A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Stick a fork in them……

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on August 17, 2010

The Dodgers are done, man. Their collapse really is astounding when you consider the talent they had on that team to start the year. But Kemp got Hollywood-on-the-brain and decided it was more fun to date Rihanna than it was to work on his game. The broken thump slowed down Ethier. And as I said a few weeks ago when I watched him warm up, Broxton is hurt (though they say he’s fine–curious when he’s lost 5 mph off his fastball)……Either way, watching them go down with Torre fanatically pulling strings that are attached to nothing is funny as hell…….

Big series begins for us today–they’re all big from here on out. For some reason I feel like we are going to hit just fine in Philly. If our pitching holds up we could easily win 2 and maybe all 3. Still, I’m taking the over in all three of these games no matter what the number……

Well, it’s *only* 7 1/2 tonight, Flav. That’s screaming for an OVER. Damn, it’s like they’re begging ya to take it. They want ya, they need ya, they implore you to take it. The hook is baited, the line is cast and 7′ Fenwick fiberglass pole awaits to be smoked. Shit, I wouldn’t touch that with a 10′ deep sea, heavy action Shimano special. Fish on! 🙂

Yo Flav, I’ll be at tonight’s game, perhaps the one tomorrow. Weather is sticky hot today. I’ll try and get some pix.

Interesting prediction there. Need I remind you that last year’s games in Philly were 0-1, 4-0 and 1-2. Sometimes CBB isn’t quite the bandbox everyone makes it out to be, although with Burrell, Huff, Posey and Guillen, I expect better than 5 runs this time around.

It looks like Utley will be back tonight, but Howard, who is eligible to come off the DL, still isn’t ready. The Phils held up remarkably well in their absence. That’s really no surprise given how tough this is team is, never more evident than in that incredible comeback vs. the Bums last week.

Good read from Baggs on the Huffster and how Burrell helped defined who he is today. But, damn, pat needs to hide his “bat,” especially in the presence of the Huffster’s mother.

I was watching baseball tonight while the Dodgers were falling apart in the ninth. They’re so done…well done. I was actually pulling for them to hold off the Braves though, because they have zero chance of climbing in the standings and I still think if it comes to a wildcard race, the Giants will be battling Atlanta and Cinci, as the Phills and Cards will win their divisions.

From an Amy G. tweet (shaddup): Guillen has switched his #1 jersey with 3rd base coach Tim Flannery. Guillen will now be wearing jersey #6.

That ought to make him run a whole helluva lot faster now.

      Nice call re Robby.

JT … most over-hyped Giant ever. Robby was an All Star twice, Silver Slugger in ’93, drafted and home grown, never whined about PT or status. JT took Robby’s number and had 3 or 4 productive years. If SF allows Eli Whiteside to wear Jack Clark’s No. 22, then JT can just bite his lip and keep collecting those face-time checks from Larry.

And who let Pablo take Russ Ortiz’ no. 48?

That should be a message not to mess with it. Those were tough games to listen to with those fuck head Padres but what a treat to listen to that Burrell grand slam on Thursday.

I have a bad feeling about this road trip. 2-4 has an ugly ring to it. I say start Guillen everyday and if he flunks…sayanora!

As for the “Who?”, I’m sure there are many here and on the Splash who don’t know anything about the Giants prior to their relocating to SF. Just rechecked the posts, and don’t recall anyone saying Thompson was a cheat, only that cheating was prevalent at that time… kinda like it is now, right?

    • 3bagger's avatar 3bagger said, on August 17, 2010 at 12:24 pm

Definitely one of the most famous, but not only because of the actual hit and the Giants circumstances in the penant race, but because the audio was ever caught in the first place. The video footage does not have audio. What we all see, or hear, in that highlight is a recording that was made by accident when some random fan was recording the radio broadcast. If it wasn’t for the call, it’s not nearly as famous.

This sad event is a timely reminder for the import placed on this weekend’s series. NYGs were 13.5 back on Aug. 11, 1951 …

MLB did not outlaw the alleged sign-stealing – if it mattered – until the 1960s, so Splashers are about as dialed in as birthers chasing Obama’s past. Ken Burns’ documentary, Baseball, had one of the better segments on Thomson, the ’51 race, and the three-game playoff.

“Now it is done. Now the story ends. And there is no way to tell it. The art of fiction is dead. Reality has strangled invention. Only the utterly impossible, the inexpressibly fantastic, can ever be plausible again.”

Alley, I would consider the Gibson homerun the most famous of all time. I’ve seen more replays of that homerun than any other. Hank Aaron’s 715th probably the second most famous, with the two goofballs running onto the field. And another that gets replayed a lot is Reggie Jackson hitting his third homerun in that World Series game, off a hapless Charlie Hough.

  65. Unca Chuck's avatar Unca Chuck said, on August 17, 2010 at 4:33 pm

Yeah, my baseball life was pretty much born and weaned around that call from Russ Hodges . . .

    From the net . . .

This famous moment in sports broadcasting was nearly lost. This was in an era before all game broadcasts were recorded. However, in his autobiography, Hodges related how a Brooklyn fan, excited over what appeared to be a certain Dodger victory, hooked up his home tape recorder to his radio. The fan wanted to capture Hodges “crying.” Instead, he recorded history; the next day, he called Hodges and said, “You have to have this tape.”

“ Bobby Thomson… up there swingin’… He’s had two out of three, a single and a double, and Billy Cox is playing him right on the third-base line… One out, last of the ninth… Branca pitches… Bobby Thomson takes a strike called on the inside corner… Bobby hitting at .292… He’s had a single and a double and he drove in the Giants’ first run with a long fly to center… Brooklyn leads it 4-2…Hartung down the line at third not taking any chances… Lockman with not too big of a lead at second, but he’ll be runnin’ like the wind if Thomson hits one… Branca throws… [audible sound of bat meeting ball]
There’s a long drive… it’s gonna be, I believe…THE GIANTS WIN THE PENNANT!! THE GIANTS WIN THE PENNANT! THE GIANTS WIN THE PENNANT! THE GIANTS WIN THE PENNANT! Bobby Thomson hits into the lower deck of the left-field stands! The Giants win the pennant and they’re goin’ crazy, they’re goin’ crazy! HEEEY-OH!!!” [ten-second pause for crowd noise]

I don’t believe it! I don’t believe it! I do not believe it! Bobby Thomson… hit a line drive… into the lower deck… of the left-field stands… and this blame place is goin’ crazy! The Giants! Horace Stoneham has got a winner! The Giants won it… by a score of 5 to 4… and they’re pickin’ Bobby Thomson up… and carryin’ him off the field!

Notice that one of, if not THE most famous calls in sports history is in active voice. Much as I like Miller, he and other announcers rely far too much on passive voice to make their key calls. It makes the call much less emphatic and dulls the moment. What if Hodges said “The Giants Have Won the Pennant, the Giants Have Won the Pennant….”? Miller essentially said that in passive voice in 2002 vs. the Cards as David Bell slid past home, and nobody much remembers that call…

Snarkk: Grammar lesson. Both of your examples are active voice. If you say, “The pennant was won by the Giants”! Or: “The pennant has been won by the Giants!” or “The pennant is now being won by the Giants!” you have passive voice. Your issue is tense. Your Miller example is a form of past tense. Russ Hodges exclaimed in the present tense. Persnickety me.

This is the first time I have seen Guillen swing. Looks like he has a lot of umph still in that swing!

Looks like he is in great shape as well.

Why worry about Panda’s weight? He is going to end up at first more than likely. I say he backs up Posey as well next year to keep another bat like Burrell on the roster.

Uribe can play third. We just need a legit young SS with range. I don’t think Crawford will be ready and not sure Burriss is a the answer at short.

We just need Panda regaining his swing next year and not fucking with his head and guilt trips on his weight.

I could care less about what panda weighs– I’m not fuckin him so why should I care? He mashed last year at what is probably 10 lbs more than what he’s at right now. Being fat isn’t what’s fueling this near-season-long slump..

If you don’t care about Panda’s overweight and hitting, whatever. It doesn’t help his fielding, range and footwork, that is for damn sure, and doesn’t do his knees any good, either. There’s no guilt trip involved. He’s a damn big leaguer, so he should handle the minor point of getting his ass in shape to improve his game and prolong his career…

But Snarkk, what if that weight level is who he is??

We know that young hitters struggle their second full year. He now needs to adjust to the league. What are his prep sessions like? Is he digesting film on pitchers. Actually Bonds could be a big help to Panda in the off-season learning about being a professional hitter.

We also know that he had woman and eye issues his year that has taken his head out of the game. Seems like he has been swinging better of late…

His knees? He’s fuckjng 23 or whatever, he’s not gonna be a fat guy with knee problems for 10-20 yrs. And he moves just fine, he’s a fat guy who can run- watch him motor after a foul pop sometime. I can buy the argument that he’d be slightly quicker reacting to a line shot down 3rd if he drops 30 lbs but I don’t think his body size has anything to do with his hitting slump this year….
