A Place To Talk About Giants Baseball

Nate’s on the Block Pittsburgh Time and Unfortunately the Sharks Won

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on April 26, 2011

According to a tweeter, the Giants are making it known that Nate is on the block. Tough to decide if he’d bring any value at all. He’s more productive than Bowker and Franny. Freddy put up much better numbers than Nate did last year, but Freddy was starting full time. We got very little for those 3 guys. Cash? Something like that. With Ishikawa slipping through waivers untouched, a guy who’s basically the same as Nate (can hit a little with great defense) I really have no idea what we could get from Nate. Probably more cash, that’s about it…….

I hate hockey. The year they sat out was the greatest year of my life. I love pretty much all sports, I just never got into hockey. Bummed they won last night, it means my facebook news page will remain cluttered up with Sharks shit…..

I am intrigued by the Pirates this year. Not only do they have a ton of stud position players who are fast and who have power but they’ve got a closer who throws harder than Wilson–with location. The reason they aren’t winning their division right now is easy to pinpoint: Kevin Correia is their ace. We should beat them but man, if that team ever gets any starting pitching, watch out……..

The Flap Fantasy  League Standings (Denny makes a move, Kevin free falls, FH continues to do her best impersonation of Jim Marshall and Ed almost unbelievably drops another point (the lowest point total any team  can have is 14)…..

Maybe it’s just my skewed sense of humor, but Edd’s post of the day had me LQTM all day yesterday. “Orbo loves all things Molina”— that’s gold, baby….

Funny. It inspired me to pick up Jose Molina in FL. I was away from internet connection and missed out on Heyward’s explosion against SF. Damnit! Runs scored is my biggest deficit.

flav, Pirates have been awful for quite a while…they can’t score enough to offset pitching woes. The McDonald guy they start tomorrow is the guy the Dodgers dumped, right?
Their division has a lot of warm weather hitters parks, so I would think your philosophy has to be either good pitching or solid bash. Giants pitching last season shut down the bash teams like Texas and Philly, which had to send a message to others you can win like that, home or away. Pirates philosophy seems to be take the money and run.

Flav, have you never been to a playoff hockey game, especially in San Jose? There is nothing quite like it…intense!

I am looking for a Capitals-Sharks Stanley Cup…now I know shit about hockey, but put it this way, I have my playoff beard going!

Now that we are back back from our Outer Banks vacation and dodging tornados, I am ready to make my fantasy run….

I know nothing about Hockey or Soccer. I would have to watch it with someone who really knows the games. Also with hockey there appears to be so many cheap shots and the league doesn’t do a whole lot about it. they need to clean that shit up. I mean putting a guy in a coma is just not good.

Hockey is great live. On TV. Not so much. Too bad for Schierholtz. I think he’s got more value than Ishikawa and Lewis but not much. He’s a great fit for SF but obviously caught up in the numbers. Especially if Belt goes to the OF when he returns. Announcing this as they pull into Pitt is a bit ominous. Maybe he’s staying.

I’ve been to one hockey game in my life. I can’t remember who was playing but I’m pretty sure it was before the Sharks arrived. Some kind of exhibition game. I sat around for about 45 minutes watching men skate back and forth, I got up to get a beer and a dog. While in line, I heard a roar from the crowd. I got back to my seat and my friend told me so-and-so scored. I then spent the rest of the game watching men skate back and forth.

    Well, Nate can’t hit, a a major problem for a corner outfielder…
Pittsburgh has no interest in competing. They are one of the teams pocketing revenue money- all the while being one of baseball’s most profitable teams ( 30 million profit in 2007 and 2008 as per SI) even as they’ve had 18 consecutive losing seasons..
They’ve never figgered out how to make the puck more visible for TV. That’s why hockey looks like a bunch of morons wandering aimlessly, intent on mayhem. Oh, That’s the idea? Sorry..

this pitcher that they’re running out tonight might be better than expected.

As for hockey, I actually enjoy it both live (though don’t get to many) and on tv (now that it’s on HD). One way to clean up the brutality is to impose the following: you knock someone out of the game, you can’t come back until they do. Very simple. guy out two months with a concussion, you’re out two months without pay. Career ending? too damn bad for you.

    Could work for football too.

Lived in Long Beach at one time and often got free tickets to the minor league hockey team there. If the home team scored 3 times in the third period there were free unlimited wings at Hooters. Normally I would never go to a place that would exploit women in such a way but I was willing to compromise for free food. I lived in Germany for a while after Long Beach and in a strange twist ran into a bunch of the minor league players from Long Beach on loan to a club there.

  17. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on April 26, 2011 at 10:59 am

I noted before that Deadspin published the Pirates financials a while back, along with the Marlins and some other clubs. Under McClatchy they finally figured out that the town is Steelers first forever, Penguies a pretty slack second, and Pirates are out there becalmed in the horse latitudes of fan attention. They don’t need to compete for the ownership to make piles of dough. So now they’re not even going after FAs. Just go with the draft every year, see what happens. If a couple of blue chippers show up, great, a few more butts in the seats is gravy…

  18. snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on April 26, 2011 at 11:09 am

Hockey is OK, I suppose. If you gave me a free ticket to a Sharks game, I’d go. Same deal with the Warriors? You’d have to give me the free ticket AND pay me to go. I never understood the hockey fighting. On every play in football, guys are banging, punching, hitting, yelling at/insulting each other. But rarely any fights. Hockey? A guy gets poke checked or slammed into the side a little wrong, and it’s on, or the goon comes in and takes care of business. Then, when a guy gets cold cocked from behind with a stick, the perp gets 5 games suspension or something similarly lame, while the victim is out for the year. If that happens on the street, you’re in prison for a decade. Kinda stupid, if you ask me…

Casual hockey fan, root for the Devils. I agree with Dirt, the game is so much better in person, the closer the better. And playoff hockey is ferocious. It’s funny, I don’t know if you see this much out west, but the diehard fans here in the east coast are adamant that no sport is the equal of hockey.

It’s been sad to see the Pirates’ deterioration. They’re one of the great historic franchises and were such a powerhouse in the 70s. It seems like a longshot, but maybe someday they’ll get their act together and be a team that matters again in that city and MLB in general.

I just don’t like Hockey. In person I’ve seen it a few times. On TV forget it. Of course I’m not too crazy about basketball either. The coaches intrude too much in basketball. They should do something about the final two minutes. Both sports insist their coaches must have business suits. Pure BS.

    • mrmrbill's avatar mrmrbill said, on April 26, 2011 at 3:06 pm

I have always liked the old pictures where the MLB manager is wearing a suit and wouldn’t mind seeing a return to it. Definately wouldn’t want to see hoodies and the full uniform doesn’t make sense to me as it is.

      • mrmrbill's avatar mrmrbill said, on April 26, 2011 at 3:44 pm

Dirt, for the nannies and parole officers, I was referring primarily to NBA coaches. And they should wear hats with cop car “antlers”, flashing red and blue lights, just so the players feel comfortably at home.

For MLB, I like the “older veteran ex-player full uni” look. Kinda like Yoda with stirrups. 🙂

Baseball hurts. I understand why fans find fantasy leagues fun. If you want to plug into the day to day infor on players beyond your favorite team, or its division, fantasy leagues plugs you in. If you want to plug into, if only in part, every game played every day, fantasy baseball plugs you in. But fantasy players are fungible. They aren’t real; they don’t fail the same way real players fail. They don’t hurt. Somewhere tonight, fantasy league people are trading messages about Tejada. (Hey, dickhead, bet you’re glad you took my trade for TejNADA last week!) But in reality there’s nothing painless about Tejada’s struggle. I want him to succeed for the Giants sake, and for his own. Nothing but hurt, so far.

The only thing that bugs me about FL is when someone starts rooting for a player going up against the Giants. I have Morton as a pitcher and I’m happy as hell he’s not getting a win tonight (even though I need Wins). Now I just want the Giants to put these guys away.

actually you are wrong on this. I play in some high stakes leagues. I die hard and celebrate wildly based off of some of my players performances……

Wow. With all due respect to Rowand, I don’t think he gets to that one.

“All due respect” in The Sopranos is a prelude to someone getting whacked, or at least insulted.

Question for Mr. Fantasy League (Flav) . . . Have you ever seen anyone only have 16 points? Ed is down another 7 tonight thus far . . . evening is still young though. He may hit rock bottom at 14.

    Sigh.

How do you see real time #s for FL? I thought it just updated in the AM. Or are you just doing the math?

Anyone else done with kruk’s new “spit on em” thing? Tejada didn’t spit on that he waived right through it like a clueless rookie pussy

Who said Ford wouldn’t make a difference?

  71. DJLoo's avatar DJLoo said, on April 26, 2011 at 7:55 pm

Ford’s definitely a weapon. Looked like Mookie Wilson going 1st to 3rd.

I greatly appreciated that comment the first time you posted it, DJL.

I don’t think those running plays really show up in the STATs. Know what I mean?

    • dirtnrocksnreno's avatar dirtnrocksnreno said, on April 26, 2011 at 8:50 pm

Whole play was a non-stat. Awesome

  75. DJLoo's avatar DJLoo said, on April 26, 2011 at 7:57 pm

Did he do that on his own?

    • xootsuit's avatar xootsuit said, on April 26, 2011 at 8:00 pm

No. I saw Flannery say “go go go” soon after Ford slid in safe at home.
