Dusting the Snakes and A Big Start for Lincecum

Posted in Uncategorized by Flavor on June 17, 2011

I don’t know why, but I’ve always thought of winning a series as “dusting” a team. It’s kinda *sweep* related and it sounds like a fairly disrespectful thing to do to someone. Anyway, that’s how my tortured mind works……By the way, the Snakes are clearly significantly worse than we are. Despite how boring and uninspiring our offense is, there just isn’t a team in the NL West that even remotely scares me……..

Timmy needs to get it going tonight against someone named “Godfrey”. His velocity has been fine, but his location has been crap. I wonder if we’ll see Stewart catch him tonight? I know Whitey got a hit this week, but it’s possible that Tim is just a little out of whack with El President catching. It’s possible and it probably doesn’t take much of a jolt to disrupt that complicated delivery. Anyway, Lincecum is the #5 right now so I’m gonna cut him some slack if he doesn’t do well tonight πŸ™‚ ……

It’s possible that Fontenot is going to replace Burriss when he comes off the DL. That would be disappointing but not totally surprising. Burriss has not taken advantage of his opportunities to play. He might bring more to the team with his skills but Bochy will want a guy who isn’t going to make mistakes as often and that’s Fontenot. Β And we will likely get an upcoming opportunity to see what Bill Hall is going to bring to the table. If it’s an occasional bomb that might be enough to get him a lot of playing time at second base……..

Yeah, you have to think Stewart gets the nod. Whitehead has been mediocre at best, and throw in the lousy defense, and 6-27 (22%) in CS is crap.

“….pablo ross burrell torres in OPS.” It wasn’t that way last season, tho, when he was 6-WAR player. His slugging is down over 80 points, and it just seems like he is not trying to steal as many bases. It doesn’t seem like it’s physical, because even when bochy doesn’t start him he gets him in there, and he made a great running grab last night. But it’s hard to see a reason given the talent he has that he wouldn’t be in the LU 4 days out of 6.
Bottom line, with SF struggling to score runs, healthy Torres is a must. You are only going to get so much out of Nate rowand burrell. I have less issue with the other guys such as crawford burriss tejada and whitey, because I don’t expect near as much out of them as I do torres, who was super last year. If something is bothering him, either mental or physical, that’s unfortunate.

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on June 17, 2011 at 9:59 am

I wasn’t disputing that Torres’ numbers are down, just Loo-weinie’s ragging on him all the time.Even with his current numbers, he remains:
      1. An above average lead off hitter both by OBP and OPS
      2. The ONLY lead off hitter on this team

Someone can point out how they struggle against this type, but facing Godfrey and Moscoso certainly preferable to Andersen and Gonzales. Expect at least 2 of 3.

I don’t double-post here and on the splash much. TF occassionally doubles up some of his zingers or his more trenchant baseball insights, and that works fine. But the two blogs are very different. Nonetheless, when you have a good idea, share it — right?

Will the Giants wear their orange-Friday jerseys and orange and black cleats tonight? Hope so. I would also like them to hire a Brad Pitt look-alike for the series, dress him in bizness cazh, and have him sit behind the A’s dugout and shout insults at the players as they return to the bench after striking out or allowing 3 or 4 ERs.

Zito pitched for Fresno against Tackytown last night and gave up four runs, one HR, in 6 innings. Compare that AAA performance against Vogelsong’s half the number in as many innings against a hard-hitting ML team. Something tells me that there is a relapse developing with Zito’s injury.

Sometimes you wonder what’s going through an athlete’s mind…..to the rest of the league, Burriss is basically a nobody, so I was a bit perplexed watching him take the longest make-the-umpire-look-like-a-schmuck jog to firstbase that I’ve ever seen. And then took another one almost as long, as he was striking out, with the broadcasters trying to telepathically warn Burriss before that last pitch- “you better not take anything close on that next pitch.”

    • Unca Chuck's avatar Unca Chuck said, on June 17, 2011 at 12:57 pm

Funny thing was, the 1st thing my son noticed was how quiet that ump was last night. The guy the night before was loud as hell, enough to hear on TV easily. This guy last night? Not a peep. Cue Burriss, and he apparently didn’t hear anything.

But taking the 2nd pitch was moronic.

Not gonna seriously rag on Tim, but I do think he has some growing up to do. I was at the 1,000th strikeout game with my kids and Tim gave up a bomb in the 2nd just before he got his 1K to end the inning, and he was seriously pissed off. When he walked off the field he showed no acknowledgement of the fans who were cheering their hearts out for him, too caught up in himself. The cheers went on and on but Tim just sat on the bench and sulked, no coming out of the dugout to acknowledge the fans.

I get it about his competitiveness and like the fire he shows, but that scene showed me why the guy is unable to make adjustments during a game. He is just not able to step out of himself during the game at all. And that is a weakness. He can make adjustments between starts and I’m sure he will get back to being a top starter soon, but until that guy learns to step back and look around himself at what is going on, he is never going to be able to make any in-game adjustments.

Giants seriously need some power. They can’t consistently “move the line” as Lurie says, so they need to score by parking some over the fences. Where it will come from, that’s a mystery. Cody got one tonite, but they’re seriously power deficient. I don’t know what the game to game comparison is with last year, but I’d guess the squad is fairly far behind last year’s tater count to date. Unfortunately, I don’t see anybody breaking out the HR sticks anytime soon on a consistent basis….

Gyros are 24th in MLB with 45 HRs, a little better than I expected. But, last year at the AS break (88 games) they had 82 HRs, for a 0.93 HR/game average. So far, they’re at 45 HRs over 69 games, or a 0.65 HR/game average clip. That’s a 30% drop in HR production from last year. Not good….

Just checked through May- 39 HR last year 36 this year. Of course they got power later from Pat, Buster, Ross…so they’re well behind. Which wuld be expected with the time lost by Panda, Ross, Torres, Buster…it’ll pick up some but I’m sure they’ll be short. Of course, the pitching is a bit better…

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk said, on June 17, 2011 at 9:34 pm

In other words, the stats I cited are correct. They’re seriously down on year on year power to date. Burrell and Ross weren’t even there before the AS break, which is what I cited. The power drain is hurting run production. They’re still 9 up over .500, so one can argue BFD. But, if they were on similar HR pace now as last year, they’d be even better….

I heartily agree with xoot on Bip. Pretty empty.

It’ll be Mota out, Zito in pretty soon. Zito won’t be of much use in the bullpen, but that’s the way it’ll have to be.

    • Victor Frankenstein's avatar Victor Frankenstein said, on June 18, 2011 at 2:52 am

Why is that how it “has to be”?
Why can’t the Giants simply admit financial defeat, keep the spots in the SP/BP filled with the currently effective roster and move on? After last year’s pointed omission from the postseason roster it shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone.
And as far as value for money spent – well, it’s spent whether Zito pitches or Vogelsong pitches or Mota pitches.
Why not get some wins instead of losses?

  62. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on June 17, 2011 at 9:49 pm

Going into tonight they’re 4th in runs on the road and 4th in HRs on the road. Offensively their home park is hurting them more than in the past. But, as I’ve patiently pointed out, they are #1 in pitching at home. There’s nothing to worry about. The bummer tonight is that Mota may have opened the door for Zitboy.

That was great effort from a future HOFer who has recently lost his mind. Yucko all the way around. Too many walks by Timmy, too few hits off a no-name pitcher, yet another bad play by one of the catchers, Pablo scared off by the pride of Manalapan, N.J., Mota putting it out of reach. I know it’s considered a road game, but even though they’re only 8 miles away and half the crowd is Giants fans, they just can’t seem to get anything going at that tomb of a ballpark.

    • Victor Frankenstein's avatar Victor Frankenstein said, on June 18, 2011 at 3:33 am

I live in the metro Phoenix area.
MLB – TV blacks out local team games’ video feeds until 90 minutes after they’re over.
I don’t pay $120/year to listen to the radio, so I wait for the archived game. That explains how I handle Giants/DiamondBlanks’ games.
Also, here in Hell it’s a tad warm in the day, so I do my conscious stuff at night.
That covers how I handle games with everyone else.

All this time I’ve had the archived game on pause. This is Bob Melvin’s fault.
(Remember the trivia question? And what Kuip said Melvin would say about the trade being what led the giants to the playoffs?)
I went to Baseball Reference and read play by play accounts of the ’87 NLCS between the Cardinals and Giants.
Then I looked at stats of a completely different player – the MVP of that series, who is still the only MVP to come from the losing side.

The paused archived game keeps coming back on while I screw around elsewhere on the ‘Nets.
For some strange reason I don’t want to watch games I know the Giants lose, so I block out the inning and final scores of archived games.
I also don’t go places where scores are posted.
Of course there are many ways of becoming historically informed. And until I showed up here and read commentary I didn’t know how that one was going to turn out.
This is, of course, entirely my bad. But honestly – thanks for saving me the wasted time.
If I’d made a similar move last night (actually yesterday morning) I could have saved a lot of time as well.
      Damned Blanks…toodles, Vic
