Hey Flappers— July 4th, my favorite day of the year, for many reasons. I hope you guys eat, drink and do whatever it is you do to celebrate this great day. Here’s hoping Timmy goes out there and pulls a “Righetti” today v the Padres……..

Gotta go, get breakfast and hit the park in time for BP. Anyone else on the club level today? I’ll buy you a beer.

I remember Fourth of July “back in the day”. Mom always made spareribs- and they were the best, any surly old pitmaster would be proud of them. It started the day before with a rub- she’s given me the recipe but I know she left something out…then there was the “mop sauce”,a potent concoction brushed on the ribs as they smoked away. Back then my brothers and I would finish a couple sides each..years later one of the best times I’ve ever had with my Mom was eating ribs straight out of the wood burning oven the night before one of my restaurants opened. We drank beer, danced , very good times…

Old age ( or, perhaps, sanity) struck like a lightning bolt about an hour ago. As Joey Chestnut began defense of his hot dog eating championship, I had to turn away from the TV until it was over..

that’s got to be Loo’s most hated contest ever.

Loo’s favorite contest? Who can look up the most girl’s skirts at a Mets game before getting slapped across the face.

Happy 4th everyone. I am the BB’q master in my family, ribs and chicken shish kabob, spelling? Go Giants. And for those of you who are in to beer, I am serving Blue Moon Belgian white, and Big Kahuna Fire Rock and Long Board. A hardy Cheers to all of you!!

Today’s purported lineup. Looks more like an indictment.

    Rowand CF
    Burriss 2B
    Sandoval 3B
    Huff 1B
    Ross LF
    Shierholtz RF
    Stewart C
    Crawford SS
    Lincecum P

Nobody in particular — just kvetching our offensive woes. Save for Torres and Tejada, it’s the same lineup that scored 0 for Timmy’s last outing whilst he held the Cubs to 1 through 7 innings.

Happy firth of the froth of the Fourth, Flappers.

Is Torres now on the bench for the foreseeable future?

BTW, just read fine piece on Sam Fuld, of the Rays, in the July 4 New Yorker. Good piece. Philips Exeter Academy kid. Then Stanford. Jewish-Catholic. From NH. (Does BW know him?) Diabetic. Crashes into walls like Pete Reiser. Had one of the best debuts ever at Fenway. He and his wife have one car; she drops him off at the ballpark; 19 mo baby. Get this, Twin: as an intern for STATS Inc. he tried to develop a rating on a batter’s foul balls, postulating that more foul balls late in the count mean you’re a better hitter. It’s not an original thought, but he set out to compile data to prove it. Then his handwritten notes got stolen with his luggage in Florida. Project incomplete. What’s not to like about Sam Fuld — except his current BA?

    Go, Timmy!

“Felicitous” instead of “Happy,” above, would’ve been more alliterative.

Happy 4th flappers. Just had some great steak and eggs in Summerland. Gonna walk across to the beach . G’s on the phone/radio at 1(?). Fireworks at 9. And of course some adult bevvies along the way. Loved the golf updates flav and sd. Enjoy the day flappers and remember the meaning. Like the g’s, America with all her warts is still the best game in town.

Timmy gave up 2 in the T1 while I was out BBQing? The least he could do on the Fourth of July to be patriotic is to get a goddamn haircut. I don’t have the exact numbers in front of me, but the Frairs have owned us as of late here in SF. Something like 9 of the last 11. “Ownage is ownage.”

My alliterative and even somewhat rationalistic preference would be “froth of the firth on the Fourth”. A bit derivative of a ca 1964 observation: “Once there was a man called God. Transposition makes him dog.” With Fuld in the fold what more can one hold?

Torres will be given his shot. Perhaps Bochy will cast the I Ching to ascertain the most propitious occasion.

Just had fresh picked strawberries with poundcake and whipped cream. Sirloin is marinating in a blend of apple juice, vodka, red wine and oregano. Do my grilling with wood. Topper will be some of my apple and plum branch trimmings. Straight shot would be apple with beef and plum with pork, but its close to 90 degrees here with high levels of humiliated relatives and goddamns buzzing around like crazy, just looking to alight long enough to chomp so that you feel it for half an hour afterwards. They love it when both of your hands are occupied. Sirloin gets foil grilled with perennial onion, green pepper and potato with maybe a few frozen cherry tomatoes along for the ride. Running low on them but some of this year’s plants are now in blossom.

Not that my misery-loves-company take really makes me feel any better about this game. Haven’t been watching it. My intuition is they are tired or listless, jet-lagged. But, hey, the game is not over. Stranger wins have happened.

Jesus H. Christ. Mota’s been giving up homers like they’ve been going outta style. Matters not. We’re avg. a downright pathetically embarrassing 2.8 runs/gm at home this year. There should be a rule like the SAT where you get so many pts just for writing down name. We should get 3 runs/gm for donning our goddamn uniforms…

Shit. OK, Torres just flat outs sucks. Last yr was a goddamn aberration, fluke, career year, call it what you wish. He’s been nothing more than a 4th/5th OFer his entire life and he’s “reverted back to form” in 2011. OK, here’s the scoop. Bochy’s has already received some shit for his selection of Beltran > McCutchen for the ASG. I think I know why he took Beltran. Because he’s gonna be coming over here via the trade before the deadline and Bochy wanted to extend the early olive branch. Give me Beltran. Give me anybody. We can’t hit worth a shit.

It’s a goddamn wonder how we have such a good record at home considering our negative run differential. We’re defying Pythagoras and his theory. You can only do that for so long. Things like that always even out eventually…

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on July 4, 2011 at 7:08 pm

Uh, wasn’t AZ going to be in first today? A Doomin’ Denny guarantee.

    • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on July 4, 2011 at 7:16 pm

“We’re defying Pythagoras and his theory.”
In baseball, it was invented by Bill James, and it’s defied regularly.

  27. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on July 4, 2011 at 7:06 pm

Torres came in late and a ball to the off field fence. He’ll be back..

  28. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on July 4, 2011 at 7:07 pm

I could see them trading for Beltran. Lurie obsesses about it, he really needs a new shtick. This is the end of his absurd deal. Hey, even with a leg and a half he’s better than any outfielder we have. I’d take him till he breaks down, hopefully he makes it till near the end of the year……….

  29. Flavor's avatar Flavor said, on July 4, 2011 at 7:12 pm

And I don’t make that big of a deal out of run differential. Everyone score in the neighborhood of 4 or 5 runs over the course of the season. Weird scores like 15-3 can skew it, especially if your team plays a lot of close games………..

  30. twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 said, on July 4, 2011 at 7:26 pm

They’re not playing their best ball and they’ve picked up 2 on both AZ and CO over the last ten. No one is going to threaten them in this division. Any deal that might be forthcoming will be with the postseason in mind.

2007 DBacks won the NLDS on a full season of negative run differential. ’87 Twins won that “World Series” thingie the same way. 1997 Giants were a division winner. etc… etc… Kinda thinkin’ “negative run differential” is just a longer way of saying “red herring”, with uh, more syllables ‘n stuff…

When u think about it, it should be worse. But it isn’t. Repeat, it isn’t. Which means it’s not really bad. It just SEEMS worse. They’re above .500, in first place, and the all star break coming up. They’ve arguably lost their top five bitters (torres hurt than off. Sanchez hurt, sandavol hurt ( doing good lately!), posey hurt, huff slumping). And yet. And yet they’re in first!

    Enjoy the fruits!

the later posts here tonight have been great. I hope your guys all had a chance to appreciate the day, find a moment to notice. I just read an article on Yahoo about a doctor who says that living to 150 years is no problem and that in the next 25 years we’ll be able to sustain life for a 1000 years. Uh huh. Interesting. Is he going to pay for my expenses from 65-1000? Crazy doctors are a dime a dozen……….

Just got back from the Capitol Mall and seeing the huge fireworks show over the Washington Monument with the Snarkettes and a bunch of close friends, along with about 300,000 other semi-close friends. Fantastic. With the Capitol building and Lincoln Memorial on opposite ends of the Mall, it makes you think — with all its faults, and some pretty tough history we’ve slugged through, we’ve still got a pretty damn good country. Night all…
