A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Timmy’s Hair and the MAIN reason he’s Been Losing Lately……

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on August 26, 2010

I’ve had to do a lot of driving this week, I’ve been catching more of the Idiot and Mac show than usual in the mornings. One of them is gone for the week, not sure which one. Anyway, the remaining idiot has spent a lot of time this week saying he’s getting a TON of emails from fans that are upset about Timmy’s hair and identifying that as his main problem. I know we give him grief about his hair but does anyone here think it’s contributing to his recent streak of mediocrity?

Personally, I don’t think that has anything to do with it and can’t believe there are fans out there who think his hair has become his downfall. But Mac (or Murph) has been talking about it all week. Obsessing on it, really…….

Timmy’s got bigger fish to fry than how often he visits his hair stylist. Tomorrow’s pitcher is Barry Enright. Besides pitching very effectively this year (he’s a “6 inning guy” with a nice ERA of 2.73) he’s also the guy who was 2 for 2 against Tim on July 25th. I hope he’s devised a plan to somehow get Babe Ruth out……

Here’s why Tim has had problems recently: The fact is, Tim isn’t pitching THAT badly. He’s often pitching good enough to give his team a chance to win. But his starts have become a distraction and it’s affecting the focus of the team. That’s why they aren’t hitting in his starts. Everyone is watching the radar gun instead of focusing on their job. I’m expecting the same thing to happen tomorrow–Tim pitches ok but still loses to an inferior pitcher who appears better than he is against our unfocused group. The same thing used to happen to Zito starts a few years ago. I know it seems like I’m giving Tim a free pass here, but I’m not. I’m just raising the possibility that other things are contributing to his recent string of losses. Loose teams who play tight behind you, a tightness YOU brought on with your less-than-CyYoung performances, are not known for being  very productive offenses. Once everyone stops looking at the radar gun (including Tim) and once he gets better location with all his pitches, THAT’S when he’s going to come out of this and start winning games again. His fastball is gone, at least for the rest of this year and at least as we once knew it to be when he first came up. Everyone needs to accept that and just start playing good, focused baseball again……

I heard some of the callers to Mychael Urban last night. Unbelievable how awful a lot of them were. Some had trouble even framing a coherent thought. One guy called in steaming angry about Sandoval’s error in the ninth, wanting to blame the whole loss on Sandoval. Urban patiently explained to the guy that Sandoval had 4 hits, and was one of the reasons the Giants were able to make a comeback; and that, in fact, the Giants team had committed 5 errors in the game, so some other guys had contributed to the loss, too. You could literally hear the air go out of the caller’s balloon. The guy said: “Uh……yeah…..that’s true…..” Wow, it never occurred to the caller to think deeper about the game than an elementary school kid would.
I tell ya- whatever we think about each other on the Flap- everyone here is Einstein compared to the callers on KNBR.

  2. zumarust's avatar zumarust said, on August 26, 2010 at 7:43 am

And the thing about Tim, I believe, is that those callers on KNBR want to punish Tim, like a parent taking away a kid’s IPOD, for misbehaving.
Tim, until you pitch better, you can’t have rock-star hair.

I could be wrong, zum, but most on the Flap don’t even seem to be type that would even *consider* calling a KNBR host. Sure, I listen when I’m driving but and I love the Giants broadcasts but other than Tom Tolbert, they all work my nerves.

You’re on to something there Flav. It’s hard to get a handle on, though. There’s a psychological distraction, mos def. Maybe winning back to back Cy Youngs so early in your career (and life) is too much on the old melon. Same with Zito for a while. Face it, Zito had one real good career year but overall, he’s never been an “Ace”. His Cy Young brought him an ongoing rep in Oakland that he never really lived up to. And he knew it better than any of us. Not till he signed that huge contract with the Giants and it distracted him did the kids finally point out the emporer had no clothes. Now he’s back to his old semi-competent self, which is all he ever really was, and Lincecum will come around as well. But Lincecum *is* an ace and will be again

Flav, I don’t really think all the hitters (or fielders, when they are on defense), are tracking the radar gun when Timmy’s pitching. They are focused on their defense. Recent events notwithstanding, this team isn’t murderer’s row. I mean, it’s not like this only happens to Timmy. It’s happened to Snatchez, Cain, and Zito numerous times THIS season. I guess we’re just not used to Tim giving up as much as he has.

It’s hard to say if he’d cough up a lead a la Sanchez the other day because he hasn’t GOTTEN a lead to cough up. He went 4 strong innings last start, but got no help from the O.

As far as the callers go, they ARE 5th graders, for the most part. You can’t fault their vociferousness in how they get their points across, no matter how lame or misguided they are. I was explaining the same thing to my son yesterday. He was pissed about the Sanodoval error as well as I was, but I explained to him that Panda is usually pretty sure handed, and his bat had a lot to do with the comeback. It’s easy to get caught up in the emotion, but a game, like a season, is filled with plays, and games, that slip away.

  6. Unca Chuck's avatar Unca Chuck said, on August 26, 2010 at 8:28 am

4 strong innings before the wheels fell off, I should say.

Wow. I admit to being stunned when I logged on to SFGate this morning and saw that the Giants had nearly staged one of the most amazing wins ever. Last I had seen, they were down 10-5 late and I figured it was over. What a bittersweet game, though. Great comeback and something to take positives away from, but damn. Tough way to lose it.

BF, of course Lincecum’s hair is the reason he stinks right now. Don’t you remember the story of Samson? This is Samson is reverse.

    J/K

I agree with what you wrote to a certain extent. I think his command is the biggest issue, as it is with most pitchers who struggle. But to say he isn’t pitching that badly is off, I think. Given how high the bar is set for him, both by his record and numbers and by fan’s expectations, and how far he’s tumbled lately, I think he is pitching badly. The drop-off is troubling. All pitchers go through periods of mediocrity, but he seems lost to me right now. Given where he was, that’s more than a little shocking.

I think Roy Oswalt had some good points. I think Tim has fallen in love with his changeup and throws it too much. He needs to get back to establishing the heater early and more often. I also think he’s going to have to reassess his off-season regimen and commit more to getting stronger and improving his fitness. So far, I thknk he has relied solely on his natural talent. He keeps doing that, he’ll keep fading down the stretch.

Whether or not his velocity is completely necessary to his success, I find it disconcerting that he’s lost this much off his FB.

  8. willied's avatar willied said, on August 26, 2010 at 8:49 am

SF SP numbers are still pretty damn good, just not as good in Tim’s case as what we ( or him for that matter) are used to. He’s admitted to struggling with his mechanics, something he hasn’t done all that much of since taking over a rotation spot. You can trot the cliches of baseball being a humbling game or a game of adjustments, but ultimately it’s up to him to figure it out. His fastball is fine, imo, but command of it is not. Even if his fastball has less velocity or movement, it’s up to him to keep it out of a guy’s happy zone.

Roy Halladay twice in consecutive innings last night gave up a run after Phillies had tied the game and lost 3-2 to the Astros, at home. Wainwright has lost twice in a row, and STL just lost again to the freaking Pirates, worst team in baseball. Cliff Lee has struggled with Texas. Stuff happens to the best.

  9. Unca Chuck's avatar Unca Chuck said, on August 26, 2010 at 9:00 am

The big thing is, he’s NOT getting pounded into the dust. He’s getting dinked and dunked a lot of the time. He’s losing velocity early in games. He wasn’t doing that even in July. Which means he loses faith in the fastball. He isn’t striking guys out like he was earlier. Guys sit on the change and put it in play. Some of this is baseball. Guys find holes.

IS it conditioning? Or lack thereof? Could be. HE says it’s mechanics, but he’s usually got his fastball to start games. He’s been pitching in hot weather his last few starts. He’s notoriously a cool-weather guy. He’s in a bit of a slump. To say the hitters are getting tight because they are waiting for the shoe to fall is possible, but it soulds like bullshit to me. I thinkit has more to do with him tiring. Long season, dog days, hot weather, fading stuff.

“Hitting is contagious”. The old adage was repeated by one of the Giants yesterday or the day before and i’ve previously employed the saw a couple times this season. Off day today. Point is, these guys are still playing at home and they are facing a kid pitcher for the Snakes tomorrow night. Look what they did to the Reds’ kid pitchers, including a couple pretty good ones. So if the off-day doesn’t snap the string, this crew should get to Enright too. That happens and Timmy could be a bit sloppy and the Gigantes end up winning 11 to 7.

Needless to say, i wanna see Timmy get it back. Oswalt is probably right about the conditioning thing. Command, control, deception and painting the corners made a pretty good living for that feller who was pitching for the Cubbies in the NLCS some years back and happened to load the bases and served one up to Will Clark. Guy by the name of Maddox. Timmy doesn’t get it back together this season, maybe he should think of hiring ol Greg as his personal training coach.

Should the magic happen and Timmy throws at least a decent game tomorrow night, it’s my intention to go over there to the Splash and post the following message: “Timmy reverts to form”.

Conditioning does seem like a factor now and maybe he’s mentally fatigued as well. You never used to see him get visibly frustrated or angry.

  16. snark's avatar snark said, on August 26, 2010 at 9:36 am

Don’t forget Timmy should have at least 3 more wins due to the Giants throwing them away earlier this season. The other day on CSNBA, I saw that Timmy was playing long, very long toss with Zitoid. Pretty much from the 3rd base line to right center warning track. Word was he had gotten away from that, which he used to do all the time. According to the pitching guru Urban interviewed a few days ago, that’s the key to keeping arm strength and getting mileage up on the fastball — long toss well over 180 feet. The dude consults with a few MLB clubs, so he’s apparently not a charlatan. He argued that even a month of regular long toss now would add back 2-3 mph on Timmy’s fastball and increase stamina in the latter innings. If we see some improvement Friday night, Giants should hire they guy…

So much of the game at the pro level is mental and Lincecum has been rattled. His confidence is shaken. Probably for the first time ever. Conditioning is likely a part of it too. I think he’ll get a second wind as the weather cools down.

Denny yells at him to cut the fucking hair ( in jest, I think) and I echoed it once, in jest for sure. But it’s not the worst idea. Not because he looks like a hippy or something like that, or that he doesn’t have the right to wear his hair as he chooses. No, it’s because he looks like a wet sack of shit when he starts to sweat, which is like 3 pitches in. At least fucking tie it. The weight of his wet hair probably takes 5 MPH of the heater.

You’re conveniently forgetting the 3 games the pen lost for him earlier in the season when he left while ahead. He didn’t “deserve” to lose those games. Why the animus towards him? He carried the staff spear the prior two seasons. He’s suckage lately, but doesn’t deserve Zito style disdain…

5-1 Houston now in the 8th. Still wanna place that bet on a baseball game?

Once they got Utley and Howard back, who didn’t think the Phils were going to roll? Meanwhile, Houston looses Berkman and Oswalt and sweeps them in their house, holding them to 7 runs in 4 games. Bizarre.

  25. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on August 26, 2010 at 12:43 pm

Michael: Those games Timmy shouldda won were at a time when his ERA was much, much lower than at present. Sure, ERA and wins may have roughed out somewhat recently, but if the current LU had been behind him before the Break he’d probably have 15 victories by now.

Snarkk: If Timmy would stick to sativa and induce the other team to puff on indica, he’d be all full of energy and on top of his game while the opposition would be looking for the nearest couch.

  26. Michael's avatar Michael said, on August 26, 2010 at 12:52 pm

It’s still bullshit.. He hardly “deserves” 15 fucking wins. You can make a much better case for Sanchez deserving more wins and even Mr. Choke, Zitman,.
Tim’s run support is 4.85 RPG, he doesn’t “deserve” any more than he has. Why all the excuses for him? It appears he simply slacked on off season conditioning and mentally can’t handle struggling (yet). Fuck him: tie back the locks, bow the shoulders, and boy up for your team…

Actually, I think the weight of Lincecum’s sweat-wet hair is an essential part of his mechanics. Tinker with that pendulum and his balance will be fucked; the two-seam fastball will go everywhere but near the strike zone and the change up will spin in tamely over the plate as fat and flat as a BP “FB.”

    • James's avatar James said, on August 26, 2010 at 1:15 pm

You may hear this echoed by Kruk tonight. It is on par with the keeping the chest up analysis that “explained” Lincecum’s success over the first few innings his last start.

      • xootsuit's avatar xootsuit said, on August 26, 2010 at 1:24 pm

Well, duh! The weight of the hair assists him when he tilts his head back; that weighted tilt in turn helps keep the chest up, which means that the shoulders are square as he begins to pull the ball up out of the invisible bucket of highspeed tonic on the ground behind him. I saw it all on a SI video two years ago. . . . .

As per my previous posts i’m all with Timmy improving his conditioning. As for deserving wins, sure, some of the other starters would have done a whole lot better earlier on with better support too. Tie down the hair for the game? Sure, it might help. Hell, as far as i’m concerned he could hire a personal stylist to braid it and loop it around his head. Of course if he did that, he might have to borrow one of Bochy’s caps.

It’s clear what’s being talked about, Looie. The notion that past success breeds or should breed less *expectation* or less *scrutiny* or less *criticism* is laughable. And coming from Snarkkles, hypocritical beyond all belief. Yeah, I recall last year very well:
Snarkk:”come on guys, Renteria is a former All-Star, a Gold Glover, he’s had a lot of success in the league. Let’s not get upset about him trending down a little”…

Funny. That’s *exactly* what *I* posted over here once (though I didn’t use the term trending down) about Renteria. But I don’t remember if it was this year or last year. And out of morbid curiosity, I checked out that blog twin provided to see what barryforever posted for a team he actually liked. I read about 4 of his posts. It was weird reading attempts at actual constructive comments. But bottom line? Still boring

From Baggs postgame notes that posted at 2pm today…

Brandon Belt hit a home run in his second Triple-A at-bat last night. I don’t know if he’ll be another Mel Ott, but Belt’s special season continues.

The Giants had planned to make Belt a September call-up. I think that is still in the works, but the lack of 40-man space is more of an issue now that the Giants have acquired Jose Guillen and Cody Ross.

Don’t forget, the Giants also must find a way to get Dontrelle Willis on the 40-man roster, if they deem him ready to contribute in some capacity.

  75. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on August 26, 2010 at 6:17 pm

At the time i too questioned the choice Bochy made of sending in Zito. My choice would have been Cain. One inning of serious stuff would not have taken much outta Matt the Horse. He had pitched more recently, by one game, than the Zitsmeister, but would have been less apt to put the runners on base for Votto.

A few days back i commented on the drop to the 11 man staff when Ross was picked up. My hope was that the starters could go long enough in home games, that 6 relievers would suffice till 9-1. But then who could have predicted the heatwave on the Bay, or that Bochy burned a couple of the relievers before that 8th inning rally changed the entire game.

But baseball is baseball and crazy shit happens. Some crazy shit i would like to see continue is the awakening of the team’s bats. Franchez and Sandoval stay hot and it will only take one or two more hitters to come through among Torres, Posey, Huff and Uribe, maybe even Burrell and Ross and the Giants cruise through the Snakes and Rox like shit through a goose. Of course a bit of positive mound presence, particularly from a couple of Cy starters, would help.

Four of six for the rest of the home-stand. I could live with that. Greed gets ahold of me and i’d want more.
