A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

One Win Away from The Money

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on September 16, 2010

82 wins on the season. The next win hits the over on *the Vegas insider* spread— they set it at 82.5 at the start of the season. I have that plus a much larger wager with my A’s buddy that hits once the Giants win their 89th game of the year…..

After 15 straight innings of ineptitude, the Giants finally scored a run. Fontenot wouldn’t be everyone’s POTG but he’s mine with room to spare. Plus I read somewhere once that wide chicks need props, too. πŸ™‚ Anyway, Β he hit the ball hard all night with nothing to show for it. Finally, where so many others had failed he delivered against Β a tough pitch to hit, muscling it into right field. Obviously, most of the team was critical to this win including Cain, the bullpen and Sandoval for making contact on a night that he looked like he wasn’t going to come within a foot of hitting the ball. He deserves credit for doing what he had to do in that situation. I still have no idea WTF he was doing in that first at bat with the bases loaded……….

This is going to be a very tough game to win tonight. I’m no Lilly fan but he’s a lefty who doesn’t walk too many guys– that’s the death combo to toss at our offense. Pray that Dirrrrty finds his stuff and just hope for another scratched out victory. 2-1 or so………

Wilson is having one hell of a year. I remember reading one of those Bleacher Report articles before the season and the writer was bitching about BW’s supposed inconsistency and that he didn’t have confidence in him. Screw that. He’s lights out dominant right now.

What is the Giants record, 44 saves by Shooter?

Thanks Ted. BW has a shot at the record, though I’d rather see him not get it because the Giants start winning games more handily.

Some guy on the Bleacher report posted this

The Andre Ethier home run was just the second earned run allowed by Brian Wilson in 20.0 innings since August 1.

Brian Wilson recorded his 43rd save…this number ranks 1st in the National League, and is tied for 1st in the majors with Rafael Soriano….Wilson now stands just five saves away from Rod Beck’s SF record of 48 saves in a single season. He has nine 4+ out saves this year, an indication of his stamina as a closer

No Closer should ever win the Cy Young. IMO

Sanchez has been a revelation, imo. Two years ago the league hit .257 off him, now it’s down to .208. He has improved his WHIP every year, K’s more and BBs less, and throwing more innings . Last 3 starts: 20 IP 1 ER, only 9 hits given up. His ERA since AS break is half a run better than before. I don’t think there is any question about him “finding it.”

See who Torre trots out there on getaway day, but the LH guys are the more dangerous ones to me, esp after watching Ethier yank one off Wilson last night the other way. Loney just has a beautiful swing, tough RBI guy. Keep the RHs in the yard and Sanchez should be OK.

Winning with the LU he had last night, Bochy can get the other RH guys in tonite, like Rent, FS, Burrell and probably Guillen too. Great times for the unlikely heroes, to come through in crucial games. Who steps up tonite?

  8. JBat's avatar JBat said, on September 16, 2010 at 9:18 am

If Cainer is a horse, so is Wilson for all those 4 & 5 out saves.

  9. 3bagger's avatar 3bagger said, on September 16, 2010 at 9:41 am

MY POTG was Bochy. I was beside myslef when he sent Ishi to bat for Cain in the 7th with no one on and one out. With the way the Giants were hitting Babs, I didn’t think they would score that inning and Cain would have been out after dominating the bums with only 90 pitches thrown. Man, was I wrong. A ballsy decision that proved to be the right one. Props to Cain, Ishsi, and little Mike, but for me, Boch won that game.

I’m still waiting for Cody Ross to show a reason he should be in the mix…..last 4 starts 1 for 14, one BB 4 Ks. Sf numbers are just abysmal: 35 ABs 6 hits, 1 double, 4 BBs 13 Ks. I dunno. Those numbers could get you Garkoed.

I liked last night’s LU, but for all the speed, the OF went 0 for 11…if these guys can’t get on first, then Bochy has no way to play small ball. I wish SF had younger and more athletic players, but….other than Torres there isn’t much speed to go around, and I don’t think it is all fair to criticize Bochy for not playing the game that way. He doesn’t have that type of team, esp after adding in Posey, Burrell, Guillen, and a nearly full season from FS. The way he does it has worked to the tune of 18 games over .500.

I’m sure tonite’s starting LU, even without Panda, is going to be full water buffalo mode. Huff really might be “the best athlete” out there.

Generally, I would agree with you. But if there were no “exceptional” starters and there *was* and “exceptional” closer, like the year Eckersley won it, I wouldn’t gripe too vehemently. Although, I still don’t think Eckersley should have gotten the MVP. I don’t think a pitcher should ever win the MVP unless they make centerfielders eligible for the CY.

Panda needs to sit a few days. He’s hitting something like .198 now with RISP. He finally got that grounder last night to knock in the run, cool. But, his previous two ABs with RISP were abysmal. That first inning AB with bags loaded may have been his worst AB of the year, and that’s saying something. With bags loaded, how can you swing at a first pitch POS 6 inches outside in the dirt? That’s just a fuckin dumbass approach, especially given the magnitude of these games where every run counts. Agree with BF, likely another cardiac game tonite with Lilly going. And Ross, after a first good game or two, is looking like siyonara during the offseason. His swing is too long, he’s a sucker for low sliders….

  13. TedSpe's avatar TedSpe said, on September 16, 2010 at 10:17 am

You can’t judge a hitter by RISP. It’s an interesting but useless stat because it relies on a situation the hitter didn’t create. You could have a .234 hitter with a .500 RISP. Go ahead and criticize Panda’s .263 BA but RISP is a weak arguement

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 16, 2010 at 12:16 pm

WTF does that mean? So with your logic, with two .263 overall BA hitters, one with .300 RISP and one with Panda RISP below .200 are virtually identical? Baloney…

  14. xootsuit's avatar xootsuit said, on September 16, 2010 at 10:23 am

Ross made a very good play in CF, at a crucial moment, last night. Torres would’ve made it, too. Rowand? Possible, not probable. Velez, Ford, Schierhose? Well, even a blind pig . . .

  15. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on September 16, 2010 at 10:25 am

Flav: I think these guys will handle Lilly. Depends on Bochy’s selections for the LU, of course. Who hits him? Guesses are Renteria and, of course, Posey. Maybe also one of the quiet guys.

For lefties, Lilly and Sanchez are opposites in one dimension: Walks. Drrrrty leads the league in BBs given up while Lilly is a total miser. Why does Jonathan have a lower ERA? His BAA is something like .208, second in the league to Mat Latos of the Dagos with something like a .197 ~ adjusted upwards to that level recently by SF. Matt the Horse is sixth in the league in that category as well as in WHIP. Except for August, Timmy has also been essentially unhittable.

Hoping we do not have to wait seven agonizing innings for the Giants to score first tonight. At least they are not facing Kershaw or Billingsley. The team has hit Lilly moderately well over the years, but the personnel has changed in many ways.

Pablo has about three offseason needs: Laser eye surgery; a strict diet and workout regimen and a sports hypnotist. Imagine the lead the team would have right now had Sandoval been Kung Fu Panda like he was last season and for part of a season in ’08.

    Giants win 4-1.

    • xootsuit's avatar xootsuit said, on September 16, 2010 at 10:39 am

A lot things can cause vision problems and Lasik(R) surgery only cures a few of them, I believe.

Without good vision, a ballplayer can’t be a hitter. When Babe Ruth went to the movies, he could see separately each individual image projected onto the screen. When Ted Williams was at the plate, he could see each individual stitch on the ball spinning toward him. When Barry Bonds opens his eyes these days, he can see the writing on the wall 400 feet away (“no CTown for you”). Either you got it or you don’t. (Well, unless they come up with a miraculous procedure. I guess it’s possible that in five years we’ll be hearing about various ballplayers scheduled to have “Pablo Sandoval surgery” in the off season . . . .)

      • Giant Head's avatar Giant Head said, on September 16, 2010 at 12:06 pm

I think with the three great players you mentioned, they had extraordinary vision and were extraordinary players. I doubt that many of all the great players in the history of baseball has such spectacular vision.

So it is not a question of having it or not to be a good if not great player. Panda does not need to be Bonds, Williams or Babe Ruth.

His problem besides the obvious eye issues, is that the entire league now has a book on him and they must all be sharing it. Throw him break balls down and in and he will swing, throw sliders away and he will swing. Throw fastballs chin high, he will swing. How often do they get ahead of him on the first pitch (looks like he is seeing a lot of fastballs on first pitch so pitchers can get ahead of him and he is always late catching up to them) and tyhen begin to throw the unhittable junk??? He needs to take pitch one unless it is dowwn the plate and then lay off the rest of the pitches till he gets back to a hitters count and start getting on base.

But I think it is going to take a lot of off-season work he should have put in last year for the full winter instead of going back to play in Venezuela…

It is time this off-season to adjust to the book the pitchers have on him and fix the eyesight or he will be finished. He again does not need to see every stitch spinning on a ball, but better vision and more patience should lead him to looking more like 2009 than 2010.

They are fading in their race when we need themm to stay in contention. It is certianly make or break this weekend for them, but I am not confident they will take three of four from the Padres.

Not only do the Cards have these four against the Padres, they finish with 4 against the Rockies. If the Cards are out of the race that week, Rockies will go in there looking for blood….we need to use this Brewers series to get into first and stay there…

GH, buddy of mine has Wainwright on his fantasy team, and the guy has been killing him with like 4 losses in the last month. Carpenter was ahead 2-1 last night going into 7th, gave up 4 runs at home and loses to Cubs. The kid Garcia got pounded last time out and Lohse is the shits. I don’t think we can expect much help from STL….not to mention, Rox get LA (who have scored something like 21 runs in last 10 games) next, tho they are on the road.

One last thought on burriss and Ford…I think bochy is trying to make this as positive an experience for them as possible, surrounded by vets in a pennant race, and cut down on chances they make a Jose Cruz Jr. type mistake that costs SF dearly. I think he felt badly for Ford when he got called out on the SB attempt late in the game last week. Unless it’s “garbage time” I don’t think they get in there much.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 16, 2010 at 1:15 pm

Because he swings at crap pitches. So, even when the pitcher is under stress with RISP, they don’t come close to giving in to him, they can still throw crap from pitch 1 to get him out. The only risk they have is not a walk, but a wild pitch…

I’m going to help you again: RISP is a random, near meaningless stat. Over a career nearly all hitters end up with their RISP almost right where their regular BA is. You know, it’s a sad thing. Truly.
I’m reading the Sporting Green today and there’s a section after the game summary called Giants Beat. Today it was about how the pitchers have all started exercising their arms more between starts, especially the long toss. Bumgarner is quoted about it, Lincecum’s opinions are cited and then a new paragraph starts:

Barry Zito has been a big advocate of long toss. He throws from….

And while I’m reading these words, my brain is simultaniously thinking “Oh Jesus, who gives a fuck?”

    Like I said. Sad, really.

  30. Michael's avatar Michael said, on September 16, 2010 at 2:47 pm

Johnny Sain was the greatest pitching coach who ever lived. He believed in pitchers throwing, not running. He never held a job because of his position on pitchers running, the managers hated it. Anyway, he was a long toss advocate, any kind of throwing, really. The pitch count issue today wouldn’t exist if we didn’t have midget, LL, and HS coaches teaching the kids breaking balls too early. That’s the issue more than mere pitch counts. Strasburg was 100% Tommy John bound, surprised it wasn’t even earlier… a kid who can throw 95+ needs three pitches: 4 seam. 2 Seam. Change. Period. He can add the breaker when his heater slows down and he grows up…

Note to the morons who dismiss the loss of Torres because he had a poor August: it’s a huge loss. They’re fighting LA for 4th without him. Huff had a crap August, you want him down, too?

  45. Craig's avatar Craig said, on September 16, 2010 at 5:37 pm

Hey I posted that it was a devastating loss the day it happened

  46. Michael's avatar Michael said, on September 16, 2010 at 5:40 pm

    So why the defensive post?

  47. TedSpe's avatar TedSpe said, on September 16, 2010 at 5:41 pm

I think most folks thought it was a devastating loss. But I did hear and read other folks saying “Well, he was in a slump anyway”. Probably the same people who’s panties are in a bunch with today’s lieneup. Whistling a Henry Mancini famous mascot tune

  48. Craig's avatar Craig said, on September 16, 2010 at 5:45 pm

Because, actually, as I think about it I can’t think of even one post here that gave torres shit about his poor month. In fact, everyone thought it was a huge loss. U must be talking about your splash friends

    • Michael's avatar Michael said, on September 16, 2010 at 5:50 pm

      Actually, YOU said it.

  49. Michael's avatar Michael said, on September 16, 2010 at 5:50 pm

If Rowand, Ross, Velez, now Rent leading off isn’t proof enough…
After his first AB, Eugenio did work the count, though. Renteria is usually good for that. Fact is, Torres is the only lead off hitter they have, and one of the most valuable players in the game..

  50. Craig's avatar Craig said, on September 16, 2010 at 5:59 pm

My hopeful post about a rowand revival in the midst of the torres injury was nothing more than praying for an ironic miracle. And he could step up, we’ll see. But it IS truly tough to look at how slow this LU is top to bottom.z

  51. Michael's avatar Michael said, on September 16, 2010 at 6:05 pm

The line up, aside from Torres, has been slow all fucking year. It’s not much different. Lilly is susceptible to the long ball and he has 4 guys in the LU who have taken him deep, Rent and Uribe twice each… Smart…

  52. Craig's avatar Craig said, on September 16, 2010 at 6:09 pm

Torres at least gives you a different look. losing him is like losing 12.5 % of our speed and it really probably is more than that since we have no speed other than him. I’m fine with rent leading off, I just dint really think it matters where the guys in this LU hit

  53. IH1978's avatar IH1978 said, on September 16, 2010 at 6:17 pm

It’s just demoralizing to see Rowand step in there to start the game knowing it’ll be a strike out or weak grounder. It’ll never happen but leading off Ford would energize everyone, and he could beat out a weak grounder

    • TedSpe's avatar TedSpe said, on September 16, 2010 at 6:25 pm

leading off Ford would energize everyone
      ————————————-
Well, we have no idea that’s true. What if he keeps striking out looking or swinging at balls in the dirt or whatever? Ford leading off is no gurantee he’ll ever even *touch* a base. That doesn’t do anything for “energizing” folks and at least Rowand’s got a history with Lilly

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 16, 2010 at 7:16 pm

The game’s on NBC 3 outta San Jose…

  54. IH1978's avatar IH1978 said, on September 16, 2010 at 6:30 pm

We certainly know that Rowand energizes no one.

  55. Michael's avatar Michael said, on September 16, 2010 at 6:38 pm

Rowand is not leading off. Find something relevant to bitch about.

  56. dirtnrocksnomo's avatar dirtnrocksnreno said, on September 16, 2010 at 6:39 pm

Rowand gets look after look but Ross gets a couple of rays of daylight and straight to the bench. I’m not saying he should lead off but give the dude a few more ABs. Ah, well. Whatever.

Dirty is going to give it to the dodgers tonight. Right in the brown eye.

    Go Giants!

  57. wswinb4igo's avatar wswinb4igo said, on September 16, 2010 at 6:41 pm

Michael…Fontenot and even Burrell are better bets to return than Ross.

    • Michael's avatar Michael said, on September 16, 2010 at 6:49 pm

You should be sick of being wrong. I did forget about Fontenot. They”ll try to get Huff, Fontenot, and Ross back. They’ll low ball Pat, not offer Guillen.

  59. Giant Head's avatar Giant Head said, on September 16, 2010 at 6:49 pm

I think Fotenot and Burrell will be back as well but only as occasional starters.

But Ross has been a proven decent commodity in the NL. He is arb eligible but he won’t cost us as much with the year he had…guaranteed he will be back and likely starting.

I wouldn’t mind seeing Cody Rasmus in a Giants uniform.

  60. Michael's avatar Michael said, on September 16, 2010 at 6:51 pm

They’ll try to off Fruckie, Fontenot is better and they can platoon him with Burriss..

  61. Giant Head's avatar Giant Head said, on September 16, 2010 at 6:54 pm

Also with Ross and his friendship with Uggla, I think there may be a chance to work a deal for him.

Freddy Sanchez would look great in a Marlin uniform…

  62. DJLoo's avatar DJLoo said, on September 16, 2010 at 6:56 pm

I seem to remember the Giants being energized when they inserted an inexperienced, speedy OF named Rajai Davis into the lineup back in 2007. They were so energized that they went 3-12 in his first 15 games….

We hit three “tatters” tonight. Who you say will do that Dennis? Well, if I must reveal names. I’ll go with Huff, Burrell and Guillen.

    BEAT LA!

  71. Giant Head's avatar Giant Head said, on September 16, 2010 at 7:17 pm

I keep trying to forget about DeRosa..

But Loo, I premised Uggla in getting rid of Franchez…who has looked better than Uggla hitting at ATT the last two years?

Fuck Hanley Ramirez…I don’t want to sign any player for more than two years ever again. Ramirez’ head and ego will rival Bonds and with less talent…fuck him. The shit he pulled in Florida and his recent performance at ATT where he only cares boeut himself is the last player I want on my team.

What has signing Holliday, Bay, etc. done for these teams?

  72. Del Mar Dennis's avatar delmardennis said, on September 16, 2010 at 7:18 pm

Can we take a Mulligan? Son of a bitch. We’re really gonna need those three “tatters” that I promised.

Not the Start Sanchez needed. With no help by Uribe.

  74. Giant Head's avatar Giant Head said, on September 16, 2010 at 7:20 pm

Uggla can also play first..DeRosa can play second and left as needed and Huff, Torres, Ross start in the OF.

I would still like Rasmus and let him beat Ross as a starter…Burrell and Fontenot will be each less than $2 mill signings…
