An Offensive Offense That Redefines Impotent
At Bagg’s blog he raises the obvious question about a lack of offensive identity. And you can see what he means– we’ve got no go-to guy (with Posey and Panda out). We’ve got no speed. We’ve got no power. Who are we? How did we get here?
The ’95 Rockies had the Blake Street Bombers. The ’27 Yankees had Murderers’ Row. I humbly submit the 2011 SF Giants indentity: “The Golden Gate Geezers”….
I don’t need to wait till June 1 to say it: Pat Burrell and Miguel Tejada are DONE. Finished. Careers are OVER. I don’t mind Pat the Bat coming off the bench and swinging for the fences late in a game. Hell, he’s doing that right now anyway and he might run into one every now and again–but watching him fail miserably from the clean up spot on almost every at bat has me doing a slow burn. And Tejada? Ugh, let him play third base till Panda gets back but this guy is less than worthless right now…..
And Rowand at lead off is another thing to nix immediately. Just leave Torres out there against lefties. He can find a way on base and do what he normally does, “make things happen”. A team with no offensive identity can’t have the least likely leadoff man in baseball leading off. Oh wait, maybe that’s another example of how we have no offensive identity….
Over the last 3 games, the Giants have been shutout, then a random call up accounts for 4 of their 5 runs scored, then an error allows them to score their grand total of two yesterday. Pathetic. And sure you can argue that losing a ‘Posey’ will give your team a hangover but that’s not what’s happening. This is who they are. Pretty much every guy who comes to the plate feels like the same guy…..
Sit Pat the No-Bat, Play Burriss somewhere every day and put Rowand on Zito Detail with Torres taking all the starts in CF. I’ve got no idea what to do with 3rd base…..
And how about Dirrrrrrty’s luck? He gives up two earned runs and I have a pretty hard time calling those runs “earned”. The first one was the lamest inside the park job I’ve ever seen, Ross absolutely should have had that. And then Whitey throws a ball into CF with Braun ultimately coming into score on a sac fly. Boom, 2 earned runs. Why isn’t Whiteside’s throw an error? I’ve never understood why catchers don’t get errors for crap throws into CF……….
NO Whitey was credited with an E on that crap throw into CF. No help from Burriss, I might add.
I still maintain he needs to block that ball somehow. Not avoid it like it was an ICBM shot from Bin Laden’s watery-dead ass.
Chuckling about what our team “nickname” should be and did a google search . . . I couldn’t find one for MLB baseball teams, but these are quite appropriate for NFL teams. So Flappers, your assignment today, is to anoint an appropriate nickname for our current Giants team, reflecting their outstanding offensive output of late.

Chicago Teddy Bears. I loved that show from the early ’70’s. Got cancelled after about 5 weeks. Kind of a pre-curser to Johnny Dangerously. Included in the cast, John “Sgt. Schultz” Banner
I kinda like the Kansas City Chefs . . . disparaging on a few levels.
Substitute Eaglets for Iggles, which is actually a term of endearment by Philthy phans, much like Jints for Giants. As for Tennessee: Titanics?
Mac, I think it’s even more insulting that the Tennessee Titans don’t even rate a nickname . . . The “???” is much more insulting, don’t you think?
Tennessee Tight Asses?
Yes. I too regretted that the moment I hit Post Comment
I don’t ? the LU…over the course of the next couple weeks with zero off days, everyone is going to need a rest at some point. torres has struggled vs. LHP, so one day off is OK. Ross and Nate (with an occasional dose of rowand/burrell), a start for Belt somewhere, mix and match on the left side, it is what it is.
bochy is not going to just sit his vets, like Huff, at least until Panda is back and healthy. I’m all for giving the young guys a start here and there, but as they are quickly finding out, the game at this level is pretty hard and different from what they have seen at any level in minors. There are going to be considerable ups and downs, and enough “downs” might push Sabes to make a deal.
But this is the ID of the team, same old same old…great pitching, good D (which didn’t happen yesterday) and timely hitting (not enough of that either).
I still say the road trip is good for the team, and bet they come out ahead by the end of it.
This is the EXACT lineup that I “scribbled” down last night. Bochy must be a closet Flap reader.
CF Torres
3B Burriss
2B Sanchez
1B Huff
RF Schierholtz
LF Belt
SS Crawford
C Stewart
P Cain
Wow
Well Dennis, this is one time you can’t really bitch about the lineup.
that’s insane, you had Burriss at 3rd? Well done Denny. That’s like my 6-0 call of about 4 years ago, A’s over the Giants…..
well, looks like Burriss solves your 3B question for today. Along with Stewart, Crawford, Belt playing and Huff batting cleanup. A ‘minor’ offensive arrangement.
I do see great things for belt, someone should interview him on his bigFlavorite position, maybe AmyG?
Go Gigantes!
nice take on the hitting situation. without an upside, of which there is little, tejada, burrell, rowand have no place as regulars.
Completely agree about Torres. I don’t care that he’s 0-for-whatever vs. lefties, with no Buster and Pablo he has to be in the lineup every day. Even as a pinch-hitter yesterday, he started what constituted as the only rally. Some here have suggested Burriss for 3B. If that’s at all possible, then go for that, too, since I’ve already seen about five seasons’ worth of stupefyingly bad ABs from Tejada. But all this is hardly a cure. Until Pablo comes back, games like the last three are probably what we’re gonna have to deal with most of the time.
Burriss is at 3rd? Has Burriss ever even played 3rd before? I don’t think he has……
WillieD–I’d argue against it when you said “this is the ID of the team, same old same old”—last year we had the “clutch guys”–“The Uribe’s”. In fact, Uribe made a HUGE difference and his absence has not been filled. Posey is gone. Pablo is gone. Burrell is done. Huff is nothing like last year.
In 2010, Huff, Burrell, Posey, Uribe, Torres….these were the guys who BROUGHT it. Their stud clutchness was how we won games.
This year? NOT the same old same old….
so the only thing missing so far, really, is the “timely hitting” part of what I said. Pitching and D are what makes the giants go, nothing new. Getting guys hot at the end of the season pushed the offense up to middle of the pack.
Everyone expected the O to be no worse, given rebound of Panda (which was going great til he got hurt), full season of Posey (not happening) and Ross (also didn’t happen). Uribe isn’t even replacing Uribe with clutch numbers of last year, which as we all know were not near as good as season before.
I still think the time to have gotten the Giants was up to now: torres (best player) hurt, along with post season hero Ross, best hitter early (Panda), and slumps from burrell huff, less than expected from tejada, and all the games on the road. Instead, it hasn’t happened and SF is in front. LA and rox, after great early season starts, have petered out into the ordinary.
Some sticks get rolling, pitching stays solid along with the D, SF is still very formidable group to deal with, esp in short series…as they proved last year.
Last year was last year, but one thing to note: One year ago the Giants were struggling, grasping at straws and would have stood speechless with mouths agape if someone had suggested they would be World Champs. Though Bochy can be maddeningly slow at making changes, things do have an eventual tendency to work out under his regime.
Dennis, have you been attending precognition school lately? If its something you’ve been smoking, better identify it for the rest of us. Or do we really want to know that way? It’s not exactly the kinda lineup i suggested last night on Baggs’ blog, but fairly close. It might just work. There’s a measure of speed with Torres and Burress. Plenty of hunger with the kidz. Some veteran presence with Sanchez, Huff and Torres. In any event its not merely same old, same old. We know that shit doesn’t work and isn’t gonna.
Tejada is ready for the fork test and probably should be released on Panda’s return. As Flav and several others have pointed out, Pat the Bat has some retention value as million dollar a year late inning pinch hitter and little else. Huff still needs to be dropped deeper into the L.U., but i imagine Bochy would be embarrassed to bat one of his no-names in cleanup, even though the chances of success would probably be at least equal.
As i noted yesterday even a 3-4 record on this road trek would be considered a major success. Victory today would virtually assure nothing less than that, possibly even a winner. A winning road trip in the Giants current state of dismemberment would be akin to taking down a charging rhino with #6 birdshot.
Tejada is the only 3rd baseman on the roster ( other than Huff). so I guess Burriss is the only way to give Tejada a day off. Manny has never played there at any level…
I have no idea what a “random call up” is, Crawford is thought by many to be their SS of the future… as far as the future for Tejada, Burrell, Rowand- Rowand still has some value, as he’s a very good defender ( and there’s that contract). I’d hope that Burrell goes when Ford is back. Except for a rehab assigment, I see no way Ford goes down now. Tejada’s future depends on Crawford-if Crawford hits at all, Tejada either sits or they move him somehow, even might DFA. No one thought he’d be this bad- absolutely no one. But give me the rap- I’m a big boy, I can take it. Huff is another matter. I said he’d have a down year based on his history, but he’s hitting like fucking Bowker. Just two months into his 22 million, they aren’t bailing on him- he HAS to hit.
It wouldn’t hurt the Doomin’ Crew to remember that it’s the Brewers who lucked into a win or this is a 2-0 road trip so far. Brewers had won nine in a row at home coming in… you might also remenmber that it was always going to be about the pitching, anyway- so chill out. An do not talk DBacks-they have exactly zero chance- this is still, as Mikey has told you- SF wins the West again..
What happened to the “they’ll cruise by at least 10 games” part? And pray tell how the Brewers “lucked” into yesterday’s win? We committed 2 errors (1 officially), had a grand total of 7 base runners, did not score our only two runs until the 8th inning and got out-managed in the 9th being on the wrong end of the suicide squeeze. The Brewers were lucky? I’ve learned new meanings to the words, “unusual” and “lucky” from you in the past few days. You’re a regular Noah Webster.
Obviously the injuries impact the margin, Dooomin’ Denny.
What’s your call? Your comments can only mean last place so spit it out. Or are you going to pull a Sobber?
The squeeze was pure luck: a .328 hitter who had never successfully bunted in the major leagues.
Schulman reports that Panda could start ML rehab next weekend and be back by the end of the next homestand. You Web Doctors stay out of it…
Baggs rarely says much of interest, imo. He spends an inordinate amount of space grinding his own personal axe, and disregards the rest except for a sentence or two. How much space in yesterday’s blog does he spend on the great game Sanchez pitched, which was pretty important part of what went on.
And the bloggers…one guy wants them to DFA Huff, another wants to add Tejada (suprise) and burrell at the same time, another wants to not play anyone over 30. Why not just bring up all of San Jose and try and win at mlb level? Another guy wrote in cap letters after Posey got hurt about how he should never have been C at all. Hard to stomach, really.
Was that last guy “Snarkk”?
BTW, Whiteside properly received the error on the poor throw. Everyone knows Burriss didn’t make a good effort, but neither Kuiper nor the scorekeeper assigned most of the blame to Manny. Only the Snarkker did that..
No. Snarkk’s posts are pretty well reasoned, as opposed to majority of what you get from bagg bloggers.
Remember the commercials about the brand of potato chips with the mexican bandits?
“Provacative.”
“well seasoned.”
He’s posted there, I’m not going to characterize his posts. I’m sure he’s a fine family man.
“pretty well”. I guess that’s a compliment, sorta, I suppose. There are some loose cannon posts on Baggs’ blog, but there are some that are well reasoned, also. “Provocative and well seasoned”, I like that. And, describes some of those Brussells Sprouts recipes the other day…
I don’t post on the Splish except on very rare occasion. Apparently you do for jolly jousts with the trolls and dbags…
Go back to the tape. Kuiper called out Burriss for having to stop the bad throw, but didn’t. He went out of his way to make that point. Burriss doesn’t get the error, true, and should not. But, he blew his role to not make it worse. He got outta the way of the damn bounce, like a little leaguer afraid of the ball. This is the big leagues. It’s not a proportionate liability deal, this isn’t a tort situation, it’s beisbol…
I would like to see what Torres could do batting third (3rd). He looks bigger than ever, and might have 20 homerun power once he gets his stroke going. Who needs him setting the table for no one. As a leadoff hitter they might as well play “For No One” (Beatles) as his walk-up song.
Willie: The Baggs Blog is a mixed bag, to mangle the metaphors. Though it does not become as weirded out as the Splash, like you note there are some pretty benighted fans in the mix. At the same time, though, there are guys who post some pretty insightful messages. Baggarly does have a bit much of a personal agenda, but all in all is more of a baseball man than Schulman. i give them a B- overall and do hang out there on a very irregular basis. It’s good for their regulars to get a bit of Flap in their doodles.
Baggs commenters are far worse than the Splash ones. Schulman is an excellent beat writer- that IS both of their jobs. The job is to report on the game, not enter subjective commentary. Baggs obviously wants to a columnist, not a beat writer.
Nice to see you back here, Magnus, imparting your identity and imprint after a well-deserved detachment. (And lots of good comments above.)
“Identity” is a good word, per Baggs, to use in discussing our offense. I fully agree we do not have one. But I have cautious confidence that an identity will emerge, a new, redefined, albeit energetic identity. I think of it like this: an alkie or an addict needs to hit bottom — some sort of bottom — before any chance of recovery. From this bottom, this year’s success brew (wrong word, given reference to alcoholism and our current nemesis, the Brewers?) will evolve. Giants management has been typically cautious over the years in reinventions of the team, allowing for the bottom to be hit. But they do adjust and recalibrate. Admittedly, this may be too generous a take — but as a stubborn citizen of Baskingville, I’ll partake of such generosity. I’m all for a faster, younger team — even if that means some more learning mistakes. Let ‘er rip.
I partially disagree with your comment yesterday, Twin, that Sabean is looking for a catcher, but merely not begging or dealing with weakness (my words, not yours). I agree they’d go for an upgrade, but I think Sabes has a point: not that much out there — and at what price? Call me naive, but I feel the Giants really are giving Whitey an honest shot at it. And I’m thinking, he may surprise some — on the positive side. (I said that about Rowand over the winter; I was right for, what, 5 weeks?) If Whitey excels, Dennis MUST revert to YES Whitey.
Whitey is no Torres, who did have some minor league success. Eli has never hit at any level.
Anyway,as I said, Sabean is hardly going to say he’s looking for a catcher, he has to show support for the guys here now.
And, unlike the situation with Tejada and others, a decent hitting catcher can be had for a song. Some even know how to “call a good game”..
I was shocked to discover how good Milwaukee is at home.
I was surprised, as well: 20-7 — though (thankfully) their road record is nearly the exact opposite.
Ishi in RF for Grizzlies today.
He’s played there a lot ( 15 in RF, 14 in LF) . Before Belt came back, they had 4 first basemen there.
BF, nice Talking Heads reference in your post. That wasn’t missed by me.
—-
Traditionally, catcher only ever gets an error on a bad throw if the runner gets the extra base.
—-
Burris made a horrible play on that ball. He jumped out of the way of that ball, which is inexcusable, especially considering we have catchers taking hits from baserunners.
—-
TF, I was a big supporter of the Tejada acquistion, also. I thought we’d at least get a few HRs from the guy.
Ugh. Have any of these singles been hit hard?
Burriss did make a poor effort, but the throw was also terrible. The error will always go to the catcher there, as it properly did.
Errors are not assigned for failing to rescue a shit throw.
I’m getting the feeling this just ain’t our day. Come to think of it, the past 5 or 6 Sundays have all sucked. For the team, and me personally. Maybe I should think about going back to church.
“TF, I was a big supporter of the Tejada acquistion, also. I thought we’d at least get a few HRs from the guy.” Between the injuries and the shitty hitting of Huff, Tejada, Ross, and Rowand, I wonder if anyone would be declaring Burrell’s career over if the rest of the team was healthy or the other under performers had, say, a collective 737 OPS.
James, are you Burrell’s neighbor, brother or the best man at his wedding? The Bat is broken. Shattered if you will.
Burrell is the kind of high K, low BA player who over his career has had more than a couple of lousy stretches like his 58 PAs in May. His OPS was 816 at the end of April, when he played regularly.
Because of his age, there’s a good chance he is in fact DONE as a ML hitter. But the 58 PAs in May do not prove that he’s broken. And it is ridiculous to lump him with Tejada.
Walking is not what you want out of a middle of the order hitter. A walk is NOT as good as a hit. Burrell’s slugging perecentage is more important than his OBP. At .397 it’s the worst of his NL careeer. And Pat’s OBP is less valuable than that of guy with same OBP who can run. As I said at the beginning of the year, they got the best they’ll get from him. That he took an insulting 1 million says it all- this was his only option. Time to say thanks for 2010 and sayonara..
Last year Cain was money w/RISP and two outs. We need to turn back the calendar.
The city of Milwaukee’s World Series championship drought is 54 years. 1957. They beat the Yankees in that Series. Of course that Milwaukee team was the Braves, who later won a Series in ’95 in Atlanta.
That poor rookie was about to win the Indy 500 until…he hit the wall coming out of turn 4 on the final lap.
I foresee alcohol and drug addiction in his near future.
BF, I put Burriss at third yesterday just before Dennis. 🙂
They’ve been giving him practice reps over there, trying to channel a healthy DeRosa. It might not take, but with Tejada cratering, I don’t blame them at all for getting creative. They have real problems with Tejada. Bad D, horrible O with no pop, no OBP. I admit I thought he would be OK and serviceable for a year, but he’s turned into the opposition’s best friend…
Tejada ranks above only Huff in WAR on the team, but he’s actually played a very good third base by any measure- FP, range factor, UZR. He’s been bad enough for real without inventing stuff.
No invention, he’s been bad all over. You must be the only one who sees a rainbow…
No one but you claims he’s played poorly at third. And you can’t support it, as usual. I only corrected a factual error, but pointed out his terrible play.
Well, it is a bummer to be hitting the ball harder than they are and be down 3. Maybe good things to come.
Jesus H. Christ. Those last two balls were well struck. Nothing to show for it. We’ve had TWO base runners thru five. We’re not even gonna match yesterday’s abysmal total. We’re almost a third into the season. This is who we are. This team needs help, outside help. This offense will not get fixed internally. NO Whitey chance in hell.
What does the “H” stand for?…
I was brought up under the assumption that the ‘H’ stood for “Holy.” But I’ve heard many other examples including “Harold” (mispronunciation of “hallowed”) and “Haploid.”
But there’s no denying…Jesus H. Christ does our offense suck.
Except for the back-to-back singles by Braun and Fielder it’s all been ground-ball hits and dinkers. And there’s another one by Weeks.
Horatio
I thought Hornblower cornered that one….
I would not be surprised if Cain does not look hard at other teams when his FA year comes up. He’s signed through next year. He’s got a ring, so why not look for teams that actually can score runs for him, and are closer to home? If I were St. Louis or Atlanta, I’d go after him. Reds? Probably not, park is too live for his high ball pitching…
Baggs wrote about how we’re seeing the “bad” side of Ross these days, but that’s true of several of the players. We’re seeing why the Giants were able to get some of these guys so easily last year. They all did amazing stuff for the team last season, but they’re showing the “bad” side at the same time now.
I’m a little surprised at how good Ross’ arm is. He’s showed it well, strong and accurate…
Well, 5-0 to me means game over.
CU guys…
I have to admit I’d already flicked the channel. I’m watching Obama’s speech at Joplin.
I haven’t seen anything like this since the Anita Bryant concert.
“You’d better tell the Captain we’ve got to land as soon as we can. This woman has to be gotten to a hospital. (Elaine: ‘A hospital? What is it?’) It’s a big building with patients, but that’s not important right now.”
Whole team had the fish today.
Whose bright idea was it to start Burriss at 3B? 😀
Tomorrow will see Miggy back at third. One of the few stupid decisions by Bochy. As Doomin’ Denny said, he must have read the Flap.
Affeldt has become the designated drudge of the P.S. Can’t say he hasn’t earned that situation.
Speaking of earning, right now Vogelsong and Dirty are the 2 an d 3 on merit. Cain and MadBum are 4-5
hmm… so many options: watch the 9th or alphabetize the pantry’s pasta shapes? Organization will set you free!
Didn’t know about Casilla’s return till his pic was up on the board. Nice to see him produce a relatively clean inning. Should he be back with reasonable reliability, it will mean the last 3 innings are covered by five better than average relievers. That will become more and more important over the grind of the season.
You to admit that it’s pretty fucking funny that Bochy went vwith Doomin’ Denny’s LU ..
Filed under, “Be careful what you ask for…”
I should stick to just to bashing Bochy’s works of art. Last thing they need is for me to paint ’em another “pretty” picture. The only pretty I see is that we pretty much suck up at the plate. We’ll have to ask Pawlie if they’ve hit rock bottom yet. Something tells me we’re about to do our best impersonation of Ed Harris in “The Abyss.”
Estes is a hoot- presents himself as a real gamer, hard line on everything- yet he was as soft as they get- practicallty defined “head case”..
The bad news: a somewhat dispiriting loss, and I am still in hate with scrub douche Cousins.
The good news: my kid wanted to listen to the game right through the final out (“They might hit TWO grand slams this inning!”), didn’t mope then the last out was made, and wants to go outside to play catch now.
I just love that story. Lifts me up. In the NYC area, we always said “have a catch.” “Field of Dreams” got that right when that expression was used, near the end. Incidentally, the movie is based on a fine novel, “Shoeless Joe,” by W.P. Kinsella. A friend of mine was living in Calgary (now lives on Cayman Brac, where I went in Feb.) in the 1980s, and she recommended it because she knew the author or someone who knew him. This was at least a few years before the movie. Yeah, it’s corny. But I think it works if you go with the corniness.
Sounds like your kid has it together, Sierra. ..
Looks like AZ will take over first and dark clouds will gather as cries of dismay echo throughout…
” It’s over. All is lost.”
Ladies and gentlemen, your first place Arizona Diamondbacks. 1st place on Memorial Day. 1st place on the Fourth of July. 1st place on Labor Day. The Snakes are this years 2010 Friars. You think they’ll go away and “revert to form,” but they won’t. They’ve got some good young talent on offense, and their pitching is better than advertised.
Our team needs help. Now we have to go play four with the 1st place Cards who’ll likely have Holliday back in their lineup. We need some new blood. An infusion of some new talent. I’m thinking both Reyes (4/5 today now up to .335) and Beltran from the Mets. Have our friend Loo get to work on the trade details. I’m thinking he’ll start with Cain and Belt…
You’re a bandwagon jumping fool . Go post on the Snake’s blog. Regardless of the margin, who told you in April last year that the Giants would win the division? In May? June? July? August? September? Twinfan..who doomed it in April? May? June? July? August? September? Doomin’ Denny. Who then forgot all of his idiot predictions of doom and jumped on the World Series Champ wagon. Doomin’ Denny.
“1st place on the Fourth of July. 1st place on Labor Day.” Time to put up or shut up. $100 for each date. You have AZ, I have SF. Paypal.
The Bums have 8 runs on 15 hits all off Ricky Nolasco just thru the first five innings? Didn’t Nolasco just shut us down the other week? What am I saying? Everyone shuts us down.
S.O.S.
San Francisco’s Offense Sucks
That’s typically faulty thinking, Doomin’ Denny. How about that wager? Surely you have a couple hundred bucks.
How many times have I stated that I NEVER bet against my team? Believe it or not, I do have some morals. Not many, just the important ones.
The Snakes? Come on. At least last year San Diego had some legit pitching. They’ve played real well for a dozen games, every team in the league does that at some pt in th season. They aren’t that good (like all the NL teams, they all have holes). Sabean needs to make a trade to fix the O but it isn’t Reyes. You think that .335 ba ave is going up or down? Besides they don’t need guys getting on base as much as they need a stick or two to drive them in. I’m praying those two sticks are panda and belt….
However, when the 49ers resign A*** S**** (I’ve sworn off uttering or even typing his name), I will be excepting any and all wagers that they will not have a winning record with #11 at the helm. And I’m not just talking money. That’s boring. I’m taking all types of wagers. Loser has to stop blogging on all our favorite sites. Loser has to cut off their thumb (the one on their dominant hand). Loser has to go on a blind date with one of Chuckles goats. You name it. The 49ers will not win with that pussy POS of a quarterback again under center. I hope you at least can come up with some new excuses. I’ve heard all the countless others. It shouldn’t be too hard, you’ve been leading the charge of “A***cuses” since day one. Name your wager. Name your price.
There’s no bet there. I’ve already won the Alex Smith bets six times, puddinghead.
Nope, if you’re too chicken shit to back up your Giants’ dooming, we have no wager.
You’ve already won the bet six times? You are droll. Droll. Droll. Droll. Listen, I know what you’ve been doing. You’ve taken the contrary stand against all the “A*** Haters” to stir the pot and make the blogs lively. Mission accomplished and very well played. IF, however, you truly believe in your heart of hearts that A*** S**** is a winner, well, I’d take pity on you, but that’s one of the many compassions I’ve since lost a long time ago. I’d just assume sit on my couch and watch you clean the piss-soaked troughs of Room B for thinking A*** S**** will ever amount to anything more but a huge pile of horseshit.
I’ll post this again.BP is not infallible, but I ‘ll take ’em over Doomin’ Denny. This is the projection *after* Posey’s injury:
SF 89-73
Col 84-78
LA 82-80
AZ 79-83
SD 74-88
Tough game to watch today. Burris hasn’t impressed me at all. He’s clearly out of position anywhere but 2b. He’s really the least of the problem though. The offense is just missing…everything. Hard to imagine it being any worse so it has to get better. Sandoval coming back will be huge. Not because he’ll bat 1.000 but because he’ll bring some energy to the club. Problem is what happens in the meantime.
Flav, I’m not saying that Zona is “all that.” But it sure the hell seems like they have the “it factor” this year. Gibson and his players have a very nice simpatico relationship going on. Are they the most talented? Not even close. But as we know, the best team doesn’t always win.
Gibson is half a brain short of a Gibbon. First place on Labor Day? Right…That’s why you won’t bet.
Somewhere between LQTM and LOL re Gibson.
Like I said, I will not be betting (hence rooting) for Arizona to be in 1st place come Labor Day. But I see you threw out the BP projection of 79-83 for the Snakes. You stand by that? I’ll take the OVER. We have a bet?
I propose and approve the bets. I understand that you want to weasel out, that’s what doomers do.
BTW, I know you just brought Smith into this thinking it would piss me off. Again, poor thinking. Knowing that he’s coming back and knowing how it infuriates you poor fuckers is extremely entertaining.
See, that’s were you’re wrong. Knowing that the Niners will bring back S**** has well surpassed the state of infuriating me. The 49ers have done the unthinkable to a lifelong and rabid fan — they’ve made me apathetic. I truly no longer care. I’ve literally given my heart and soul to that team, and if that’s the way they’re gonna repay me by bringing back the “A*** S**** Experiment” for year number seven, well, they can do it without me. I’m not mad, I don’t care. Shame on them. For shame.
Even better…you’ve given up.
NO Whitey, you’re wrong again. The Niners have given up by bringing back A*** S****.
I’m just following suit.
Baggs intimates that once Pablo returns, Tejada will likely be relegated to a bench role if not shown the door. Thank Christ. I hate to say I told you so, but I knew signing him was a huge mistake. He’s a 37-year-old (if you believe his phony- baloney birth certificate) who is no longer a consumer of juice. And I don’t mean Minute Maid, Tropicana or Florida’s Natural. He offers absolutely nothing on the field or at the plate. He lucked out with Panda’s injury moving him over to third. If he’d remain at SS the entire time, the shit would really have hit the fan.
I am tense and worried in reading the reports about Buster’s surgery. I know it was “technically” successful, but the tone of the comments is cautious, sedate, muted, qualified. Potentially troublesome, that’s my take. Maybe it is just prudent and smart to hedge and to not promise too much, but Groeschner’s remarks do not encourage me.
I think the injury is potentially career threatening (see DeRosa tendon issues) and the FO is being cautious with all information coming out. The hedging and qualifications with the answers, especially about being ready opening day ’12, don’t give me any warm and fuzzies.

Looks like four good ones to me. I’ll be watching and hoping for the best. I’d like to see Belt, Burriss and Crawford get a bunch of starts, but we’ll have to see what the skipper has to say about that. I’d like to see Burriss at 2B, however. I know the Fruckster just reached a small milestone, but he could use a break. Actually, I’d like to see Belt at 1B and sit down Huff Daddy for a few. Again, at Bochy’s discretion. I don’t think he’s in the mood to copy down another of my “scribble” job lineups any time soon. Maybe I could persuade him with some finger painting…
Dennis didn’t really say much about the Tejada signing that I saw. Said he was old, would hit into a lot of DPs. Maybe said something later but that was it during the first three days after the signing. It’s fair to say Doomin’ Denny wasn’t thrilled but I didn’t see anything to warrant ” I told you so”.
Are you kidding me? I yelled at you about Tejada (among many other things) the day I called you after your surgery. I’m not an “I told you so” kind of guy, but Jesus Holy Christ (that’s for Snarkk), I told you so about Tejada. I’m on the record countless times (you can look it up) saying “we need a goddamn shortstop” before the season began. And as much as I wish for Crawford to eventually blossom into one, I’ll say it again; WE NEED A GODDAMN SHORTSTOP!
I said you might have said something later. Who was the SS you wanted?
On the brighter side, the Giants and D-Backs are tied in the loss column, so that’s something.
And the Rockies lost today.
Dennis, you should have watched the memorial service for Joplin today. It’s good to keep things in perspective. Really.
I thought Janis Joplin died many years ago. Same goes for Scott Joplin. I felt “The Sting” of his death many moons ago.
What bet did Twin win 6 timers?
As I recall I was the one who warned us all of the Tejada-done thing…..
and I used actual numbers….
but fuck the numbers, right? Ok, I have a bbq to serve. Rock on…….
Looking at the comments from November 30, when Tejada was signed…I was enthusiastic and thought he would hit 20-25 HRs here, Flavor said it was a “great pick up”, most were ambivalent. No one was loudly against it. Some had given up on Panda and wanted Tejada plus another SS. The other suspects have been marginally better than Tejada at best ( exception is Theriot).Crawford could hit like shit and be the best of the lot…
Craig, you said he was a “great pick up”. All you said negatively was that he’d never hit for the power I predicted. You nailed that one.
The bet I won 6 times has nothing to do with this- Denny tried to drag Alex Smith into the thread, I was just helping Denny be even more miserable.
Make me more miserable? I’m already at 99.998% capacity. If you can squeeze out that last .002, Debbie Downer is looking for a date.
Hey, sounds like Flav is cooking up a little BBQ. What’s everybody else doing Memorial Day? I’m cooking up some chicken for some of the guys in my little community. Nothing much. Some BBQ’d chicken quarters, rice, sweet kernel corn and some rolls. And I need not mention the Met Mile at Belmont on TVG.
Thank you and God bless all the men and women who’ve helped made this country what it is.
I’m deeply thankful. Happy Memorial Day.
Is Yogi bringing his BBQ Tofurky again this year?
“Thank you and God bless all the men and women who’ve helped made this country what it is.”
I’m sure Dubya and Laura appreciate that.
Red Skelton used to always end his show with “Thank you, and God bless.”
Or maybe it was “Good night, and God bless.”
Would you believe if I told you I had each of those two autographs? Never mind. I just got a text from Bill O’Reilly. There’s a party at Palin’s house. Looks like I’m bringing the beer. And remember, “the spin stops here because I’m looking out for you.”
We just went flank steak tonight. Corn. Zuchini. No clue how to spell that……
I DID like the Tejada signing at the time. I especially liked the 1 year deal. And then my Shandler Baseball Prospectus Book got delivered and I puked a little in my mouth. I blogged before I studied his underlying numbers, it happens. But I was absolutely clear that his power was done and that HE would be done if he tried to swing for the fences all day long. Save your career with doubles in the gap. Problem was, he can’t hit those anymore either. It really has been a fall from grace that no one saw coming. All his hits are pretty much ground balls and/or bloopy bullshit—kinda reminds me of when if was over for Aurilia–I don’t think he came within 40 feet of the warning track for like the last month of his career……
Missed the Indy & Nascar, too busy watching the greatest racing event: Monaco F1 Grand Prix.
Same as your two, though, great race until the last 4 laps with Redbull, Ferrari and Mclaren nose to tail when some rookie got airborn and made the finish an after thought.
OMFG! Junior was about to break his 100+ winless streak and he ran outta gas on turn 4 on the final, and 400th lap in the Coco-Cola 600. And earlier today that rookie kissed the wall on turn four on the final lap of the Indy 500.
Sounds like to me they both coulda used a closer. Where’s B-Wheezy when ya need’em?
Rough weekend for SFG for sure. Only thing getting me through it is watching “Raging Fred” every couple of hours. The Bert and Ernie Casino one kills me too. Thanks for that, Zum.
I’m watching the kids bounce on the trampoline in near darkness as their dinner gets cold. No complaints—- good to see ’em out in the yard.
I’m dropping them off at ex wife #1’s house in the late am and then off to the course for 18 with an old friend. Homemade Philly cheese steaks to follow. The Ribeye is thawing as I type.
I got no love for my Brandon Crawford = Andre Ethier post yesterday.
Does Chris Stewart = Tino Martinez do anything for anyone?
I need more San Dawg in my life……..
