A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Mark DeRosa

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on February 23, 2011

They’re saying he’s healthy and that he’s going to be “Super Utility Man!” I just don’t think it’s going to shake out that way. I think he’s going to get significant playing time at one of the infield spots. Tejada is really more of a third baseman at this point.  If Pablo is raking I could see them moving him back to first base, slide Tejada over to third and flip Huff to the OF…..

And he could easily end up at 2nd base since Franchez is always a mere mole’s whisker away from another knee injury….

And if Pablo still can’t hit………

There’s always an outfield spot to consider……..

Hey Flappers, how has everyone been?

I tend to agree with you Flav that I see DeRosa doing more short and third than people expect. I caught that they were trying to land Jason Bartlett but could not pull a trade off with the Rays, so indicates they may be a little nervous about Tejada’s durability at short.

I would not be surprised come July, Tejada is mostly manning third and if we dont have a new person playing short from within (Burriss or Crawford) or without the organization, then DeRosa and Fontenot may be getting the majority of starts.

I think you wrote last week about Panda being the backup catcher (Twin may have thrown that out there last year along with some others as well). It makes perfect sense to me. With the Burrells, Rowands and others on the roster, can we throw a roster spot away just on a Whiteside-level catcher????

I dont think wasting a roster space is worth it. Panda would only have to catch one day a week at the most and if that changes they can bring Whiteside back. But having Panda as the backup, gives them much better flexibility in possibly having to have an extra infielder (Travis) or outfielder (Rowand or Nate).

I can see Panda playing catcher once a week, first base 3 times a week and third twice a week. Days Panda is at first, Huff in left (3 games a week). Days Huff at first (3 games a week), Burrell in left three games a week. I dont think we need Burrell out there more than that unless he gets hot and stays hot. I think they are going to give Rowand a couple of starts a week to see if they can market him, so Torres playing left instead of Burrell is logical.
    Roster:

    Catchers – Posey
IF – Panda (1B), Franchez (2B), DeRosa (SS), Tejada (3B)
OF – Huff (LF), Torres (CF), Ross (RF)

Bench: Fontenot (2B-SS), Travis (1B), Rowand (CF), Burrell (LF), Burriss or Nate for the last spot. Belt will displace one of them by June I hope.

Off this subject, Henry has a good piece on Torres and ADD- it should put to rest any talk that he might be one who got a bogus diagnosis…
I shudder to think of DeRosa at SS, LF is his best position- it works best for the team if he can’t gain a regular spot…

    Can’t see DeRosa at SS.

    06- 7 games at SS
    07- 1
    08- 1
    09- 0
    10- DL

Or Pablo as a backup C. Ain’t gonna happen. He’s working his ass to be a solid 3b and shouldn’t have to think about anything else.

  7. twinfan's avatar twinfan said, on February 23, 2011 at 9:07 am

Chuckles is who has pushed for Panda to “strap it on”…his best potential is at third. If Buster moves to another position, I see it being when Tommy Joseph is ready..

I like Panda at backup catcher rather than 1st base. . . . I mean if ishi isn’t the backup 1st baseman, what is he? Will he make it thru ST?

Ishi has to be on the short list of players on the trading hot seat. There are too many other 1b eligible and OF position players in competition to have the luxury of a PH / defensive replacement that basically plays only 1b, though he does that very well….

But was it a “knee” injury? I thought shoulder. Or are there more inuries I don’t know about

  10. Unca Chuck's avatar Unca Chuck said, on February 23, 2011 at 9:39 am

Speaking of permanent Roon B denizens . . . look up one post.

I have no idea how good DeRosa is at short. Is he even a viable option there? Font certainly is not. And I don’t think there is any way Panda gets much time at 1st. He’s 3rd all the way. Which means Tejada is locked in at SS. I mean look at his numbers. Not to jinx this shit, but Tejada has played pretty much a full load every season since 1999.

Lineup flexibility is nice, but I’m sure Bochy would rather have the guys he plugs in do well enough to keep their spots. Meaning Huff at 1st, Panda at 3rd, Tejada at SS. All the lineup flimflammery was due to guys sucking at vairous times. The OF will be a little more fluid with the mercurial Burrell out there. He dictates a lot of the changes that happen in the lineup. Mainly how much playing time De Rosa gets.

Seems like the OF is pretty crowded right now, Burrell, Ross, Rowand Schierholtz, Torres, will there be enough playing time for De Rosa? He will probably be used in the OF for the most part and some IF work. And then what if Belt makes it out of ST on to the Roster?? What is the story with Ford, Guillen, Neall, Peguero?

  14. Macdog's avatar Macdog said, on February 23, 2011 at 10:28 am

The best options for DeRosa are probably 3B, especially vs. lefties, and 2B since, as Flav suggested, there should be plenty of times over 162 games where Franchez just won’t be able to limp out there. As for LF to spell Burrell, it’s already cluttered with either Huff filling in to give Ishi a start, which likely means vs. righties, or moving Torres to LF to get everyone’s favorite CF an occasional start. However this shakes out, it’s really gonna be fun trying to project the day-to-day lineup this season.

  15. twinfan's avatar twinfan said, on February 23, 2011 at 10:34 am

GHead- you aer tied with Blade and MacDog for the contest-tie breaker is first Cactus HR for a Giant- send me your pick.

  16. twinfan's avatar twinfan said, on February 23, 2011 at 10:41 am

IMO the best configuration is Huff/Burrell LF, Huff, Ishikawa or Belt 1B. I know he’s great defensively, but it wouldn’t hurt my feelings at all if Fruckie lost the second base jiob to DeRosa,,,

    • Del Mar Dennis's avatar delmardennis said, on February 23, 2011 at 11:03 am

  24. xootsuit's avatar xootsuit said, on February 23, 2011 at 2:34 pm

I don’t think the Giants could’ve told Benji no. All the stories I read when the playoffs started said Benji would get a ring and a WS share if the Giants and Rangers faced each other, based on rules outside the Giants sole discretion. (Hope somebody looks it up.)

Today’s BB appears to have a miniature devil on her shoulder urging her to go adhead, have some fun.

  25. Unca Chuck's avatar Unca Chuck said, on February 23, 2011 at 2:44 pm

Well, maybe not Bengie (although I still think it’s soleley up to the Giants), but Freddie? Ford? it’s up to them.

  26. xootsuit's avatar xootsuit said, on February 23, 2011 at 2:57 pm

Reading Baggs carefully, it appears that the teams set the rules way ahead of time, and the Giants’ rule heading into the PS was that any player who had service with the club in 2010 was entitled to a ring and some sort of of pro rata share. The stories about Benji getting a ring no matter what definitely preceded the WS. As Baggarly suggest — Guillen and Bowker and Martinez should get rings under the rule, but Frandsen, who was traded during ST, apparently not.

  27. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on February 23, 2011 at 3:08 pm

The Gyros can give rings to whomever they want. If they limited the rings to players to those with “service time” in 2010, the MLB defintion of that, which apparently includes being on the DL when the season starts, puts a ring on Fred’s finger. That’s my interpretation, which could be off base. Weird due to the circumstance, and illogical IMHO since he contributed nothing to the season, but whatever. When you win only one WS every 56 years, it’s nice to be generous when you win it. Murph’s second cousin probably gets one…

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on February 23, 2011 at 6:34 pm

Murphy or Rohand at $12 million? Yikes, I might have to take Rohand. This trade shows yet again why the NBA sucks. And Carmello forces a trade to where he wants to play, after essentially half a season of angst. Because of hiw whim and his wife’s to be in NY, a dozen players move. Trades are made not to improve teams, but to unload salary, and meet petulant demands of ner’ do wells. The Jazz unloaded Williams today, less than two weeks after Sloan quit because they were head butting each other. WTF was that all about? The NBA is a joke, only 4 or 5 teams have a shot at winning the title every year, and you can’t tell me there was no more to the referee scandal that just Donaghue being a “rogue” ref. Nice coverup job by Stern and ESPN…

    • unca chuck's avatar unca chuck said, on February 23, 2011 at 6:34 pm

So Wright, the guy they got for J-Rich, goes for Troy Murphy? Then buy him out>? Brilliant.

Christ, I thought the new guys in charge were supposed to be better than the guys who left.

Shit, only in the NBA can you languish on the bench, make $10 mill, get traded and bought out for another $12 mill and never see the fucking floor.
