A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

The Winter Meetings…..

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on November 29, 2010

They start next week on December 6th. Anyone expect Sabean to do anything there? I don’t. In fact, he’s often pulled the trigger the week BEFORE the meetings on his major Winter deals. Therefore, this could be an interesting week. Although outside of signing Miguel Tejada or trading for Jason Bartlett, I don’t see him doing much of anything in the near future. It’s kinda a nice problem to have actually. We just don’t NEED that much. And as nice as it would be to have Uribe come back to play SS, I really think he’s going to the Dodgers on a 2 or 3 year deal…….

Good morning. The Tejada talk has definitely picked up- the idiots Raj Mathai and Jerry Rice ( sorry, Jerry, you’re fucking horrible) made it seem like he was signed last night, ferchrissakes. One year, sure, if they can’t get Juan. Better that than a trade for a low ender. Looking at the winter numbers, Burriss is very disappointing. Not only zero pop ( 2 extra base hits in 90+ AB), but no patience either ( 2 walks). Neither Crawford or Adrianza are playing winter ball. But the left side could still end up way better than thought, Panda seems serious about getting in shape, Gillaspie had a big finish in AA and winter ball, if DeRosa is healthy they’ll have a lot of options…

Wow it worked, I don’t know what happened last week but none of my posts would post!. anyway had some comments on players that were being mentioned in the press but can’t remember who they were. also very busy at work so have not been out here much. Hope everyone had a great weekend. I did. Had Thanksgiving at my house and it was not as crazy as some years. Cold as hell here in N Central Calif. of course not as cold as you mountainmen are seeing. I saw 5 degrees in Tahoe over the weekend.

Playoff shares announced — full share for your World Series Champion (never miss a chance to say it) Giants is $317,631.29. Rounding it down to the nearest penny and then announcing it is insulting as hell. Just say it was 317K and give the remainder to the Junior Giants or some other worthy charity.

Yeah Dennis…The real big winner will be Bengie. As he’s likely to get a full share from both the Giants and Rangers and cash out at close to 564,000.00.

just heard (Buster Olney, so you know it’s a legit rumor) the Dodgers are closing in on a 3 yr deal for Uribe. Wow.

  10. Rough Trade's avatar Rough Trade said, on November 29, 2010 at 10:11 am

Shouldn’t be at all surprising Uribe will get a multi yr deal in this awful FA mkt. Plus, the Dodgers have the added incentive of keeping him from a rival and hoping he can come up big against his former mates.
Frankly though, I don’t think LA is a contender and that’s where Uribe is most valuable-down the stretch.

  11. Giant Head's avatar Giant Head said, on November 29, 2010 at 10:11 am

Hate seeing him go and wearing Dodger Blue, but that is life….but how awful is that Dodger infield? Theriot and Blake? Juan can play both and then just be a backup at short. Makes too much sense for the Dodgers to land him…fuckers!

I would be surprised Tejada would go with a one-year deal with the Cardinals in the mix. I think DeRosa could be as productive as Tejada anyway. Bartlett seems like a simple/smart deal to upgrade defensively at short and Panda better be ready to defend his spot in the rotation. DeRosa will be the Uribe of last year….may be our only trade/free agent signing for the rest of the off-season of non-Giants…Bring on the Belt!

  12. Del Mar Dennis's avatar delmardennis said, on November 29, 2010 at 10:12 am

More power to ’em if Juan can get a 3-yr deal. I thought 2 was a given, but not 3.
Oh well, I’d wish him luck but he’s going to the Dodgers. I hope he takes a dump and swings at everything in the dirt.

And enough of this goddamn Tejada talk. He’s fucking older than Methuselah. NO Whitey and NO Miggy.

If that is true about Uribe and also the inflated contract for Huff due to Colletti than the dude has quite the boner for sticking it to Sabean. The choices he’s making don’t make much sense but I guess he’s into weakening the opponents within the division (see Garland).

Uribe in blue though???? I guess I’ll be torching that #5 jersey.

I’ve got no prob with Juan going to the Dodgers– he’s earned my honor forever regardless of what colors he’s wearing. Get paid man, you deserve it. Plus, I don’t think he’s going to be that productive in another uni, in another park. So, this is probably all going to work out for us in the long run–another overpaid Dodger, I love it….

  23. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on November 29, 2010 at 11:01 am

by the way, what’s up with Waldis Joaquin getting picked up by the White Sox and then refusing the assignment. I guess there’s another team out there who his agent thinks wants him more than the White Sox who he would rather play for. I still don’t understand why he was released. We really don’t have a deep minor league pitching system. In fact, it’s quite weak. Ditching a guy who throws 97mph for….nothing, doesn’t seem like a good idea to me….

If the reports are true it is frustrating as a fan to see Uribe go to LA. I agree with though that it is good for him. He’s cashing in on a strong year. You guys all know I have pulled for Uribe and given him props but I don’t see the guy as having 3 years of top level play. Colletti has got his head in his ass. Of course that’s why he represents blue though. I think it is a job requirement.

Call me crazy, but 3Y/$21M doesn’t seem all that much, why can’t the Giants match that? Especially if the best options really are a washed-up Tejada or Bartlett, who I can’t figure out what the attraction is there. Yes, I’m sorry to see Juan Gone, especially to LA. Damn free agency sucks.

Replacing Uribe’s 24-85 will be a problem, but they’ll have Buster and Ross for a full year so that’ll help along with whatever they can get out of DeRosa.

I’ll miss OOOh-ree-bay and will be forever grateful for his Giantissimus contris, but the plus side of this is that it will force the Gigantes to grow and not try to re-create the same magic. Can’t be that old black (and orange] magic inside. It’s got to a new brand of magic and alchemy inside. And I agree with whoever said it, DeRosa, healthy, could be a huge factor.

Uribe. Good luck. You’ll always be aces with me, regardless of who you play for next. I’ll never forget, well probably never, that CLUTCH HR against the Dodgers in September to win the game 5-4, and salvage the third game of the series. IMO, the biggest regular season hit of the chanmpionship year. If Sabes says I’ll get back to you, and somebody else sticks $21M in my face, I’m gone, too.
DeRosa. I’ll pencil him in for nothing but more appearances on the Razor and Mr. T show. Bad wrists are tricky in baseball. Until he shows in ST that the wrist can take the pounding of thousands of swings during a season, he’s as good as useless right now.
Panda. Huge. No, not his waist. The offseason fat farming results. If he comes out of it a changed player, that changes everything on the IF and OF rotations.
Miggy. I’ll hold my nose on a 1 and 1 deal. He’s better than Rent was in the field, but at bat, he’s lookin a little creaky. Serviceable for a year as a stopgap. And Baer can promote him with a “Guess Miggy’s real age” night…

Bartlett looked like he had a career year in 09 and then got off the juice. hardy started strong but then has faded the last two. between them you’re looking at .270, 50 rbi, 10-15 hr. but not sure how that translates to pacbelle. also not sure about range but assume it’s reasonable.

  41. dirtnrocksnreno's avatar dirtnrocksnreno said, on November 29, 2010 at 2:05 pm

Sandoval gets closer to 2009 output than 2010, Ross locks down RF full time, Huff is back, full year of Bustermania, Sanchez plays to his average, DeRosa is/stays healthy, Torres maintains. That’s a pretty good core. Add another stick and Sabean/Bochy could entertain the idea of a light hitting plus defender manning SS.

This isn’t a major blow. More like LA grasping at straws.

    So long Juan Uribe.

  42. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on November 29, 2010 at 2:16 pm

With Uribe gone, the master utility man is gone. He covered the SS position for himself, and for Rent. And 3rd, and 2nd if needed. Nobody else in the barn now can cover the SS position, that we know of. Rohlinger? Feh. Burriss? Defensively, maybe, but brings little else. The SS guys in the minors are questionmarks, at best. The team needs a dependable glove at SS, hitting from that spot is secondary. Sabes will earn a lot of his salary getting that position secured. I said last off season to get Scutaro. Few agreed, but now he’s on the list of possibles…

    • twinfan's avatar twinfan said, on November 29, 2010 at 4:54 pm

Well, Crawford’s glove is said to be MLB ready, certainly better than most of the suspects available… Signing Tejada would probably be the prudent choice in that he’d be third base insurance as well as SS. As 2010 clearly showed, giving “Bonehead” flexibilty kinda works…

Juan Gone. Be happy with the dinero, Dude and thanx for the memories. SF should not be gun-shy in making a deal with the Twins for Hardy. With Minnesota money down on Nishioka already, JJ may be a bit of a luxury as a backup for the Twinks. Good thing for the Giants is that between free agency and arbitration Minnesota has lost a huge chunk of its bullpen. Some combination like Romo and Hinshaw should do it. If they play hardball, offer them Minnesota boy Steve Edlefsen (a relief standout at Fresno) straight up or maybe toss in arbitration-due Fontenot for shits n giggles.

I was 19 or 20, from a whiskey- drinking background, and it took me an instant to figure out what the guy wanted me to do. The stuff was pretty sour. Hmmm. Why risk it? Ah, yes! I smiled. Is it just me or has anyone else noticed? You’ve never seen Barry Zito and Alex Smith in the same room together

Flav has a good point about Singletary. I obviously don’t get to see too much of the 49ers, nor Singletary’s news conferences (because I am in Colorado) , but I just saw him on Monday Night Football after the game and in the first minute of the news conference, he said, “I got to look at the film” and this was in regard to a question about Gore being injured. Just wondering if he is going to consult with doctors too? Hmm.

A minute later, the same “got to look at the film” line. Obviously, Singletary missed his true calling . . . as a film editor.

Dispatch from The Blogger Formerly Known As “O Me of Meager Hope.” Someone [he happens to be in COLORADO!!!] ferreted [Ferreted?] out an exceedingly morose and gloomy-doomy observation regarding our beloved World Champion Giants emailed by me on JUNE 28. And I mean gloomy! Despair on June 28!

Ah, it is so sweet to be wrong. Sometimes.

What a year 2010 baseball was for me: starting with Triple A opening day with Joe Altobelli, seeing Strasburg three times in AAA, then his debut, then two games in Pittsburgh, then in Philly when we clinched, then Game 1 in SF. Living large. (Not an oblique reference to the Cialis commercial aforementioned.)

In the spirit of mea culpa’s, my bad was predicting the G-Men would only win 83 games this year . . . Never been so happy to be wrong.

I think I tried to date Mea Culpa in 8th grade; shot down.

Gore is out for the year and they need to beat either Green Bay or San Diego to have any chance for the division. Won’t happen. And it won’t happen with this Smith. They’ll fuck him up too. They would have fucked up Rodgers. They’d fuck up Montana.

7-9 can win the division, Mike. Lose to SD and GB, but win the 3 div games, and the Niners win the tiebreakers.
