A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Manager of the Franchise (Only SF Considered)

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on November 19, 2010

So who is our MOFO’Sf? I left a few random guys off the poll list. Can you imagine if we did this poll last July? SO get your vote on, and you can only pick one so make it count….

that’s  a pretty sweet list of a bunch of guys who make up the history of this glorious franchise. And yet, there can only be one MANAGER OF THE FRANCHISE!

Magnus, although I voted, I strongly suggest you reset the poll with Leo Durocher in it. What validity can it have without Leo the Lip Durocher? Durocher mentored Mays, nurtured him, and, ahem, was the manager for the last team to win the World Series. WAIT. CORRECTION.That’s Bruce Bochy.

    Add Durocher, FW.

  2. PawlieKokonuts's avatar PawlieKokonuts said, on November 19, 2010 at 6:48 am

OK. You’re bringing out the editor in me. Now I see that the poll itself says SF MOF. So you seem to be addressing the SF years only. But elsewhere, and in the post’s heading, you merely say, Manager of the Franchise, not limiting to SF. Of course, now as I sit here with morning snow melting in the sun, I realize true franchise candidates would have to list John McGraw too.

Sorry I’ve ruined your day before it started. Solution? either add McGraw and Durocher and delete a few others, or add SF to all mentions of “franchise” (but doesn’t “franchise ” typically refer to a team’s entire history?

    Go back to sleep.

In the 60’s, the guy I most remember was Herman Franks.

If it’s SF only, there is only one nomineee: the man who won it all. Has to be the Botcher. And yeah, what a comeback by the Head. Do this before Two Trips and he’s 113th…
    Bochy

Tough choice, but I went with the Humm Baby. I’ve said it before that I think Craig and Rosen were crucial players in franchise history. The team was a mess for the better part of 10-15 years before they came on board. We’ve had our lows since then, but never in my opinion, as low as some of the stuff we had to endure in the pre-Roger Craig era.
Personally, I view the New York Giants as a separate franchise—even though it is not.
I’ve heard others (such as Sparky Anderson) rave about what a great manager Alvin Dark was, but he was before my time. Plus, Cepeda hated playing for the guy and I’m not down with anyone who pisses off The Baby Bull. (Although I get the feeling Cha-Cha wasn’t the easiest guy to manage)
Dusty was great, but I never could over the fact that he was an ex-Dodger.
I got no problem seeing Bochy win this. He’s the one who got it done. I’ve spewed a fair amount of negative vitriol over the past 18 months on this blog, but never anything directed at Bruce. You could look it up—I loved the hire and I’ve always liked his style.

Speaking of 113th…it’s the 113th renewal of the Big Game tomorrow. I read where the Cal players instead of taking their normal classes this week confined studies to just Drama 101. They have to hone their skills so to better sell those phony injuries they come up with to stop play. Fakers!

I Voted for Craig also. he turned around a 100 loss season and he got a good team to the WS. Not a great Team but a good one. Those were some exciting times with Will the Thrill!!

My problem with the Hummer is the racially divided clubhouse he seemed to not just tolerate but foment. It was a long time ago so don’t ask for links, if you were a fan then, you should remember some of it yourself. Clark/Leonard was infamous but there was more: Uribe was disrespected in favor of Robby, the clubhouse was a group of ethnically and racially divided cliques…

  10. Del Mar Dennis's avatar delmardennis said, on November 19, 2010 at 8:35 am

I voted for “Blockhead” and didn’t even give it a second thought. Bochy put on a goddamn managerial clinic throughout the regular season and only stepped up and raised his game another notch or two in the postseason.

How Bochy won the whole shebang with our shitty lineup and NO Whitey on the roster is a goddamn miracle.

As much fun as the Craig era was, there were some problems, as illuminated by Mike. . . . plus, they never even had a lead in that one WS.

And, Charlie Fox was the 1st manager I remember running the team as a kid, but he ain’t on the list. It wasn’t his fault Dave Kingman lost game 2 of the 1971 playoffs.

So, the MOFY honor goes to the Big head cheese . . .

  13. zumarust's avatar zumarust said, on November 19, 2010 at 9:20 am

There were some good seasons with Craig, but the playoff failures, and his over-the-top optimism started to grate. I’m all for optimism, but his eventually ventured into cockiness territory. I remember a Chronicle article where he told the team in Spring Training one season that they were going to win the World Series that year. Why would you tell a team that in Spring Training?
The racial stuff really exploded at exactly the worst time. Right before the start of the ’89 World Series. It became the national story about the Giants that week- the Clark/Leonard hostility. Suddenly Will Clark was in the middle of a media nightmare, when he should have just been focused on the upcoming Series.

  14. zumarust's avatar zumarust said, on November 19, 2010 at 9:25 am

I think it’s pretty much consensus thinking that Craig’s evangelical fervor about the split-fingered pitch led to a lot of sore-armed Giants pitchers.
There was a surprising reference to that in the playoffs this season. I can’t remember which broadcaster said it, in what series, but he was talking about how everyone with the Giants calls Lincecum’s split-fingered pitch a change-up, because the phrase “split-fingered” is still a sore spot in the Giants organization because of the Craig years. Anybody else remember one of the broadcasters saying that? I was surprised to hear one of the national broadcasters have that kind of insight about Giants history.

    • Unca Chuck's avatar Unca Chuck said, on November 19, 2010 at 9:52 am

Yeah, i remember that. It was a pretty big deal near the end of Craig’s tenure . . . The A’s staff was breaking down around the same time with overuse

    • zumarust's avatar zumarust said, on November 19, 2010 at 9:34 am

Yeah, definitely not something a Giants fan wants to be reading right before the start of the ’89 World Series, in a newspaper feature called “World Series Notebook.”

      • zumarust's avatar zumarust said, on November 19, 2010 at 9:35 am

In the Washington Post, no less.

    • xootsuit's avatar xootsuit said, on November 19, 2010 at 10:14 am

yeah. ugly. I remember a Lowell Cohn column in the early 80s doldrum period, when there wasn’t much to write about on either side of the Bay. Cohn dreamed up a “vanilla/chocolate” comparison of the Giants/A’s for the Chron’s Sporting Green one day. Accordiing to Cohn, the Giants were all white and vanilla (Cohn even managed to call Chili Davis white-like), while the A’s were mainly black and hip. I forget how he dealt with the managers. But the entire exercise was craven race-baiting. I hated the little fucker from that day on, and he continued to meet my expectations. I’m glad the paper he writes for these days doesn’t get distributed south of Marin County.

I just read yesterday’s comments. Twin good luck with the tests. I had a CT scan on the liver yesterday (I’m sure they shot more than that). While drinking the CAT scan cocktail that they provided, I realized a few life style changes may be in order for me. I was also thinking about that the clownette and I are tying the knot this weekend (since we already live together this will be more of a marital status change than a life change). Life is always in a state of flux, like last years team and line-ups. One thing that will never be changed is the 2010 Giants are World Champions. This can never be taken away by anybody or anything.
I vote for BRRRRRRRRUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCEEEEEEEE. The greatest manager ever in my books.

  21. Unca Chuck's avatar Unca Chuck said, on November 19, 2010 at 9:58 am

Poor Jimmy Davenport. Loved the guy as a player, but that 62-100 season . . . ouch. . . . Craig was canned in the 1st week IIRC . . .

And their OF was Gladden, Chili Dog, and Hac man . . . Hard to think they did that bad.

  22. San Dog's avatar San Dog said, on November 19, 2010 at 9:59 am

I bet Will Clark, Chris Brown, and Hac-Man were all pricks who were hard to manage. Kevin Mitchell LOVED Craig and Humm Baby got some amazing play out of him that no-one else could. Did he fry a few arms with the split finger? Yes, but he also took a bunch of stiffs and turned them into a pennant-winning staff.
Plus he put a stop to all of the bitching about Candlestick and playing in SF that had become commonplace. If Craig and Rosen don’t dramatically change the culture surrounding the Giants, Barry never later signs here. If Barry never signs here, ATT never gets built (should be called “Barry Bonds Park.” ) If there is no ATT, we ain’t celebrating a championship and probably don’t even have a team in town.

    • stixwiz's avatar stixwiz said, on November 19, 2010 at 10:25 am

Good points, Dawg. Craig and Rosen should both be honored with the Croix de Candlestick, First Class, with Swords and Diamonds for knitting that sow’s ear into a silk purse. Of course, some of the players did help.

I’m going to be a pussy about this.
First, I’ll also have to admit, I had to Google Altobelli and Dark.
I lean towards Bochy obviously and twin, zum, chuck, flav et. al. made a lot of good points about the Craig era. But Dog, stix, ewisco, Kevin, Flav (again?), et.al. reminded me of my less cynical childhood and early adulthood.
Everyone bashes Candlestick but I went to more games over there than ATT so despite the years of failure, there was something special about that place. Especially the bleachers in left field (during the Craig era).
So in the end, I have to vote for…
Charlie Fox. Because he mentored Dave Kingman. Who would be welcome in Room B any day of the year (after all, someone has to catch the rats and mail them off)

Don’t worry my fellow flappers, I only use that info to ban and destroy those who attempt to poison this place. But a word to the trolls: if you are coming here to shit disturb, think again. I’m not some fucking sfgate.com employee bound to job ethics and shit. I’ll do whatever I want to and whatever I have to with your personal information to protect the sanctity of this blog….

Roger Craig would have been the easy choice a year ago, but Bochy brought the title Giants fans have waited years & years for. He galvanized that team with great game calling & great people management that are reserved for the so-called great managers. He became one of those this year (even though it looks like he always was.) Championships change perception. Bochy is on parallel with Tom Coughlin of the football Giants who was thought to be not quite good enough before he won the SB. Next year, when the Giants return to the playoffs, Bochy will get that MOTY that he should have gotten this year. This feels almost weird, probably like how Red Sox fans felt before they became assholes.

Yeah, maybe they were – but over here they were the anti-Yankees when it counted. Anything anti-Yankees still holds some weight with me but I’ve begun to like the Sox less & less every year.

Boise St.’s blue field is unwatchable. They want their program to be taken more seriously, and yet they keep that gimmicky blue football field. It drives some viewers away. It’s hideous. It’s actually kind of surprising the NCAA lets them get away with it. It’s definitely part of the homefield advantage. The visiting team probably has a heck of a time getting used to visual nightmare of that field.

No love at all for Dark, Alou, Altobelli… surprised me to see that Joe had a winning record as a manager. He’s most often in the conversation when discussing the dumbest to win a WS… don’t know about that,he did have some communication issues.. “Duh” caliber… probably one of those guys who you mutter about as you leave the room shirtless.

fondness for Alto merely because he was the mgr in ’78 when I more or less faked being a reporter in Pitts. I think Altobelli, a Rochester, NY guy — like Johnny Antonelli — threw out the first ball this year at opening day for Triple AAA Syracuse. Woooohooo, and I ain’t Nipper of FH.

Say, I do not follow hockey and never even heard of Pat Burns until 7 minutes ago, but I was very impressed w/ his life story. Just learned it. Terrific obit at the LA Times site. Being a former newspaper guy, I confess to a morbid fascination with obits [we always accented the first syllable]. Weird stuff. Like the NY Times has ’em ready to go for famous people. Well, so does AP, I imagine. I’ve mentioned this on my blog, but one of the strangest I ran across was Jeff Willick. 2000. Read it, never forgot it. Stanford guy. 40. A physicist. Cosmologist. Origins of the universe stuff. Sitting at Starbucks and gets killed by a car crashing through the window. Go figure. [Story might be well known to y’all West Coast, Stanford-area folks.]

    • zumarust's avatar zumarust said, on November 19, 2010 at 9:35 pm

The only negative thing about Clark’s game, IMO, was that he almost won a batting title. After that, he seemed to turn into Tony Gwynn on us. He hit 35 homers early in his career, but after flirting with a batting title, he started going for average more, and pitchers started to get him out on the warning track more. We needed more homers from him, and could have sacrificed some batting average, especially in that ’93 season.

      • TedSpe's avatar TedSpe said, on November 19, 2010 at 9:48 pm

You forget, he was batting 7th or 8th when he went career long and he was still a newbie. He was one of those guys opposing pitchers hadn’t figured out yet.
Once they knew he could hit for average and still have some pop, that’s when they put him 3rd.
I even recall when they signed Bonds, they mentioned that Clark still had a higher HR season than Bonds ever had.
        True at that time.
        My…how things changed

Boise up 37-0, of course throws long for another touchdown, in the grand tradition of running up the score in college football.
    —-
And by the way, I may be the only one in the nation who does NOT like the touchdown scored by the junior high team that faked everyone out into thinking it was a deadball situation. If I was the opposing team, I’d take my team off the field and say to the refs “If that touchdown counts, we’re out of here.” The coach of the team that scored must be proud. He taught his team how to be good cheaters. Nixon would approve.

    • TedSpe's avatar TedSpe said, on November 19, 2010 at 9:38 pm

What bugged me was seeing it several times on different news shows, with the newscasters always praising it with such enthusiasm. No thought given at all to the ethics being taught to the junior high kids. All the baloney about fair competition goes out the window.

      • zumarust's avatar zumarust said, on November 19, 2010 at 9:59 pm

I guess it bugged me because I’ve coached some youth sports. I always took the “character building” aspects of the thing seriously. I can’t fathom the coach being proud of scoring a touchdown that way.

I don’t know if the Giants delayed Bumgarner’s call-up to the majors by one game because of the tantrum at Fresno. Joe Martinez lost that start against Baltimore. But I like to think the Giants wanted to send a message to Bumgarner, and they were willing to do the tough thing of starting Martinez that game instead. The Giants showed great integrity there, AND won the World Series. The best of both worlds.
That junior high coach cheated AND lost the game anyway. The worst of both worlds.

  69. zumarust's avatar zumarust said, on November 19, 2010 at 10:18 pm

On the plus side for Fresno St., yeah they lost 51-0, but that was probably a pretty good payday for their sports program, with their share of the gate receipts and it being an ESPN broadcast. In the grand tradition of college sports “blood money.” Although, it is a team in their league, so not as bad as let’s say….that time that UOP went to Nebraska. And didn’t San Jose St. have a game like that this year? They went to Oklahoma or some other top-ranked team.

    • zumarust's avatar zumarust said, on November 19, 2010 at 10:23 pm

I looked it up. San Jose St. started their season by going to Alabama, and losing 48-3. A good payday for the San Jose St. program, and an easy win for Alabama, a win/win situation in the world of college football.
