A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Trades

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on December 7, 2010

I think most of us understand that Sabes won’t be pulling the trigger on any trades this week. That’s actually fine with me, he’s not very good at them—unless you want to go back 14 years or whatever. There might have been 2 or three since then, too…….

Trade proposals, generated by fans,  are one of the easiest ways to get me to go ballistic. The common fan has half the trade proposal down pat: he is goddamn crystal clear on who he wants to ACQUIRE. He wants Hanley. He wants Reyes. He wants Mauer—guys he’s seen featured on ESPN sound bites. Now comes  the hard part–who does he give up? Hmmmmm. Er…..Ummmmm. A sticking point. “I don’t want to give up anyone good,” Common Fan #1 thinks to himself. See, this is when the trade proposal fantasies usually start to break down. Quickly, Common Fan #1 defaults to listing off about 5 AAAA guys on the roster as the chum used to secure this *blockbuster deal*.  For our purposes, that would be listing off as many Bowker Gang guys as possible—whether they’re still in the organization or not…….

Tip #1: Just because you think the player is valuable doesn’t mean anyone else does. You may remember John Bowker hitting 2 home runs in his first week at the Bigs but no one else does. And even if they do, they don’t give a shit about this. They care about his body of work since. Not pretty.

Tip #2: you’ve got to give up something to get something. There has to be REAL value in your part of the offer. The trick to a good trade is to finding MORE value in what you acquire than what your trading partner thought they had. But NO ONE is interested in securing any of our *Bowker Gang* guys for anything that we or the rest of the world would perceive as valuable—no matter how many of them you try to throw in—-4. 5. 6. Lots of Bowker Gang guys doesn’t sweeten the deal at all. If the Reno Aces team plane goes down killing everyone inside, you might get Kevin Towers to look at a package for all our Bowker Gang players—just don’t expect Justin Upton to be the guy we get in return……

Tip #3: Look at something other than the back of a player’s baseball card. Anyone can see what a player has done. Projecting what they might do in the future, based off underlying Sabermetric figures, is how to go about securing a sound trade haul. There’s obvious risk involved with this but this is the best way to go about hitting the big score on a trade—whether you just get lucky or whether you saw something in a player that no one else did, that’s the way to go about tipping a trade in your favor……

My favorite arm chair GM is sophthesilliest (or is that sophSyphilis?) from the splash. The dude must have a payroll of 500 mil. But, I do respect his wisdom like this one from yesterday, “Our window of opportunity to repeat is not long.”. Yup, we only have this year to repeat.
Or this one, “Crawford is still out there….as is a big trade if we are aggressive about seeking it. If not, expect trades at mid-year.”
That is one fucking wise dude.

That’s when I always think that Soph is Nipper. That same sort of bland, weird, almost third-person existence on the blog, like he’s appointed himself the narrator. “Meanwhile, back at the ranch….”

You’re foolishly misinformed. You only make yourself foolish and stupid with false accusations. Stick to the facts, guy. Don’t get arrogant with me. You are not that smart yourself, fool.

The biggest mistake Blog GMs make, however, is not understanding that good young players under control for more than a year or two DO NOT GET TRADED. I don’t want to hear about the exceptions,of course there are a few, but the rule stands. Those first six years are golden for the team- they’re paying waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay under market value. If a Braun is traded, it’s in year 5 or 6, not 2 or 3…

Yeah I sure get tired of the rants on the Splash, “the Giants still need a bat”!. Crap the guys they suggest, well the opposing GM starts the conversation with “Cain, Timmy, Jonathan, Madison. So why even open that conversation!! They are ridiculous over on the Splash.

    • Nipper's avatar Nipper said, on December 7, 2010 at 8:37 am

If you don’t value the Splash, that’s fair enough. Still why read something you don’t find anything of value?

      • zumarust's avatar zumarust said, on December 7, 2010 at 8:41 am

I don’t read all of the Splash. I have several posters on “Ignore” over there, including you. There are a few folks worth reading over there. I don’t have to read some idiot like Soph to know what he’s going to post. It’s the same repetitious junk over and over. No improvement, no change.
No improvement, and no change- Who else does that sound like, Nipper?

Mets are reported zeroing in on Ronny Paulino. Don’t know if the Giants, who possessed his services for less than 24 hours last year, had any interest, but now the point grows moot. One of the better backup catchers out there, i would think.

I’ve never caught Singletary’s “show” on KNBR before, until this morning. Man, is he a jerk like that every time? All he gave was short, hostile answers to their softball questions. Totally defiant the whole way. Granted, it’s not a fun part of the job to have to do regular media sessions, but he could at least show some professional courtesy and class. I actually felt sorry for the morning show guys. Not fun to deal with that every week.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on December 7, 2010 at 9:19 am

Zum, today was actually one of his better weekly KNBR interviews. He was far more hostile and evasive earlier in the year. And he came on late this morning, probably by choice, not accident. They cut this one short, even after a late start. Not only is he a clueless HC, he’s become a terrible face of the organization. Since Day 1 he has come across as if the media and Niner fans are to be tolerated, nothing more. The Channel 5 interview was the pinnacle of embarassment to the organization. Nolan was positively Mooch-like compared to this dude. If he were 8-4, well, whatever. Not acceptable at 4-8. Good riddance soon enough…

    • Del Mar Dennis's avatar delmardennis said, on December 7, 2010 at 9:31 am

Believe it or not, that was one of the coach’s more congenial appearances on the morning show. The terse and mostly curt answers are the norm. You never expect to gleam many insights from a show such like that, but he could at least have the common courtesy to show some decorum with his answers and attitude. He’s nothing but a major disappointment on and off the field.

    El Presidente vs. Paulino (2010)

    ABs 126 vs. 316
    BA .238 vs. .259
    Slg .397 vs. .354
    OBP .299 vs. .311
    OPS .645 vs. .665
    SOs 35 (28%) vs. 51 (16%)

Looks like the main difference offensively is contact, which we already knew is the bugaboo with Whiteside. Dunno how they compare defensively. I’d pick the guy who strikes out only about 1/2 as much as the other guy….

I have not read back other comments yet, but I just saw that Mercury story stating Sabean/ownership is willing to go to $120 million on payroll..that is so nice to hear.

I dont think they will actually do that this year and instead keep it close to $110 mill (maybe they will then have trade flexibility during the year), but when we start thinking of keeping Timmy and Cain long-term and then is 3-4 years having to lock up Jesus and the Bum, will pray that ownership will keep up the spirit of having a payroll in the upper third in baseball. That is how we will stay competitive, but not throwing it away on the Jayson Werth”s of the world. No more Aaron Rowand contracts either for non-SF homegrown free agents…

What are people’s thoughts trying to get the Cards ex-SS Ryan in a minor trade and letting him in and compete with Fontenot for the backup SS job instead of trading for Bartlett???

The Nats might be the dumbest run franchise in the history of baseball. Now it sounds like they are in the Mix for Lee, willing to offer a 7th year. Here’s the deal: a team like the Nats CANNOT be wrong with a even one mega signing. If they sign Lee, they will be locked up with TWO guys who are STARTING their deals in their early 30’s. The odds that one or both of them avoid significant injury and/or performance decline are impossibly high. And they will have no money to fix the gigantic holes created by these blunders. Totally stupid…

  18. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on December 7, 2010 at 1:48 pm

The Giants and the Nats are in two totally different financial situations. The Giants can fuck up a couple big signings and still compete. The Yankees can fuck up ten of them and it doesn’t phase them in the slightest. The Nats? They can’t fuck up even one of them, much less two of them……
