A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

3 Games That Will Determine the Outcome of the Season

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on September 24, 2010

Is it possible to get more geeked for this series? Timmy vs “The Poor Man’s Ubaldo” tonight. I love watching Chacin pitch, this is going to be a great match up. Zitman on Sat and for some unknown reason the Rockies hitters flail against him. Then Cain on Sunday.

The pitching staff continues to hurl at a record pace in September but there’s reason for concern right now. The rockies are losing but they aren’t having any trouble hitting the ball. I’m certain that our “HR or bust” mentality will continue in Colorado. We can’t panic if they put up runs just go out and match any crooked numbers they might put up.

I’ve got no feel on how this series plays out. The only thing that would be devastating would be getting swept but I just can’t see that with Timmy and Cain going. We are in control of everything, especially with 6 easy ones to end the season. At home. Magic number is 10……

OK, when I said yesterday let’s take Balde down in fantasy, I did not mean for Flav then to take first jumping 4.5 points!

    13 rbis..you bastard!

Good to see the breakout last night. Now if only they could string about five games together just like it, we’d be looking good. The Padres have been struggling, but I don’t see how the three game set with them next weekend qualifies as an “easy one.” They may well be fighting for a division title or wild card spot. I’m sure they’ll be quite game.

Looks like that Fontentot lead off thing worked out real well…I think we should stick with it for the game tonight. De La Rosa tomorrow right? Why not give Burriss one game and then if we win the first two, may be time to see if Torres can be up physically to start.

We win the first two then we would be 5.5 up on Rockies and Sunday would not be as crucial and we may need to see if Torres can play or not…

…I see your point, but if SD matches us win for win, that 3rd game will be important.

Dennis is right…no arguing over the post season rosters yet. Funny thing about yesterday is, where was the wind when Bum was on the mound? Cubs all walked up there with bats in their hands too, and he fucked them up for 7 strong, lowering his ERA to 3.06.

SF pitching is just lights out these days, top to bottom, and that’s their edge over everyone. Even when the bats go silent, pitcihing has been stellar.

Ask the Rox how “easy” it is to play the DBax, who just swept their ass. Sure their pitching is suspect, but it was pretty good last time they came here, and that was after the high of our road trip kicking SD and LA butt.

  6. max808's avatar max808 said, on September 24, 2010 at 8:11 am

Taking nothing for granted. We go 4-2 and SD goes 5-2, it’s all tied up heading into the final series.

Noticed the Pads bumped Latos up last night presumably so he can start 2 more games, including the final one of the season. The way he’s pitched lately, I think I’d rather see him than Stauffer or Richard.

  7. Giant Head's avatar Giant Head said, on September 24, 2010 at 8:20 am

Would be nice for the Reds to take two in SD and for us to take two in CO. So even if the Pads win Monday, we would then have a one game lead with a magic number of 6 right?

Give AZ a lot of props, they have played real well in the last month. At least we got one win from the Dodgers against the Rockies and Padres…

  8. Giant Head's avatar Giant Head said, on September 24, 2010 at 8:23 am

any word on Huff? He was hobbling badly…he probably should be forced to sit regardless if he wants to play. Hititng in the three hole with one leg is not going to work…

    • zumarust's avatar zumarust said, on September 24, 2010 at 8:51 am

I caught part of the game on the radio, and Miller said Huff had taken a foul ball off the calf in the previous game. Sounds like not too serious of an injury.

  9. 3bagger's avatar 3bagger said, on September 24, 2010 at 8:54 am

GH, if the Giants win the 1st 2 in Col there’s even less reason to start Torres on Sunday. He might get in off the bench if they really need to see if he can play, but they won’t risk losing him next week and for the postseason if his incision ruptures. And there’s no way Burris starts in Colorado. This set is more important than the last. If he was to get a start, it would have been against the Cubs or even the Brewers last weekend. And unless Huff can’t walk, he plays. He fouled the ball off his leg on Wed and he still started yesterday. He’ll start tonight unless the contusion got worse, which is unlikely.

As I suggested a few days ago, Fontenot has opened the door to take over 3rd for the rest of the year. This is the best thing for the team right now, Panda can get his head together in the off season and see if he can make 2011 work. 2010 did not……

Pretty funny listening to Krukow this morning. He said everyone was watching the Friars/Bums and Rocks/Snakes games on their flight into Denver. Krukow remarked that Kuiper even provided a little “in flight broadcasting” for the telecasts. When the Snakes pen tried their damnedest to blow that 4-run 9th inning lead, Krukow expressed how Kuiper’s description became very “colorful” and unfettered without the shackles of the FCC restrictions. I could just imagine…

“Jesus H. Christ! I swear to God you assholes better not blow this shit. We’re flying in to play these bastards next, don’t you dare give them any unnecessary momentum. Heilman! What’s your major malfunction numbnuts! Throw some goddamn strikes! Get his POS outta there. Gibson, you sorry excuse for a manager, WTF are you waiting for, yank his ass now!

OK, good, he’s gone. Bring in Gutierrez and let’s end this shit. I’m getting hungry anyway. Kruk, did you remember to make reservations at the Rockies Steakhouse? And you’re picking up the check this time you cheap bastard. No more of the “reach” bullshit. Pick the motherfucker up! OK, here go…you’ve got to be kiddin’ me, this asshole can’t throw any strikes either. WTF is wrong with you people! It’s called a “strike,” that’s S-T-R-I-K-E for you illiterate stoopid fuckwads…throw strikes! I can’t take this shit any longer. Next pitch that isn’t a strike, and I’m gonna come down there and shove this Scott McClain bat straight up you goddamn ass! I’m down with Fontenot instead of Panda until further notice. Fontenot won’t remind of Matt Williams, but at least takes a decent big league AB and has a shot at getting a knock or two. Panda’s ABs are a waste of a LU spot, and you can’t even argue anymore “at least his defense hasn’t suffered”, because it clearly has. I sit Torres until Sunday, regardless of outcomes the first two. Don’t want to bring him back until he’s ready, he’ll be needed for the last week….

If this thing comes down to the last game on Sunday vs. Pads, who do you guys want pitching that one, if there were a choice? It looks now like Sanchez goes if the schedule went as usual. If that ballgame means playoffs vs. no playoffs, I’m not sure I want Sanchez. Gimme Cain or Timmy and juggle the rotation a day to make it happen. I’d probably want Timmy because Cain, though throwing great lately, is prone to give up an HR or two, and the way this hitting is going, if you get down 3 or 4 runs to the Pads, that could be all she wrote…

    • Unca Chuck's avatar Unca Chuck said, on September 24, 2010 at 10:00 am

Sanchez, and at the 1st sign of trouble, Bummie.

  16. 3bagger's avatar 3bagger said, on September 24, 2010 at 9:53 am

Timmy, is scheduled to pitch the last game of the AZ series and then wouldn’t be ready to pitch against SD. Cain is scheduled to pitch the second game of that series. If they do any lineup juggling to get Lincecum in against SD, I think Bochy would possibly flip-flop Timmy & Zito. With the offday Monday, Zito would get plenty of rest and Timmy would get even more. Then you’d have Tim and Cain in the first two games of that series and they should still have enough time to recover for PS.

  18. max808's avatar max808 said, on September 24, 2010 at 10:00 am

Leave well enough alone with the rotation. Zito is pitching great, everyone is rested and on 5 days and should the playoffs happen, Tim will be ready to open on his normal days of rest. And, Sanchez has done well against the Padres.

  19. 3bagger's avatar 3bagger said, on September 24, 2010 at 10:15 am

I doubt the lineup will be shuffled. The only chance is if they get to that last game against AZ trailing SD by 2, but I still think it’s improbable Bochy changes anything. This historic pitching streak has been touted by many as being the result of the rotation not being altered since opening day, even when Wellershit couldn’t get his shit together.

  20. max808's avatar max808 said, on September 24, 2010 at 10:16 am

Cain will pitch that Saturday, so he cant go Sunday…

I would not mind and may prefer giving Zito or the Bum a skip in the AZ series and move everyone up so that Cain pitches Friday against SD and if needed Lincecum pitches the last day Sunday.

If we clinch before that Sunday, then Bum or Zito can finish the season and Lincecum or Cain are ready for Game 1….hopefully against the Braves or Reds at home!

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 24, 2010 at 1:49 pm

I like Kuip, but the eating and drinking thing during that wrap frosts me. None of the others do it. During a conversation, I don’t need to hear licking of chops and gurgles while drinking a Diet Coke during a conversation. Seems disrespectful to the listeners…

I think Max does make a valid argument that there is no let down if we go Sanchez in the last game of the season if it is must-win….my thinking really had been on whether you need to keep pushing Bum’s arm and pitch count, but last night was probably enough of an answer.

Can we now score 11 a game this whole weekend? I cant wait for this game to start with the Rockies on a four game losing streak and Lincecum finding his groove…

  26. stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on September 24, 2010 at 11:01 am

Fontenot leading off with Franchez in the two-hole. Could be good, a small-ball starter strategy against Chacin. Critical for the Giants to score first. If they do, they almost always win. History of the season. If its the pair of runts, followed by Huff and Posey there’s a decent possibility of those four working Jhoulys (if that’s how you spell it) for 20 pitches or more in the first. If they can also get at least one run outta the deal the team should have a great chance of winning.

Timmy will be on his guard against CarGo and Tulo. They have cooled off considerably on the road, but in the Box of Rox there always is that Humidor factor. MLB needs to have full control over that room and the transfer of balls to the umps. Probably should be a rule for all parks. Attendants, MLB, not club employees, should be rotated every month or so as to not get too chummy with the locals. MLB can afford it, but baseball cannot afford even the suspicion of sanctioned homefield advantage cheating.

In game two Hammel is so-so at best. A recently improved Zito matches up well with him. Matt the Horse vs. Jorge de la Rosa. Again, a bit of early scoring by the Giants and Cain can relax into his game. So only Chacin is likely to keep the SF bats frozen. That pair of runts at the top of the order may be the solution to any ideas he may have of matching up with Timmy.

Rox are desperate after getting crunched into gravel by three games in the desert. After some successful Dempster diving last night, the Giants hitters should be keyed in. Small ball start in the first inning tonight could be a winning strategy. Giants take two in Denver and its all over for the Rox. There should be some confidence with Timmy on the hill and a 13-Zip skinning of the Cubs under their belts.

  27. Giant Head's avatar Giant Head said, on September 24, 2010 at 11:06 am

I had said since Monday Fontenot should have had all the starts in Chicago. I only suggested giving Burriss a start Saturday agaisnt the lefty De La Rosa to keep up with the small ball get on base start of games rather than the lefty Fontenot.

Ross is doing what he can but he is just not a good leadoff guy…

  28. Michael's avatar Michael said, on September 24, 2010 at 11:14 am

Fontenot having a good start pretty much insures he’ll be in for Panda TONIGHT,but only because of the good game. It’s very much day to day… my guess is that Panda goes against Hammell and the RHers at home. Considering his H/Away splits hard to see him sitting for all 6.
BTW: Current Giants are 5 for 44 against Chacin. Huff with 2 of the hits, both HRs…

  29. Michael's avatar Michael said, on September 24, 2010 at 11:25 am

One note, these 3 are important but not as much as they once appeared they might be. Right now it could very well be the AZ series, not this one or the SD one that turns out to be key.

Willied on the button at 8:11. The wind WAS blowing put for the Cubs, too. Bum’s performance was overshadowed by the barrage, but it might’ve been off the charts brilliant. Leaving him off the PS roster would be a big mistake. Even if it’s just for insurance against an injury or a Zito implosion. And how about the much maligned Freddy pushing .300?

In a perfect world I would love to see Bum on the PS roster.. If you recall, I said I’d as soon have him pitching a big game as Matt or Tim… BUT: they’d be more than ignoring the 20% wisdom, they’d be spitting at it. If they’re even dreaming of that, at least skip his next start and also hope the final against SD is meaningless. He’s at about 182 now, 20% over last year is about 170. Skip his next one and then hope they don’t need him for the finale.

  33. max808's avatar max808 said, on September 24, 2010 at 12:19 pm

Another factor in all of this is finishing ahead of Cincy to get home field in the first round and avoid facing Philly.

  34. Giant Head's avatar Giant Head said, on September 24, 2010 at 12:20 pm

I am reading this right: a player can only be eligible for the playoff roster (avert your eyes dennis) if they are on the 25-man roster as of August 31 or on the disabled list at that time?

So no Velez, Ford, Runzler, etc. Motya would be eligible but not needed.

I wondered if they could go in a short 5 game series with just a 10 man pitching staff and 7 hitters on the bench. But that does not look possible with this restriction:

Eligible for the Bench: Whiteside, Ishikawa, Fontenot, Renteria, Schierholtz and Rowand. So we probably go 4 starters and 7 relievers with Bum in the pen?

Pen: Wilson, Romo, Lopez, Casillia, Affeldt, Ramirez or Mota and Bum.

No Chris Ray and either Ramirez or Mota get sat.

  36. Michael's avatar Michael said, on September 24, 2010 at 12:24 pm

That gets complicated, though, with the Reds playing the Pads this weekend. Having the Padre series rendered meaningless would be the ideal scenario.

  37. Giant Head's avatar Giant Head said, on September 24, 2010 at 12:28 pm

I actually think we should sit Bum as well against AZ and hope that last game is meaningless and if not, Lincecum starts over Bumgarner that Sunday game.

If we clinch, Bum does not need to start then or just pitch him 2-3 innings?

Couldn’t we even bring up someone else on the 40-man to pitch the last game to save Bum? I am also in the camp that we should not push his arm much further…

  38. Giant Head's avatar Giant Head said, on September 24, 2010 at 12:35 pm

Hey I forgot about Cody Ross, so we could go with 7-man bench (no way they leave Panda off the playoff roster, would be too much of a mental punishment for a guy like him to take) and 10 pitchers.

Bum would unfortunately be the first to not make the roster unless they have no confidence in Zito and that is not Bochy’s MO to screw a vet like that nor Rowand.

Ramirez would be my first choice over Mota, but either would suit a more specific need than Bum in a 5-game series.

They can add a reliever in the longer 7-game series…

  39. Giant Head's avatar Giant Head said, on September 24, 2010 at 12:37 pm

Jesus H. Christ. I liked last night’s lineup a whole lot better than this one.
First one to get the ball outta the infield wins a Kewpie Doll. I’m gonna go out on a limb and say we don’t score 13 again tonight. Shit, we’ll be lucky to have Fred Dean sack Danny White in the end zone for a safety and put 2 up on the board.

Of course he’s no joke. This is an even match up and key game of the series.

A neglected number and maybe the biggest diff from last year: with 80 HR, Giants have second highest road HR total in the league. They can slug with the big boys in the band boxes..

Chacin got through the inning. But the bottom and top of the lineup with those two walks did drive up his pitch count. Timmy needs to stay tough. Doubtful whether the middle or the order can get Jhoulys past 70 in the fourth cause of their hacking tendencies. My guess is that the game may open a bit in the fifth or sixth. Looks like yet another pitchers duel.

Timmy is just toying with the Rockies right now . 37 easy pitches through 3 with 4 K’s.Expect the Giants to open it up this inning.Chacin is faltering fast.

The outs were outs, but were slightly productive, particularly Burrell’s as he worked the count full out and drove Chacin’s pitch count up to 72 for 4 innings work. That is medium-high. Timmy faces the top of the LU in this inning and if he sticks to his game-plan and mixes it up well he should do okay.

Laz Diaz is fucking horrible. Just flat out horrible calling balls and strikes. He could use the old fake cross up job and drill him in the chest for good measure. He sucks. Plunk his ass!

Tweet from Baggs: Lincecum just joined Marichal as only SF Giants pitcher with 3 consec. seasons of 200 IP/200 Ks. Last P before Marichal? Christy Mathewson.

Pretty damn impressive feat right there. Must be the hair.
