Vogelsong to the Rescue and a Niner Draft Wish

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on April 28, 2011

Volgelsong versus Karstens. Man, I bet the Pitt fans turn out in droves to catch this match up. Is it possible to log a negative attendance figure?

I’m not worried about this hitting slump. They went through this stuff last year, it doesn’t last and they’ll hit out of it soon enough. Like everyone else, I like the numbers Burriss has put up and it will be interesting to see if he can hit now. I don’t put a lot of stock into all those sb’s, Decker is sending his runners on every pitch. The only thing I care about with Burriss is, has he learned how to bunt?

Big Niner Draft today. I’m a little sluggish for this one with all the lock out bullshit going on. I’m guessing that Harbaugh trades down and ends up picking up either Dalton or Locker with a late first round pick. I think both of those guys are going to have a good NFL career, Locker especially. That guy had a shit O-line and literally no TE during his time at Washington. And I am double-down with the guys that go back to finish school. He’s big, he’s a leader and I think he’s going to have a very good pro career, hopefully with the Niners…….

If Peterson falls all the way to 7, the Niners would be fools not to take him. Many considered him to be the best player in college football last year and if you can get him at #7, you say Holuy Keith Smart!

Vogelsong with a shutout! If they can avoid the rain….

Peterson 1 and Dalton 2 is what I hope for. They may need to trade up in front of AZ to get Dalton, or possibly even Locker . . .

Flav, you need to keep doing the one or two line running commentary on the Flap league in your opening monologue . . . ala’ “Fuck you Bozo gains 6 and change against PawliesPandas, while Berra’s Bombers discover new ways of losing. Blade, No Whitey and Flav all have miserable “ofers” in the standings.”

Blade, I know, just mailed it in today. I’ll start doing it again tomorrow. The reason I think the Niners trade down is because Peterson won’t be there and they can’t afford to wait till rd 2 for a QB. Plus if they traded their 7 pick down to 21 or so and added another 3rd or 4th rounder, that’s all good, right?

  6. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis said, on April 28, 2011 at 7:33 am

First off, how the hell is it possible for Ed to have 13 1/2 pts? I thought 14 was the floor. Give the poor bloke a break. He’s been busy preparing for the big wedding tomorrow.

What looked like at least a 50/50 chance of getting Patrick Peterson just a few days ago is now looking like a long shot, IMO. I don’t think ARZ is taking Gabbert at 5, so they’re going to take the BPA left and that’s Peterson. Which leaves Gabbert sitting there at 7 for the 49ers. Maybe they can trade down with the Skins or someone else, I sure in the hell don’t won’t Gabbert.

We already drafted Alex Smith once, I sure the fuck don’t want to draft him again.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on April 28, 2011 at 7:37 am

!4 isn’t the “floor.” There are 10 categories, so 10 is the absolute floor. Quite frankly, I think Orb has something up his sleeve and is lulling us into some sort of complacency. Tricky Brits 🙂

If AZ takes Peterson, the Niners defintely need to get in front of them come round 2. Whoever is left will get taken by AZ.

And yeah, they might trade out of the 7 spot to someone that wants to get Gabbert.

The Giants might need to seriously consider giving Posey some starts at firstbase when he isn’t catching. I don’t know if they can afford to rest Posey 25 games this season. This isn’t going to work with Whiteside getting 25 starts this season, and Posey sitting.

The Giants definitely need to try some youth in the infield. But the hitting is what is holding them back. I agree with Flav, given time the hitters will come around.
The QB’s the Niners should look at : Locker, Ponder, Dalton and Stanzi.
Peterson is the BEST player out there, makes your Defense and Special teams better from day one. If he is available at #7 the Niners had better take him.

Ahh, April and i hear birdsong. Sweet music, indeed. Language lesson for the day: The German word for bird is Vogel. Any questions? It looks now as if there will be a strong temptation for Zito’s injury to linger and linger…unless, of course, there is interest sometime between now and the deadline for a heavily financially discounted availability for his services by some squad (most likely in the Junior Circuit) jonesing for a starter.

Ooh, and that bullpen. Most games and the opposition goes down quietly when those boys go to work. Affeldt was properly utilized today ~ as a situational loogie. Did his job just fine. No drama today from our .38 Special in the 9th. Must have been the miniscule crowd. That one craves an audience ~ preferably a huge, national one.

Whodda thunk it a couple weeks back but Rowand delivers and delivers, getting all the way up to 8 RBI’s even before April is in the books. Buncha thieves on this team ~ curiously not including Ford, who did not appear and Burriss, the other usual suspect. Nate, getting into that act and adding a couple of hits to up his average into the .280’s, may be starting to draw a bit of interest from other teams now. Ahh, motivation.

Another series win. Evened the season’s record at a dozen either way. Some were predicting a worse April. Hitting still sputtery, particularly with RISP (witness the pair of gdp’s), but the ability to advantage the other team’s mistakes is the mark of a champion. And that pitching!!! Anybody else hearing the dulcet tones of that Little Birdie that Could?

    Zito got Wally Pipped today.

Come on. “Voggy” clearly isn’t a “Welly”, he seems to be better, an actual pitcher. But he’s just a fill-in guy. If he has another good start the scouts will out whatever holes he has and he’ll free fall into Nowhereland. He pitched a get-away-day-game to a bunch of kids who had no idea who he even was or what he throws. Let’s just be happy with anything good he gives us while Zito is gone……….

He struck out 8 guys. I like that number, in 5 2/3. And he walked just 2, didn’t walk 5, like Zits might have…

Dalton’s the best guy out there, but he won’t last til 45. They have to trade up in front of AZ and Wash to get. If it’s Mallett, well, Smith will be a better option.

  69. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on April 28, 2011 at 8:30 pm

Well, I’m a huge “Fuck Mallet” guy. But again, I have ultimate faith in Jim Harbaugh. If he thinks he can help a guy turn a corner, I’m double down-2 thumbs up……….

Still can’t get over the Niners picked a 20 year old guy.

Aldon Smith won’t be an impact guy until 2013, if then. It’s too much like Balmer, and it may end up the same way. A wasted pick.

  71. unca chuck's avatar unca chuck said, on April 28, 2011 at 8:32 pm

A fucking sophomore? Man, I don’t get it. Cam Jordan would have been better.

They could have traded down 12 picks and still had Smith. They should have traded down with Jax.

I think Harbaugh and Fangio are comfortable working with young college guys open to being coached. Chuck, you’re too blinded by all the shitty coaches we’ve had over the last decade. Give these guys a chance, they just might know what they’re doing………

“Aldon Smith won’t be an impact guy until 2013, if then. It’s too much like Balmer, and it may end up the same way. A wasted pick.”

BULLSHIT Chuck . . . Scout analysis says, “Smith arrived on the scene in 2009 and made an immediate impact in the Big 12 as one of the leagues better defenders. He possesses terrific size and growth potential and has the versatility to be used in a variety of positions. Smith is an athletic player who makes a tremendous amount of plays in the box and up the field, and he will quickly produce in the NFL for a creative defensive coordinator who puts him in positions to be successful.”

The problem is, they need an NT. They get a project DE. Coaching up is fine, but Aldon Smith isn’t close to being ready to being a 4 down guy. He needs 2-3 years, even with great coaching. A guy like Phil Taylor would have made more sense. He’s older, stronger, and fills a bigger need, with Franklin going.

They may do well the rest of the way, but taking projects with the 7th pick pisses me off.

I assume Harbaugh has some kind of QB situation in the bag. The Niners have maybe the worst QB situation in the NFL, yet picked none of the top QBs, and got instead a DE that most think got picked at least half a dozen or more picks too soon. And they left the Prince on the board. He’s got my benefit of the doubt, but if he thinks Alex can play a main QB role to help him get to a division win, he’s bat stuff crazy…

  74. Zumarust's avatar Zumarust said, on April 28, 2011 at 8:45 pm

Yeah, it’s kind of hard to get excited about a Niner draft pick that won’t make an immediate impact

  75. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on April 28, 2011 at 8:48 pm

Sorry Snarkk, I disagree . . . Smith has been screwed over by 49ers management since he arrived here. I just cut and pasted the following from an SF Gate article that in a nutshell summarizes Alex’s situation in Niner land

“The 49ers’ missing puzzle piece has long been a coach who could develop a quarterback. Mike Nolan all but ruined 2005 No. 1 overall pick Alex Smith with annual changes at offensive coordinator. Mike Singletary did the same thing to Smith the past two years.”

Maybe Harbaugh and this coaching staff can salvage Alex Smith.

Blade, I’m tired of the dude. You’re telling me that after six years, there’s nobody available in the entire United States that can help the Niners win games at QB more than Alex fuckin Smith? I don’t believe it. The first interception Alex throws at the Stick he’ll be booed into oblivion. We don’t need that again. Get somebody else as a bridge QB, and let Alex go to wherever and peddle his happy feet there…

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado said, on April 28, 2011 at 9:00 pm

No, I didn’t say that . . . But why waste a 1st round pick on a QB that you will have to develop anyway. Shit, Brady and Montana were taken in the 6th round I believe. Why this fixation on getting a QB in the early rounds. Book this . . . Panthers are idiots for taking Cam Newton number 1 and will regret it down the road.

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on April 28, 2011 at 9:03 pm

I agree with you on Newton. He’s a wasted pick at that spot. But, I could easily have been down with Locker for the Niners. I think he’s going to be pretty good. Like I said, Harbaugh must have a QB scenario well in hand already. He’d better…

      • Unca Chuck's avatar Unca Chuck said, on April 28, 2011 at 10:34 pm

The thing about Smith is good, bad, or indifferent, he’s never put 2 games together in his entire career. Yes, his coaching sucked. Yes, he had few weapons when he got here, yes, the coaching staff sabotaged his success by dumbing down the offense to John Robinson levels.

But still and all, you have plays like the Philly game where he should take a sack, but he gets cute, and fumbles the ball away for a TD the other way. Or on the opening drive he tries to throw a screen to Gore that’s high and wide, and it gets picked. He tries to throw a screen late to Gore, but the DB tips it away. He’s still too panicky. If he had waited ½ a sec, the lane would have cleared. Gore had 40 yards of clear field in front of him. Next play? Int. Game over. Close but no cigar. Yes, he did well vs NO and Atl. Yes they were let down by the D. The problem is, he plays like he did vs KC or Seattle. Granted, that falls on the coaches, but he’s never risen above adversity to win a game. At least not since 2006.

There should be SOME sign of progress.

Fuck it. It’s the goddamn fron office that should be shit-canned. Paraage and his magic spreadsheet need to hit the highway. He was the one to teach Nolan how to properly use the red flag. Uh, not very good when he challenged a FG. Nolan NEVER could figure out the stupid thing. Or the Lance Brggs case that cost the team a draft choice. Or the latest escapade with Harbaugh talking to Smith, which was met with a fine. The front office is supposed to KNOW these things.

The biggest joke regarding this front office was the ‘search’ for a GM, which was a total sham when Baalke was hired. Reported by Mike Lombardi 8 days before it happened.

Blade, Balmer got the same shit said about him. Balmer was going to be great. Quick off the line, smart, fast, blah blah blah.

Aldon Smith is a sophomore coming out. He’s 20. He needs two years to fill out his frame, for God’s sake. They might as well have taken Cam Jordan. If they wanted to take a risk, go with Nick Fairley.

Smith projects out to be a 3rd down specialist. Isn’t 7 a little high for that? I mean unless he turns into Fred Dean, and I mean 4-6 years of steady 10-14 sack seasons, I don’t see the payoff.
