A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Thank you, Tampa Bay…….

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on September 25, 2010

Isn’t it amazing what one swing can do? If Pat swings through that pitch instead of blasting it into the bleachers, we would be sitting around bemoaning our crap offense trying to figure out how a first place team could get shut out seemingly every single game. And yet….One swing. Glory. Destiny…………

I never get tired of enjoying Tampa Bay paying for all of this…..

Ah, how cruel irony is. Zitman on the bump today. We win today and we basically knock Colorado out of the picture since they would be 5.5 back with 8 to play. How do you fight the inevitability of Zito’s Law? You get to bat against Jason Hammel.  The Rockies are stuck today, having to throw “dead arm” Hammel out there. If we win today that gives us 4 wins on the trip and I don’t see how we don’t steamroll this division with Cain going tomorrow and 6 to finish the season at home…..

“fucking juiced ball bullshit”– read his lips near the end of the clip..

Lincecum rubbing the ball down, noticing a it doesn’t feel right. “f– juiced ball b—t”. This needs to get play, and major sports news outlets need to pick it up and talk it up:

This is either some awesome pitching gamesmanship, or it is the beginning of the end for those unbelievable September numbers for the Rockies at Coors.

No more post season roster or shuffling the rotation BS! Or if we do this and somebody else does that….SF is in control, so finish strong and talk about that shit later. Last couple times we have actually taken over first, we haven’t stayed there long. So nice to see Lincecum not allow Rox anything (Cargo and Tulo 0-6 with one ball out of the IF all night), and the Earl Weaver strategy paying off again.

An old Mexican dicho says, “When you are in the saddle, ride well.” Maneja bien, Gigantes!

Lincecum straight up slapped around a potent line-up last night. With Colorado’s hitters discombobulated and demoralized I can see Zito getting the W today.

I think that the Giants should take a page from the 86 Mets book. In the Houston playoff series, there was a question out there of Mike Scott, who had been lights out that season, doctoring the ball.

So against Scott in that series, every good pitch that Scott threw, the Mets would have the ump check the ball. I dunno if Scott was cheating, but the Mets got into the Astro’s heads. It was a hard fought series, and I think that a little psych edge made a difference.

Giants pitchers should ostentatiously feel up every ball, and throw back every one that feels funny, and even some that don’t, and put some anger behind it, like Lincecum did. Get the psych advantage, every bit helps at this point.

A fanhouse article is getting some play at the over this issue. The internet works on click throughs, the more attention articles get, the more the major media outlets will want to get a piece of the action.

    http://mlb.fanhouse.com/2010/09/25/did-tim-lincecum-get-a-juiced-ball-at-coors-field/

The splits are certainly suspicious: “Their (Rockies) OPS at home is .872 and on the road it’s .663. Rockies opponents have a .729 OPS in Colorado and .716 in other parks.”

That difference could be attributable to Rockies team being “built” for the park, Rockies’ hitters and pitchers knowing the park and being more comfortable there. It could also be that the Rocks like the little edge that they get from being in control of the balls coming out of the humidor.

Whatever the case may be, every Giants pitcher should carefully inspect every ball thrown out to them.

  7. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on September 25, 2010 at 9:48 am

If Timmy feels a ball and thinks it’s a non-humidor juicer, I believe him. Bud the Car Salesman should get off his ass and put an independent party in charge of this humidor process. The umpires union is always looking for more work, they could have an extra one in charge of that, or rotate them in/out each homestand or series to assure independence. It could be done with a minimum of fuss and cost, and take away all doubt. IF the Rockies have been jimmyjackin around with this, and we won’t ever know unless somebody inside squeals, it would be a HUGE deal….

This issue has the potential to be very corrosive to the integrity of the game. After all, you have a team that has made some fairly improbable runs at just the right times. If Colorado has been doing this (and it still is a big IF, IMO), then at least one season has had the postseason seriously impacted by it. You can bet that the owners will want to do one thing, and one thing only: find a way to make sure that there is not even a whiff that the integrity of the game is perceived as compromised. That will mean trying to keep a lid on it for now and the forseeable future, and dealing with it in the offseason procedurally in such a way as to remove all doubt that no shenanigans are possible.

Which, from a Giants perspective, is a good outcome.

Leave it to ol Dusty to mess up a bullpen decision. Somehow he got famous for that back in the day. Last night the Dagos had the bases juiced against the Reds and Miguel Tejada was due to bat. Ol Dusty figured that his man warming up in the bullpen, a Cuban defector name of Chapman might throw a wild pitch or walk in a run, so he stayed with the reliever he had on the mound and lost that 3-2 lead, and ultimately the ballgame as Tejada singled in a pair.

After that, Baker pulled the reliever and brought in Aroldis Chapman, who, in the course of striking out Tony Gwynn Jr. with a new ML record 105 mph fastball amidst his pitch sequence.

Only good thing to come out of that victory by the Pesky Pads is that Cincinnati, as well as Atlanta earlier in the evening, now both trail the Giants by a game. If things stay as they are, Philadelphia will face San Diego as the presumptive WC, while the Giants would host the Reds. Reds beat the Dagos tonight and its a whole nother arrangement.

Formula is simple. Giants need to keep winning. Zito-Hammel matchup looks mildly favorable for the Giants. Cain-DeLaRosa pairing looks a bit better. Can we dream sweep in Denver? Why the hell not! Staff ERA is now at 3.28, bettering that of the Friars by three percentage points.

Last night’s formula of dinking up Chacin’s pitch count by guys like Franchez worked out very nicely when he walked patient Posey to open the 7th and then threw that fat slider to Pat the bat. Tonight’s formula is to knock the stuffing outta Hammel before Zito even realizes he has a huge lead.

There are a hundred ways they could manipulate the status of the balls between the time they go into the humidor to the time they go to the ump’s bag. Some could spend less time than others in the humidor, etc., etc. One other possibility is that they humidor doesn’t affect all baseballs equally, for whatever reasons, and the differences are sometimes obvious. No matter what, however, mlb needs to be in charge of the fucking thing.

Labine is a Brooklyn Dodger legend as is anybody on the ’55 team it would seem, but I never saw him play. My earliest baseball memories are from 1963. Anyway Vada Pinson had the best “rookie” season in ’59, but was barely ineligible due to his limited action in ’58.

There might be something to it, from Shea:

“The Rockies can no longer monitor the entire process of using humidor balls, the San Francisco Chronicle learned. In the ninth year of the humidor era, Major League Baseball took a big step today in overseeing the process.

Starting tonight, the umpires will have more say in keeping their eyes on balls transported from the humidor to the Rockies’ dugout to the umpires’ ball pouch to the pitcher’s hand.

The Giants filed a complaint late last night with MLB, and MLB acted.

“We did get a complaint from the Giants,” MLB spokesman Pat Courtney said. “There’s going to be a change to the protocal. From the point balls come out of the humidor to the umpires’ room and into the dugout, there will be visual inspected at all times.”
Regarding the Giants’ complaint, Courtney said, “They said there was a concern about the procedings, so we changed them.”

And if the Rockies enormous home field advantage goes away along with it, we will have our answer. It would be interesting to mark this date as a dividing line and two or three years from now, look at the home/away splits for the Rocks and their visitors, to see if there is a change centered on the change in procedures.

Dennis and fellow birther WSW ( Fathead is the 3rd) think that a blog poster commenting is the same as the manager. These may be the dumbest assholes on the Internet.

What were your exact words the other day? “Politics are a no-no here. Especially your politics, Denny.”

I’d advise Barney Frank to adhere to his own stipulations, and then to shut the fuck up.

Its my contest rule, Dennis. I’m not in the contest..
Men like Dennis never took liberty overseas. They knew that ten bucks would get them offed.. seriously. Of course, “men” like Dennis never served.

Years ago it was pretty well known that the Minneapolis Lakers played around with their home rims. They were 10 feet high at the front rim, but an inch or two lower at the back rim. This created a sort of artificial cup for the hook shots that George Mikan like to bank in. Some teams would also use tighter nets to slow down an opponents fast break after a basket or looser ones to aid their own. Do you understand?

  54. DJLoo's avatar DJLoo said, on September 25, 2010 at 4:39 pm

Thank you. I honestly did not know that. As long as you’re educating me, would someone please tell me what the Tea Party is? Is it an actual political party like Democrat, etc. Started hearing it a lot the last year or so. And why the fuck is everyone beginning sentences with the word “typically” all of a sudden?

So.. my guess on position players for the NLDS:
    Posey
    Huff
    Sanchez
    Uribe
    Sandoval
    Burrell
    Torres
    Guillen
    Whiteside
    Ishikawa
    Fontenot
    Renteria
    Schierholtz
    Rowand
(Velez, if they go 10 pitchers.) What do you think, Dennis?

    • DJLoo's avatar DJLoo said, on September 25, 2010 at 4:47 pm

I’m sure that’s correct, Twin. Kind of amazing that Eli was on the ML roster from start to finish this year (I think). No minors or DL that I can recall.

Here’s a scary thought. TYPICALLY your Game 3 pitcher starts Game 7. You get where I’m going with this?

We’ll discuss the pitching staff for the postseason ( at length) later this weekend.

Knock yourself out , my man. I just think it’s putting the cart before the horse is all.

Many years ago I was helping a buddy coach LL softball game, and last inning comfortably ahead ace pitcher on the hill, I started zipping up the gear in the dugout….which was ordered to come to an immediate halt until the last out was duly recorded.

There are occasionally times I agree with FP (and Debra Saunders even), who as often as his mouth moves is bound to be right once in a while. As the saying goes, even paranoids have enemies.

    • xootsuit's avatar xootsuit said, on September 25, 2010 at 6:43 pm

If this was a playoff game, Sanchez, the third starter, might be struggling early and, I think, we definitely would want Bumgarner ready in the BP warming up. I’m not sure where Zito woudl be. Fourth starter, I guess.

  73. Michael's avatar Michael said, on September 25, 2010 at 5:42 pm

No, Zito is responsible. And Buster was positioned incorrectly.

  74. willied's avatar willied said, on September 25, 2010 at 5:56 pm

I don’t think Zito is going too long tonite anyway; looks like he’s pitching scared again. Just like ATT, getting to a bloop on the RF line is a pretty tough play. Only Torres probably catches that one. But tulo should not have scored.
