A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

What is it with Colorado and DEVASTATING losses?

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on August 31, 2010

I couldn’t catch the entire game last night, I bounced in the 7th. I woke up and did my “read the blog” thing to find out what happened. Ugh. That move has turned into bad luck for us, it always seems we suffer some type of excruciating loss when I do that…..

It was nice to read the Merc and see that several players stopped by Ross’ locker to offer support, it sounds like this was just a freak play that could have happened to anyone…….

Brian Wilson is your closer who is strong as an ox. He’s an all star. You bring him into that situation every single time. I’ve got no problem with that move whatsoever. Dirrrrty is always a pitch away from disaster anyway. Did anyone want to see him lose the game in the 9th? Exactly. The 9th inning is Wilson’s in a situation like that, period……..

The only good thing that ever comes from me missing games like this is that it doesn’t leave the same pain in my soul that watching it would have done…….

I fell asleep maybe second inning, stirred top of the 8th knew we had a lead and Dirty was dealing. Fell back asleep fully confident and then awake at 2 am to the horror of the score and watching the top of the 9th.

Bochy is damned if you do and damned if you don’t going with Sanchez to start and then bringing in the closer to shut the door.

Yeah Nate probably should have been in right but Sanchez should have had him nailed at third. I saw a bunch of you were ridong Gonzalez and his road hitting. The guy is a stud and he came back to bite us.

He hit a routine fly to RF. And no one was “riding” him, unless showing the fucking numbers is riding him. Fact is, he was schooled last night, got off the hook on a misplayed broken bat bloop. As usual ,Room Fuckwad for the Big Head.

Franchez should have scored in the first but his leg deformity really hampers him.

I hit the sack early too Flav and I just read through the posts . . . Today, all of us have the benefit of reading ths Sports page and perhaps have a bit more perspective on the Ross fielding play, which we might not have had watching the televised game last night.

I played baseball in HS and I have to hand it to zumarust (who must have also played a little bit of baseball), because he absolutely nailed it in regard to his post last night regarding Ross . . .

“I don’t think Ross should be crucified for that play. It was just a freak play. The bat splintered in half. 99.9% of the time the outfielder is going to have to come in to get a flare, and Ross was trying to make a great play and take away the flare hit. This was the .1% of the time when the ball is still hit hard with a bat that was broken in half. Their best power hitter batting. Ross should have factored that in, but in the heat of the moment, he read too much in the bat breaking.”

Anywho, tough loss and hopefully, the G-Men and Bum can come back this evening. Go Giants!

The most disappointing thing is I think that makes 4 eerrors for Franchez in what 4 games?

Are we going to be lucky enough that the Padres keep spiraling? This was the moment to make up ground against them and we could be 2 gammes out if with a couple breaks. Very frustrating. I cant say Nate makes that play in right, but I think that was Ross’ only second start in right. The key to playing in right aat ATT is not to let the ball get over your head in right-center no matter what. The right play off the bat would have been to break back (wsan’t hjje playing Gonzalez way tyoo shallow as well?) immediaately, but I think we are just snake bit against these fuckers. Last thing we need is for the ROckies to crawl back into this race.

No one wants to say these are must-win games, but I think these next two are about as close as you get to must-win…we cant give the Rockies any life.

the innings are taking their toll on that young SD starting staff, as I said they would back in June. They’ve lost five in a row AND they have a brutal 10 game road stretch coming up in the middle of Sept. They’re done.

If SD continues to unravel, Colo will be in it, or fighting to be in it, too. Those series at Colo and at SD in Sept. will be huge. Fuck. Sept. starts tomorrow. Summer’s ending. The whole damn season is narrowing down to a finite number of pitches and swings. Pressure has a clarifying effect, don’t you think?

Did anybody catch Posey in the dugout last after the game????

I could not tell, it was the quickest shot of Ross walking through the dugout and then you see a flash of Posey pounding something in the dugout. At first I thought he slammed his helmet, but after watching the replay 30 times, I think he punched the shit out of the bench with his bloody right hand as well…it looked like Sanchez was sitting on the nench with someone else (you could not see their faces) and Sanchez points to his hand to indicate I think that Posey was punching the shit out of his hand.

I love the fire, but not the brightest thing to do.

But if others are taking notice on this roster, this guy is going to be leader on this team for the next 10 years. I love the passion. Diid anyone else see that? Any stories if he may have hurt his hand?

Keep dreaming GH . . . Flav has the best chance of catching me due to having only one batting/pitching category under 6 (as I do too) . . . You and Chi have 3 categories below 6. I doubt you can rectify that in a month.

Looks like Colo is already right there. They have SD this weekend, catching the Pads at just the right time.
But the Would’ve, should’ve could’ve is getting real fucking old. As are words like hopefully and maybe. Having to hope the other team falls apart is not how you want to get to the playoffs. You go out and take it by winning these crucial matchups. And they aren’t getting it done. Time is running out. There is no ‘bouncing back”.
At this rate, those series in SD and Colo will be irrelevant. Or they will be forced to sweep both series.

  12. willied's avatar willied said, on August 31, 2010 at 8:09 am

Two good things tho: great effort from JS for a solid 8 and the best pitched game for a starter in a long while, and Rox O continues to struggle on the road, where they are just not the same team. They didn’t hit shit all night, including the triple. SF hit 3 balls off Street harder than that.

To get to 18-12 we are going to have to win 2 of 3 anyway. Start tonight and use last night as a springboard to bounce back. SD is ripe for taking.

GH, Yeah i saw that Posey outburst on the bench.I thought it was great. He has the fire in his belly that every Giant should have right now,but not all show.He whacked that bench at least 3 times maybe more with his fist, couldn’t tell if he was punching his equipment bag which would have soften the blows, but i’m sure he’s alright.Maybe he was just extra pissed off for making the final out on his liner back to Street, but hell he shouldn’t be,he knocked in the only run the anemic offense could produce. He should have saved his punches for Bochy’s face for pulling Sanchez.I still say Sanchez going after Gonzalez the lefty would have been the right call,he was 0-11 against Dirty instead of a worn down Wilson.Or if not Sanchez, then why not your lefty specialist Lopez up and ready to face Gonzo to keep Fowler close to 1st and play for a DP.

    Posted this to the wriong one . . . . .

Fuck, Dennis. I thought I overreacted. Did that hurt? Yeah, it hurt like a motherfucker. Did it kill the season? Fuck no. The good news is Sanchez pitched a great game. The bad news? Well, the errors. Ross picked a bad time to misjudge that fly ball. Hey, it happens. It’s the curse of Giant RFers. From Jack Clark to Candy Maldonado to Jose Cruz Jr to now Cody Ross, there appears to be a RFer’s curse that strikes at the worst possible moments.

And, yeah, whoever mentioned it is right. The dimensions of the dugouts pretty much ensure that every ball that gets by a 1st or 3rd baseman guarantees and extra 90′ since the dugout openings are in the line of fire. Not well thought out. They ned to put gates up at least.

In the end, it’s one game. 30 games to go. They have 5 to make up on SD, 1.5 to make up on Philly. The Giants face Mrs. Rogers today. They should pound the fuck out of him with little problem. So, something like 7-2.

One last thing. Someone get Freddie a smaller pair of fucking pants. He looks like he’s running around in his goddamn pajamas out there. It slows him down.

Was in the RF view box last night. (You guys might have seen me with my son wearing his home made knit panda hat during Pablo’s AB in the 4th.) Anyway, Wednesday’s loss against the Reds was a tough one after coming back from 9 down. Last night was a cut my heart out with a spoon.

It was hard to believe my eyes during Gonzales’s tripple. It seemed that everything that could possibly go wrong on that play absolutely did. The bat broke, Cody got the wrong break, Franchez’s three hopper, Panda not being able to stop it, Wilson not being there to back it up…and then as I saw the ball get by Pablo I was already screaming NOOOOO! as I knew it was going into the dugout and the run would score. I completely walked away from my family. When I came back about 30 seconds later, my wife gave me the look like, “I’m sorry, but I don’t have the words.” She was right, there was nothing she could’ve said to ease the pain of that one. Lucky for me, I picked up my 20 month old, he looks into my eyes and says, “Jye’ns” in only the way he can. I backed down off the ledge.

Kat, agree to some extent with your 9:45. Bonehead surely had the plan to put Sanchy out until somebody got on, then bring in BW. OK, in theoryexcept Sanchy had gotten Gonzalez out all night. I would have kept him in for Gonzalez. Next, if you do take out Sanchy after the walk, OK fine, I can still live with that as a by the book move. But, WTF not put in Gomez — he’s been dealing since he got here, and it continues Gonzalez’ look all night at another nasty lefty. I thought that’s why you have a nasty lefty, get a nasty lefty hitter out at crunch time. Good chance of getting a DP grounder. The broken bat thing was a fluke, I don’t blame Ross. The Franchez throw and BW not backing up was the clusterF. But, I just wish Bonehead once in a goddam while would throw away the damn book, and go with something a little out of the box. And, going lefty v. lefty there isn’t even that far outta the box, especially when your closer is tired from the 5 out stint the day before. Was Lopez even warming up…?

    • 3bagger's avatar 3bagger said, on August 31, 2010 at 11:26 am

I hear ya Snarkk. Taking out Sanchez needed to happen after the four straight balls after two strikes. It was pretty obvious to everyone in the building that something got in his head as those pitches were nowhere near the strikezone. Before the bottom of the eight, I was wondering who would come in for 9 with BW doing the 5 out thing the day before. I was glad to see Sanchez bat and then start nine, but was calling for Bochy with the walk. I was wondering if BW had it in him, but he did have quite a bit of time off before Sunday. Would have liked to see a lefty, but he’s the closer and if he’s rested enough, you throw him out there.

The defense is what’s really sinking the Giants right now.Once tied with the Reds and Twins with the best pct in baseball at .990.they now have dropped to 5th while committing 11 errors in their last 7 games alone. This can’t happen down the stretch for any team that’s contending. Giants are 57-32 ( .640) when playing error-free ball and 15-28 (.349) when committing 1 or more errors.

I don’t get the Franchez D meltdown. He’s been great all year on D (no errors, and getting it done on more than just routine plays), then as he finally starts hitting, his D dips. Last night’s haste in turning around the relay caused the bad grip and horrendous 4 hopper throw to 3rd. Hate that dippin D…

Posey is a a stuipid fuckwad for punching out the bench,. Look, admiraton has gone too far when you are celebrating a dumbshit act. Passion is not the sme as brain dead. It was dumb. Say that and leave it at that.
As far as the pulling Sanchez, let me get this striaght. Ross made an eror on a play wehere Wilson fucking blew Gonzo’s bat off, and bringing Wilson in was a mistake? AS i Said yeasterday, the fat ass couch potato second guessing crowd has the luxury of 20/20 hindsight. After Dirty walked Fowler after geting ahead, and not CLOSE on two fastballs, he HAD to be pulled. Period. An additional fator that Room Fuckwad didn’t consider-Sanchez is horribly slow to first, Wilson very fast. Fowler would probably have been going if Dirty stays in.
And Snarkk: I know they all look alike but we don’t have a Gomez.
And to Wilson being tired: he pitched Aug 25, then the 29th. Even with 30+ pitches Sunday, he’s worked a heavier load than that dozens of tmes. The need, indeed the obsession with finding fault with Bochy on nearly every mover, is patholgical, you boys need serious help.

    • TellItGoodbye's avatar TellItGoodbye said, on August 31, 2010 at 12:26 pm

Yes, Sanchez had to go after that blow-up against no-stick Fowler. I would have liked to have seen a hitter for Sanchez in the 8th IF, as we now know, Bochy was going to remove him in the case of a leadoff baserunner anyway, and IF, as we know, Bochy already knew Wilson was good to go. Why not try to get something going in the 8th and bring in Wilson from the start? I can see both sides.

Of course, one might see irony in the fact that J. Sanchez was the only batter of the 7th or 8th not to strikeout, right? And Wilson gave up a well-struck ball, albeit with a broken bat, on a 2-strike pitch as well. So perhaps none of it would have made any difference.

  27. Michael's avatar Michael said, on August 31, 2010 at 12:20 pm

And let’s see, Wilson was too spent after pitching once siince August 25 yet Gomez, uh I mean Pancho, er: *Lopez* HAD to be in after pitching the 22nd, 23rd, 24th, 25th, 28th, and 29th? Idiots.

Left OR Right doesn’t make any difference to Gonzales

    LHP: .323, 13hrs, .617slg
    RHP: .328, 16,.583

Bochy looked at that and said fuck it, I’m going with my #1 guy.

  29. Michael's avatar Michael said, on August 31, 2010 at 12:37 pm

Fact is, Bochy could not win with this crowd regardless of the decision. It is an ongoing idiocy here that confuses whether it was a poor decision with whether the outcome was what was hoped for. There IS a difference. Let’s use something some of you might have actual experience with: the babysitter. You have two choices: the young lady with excellent references, good school grades, a record of caring and punctuality. The other candidate has a record of tardiness, thievery, sloth, and arson. If you hire girl one and she burns the house down, it would be terrible but it could not be said that you could resonably have foreseen the disaster. If you hire girl 2, uh, you deserve the second guessing…

I’m wondering which Bumgarner we will see this evening. He needs to recover from the first poor outing of his brief career, i.e., he gave up eight runs and seven hits – three homers – in 2 2-3 innings of the 12-11, 12-inning loss to Cincinnati last week.

Rogers (2-2, 5.66) was just as bad against Atlanta last week . . . He surrendered seven runs over 1 2-3 innings. His offense bailed him out, though, battling back for a 12-10 win. Rogers also sucked the last time he had a start in San Francisco, giving up five runs, five hits and four walks over four innings of a 6-1 defeat May 1 (although he was far better in relief July 4 at Coors Field, pitching four scoreless innings while striking out five).

Yeah Blade…Those were fun days.Ray Stevens and Pat Patterson were the two most hated villains always ready to cause the most shit in the ring. One other event Pepper tried in the ring was with a 8ft ladder and have all these wrestlers like Bearcat Wright,Kenji Shubya,The flying Red Bastien,Mr.Saito,Bobo Brazil,Pedro Morales, Stevens, and Patterson would climb to the top of the ladder and jump down on Pepper’s stomach, so Pepper could show them all how tough his stomach was.Lucky Haystack Calhoun wasn’t there along with his 600lb frame, though i doubt any thing less then a crane would have held him,or Pepper would have ended up like salsa.
All obliged and nothing fazed Pepper at all, until Stevens the villain that he was, decided to land a knee on Pepper’s throat causing him to jump around the ring like a Mexican jumping bean.Class act was Stevens.

Loved watching the Bay Bombers, Charlie O’ Connell , the Blond Amazon Joan Weston,Dynamite Tony Roman and his wife Carol” Peanuts” Meyer always entertaining.Charlie O leading the jam, takes out 2 players and whips Roman through as they score 3 points.Peanut Meyer goes between the legs of an opponent to score.Great stuff.

Believe it or not, there’s been a recent resurgence of roller derby recently. Not that it could replicate the old version, but the bay Area Derby Girls roll at Ft. Mason and Oakland. I haven’t been to an event, but I have a few friends on the teams and they it’s a guys dream. Fast women beating the shit out of eachother.

As I said some weeks ago, there’s something to be said for having a team in the race. Keeps you focused, on the safe side of the line between sanity and insanity. I posted a link to a Seattle news article showing just how crazy Mariners fans have become. Here’s a story about Pirates fans gone mad:

    We’re relatively lucky.

Yeah, I’m definitely the only poster who could actually do the line ups and pitching changes for Bochy. The criteria is that it has to be a line up that Bochy might REASONABLY be expected to use and a pitching change, ditto. Until you review the posts here you might not realize that there are about 7 guys on the 25 man who would not have played or pitched an inning this year if LUs could be done by Room B. And the other 18 would be dead from exhaustion..

Bumgarner needs to keep the Rockies in the yard tonight. 12 HR allowed in his short (83 IP) career.
Tonight would be a good time to get his first W at home as well. Farmer John gets the job done.
    6-3 good guys.

Kat, you reminded me of more wrestlers I thought I had forgotten . . . Yep, Pat Patterson was Ray Stevens tag team partner (Blond Bombers) and they were the best during their 1960s heyday in San Francisco under promoter Roy Shire. Kenji Shibuya also had a lot of success as a tag team with Mitsu Arakawa . . . OK, back to baseball.

3bag. You’re right about the roller derby rebound. I live in South Lake Tahoe and they have a team up here Tahoe Derby Dames. My neighbor’s been to a contest, said it’s good action. Apparently there’s always an “after party” for both teams at one of great local bars. Gotta be worth trying. Go Giants
