A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

An Improbable 3 Game Win Streak

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on September 7, 2010

Look back at all three games, how did we win ANY of them?  It’s almost as if each game is just a collection of individual, separate moments. And yet somehow, each moment connects to one another at the end for a victory. Nate Schierholtz comes off the bench clearly with his head not in the game, and gets picked off. Idiot. So, of course, Nate wins the game for us. Hero.

I honestly can’t remember a season that had this many entertaining games. And it’s not just that we are in a pennant race, these games have just been unbelievable…..

There have been a lot of documented things that didn’t work out this year: Timmy, Pablo, Wellenmeyer as the 5, DeRosa hurt, Rowand sucking, Franchez hovering just above the brink of *below averageness*….the list is a mile long. And yet we’re about to take over first place. How?

This is a gutty-ass team that refuses to ever give up. The season has evolved to the point where each player knows someone on the team will step up and deliver–the only question is who it’s gonna be. That’s a very cool place to be in September…….

Edd, I confess to going over the top with the doomers and gloomers and LU bashing and general ignorance of how things work. The LU bashing started my spiral into insanity. You know what ( example) : Travis was NEVER going to start against LHers. I’m his biggest fan here and even I realized this. But back when he actually was getting some playing time, sure enough some idiot would go postal because he wasn’t starting against a LHer. Or Rowand now: he’s getting the starts a 5th OFer SHOULD get,no more no less. There’s a not a goddamn mothefucking thing to bitch about with that.

  2. Michael's avatar Michael said, on September 7, 2010 at 3:44 pm

Again, the LU bashers are behind: Guillen has been running well in the outfield. He’s made a play in foul territory and one deep in the RF gap Saturday that he really ran down. Range wise, Burrell is the far greater liability as we saw yesterday. Pablo has had some problems with his hips ( insert a Spash-level “Fat Panda” remark here), that’s more likely why he’s sitting than a poor night yesterday.

I would be up for a start or two for Ishi the next coupla weeks, against RHs. Huff needs a blow. Maybe tomorrow. Also, Posey looks like he could use a break right now, either on the pine or on first, or both on consecutive games. I know Whiteside is a wasted bat, but every once in a while he makes contact…

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 7, 2010 at 4:23 pm

Casilla is a frikkin strike machine compared to what Willis has been through. Dontrelle shouldn’t and won’t get near this stretch drive, IMO. Not when you’ve got Lopez and Affeldt and Runzler. Coach him up to be a reliever over the winter, see what happens next ST. He’s not on the 40 anyway…

Why not start him once in place of Zito, just for the hell of it.

  11. Flavor's avatar bigflavor said, on September 7, 2010 at 4:40 pm

Bumgarner was hitting 94 yesterday and they sent him out for the 8th inning. Either they have a plan to shut him down in one more start or they’re going to just fuck the innings-count and ride him till the end of the year. But the time to limit him to 6 innings was yesterday, in my opinion. I’m not second guessing Bochy I’m just saying, they have a plan that we aren’t privy too. And I am a big believer in shutting down/limiting innings of young arms— San Diego has to be killing themselves over what to do with Latos/Richard/etc. They’re fucked no matter what they do with them…..

  12. alleykat's avatar alleykat said, on September 7, 2010 at 4:56 pm

They will cut back Latos starting tonight. As he will get hammered by LA especially coming off stomach flu/food poisioning?.He’ll be lucky to last 5 innings.

  13. James's avatar James said, on September 7, 2010 at 5:03 pm

No one here is a fan of Zito, but I think Micheal’s hunch is right –Zits wlll toss another decent game or two. The flip side is that Lincecum still has a 91 MPH fastball, and I doubt that he’s going to be light’s out every start for the rest of the season. He was as lucky in the first inning his last start as he was unfortunate in a couple of the recent losses.

  14. Flavor's avatar bigflavor said, on September 7, 2010 at 5:06 pm

I think Zito is totally and completely done for the year, no more good starts. He’s lost his *fastball*. He cannot get hitters out consistently enough in a full game with that 85 mph slop. He had his fastball at the very beginning of the year for about 6 weeks, then it went bye bye. Maybe next year…….

  15. TedSpe's avatar TedSpe said, on September 7, 2010 at 5:08 pm

Just looked over at the Splash. Funny. Someone posted about how the Giants are playing .500 ball this season. How can you have a .558 winning percentage, 5th best in the NL, and be playing .500 ball? That’s, like, Alice in Wonderland logic

  16. James's avatar James said, on September 7, 2010 at 5:22 pm

On 6/23 Zito’s ERA was 3.45 and on 8/17 it was 3.56. That covers 11 starts. He’s been throwing 86 for awhile.

  17. alleykat's avatar alleykat said, on September 7, 2010 at 5:47 pm

Zito now pitches like Eddie Harris in Major League:

Rick Vaughan-(Seeing Harris take off his shirt revealing white stuff on his chest) What’s that shit on your chest?
Eddie Harris -(Looking at his chest) Crisco
Eddie Harris(wiping it across his head)
    Eddie Harris- Bardol
Eddie Harris- Wiping it along his waist line
Eddie Harris-Vagisil.Anyone of them will get you another two to 3 inches drop on your curveball.Of course if the umps are watching me real close,I’ll rub a little jalapeo up my nose, get it runnin’,and if i need to load the ball up I just…
    Eddie Harris-Wipes his nose
    Eddie Harris-Wipe my nose
Rick Vaughan-You put snot on the ball?
Eddie Harris-I haven’t got an arm like you kid.I have to put anything on it I can find.Someday you will too.

I was reading about how Wilson may break the Giants saves record of 48 by Beck this year. yOU KNOW, if he can keep up this quality, get enough save opportunites and the Giants reach PS, he’s seriously treading into Cy Young land

    • DJLoo's avatar DJLoo said, on September 7, 2010 at 5:59 pm

Y’know Ted, the year Shooter saved 48 (1993) I thought he should’ve won the CY. He wound up getting ZERO Cy votes, yet finished 12th in MVP voting. How the fuck do you explain that?

  20. Flavor's avatar bigflavor said, on September 7, 2010 at 5:56 pm

Ted. Could be. The cy young guys right now srd ubaldo by default and maybe tim Hudson (don’t know how many wins he’s got, I’m in the car). If Wilson hit 48 saves I don’t think he gets it. Bug 5o? Maybe. But go look at eck’s cy young year, his numbers were comical. Wilson doesn’t have that

    • TedSpe's avatar TedSpe said, on September 7, 2010 at 6:04 pm

The ERAs pretty close to Eckersley’s. But, yeah, I don’t think 48 will do it either. I’m just saying his personal season is starting to wander in that territory. But Loo pointed out, Beck got ZERO votes. Incredible. If Wilson keeps the ERA down and creeps towards 50 saves, he’s gotta get *some* votes at least

I’m delighted to have Fruckie do something. I’ve wished poor results for only two players ever here: Zito and Whitseide. And if my wish had been answered the team would be better off. In Whitey’s case, his earlty hittng success this year fooled them, a deal should have been made for a better back up. With Zito, well, it’s obvious. The best thing would have been something like 0-32 the first year.
