

  30. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on July 26, 2010 at 7:39 pm

Cantu is having a down year overall, particularly in run production. He’s only 28 and has established himself somewhat as a slugger. However, his OBP has never been particularly good, showing up outlined in his BB-K ratio. With Ishikawa coming into his own and both Belt and Pitt in the pipeline, i can’t see much sense in adding a first baseman who can also play third. I still prefer an outfielder, preferably Willingham.

  33. DJLoo's avatar DJLoo said, on July 26, 2010 at 7:56 pm

OSF thinks it’s a perfect game as long as you pitch to only 27 batters. Even if you walk 4 allow 2 hits, your perfect game is intact if you got 6 DPs.

  34. twinfan's avatar twinfan said, on July 26, 2010 at 7:57 pm

Ishikawa saw about 5 pitches that he would have struck out on last year. His K ratio is well down thuis year, about 1 per 6 PA to 1 per 4 last year.
